Hunter being from Shining Time makes interactions with Luz, Willow, and King all very interesting to say the least. Following some hc stuff I developed with pals when I watched TMR for the first time, Shining Time exists a bit more into the future than Sodor is. Around the time that TMR takes place (in my lore) it's the year 2000, and having TMR take place a little while before Hunter arrives means he would grow up in the 2000s with Patch and Lily (who would both be a good amount older than him as he'd be 6 when he first gets there and Patch and Lily would be abt 14-15 at that time since it'd have been around 2 or so years since TMR?) and be introduced to a lot more technology than Luz, Willow, and King would have. He's encouraged to try not to talk about the modernness of his hometown too much around his friends, after all Sodor's far in the past to him, he gets a bit of whiplash every time he visits them. Regardless though he loves it there and he loves living his life in Shining Time! It's a great little town with an interesting history that few know about.
#ttte#thomas and friends#thomas & friends#the owl house#toh#crossover#crossover au#my crossover#my au#On The Horizon (ttte x toh)#it just hit me that Patch and Lily would be ADULTS in the present day events of this au?????#part of me wants to say Burnett's still alive. He's pretty old but still around.#Lily would be Lady's driver in this au though because I have a hc that Lady chose her to be the next guardian after Burnett. Having thoughts about Valerie again.
But alas, her character development and depth in canon is.... well...
On a surface level Badass Ghost Hunter is a great character hook. Valerie is so cool! Her hunter character design is eye catching and attention grabbing. It's a great design. But beyond that, I want her character to have so much more depth. I want to know more about what kind of person makes the decisions she makes. Because honestly, she deserves it.
So I suppose we DIY this shit, huh?
Who's got some headcanons about Val's non ghost related hobbies and personal life?
The goofy stuff her dad's done since she was little that she pretends to be annoyed about but secretly loves? The things her dad does that she actually finds annoying? Her small joys? Her favorite snack? Her favorite season of the year and why? Her favorite movie or music genres? Her celebrity crushes? Her hopes and dreams for the future? Her best classes in school? Her dream job? What are your headcanons for her extended family? Does she have any aunties and uncles? Younger or older cousins? Her favorite animal? Her opinions on crocs? (The shoe or the reptile) Does she have any odd phobias? (like crocs) What motivates her to get out of bed every morning? What helps her fall asleep at night? What keeps her up at night? (Besides the ghosts) Does she prefer tea? Hot chocolate? Coffee? Cold drinks?
Tell me all the little details you've thought about. The fun ideas and sparks that can make her more.
#danny phantom#dp#Valerie Gray#if we can give Wes a whole ass personality we can give Valerie a hell of a lot more#and that's not to spite Wes. that's a DIY CHALLENGE#Valerie Gray Appreciation#i have. so many thoughts.

CLEARLY these two are my favorite of the ROR line up as I’ve only been able to create redesigns I truly love of them, every body is… kinda goofy looking ngl.
I know there designs are so different that it’s kinda crazy but I literally love them so much!
If you don’t know already Morgies the tall one with a red mullet and Hook is the buffer one with a beard.
I’ve explained my choices in design for Hook but that was literally my first post sooo…
Facial features are based off of the actors face normally. You can see that clearer in my Carlos design, but Hook has Colleys thicker eyebrows and Morgie has Lindell’s faint freckles. However if you look below you’ll see just… how completely changed they are:
The difference is so wild
But my designsfor both are based of of these two preexisting depictions of Morgana and Hook respectively.
Btw something about Live action Hooks is that they just… EAT SO FRICKIN BAD LIKE WTF. This has got to be some universal rule that a live action Hook variant must eat and be so so cool at ALL TIMES. ( for me it’s less about sexy and more about they look so cool)
( Anyway This is Morgana La Fey from Troll Hunters and Mr. Needs no introduction you know who that badass mf is)
More of my changes also come from character design things. Like the exaggerated lashes and visable water lines. I like to differentiate noses, eyes, eyebrows, and chins because I feel that’s something that really helps combat same face syndrome. It also helps when I make related characters, so they don’t look like carbon copies, I’ll trade some features in and out and swap them around. I give most characters baggy eyes, because I like the definition it gives them.
I also like to make color palettes similar and opposing, and add some traits that show small insights to the character. Hook and Morgie have warm color palettes for their clothes, however Hooks skin is warm, while Morgies is cold, a sign to his unnatural human form and his association with necromancy ( tho when he was just learning how to hold this form as a youngling he was much paler, now he has spent so much time with real mortal people he has learned to blend in with more realistic skin tones and knows how to flush his skin as if he has blood under it like them)
As a fun little thing tho they swap this theme with their eyes. Hooks eyes are cold and icy blue, while Morgies are chocolate. Of course even though his natural eyes are more like a yellow snakes eyes they are still warm yellow to Hooks cold blue. And they share the same taste in jewelry to opposite the other couple in their group. Hook and Morgie wear gold as their preferred choice of color for jewelry . Maleficent and Hades wear silver. Uliana wears wtv tf she wants, she doesn’t care. Also Hook and Morgie wear warm colors where as Hades and Mali wear cool colors. (Clothing is different from skin, so even tho Morgies flesh form isn’t natural and can never have the right look of skin fully he can still just wear normal clothes) Again Uli don’t care and wears what she wants to look as cool as she wants.
Here their ages are 19 and 20, with Morgie being older, and Hook is the shorter one during this time because, again, Morgies form is meant to be more unnatural due to his unorthodox creation, and even though my art is a little squished, Hook is the 2nd tallest of their group( making Morgie very abnormally tall) .
However there’s a 15 year gap where Morgie had been terrorizing his cousin Archie of Camelot and his chief warlock Marvin Merlinson and he forgets to age his human form. I’m giving him a cool gold armor set like Morgana from Troll hunters so that’s basically what he wears for like 15 years. So when he reunites with his old friends Hook has grown really tall and got a little grey, so before he gets out of his armor he has to change his form real quick so it doesn’t freak his friends out that he still looks like, mid 20s and theyre all late thirties pushing early forties. But he desires to stay shorter then Hook because that’s new and… intriguing.
Also Morgie is now also British like Hook!! (Arther is literally a BRITISH story! Why isn’t Morgie a CELTIC LAD) like I know the whole thing is that Brit’s suck with their plain ass beans with toast and black fucking pudding ( despicable shit 0/10 would not recommend) but King Arther and half sister are so cool, everyone was stupid for not knowing who Morgana Le Fay is 😤
Hook is from Oxfordshire and Morgie was “born” in Cornwall but raised in the kingdom of Avalon. (Don’t ask about why England exists in the same world as Auradon)
If you have any questions about these twos past life and relationship with each other feel free to ask me anytime!!

(Evan Mock) [THE MISCHEVIOUS]. Please welcome [GIANCARLO TOLENTINO (HE/HIM)] to Huntsville, WV. They are an [26]-year-old [RESIDENT] who lives in [TOWN]. You may see them around working as a [JANITOR AT THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL]. They are looking for [NADINE BRIGGS & LEIA TOLENTINO] their [HALF SISTER & COUSIN] Poor unfortunate soul. We’ll see if they survive.
Full Name: Giancarlo Tolentino Birthday: April 8 Age: 26 Hunter or Gatherer: Neither Sexuality: Bisexual Height: 5'9 Relationship Status: Single
Giancarlo didn't really have much of an opinion about the way his mom opted to live her life. He never really asked about the relationship she had with his father - whom he spent most of his time with - and while he was excited to have a little sister, it just wasn't something that struck him as odd. Maybe the whispers weren't about how cute he was, and it was more about how unusual it was that his mother seemed to love to date long term but never marry, commit to kids but not a wedding ring. He never really cared, though. Why should he? He was loved and cared for, by both his mom and his dad. Who cared about marriage?
A mischievous kid at heart, Giancarlo loved to pull pranks and mouth off at school, often winding up in detention. It wasn't that he was a bad kid - in fact, it was quite the opposite. He had a very large heart and loved helping people - including making them smile. Seeing his classmates light up at his shenanigans just encouraged him, and even when his antics bordered on mean or bullying, it was never intentional. He just leaned too hard into the bit.
No one liked the paradox; but Giancarlo figured the plus side was that now his family was forced to stay in one place - himself included. His father had talked many times about sending him to college, but that wasn't really anything Giancarlo wanted to do. He just wanted to hang out with his friends, skating around town and talking until it was imperative they get home. It wasn't that he didn't have any aspirations - he just loved the laid back life of being a kid too much to let it go.
Giancarlo is goofy, and never really lost that mischievous streak, but he wouldn't hesitate to give you the shirt off his back or his just purchased coffee if you're having a shitty day. Family is everything to him, and it's a big part of why he still lives with his dad (though part of it is also so his dad can keep an eye on him and make sure he's home safe before dark). Kind and compassionate, he'll still be the first person to jump to be in on a surprise party.

TIMING: The morning after [this] PARTIES: @declinlalune & @letsbenditlikebennett SUMMARY: Andy comes home to get a few things. Alex still has questions, but also bad ideas about how to fix things. CONTENT: Parental death (mentions), suicide ideation (implied at some points)
Andy wasn’t sure what Alex knew about what transpired with the ranger or not. She hoped she knew nothing, that way it would be her who’d break the news. Her sister had a right to know, and it ought to have come from the person who had committed the act, not from another source. She had no intention of sticking around the cabin, if only out of frustration and fear of running into Kaden. She was clean now, a night at Emilio’s and a scrubbing in his stubble-ridden shower (something she was familiar with, living with Kaden), so she hoped there wouldn’t be any shock to her sister’s system by her arrival. There might be some anger, though. She was fully prepared for that.
She found Alex on the couch, just where she’d left her. It was a reminder of why she did what she did, seeing her sister like that. Andy greeted her with a soft, but tired smile. There was no point in trying to practice neutrality, Alex would see right through it, especially after a night away with little to no explanation. “Hey.” She stood by the door as she unlaced her boots, moving them to the side. She shut the door behind her and hesitated before finding a seat on the arm of the couch. “Cass leave already?” She’d seen movies, had seen enough tik toks to know that new relationships fostered the inability to step away from one another, and besides, Alex was hurt. She could use the company.
—
Between Kaden coming home covered in blood and Andy not coming home at all, Alex knew what had happened. While she could make plenty of guesses about what exactly went down, she didn’t like any of them. Her cousin had promised he wouldn’t kill the hunter that hurt her, but she couldn’t help but remember the restrained anger that had lingered in Andy’s eyes when she had gotten home that night. She didn’t want to believe the hunter was dead, but the shame Kaden wore when he told her meant it had been the truth.
“Hey,” Alex greeted with a hint of uncertainty, “Yeah, she left a little bit ago.” The thought of her girl on her vigilante shit couldn’t even bring a goofy grin to her face when such an important question hung in the air. She couldn’t bother with any further small talk or greetings. “Where were you,” she asked, “Why didn’t you come home? Why was Kaden covered in blood? What happened?”
—
It was probably better that Cass wasn’t here for this. She would have asked the other to leave out of courtesy to her sister and the situation, but wouldn’t have been sure that she would have wanted to. The two seemed clingy enough already. It was probably better that Alex would have others after this, anyway. Andy wrung her hands together, not sure where to look. She needed to be honest with Alex, but wasn’t sure where to start.
And then the question came, bold and bright– a mixture of uncertainty and fear in her sister’s voice. Andy continued looking down at her hands as she answered. “He threatened us. A lot. Told us he wouldn’t stop.” She could still see the blood beneath her fingernails despite washing it away. Could still feel the way the knife sunk into his chest. Looking at Alex now, alive and partially well she knew she had made the right choice. “Alex, I did– I did it. Not Kaden. He tried… to stop me. I didn’t, I couldn’t. He threatened me, and you– my friends. I couldn’t.”
—
Even though she had known the truth, hearing it from Andy still hit her like a ton of bricks to the stomach. It felt like the wind had been stolen straight from her lungs as the words echoed in her mind. Alex hadn’t wanted to believe it. She’d tried so hard to grasp at any other truth, but the only one was that this hunter was dead by her sister’s hand. She’d always known she was her sister’s ruin. It was easy to lie to herself when she needed Andy so badly. Her sister had always been her lone safety raft in the choppy waters they’d been thrown into time after time and she clung on because it was all she knew how to do. She didn’t know how to do any of this without Andy. It wasn’t fair. She’d always known it wasn’t fair, but the fact glared her right in the face as her sister spoke.
Silence hung between them as Alex found her breath again. The ticking of the old clock on the wall seemed to be pounding as she tried to find something, anything, to say. A large part of her just wanted to jump off the couch and run into her sister’s arms like she’d done so many times before, but she couldn’t keep doing that. She couldn’t keep dragging her sister down until they were both monsters. It didn’t matter that she had no idea who she was without Andy, she couldn’t keep being the reason her sister didn’t get to lead the life she wanted.
“I don’t care,” she breathed out coldly. It wasn’t what she wanted to say. Even if she hated herself, Alex couldn’t fully deny the part of her that was grateful her sister thought she was worth protecting at all. It had always been a crutch that allowed her to trick herself into thinking she was anything but a monster to be put down. She couldn’t keep leaning on that crutch until her sister buckled under the weight. “You can’t just kill someone to protect me. That’s not okay,” she insisted, “You shouldn’t have to– I don’t want you to do that.”
Because it should have been her. She was already a monster, so why could Alex still not find the courage to fight for herself? Wasn’t that what predators did? How could the death of a man whose name she didn’t even know somehow cast a light on every thought she’d been avoiding for most of her life?
—
Andy waited for Alex to say something. Her sister’s expression reflected something that Andy couldn’t quite place, but she knew there was a horror beneath it, because as soon as Alex spoke, she felt her chest tighten. I don’t care. But shouldn’t she have? Alex could have died, and Alan, too. They both could have died. Leah, Nicole. The three of them in that cabin. They could of all died; everyone Andy cared about could have disappeared just like that because of one person. Why didn’t Alex care about that?
“You didn’t make me do anything, Alex.” Because that much was true. Though her anger and rage had been fueled by the thought of losing her sister, she’d done it on her own. Alex hadn’t placed the knife into her palm. Perhaps it’d been the love she held for her sisters and the others now close to her that had done so, but Andy had chosen to act with violence after certainty of no escape enclosed her.
“He told me he would send others. We tried to get him to go. He went after you, after my friends– he went after Emilio.” Andy had no doubt in her mind that he would have tried to kill all of them. Sure, they would never know if that would have been their reality, but Andy couldn’t shake the thought– couldn’t reflect on something she’d never know. “We gave him a chance and he chose to fight us on it. He chose to become violent. I killed him because I had to.”
—
Maybe Alex hadn’t literally forced her sister’s hand, but it was a position Andy never would have been in if it wasn’t for her. How could her sister not see it? Was she not haunted by the same broken record of their parents’ voices that Alex was? No matter how hard she tried, their whispers always crept up on her and it seemed like just another way she was the weak one of the two of them. Even with the mention of others that the hunter would have gone after, it still boiled down to her. If she’d just even been normal, Andy and her could have settled somewhere without any trace of the supernatural, but she wasn’t normal and hadn’t been for a long time.
“There had to be another way,” she argued, partially because it was true and partially because she’d already decided on what she had to do. If someone was going to protect her at all, it couldn’t be Andy or Kaden. She couldn’t let the rangers be forced into another situation where they had to fight their own. Alex loved them too much for that. So even if her words stung her, she continued. “No one should be dead.”
It didn’t matter that this hunter was determined, it shouldn’t have fallen to Andy. Everything always fell to Andy and at some point, Alex knew she couldn’t keep remaining complacent, but she hadn’t expected that moment to come so soon. Even as she fought and tried to reset their course, all she wanted was to wrap her arms around her sister and never let go.
“We’re not going to agree on this.” Her voice was hard with only a slight tremble at the end that betrayed her. Alex wasn’t sure how much more she could push when all she wanted was to sink into Andy and cry. But she couldn’t. Her sister couldn’t simply be a blade to someone else, even if the someone was her and Andy believed she was worth it for now. They’d fought and ran from too much for her sister to be forced back into the same role, even if Alex told herself she wanted that role to some degree. Or wanted it. She didn’t know.
“Please, just…” She trailed off. She wasn’t sure what to say. Alex knew she should be the one to leave, but she wasn’t exactly in the most mobile of spots given her injuries and the full moon was around the corner. “I can’t do this right now.”
—
“There wasn’t another way.” Andy’s voice shook as she spoke. Frustration coiled in her like a spring, fingers trembling as she fought to keep her composure. She wasn’t sure why Alex couldn’t see that. She hadn’t been there, but she had run into the ranger. Had seen the way he went after both herself and Alan. Neither of them deserved to have gotten hurt, so why was Alex punishing her for the choice she made? She wanted to shake her sister, to plead with her to see the reality of their situation. If the roles had been reversed, Andy knew Alex would have done the same, or at least similar.
Andy shook her head. “We don’t have to agree. I just need you to know that I did it because I knew it was the only way.” The Durand sisters had spent so long running that while Andy had entertained it for a moment, she knew it was something they couldn’t do, not again. They’d fought too much for their place in Wicked’s Rest. Alex had friends. Hell, even she had friends! Ones that she was letting in, letting see the parts of her she was too angry at to address. “I wouldn’t have done it if I thought there was another way. I went there hoping for another way, Alex.” Her voice steeled, the trembling gone now– far beyond the frustration that’d caused it in the first place. There was fear, now. Fear that she lost her sister to the violence she caused.
She stared down at her sister from where she sat on the arm of the couch. The version of Alex she saw now was far removed from the one she remembered before she’d been shot. There was trauma there, and Andy knew that. If she didn’t look the way she did, or didn’t hold the literal genes of her mother and father, then maybe they could have gone unnoticed, but it was always their parents getting in the way. Even now, after she’d disconnected herself from them, they were tearing the youngest down. “Stop. Alex, please.” Andy made a move to reach out to Alex. “Don’t– don’t pull away from me, please.”
—
Deep down somewhere buried under every single thing their parents had tried to teach them, Alex knew her sister was right. Any inkling of that truth was tucked away too deeply to make it to the surface. All she could think was that couldn’t be the only way. There had to have been a possible outcome where she didn’t turn her sister into a murderer. She had just fallen short yet again and her sister had to pick up the pieces like she always did. How was that fair?
“Ok,” she said evenly. It wasn’t so much an agreement as much as Alex didn’t really have an argument. At least, she didn’t have an argument that wouldn’t fall apart the moment she met her sister’s gaze. Even as she was trying to put space between them, everything in her was practically screaming to reach out to Andy, but she couldn’t let herself. One hunter dead by her sister’s hand was already too many. She couldn’t put her in that position over and over again for the rest of their lives, not when on some level Andy was a hunter. She always had what Alex didn’t.
“I can’t,” Alex practically whispered. If she spoke any louder, she knew her voice would crack. It took everything in her to hold onto her resolve when all she wanted to do was fling herself at Andy when she saw her move to reach out. Instead, she recoiled and it stung even her. Every part of the movement felt unnatural and she wasn’t sure which she was more desperate for— Andy to leave so she no longer had to fight that urge or to just give in entirely. “I need to,” she breathed, “I’m sorry.”
And she was sorry. Right now, Alex knew this hurt both of them, but her sister would be better off without being forced to constantly compromise who she was for the werewolf sister she’d chosen to protect above all else. She looked down at her hands in her lap that gripped to the blanket to keep from shaking. She knew if she met Andy’s eyes, her resolve would crumble, so they remained trained on the whites of her knuckles.
—
Andy tried her hardest to not blame Alex for the way she was reacting. Because though she knew she would understand the choice she would have made in protecting them, there would be shock, too. After everything they’d gone through, Andy couldn’t bring herself to settle into the reality that maybe this was the last straw. That she’d gone too far. Andy felt the anger pull at her, thread for thread– felt it wind its way around her like some vicious thing she could not see. The anger was not at Alex, but at herself for thinking that her sister would be on her side in this. They’d been together through it all and Andy had always been on Alex’s side, but this was there it ended? It wasn’t fair.
She felt like a child, which considering she’d never been allowed to be such a thing, was rich for her to even think. Andy felt her lips go numb as her chest tightened. She didn’t know what to do with herself. Stay here and beg, or leave like Alex wanted her to? Maybe space would do them so good, maybe Alex would come around. What if Kaden turned Alex against her? Would he do that? What conversation had they had that painted her as bloodthirsty? Her mind raced with fictitious details of a conversation that probably never happened. It came to a stuttering stop as she pulled herself together. She couldn’t do this, not here. Not in front of her sister.
“Fine.” Andy slid off of the arm of the couch. “You got it, Alex. I’ll leave.” Her voice was soft as she spoke, and there was no malice, none of the anger she felt in the deepest parts of herself dared venture through to her tone or words. “I’ll go.” Because if that’s what Alex wanted, then that’s what she had to do. She knew she couldn’t face Kaden, not after this conversation. She still remembered the look in his eye, how it haunted her more than the lifeless body. Andy turned her back on Alex for the first time in her life, gathering some of her things, and then making her silent exit through the front door.

Anya’s characters as Food Wars!
Al — Yūya Tomita
Tomita owns a Bento Shop in the Shopping District and is the chairman of it. He is VERY enthusiastic and also an awkward mess. I almost had Al as the leader of the RIce Bowl Society on campus, BUT then this guy showed up and how could I not make him the leader of a Small Business Coalition? (Also it was said in canon that Tomita and the Rice Bowl Society leader had very similar personalities).
Alana — Alice Nakiri
Alice’s whole speciality is molecular gastronomy… so she uses a LOT of chemistry! Also she is kinda high strung and dramatic and a lot of her story is about being in the shadow of her cousin, which I think tracks a lot with Lana.
Dipper - Zenji Marui
Zenji’s whole thing is the History of Food. He’s kinda spineless and easily bullied, but he is very knowledgeable and LOVES to research things.
Ting - Hisako Arato
Hisako’s speciality is MEDICINAL CHINESE FOOD, okay. I almost had Ting as Megumi, the love of my life, but Megumi seemed a little… too unsure. Hisako, though, had the perfect specialty for Ting and the perfect responsible personality.
Jane — Miyoko Hōjō
Almost had her as Nikumi, who’s specialty is MEAT, but then I met Miyoko… Miyoko is the heiress to Tokyo’s fanciest Chinese restaurant and she is determined to make her way in the cutthroat world of cooking by being RUTHLESS to men… but then finds herself impressed by Megumi
Phil — UNDECIDED; WILL UPDATE
Holley — Erina Nakiri
She loves rules. She loves convention. She gets flustered when things don’t go her way. She turns her nose up at people who ruffle her feathers. She has a godlike palette.
Vanessa — Nao Sadatsuka
Her specialty is concocting witch-like brews for her stews and soups. Also definitely hella gay, if a bit problematic about it.
Howl — Satoshi Isshiki
He seems carefree and goofy (and is like…always almost naked), but he’s really one of the most skilled chefs at the school. Just hides that under his constant nudity
Gil — Akira Hayama
He is Very Serious. He is an orphan. He owes everything to the organization that saved him (in this case One Woman).
Alice — UNDECIDED; WILL UPDATE
Pepa — UNDECIDED; WILL UPDATE
Hunter — Takumi Aldini
My poor little meow meow…. My pathetic boy… listen, all you need to know about Takumi is that he declared a rivalry against the main character (who is like… not really invested in this rivalry) and after their first battle he was like TILL WE MEET AGAIN!! And dramatically left the room… then it turns out they were sitting next to each other on the bus and Takumi was SOOOO embarrassed. I love him.

Animal Crossing Fish - Explained #200
Brought to you by a marine biologist and...holy hell, 200?!!
CLICK HERE FOR THE AC FISH EXPLAINED MASTERPOST!
Well, I’d like to commemorate this momentous occasion by covering a really interesting creature that was featured in AC Pocket Camp and that is the Opah. I’m a little biased here because I just love weird fish, especially deep sea species we don’t really know a lot about. It’s about the mystery. So, I’ll do my best to cover this amazing thing. If you want to know why we don’t have a lot of information into deep sea fish, check out my coverage of ACNH’s museum tour of the deep sea tank.
The Opah appeared in AC Pocket Camp for Fishing Tourney 40, which occurred in July 2021. Like I mentioned in the last entry, it appears that ACPC is less concerned with the actual temperature range or habitat of the fish it chooses for what events. The Opah is considered a deep-sea species, or at least an open ocean species that just doesn’t come close to land. It often lives at depths where the water temperature is around 4º C (about 39º F), which is, ya know, not a balmy summer temperature. Although Opahs as a group have a cosmopolitan distribution (aka they are found all around the world, including tropical areas) they tend to stay deep where the water is cool and sunlight can’t reach.
Anyway, the Opah is a pretty unique fish. It belongs to the Order Lampriformes, a small group of fish that include mostly deep-sea and pelagic species. The Order’s name comes from the Opah’s round shape and brilliantly-colored fins and skin, though most Lamprids are more long and slender, with most fish in the Order belonging to the “ribbonfish” clade, for which the infamous Oarfish is a part. That being said, Opahs exist apart from their cousins in the Lampridae family, which only houses one Genus, Lampris. For much of the time we’ve known that Opahs existed, we accepted that there were two species within this Genus. However, in recent years, Lampris guttatus, the comsopolitan species, has been broken up so that there are now six species with more limited ranges. As I’m sure AC Pocket Camp wouldn’t recognize this, not to mention the study occurred in 2018 after ACPC was released, I’m pretty confident this is simply Lampris guttatus, or the (original) Opah.
Ralph Pace (NOAA Fisheries), Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons
So, despite the fact they look a bit goofy and fat, these fish are actually really fast and exhibit endothermy, or warm-bloodedness. In fact, the Opah is the only fish we’ve discovered so far that has whole-body endothermy, in which all of its internal organs and muscles are kept at temperatures higher than the surrounding water. (Please note, this is still unlike birds and mammals that keep their warmth at a constant temperature - the Opah’s body temp still fluctuates.) On top of that, Opah also exhibit regional endothermy, or the act of keeping some parts of the body warmer than others. This type of endothermy is more akin to billfish, tuna, and lamnid sharks (like the great white, porbeagle, salmon, and makos). This type of endothermy usually keeps the eyes, brain, and swimming muscles at an elevated temperature which helps these fish remain active hunters in colder waters. So, unlike most deep-sea fish, the Opah doesn’t just float around in the dark waiting for prey to come to it - it has the power and energy to seek out and chase down its food, which often includes squid and smaller fish.
And there you have it. Fascinating stuff, no?

Hi, I was curious if you could ship me with one of the bad batchers? If you don’t want to, that’s okay :)) So I’m five foot tall, I weigh 110, I’m 18 years old, INFJ, October libra. I have light skin, brown eyes, long eyelashes, and thick mid length dark brown hair. I like to draw, write, read, be with friends and family in my free time, or just to be by myself sometimes. I love and thrive on coffee, as well as tea and music. Also Im obsessed with mushrooms, I currently have a fairy garden aesthetic. I like taking care of my plants and spending time in my room, or decorating it lol. Though when Im busy, I’m working at my job and doing school. I’d say Im pretty responsible for my age- I buy my own things, I hate relying on others for money, I like buying people stuff because I like giving. I make sure I get my work done asap with good amount of effort, I hate being lazy when I can be a goofball. Besides that, I’m a goofball. I try my best to make other people smile and laugh cuz it makes my day, and I try to be helpful to others when they’re stressed. Whenever my friends are upset, I will try to talk them through with whatever is going on, and do my best to ease their mind. I like to challenge those in authority, especially ones I don’t like. For instance, my assistant principal wrongfully took my phone away. I was using it for school, and he knew that. I glared at him for the entire day whenever I saw him. I wanted him to know that I didn’t like him, or respect them. And I’ll do that to anyone I don’t like. I try to act tough, but sometimes I really push myself too much. I have a lot of anxiety that I’m not doing enough, that whenever I’m taking a break, I convince myself Im lazy. I always feel like a nuance to my friends even though they’ve told me constantly I’m not. I’ve also dealt with the lost of my closest cousin, which was very hard on me, but I try to keep going for her. But generally, I’m a happy person, and I just try to get through the day. I’m working on loving myself more, and I’m slowly getting better at it.
Hello lovely! I ship you with...
Hunter!
I would have to say that the two of you first really connected after a mission and he needed to get away from all the action for a little bit, so he stayed the night at your place. You showed him your mushrooms, which he really enjoyed learning about! He asked you to tell him all about them; he really just wanted to hear more of your voice. To him, it was like running water, or a cool breeze. Listening to you talk helped calm him down, relax, and let his guard down. We all know Hunter is a pretty serious dude overall, right? I think that when he got to spend time with you, he would see your goofy nature and eventually let himself act silly as well. With you, he doesn't need to be a sergeant in the grand army of the republic, not a genetically enhanced soldier bred for batter; with you, he could figure out what it really meant to be "Hunter." He didn't necessarily have time to figure himself out before, but he does with you, and he loves you for it. Being a member of the bad batch, he also has a lot of respect for how you deal with authority you don't like. You're not like Wrecker, charging headfirst into the situation without a plan, but you still make your true feelings known. Overall, there's just a lot of mutual respect between you, and you both end up growing throughout the process.

Dark Deity Pre-Release Character Opinions
This isn't actually a tier list, but someone helpfully created a template for this game and it's as good a way as any to do a little visual showcase for this cast. Characters are listed by their class sets, which are fixed but offer a nice variety in terms of promotion options. My opinions on each are as follows, from left to right in each row. Most characters have introductory profiles written up on the DD subreddit, if you'd like to check them out yourself.
Warriors
Alexa
You know those buff female blacksmiths in Echoes and Three Houses that some people wish were playable characters? That's pretty much Alexa. Can't say I'm too hyped about her myself, but warrior + tomboyish female character will do that for me...or not do it, I suppose.
Benji
Seems to have been written to become a meme, and I still can't decide whether that's clever or stupid. Kind of like Raphael only with a bigger emphasis on training than on eating, and with brotherly devotion replaced with brotherly angst that might theoretically go somewhere if the character isn't reduced to being a goofy joke all the time.
Fenton
Doesn't have a character profile, so as far as I know he's just a generic dwarf because DD swaps out its inspiration's loli dragons and other vaguely fetishistic shapeshifters for the two most cliché non-human races in Western fantasy. I wonder whether his VA will voice him with a Scottish accent, to go all in on the (ironic?) laziness. There are a handful of elves in the playable cast, but Fenton is the only dwarf so for better or worse he's representing.
Helena
She's the embodiment of the FE exotic swordswoman archetype, but curiously DD seems to have turned that broad ethnic brush inward. Helena's last name is apparently a Japanese verb, her art shows her with a spear (as in the association of the naginata with women), and she studied and trained in a monastery that seems to blend elements of Buddhism and Shintoism. Not sure how all that fits into the larger setting yet, but at this point she's still got more background development than Petra.
Irving
Our Hero, the one front and center on the cover art. He sounds a bit on the blander side as far as lords or lord equivalents go, with his most promising hook for me being his established friendship with Garrick (see the ranger section). At best I can hope for a bit of a romantic friendship dynamic, although they sound a bit rougher overall as they're military academy schoolmates I wonder why DD went with that instead of lordlings of different territories.
Rogues
Brooke
Looks like Camilla; has a backstory like Niles. Cleavage aside though the sexual element of both is toned down here, and there might be some sapphic bodyguard shenanigans to be had as her current employers are a pair of highborn sisters further down this list.
Cia
For some reason she reminds me of Tressa from Octopath Traveler, only bustier and a bartender rather than a merchant. She's still just a small town girl with big city dreams, and this being a tactical war game following those dreams will inevitably involve stabbing people.
Corvan
Hard to judge him at the moment, as his profile was only the second written and so isn't terribly detailed. He's a moon elf with scholarly interests, apparently. Still, as of right now he's the only rogue who doesn't slot loosely into either a ninja/assassin or pirate aesthetic, so that's kind of neat. Also, he's one of several characters to have FEH-esque beach fanart made of them already, so clearly someone's into elf twinks.
Ford
A former officer at the military academy Irving attends and a smuggler who dotes on his niece, Ford has major dad energy. Per developer reveals he's also bi, and as I mentioned before I'm totally fine with that. More bear sex, please - but what guy in this cast would hop in the sack with Ford? Only time will tell. His personal skill makes him extra dodgy, which combined with the mug of booze in his art makes me think of WoW brewmasters who dodge-tank through the power of being wasted.
Wren
Like Brooke, he's an assassin from a foreign nation - in his case the same one as Helena so presumably he's a not!Japanese ninja. I'm not really feeling him at the moment. What is it about Hao'Fen (the city/territory he and Helena come from) and massive families? That comes up in both their backstories.
Rangers
Caius
I feel like this is the third or fourth character to grow up in some slum or other; at least they've all been in different towns so far. The relative rarity of noble characters is certainly different from FE, but it reduces the political stakes which leaves me wondering a bit about the story. Anyway, Caius is a small town desert hunter who learned how to make arrows out of animal bones. How aerodynamic is bone, I wonder?
Garrick
Irving's BFF and seemingly the Hector to Irving's Eliwood, only with more flirting (his intro doesn't specify that Garrick is flirting with women, but I'm not going so far as to say that indicates anything). He's the academy headmaster's son, with a strained relationship with his father for some of that hotheaded lead tension. Notably, his VA is the one I'm most familiar with in this cast, as he's the voice of Revali from Breath of the Wild as well as love interests in two different erotic gay dating sims I've played. In other words, I know what this guy sounds like making awkwardly simulated sex noises...and I have no idea what to do with that information.
Maeve
She's a half-elf with a very storied background, so much so that it's all rather hard to follow her exploits when little of what's being described has been fully revealed yet. I'm expecting her to be a mid/lategame recruit, unless she's dropped in early on to reveal that (sun) elves exist or something.
Rose
Imagine if Bernadetta were a commoner, although we can only hope they'll be less screaming. Alternatively, Neimi without an obvious boyfriend. She won the beach contest so now she has official swimsuit art, which I guess makes her a top-tier waifu in the eyes of players who care about such things.
Sophia
A ranger in the "has animal companions" sense, although whether that will come into play mechanically aside from her personal skill - Butter the ferret can attack with her! - remains to be seen. Her preference for the company of animals is explained by a lack of social graces, so prepare for klutz-related humor. Of note to those interested in F/F is that her introduction specifically brings up her connection with Sloane (see the mage section) and how close the two of them are.
Clerics
Faust
Doesn't have a profile yet, so not much to go off other than his decidedly unhinged look. The cleric class set does feature some darker-flavored options, so presumably he's more naturally aligned with those. His VA was announced to be the YouTuber behind So This is Basically Fire Emblem and other similar videos, so I'm picturing a kooky and somewhat demented Henry type.
Lincoln
Also lacks a profile at time of writing...clerics get so little love. The Discord has identified him a bland blond paladin sort, but as we know from the likes of Perceval and especially Dimitri that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be boring (or not gay).
Maren
The soft-spoken healer type, and also a childhood friend of Garrick although her intro sibling-zones him but then this game is inspired by FE so who knows if that'll stick. She may have some interesting thoughts on the theology of the setting, as there seem to be several faiths and she's said to have a complicated relationship with her own. I will be utterly shocked if she's not either Irving or Garrick's eventual love interest.
Samara
One of two princesses of the country of Aramor, which appears to be loosely inspired by the Middle East. Heaven help us if the Khalidstans ever get wind of this game. Unfortunately aside from her bond with her older sister (in the mage section) and the knowledge that Brooke has been hired as their bodyguard there's not much to Samara at the moment. Hopefully the clerics all do some comparative theology in their bond conversations, and this isn't like Sacred Stones where none of the clergy characters from different countries ever compare notes. The succession crisis involving Samara and her sister vs. their less-loved cousin the king's son might be a major plot hook? It's still too early to tell.
Vesta
Much like Maeve her backstory has entirely too much going on to really follow at the moment. Basically she's a human who grew up in a sun elf city because Reasons (seriously, I don't know what they are) and was called to a clerical vocation and also something about taking a journey. Has an unfortunate case of silly boob armor, which unlike a certain other character probably won't be rectified this close to release.
Mages
Alden
Maren's precocious younger brother, also basically Ricken up to and including the comically oversized hat. As a unit he follows the tradition of Donnel, Mozu, and Cyril of having a personal skill that buffs his stat gains, so it's safe to say he's a growth unit. At least he'll probably join early.
Liberty
Comes with dead brother angst and a connection to the "aspects" system that will hopefully make more sense once I've played the game and know how it functions both mechanically and from a storytelling perspective. Otherwise she looks to be a busty older - as in, not a teenage - mage in the vein of Calill.
Monroe
Got the first ever character profile, so it's really short. He's the son of a duke and sounds like a bit of a snob, albeit one that can make explosions happen to back up his haughtiness. He's got some scarring around his eye that surely must come with a story. Someone also made featured fanart of him in Heroes summer banner style, so I guess he's got somebody horny already.
Sara
Samara's half-sister, with comparable fantasy Middle Eastern flavoring. Has an interest in discovering magical artifacts and being a just ruler in the event she winds up on the throne (so, almost definitely), and she and Samara travel around with the assassin Brooke as their bodyguard. There's maybe some lesbian possibilities there? Either way, Sara has enough development where I could see her as a major supporting character.
Sloane
Comes with a genuinely fascinating backstory involving manipulative double-crossing parents, an education in the cruelties and deceptions of social life (reflected in her personal skill), and disinheritance - and yet it's all likely to be overshadowed because she may go down as DD's equivalent to Fates's face-touching. Her initial art is even more revealing than Camilla's, and while the developers later gave her a more modest redesign after negative feedback I get the feeling that this controversy may live on. Her introduction mentions her hunting for both heirs and heiresses and she's now been linked to Sophia, so safe to say she's another confirmed bi character.
Adepts
While the other class sets are standard fantasy fare adepts require a bit more explanation. They have innate magical abilities and appear to be feared and distrusted most places in the setting. Functionally they remind me of adepts from the Golden Sun series, if anyone is familiar with those games. The classes in the adept group tend more toward physical/magical hybridization than those of other sets, so that will probably be their mechanical niche. Oh, and their default weapon type is lances, which is a plus in my book.
Aurima
Along with Caius and the royal sisters, he's another one from the desert nation of Aramor. An arena fighter who got touched by a god in what I assume was a non-sexual way and came out of it with a new appearance and adept powers. Also, he's confirmed to be over 40 - how often do you see that in games like this?
Bianca
Looks like a more carefree Mathilda from Echoes. She's a ranking officer in the Delian army which sounds like it'd sit uneasily with her adept powers. Her profile describes Lincoln as her close friend, which is still about the most we know about him at this point.
Elias
This guy's writing plays more into the fairly standard coding that comes with adept powers, as we know they manifested shortly before he was going to confess his feelings to a male paramour and afterwards he was forced to flee his homeland and wander the world. He also spent time among dwarves, so insert short bear jokes here? In the present he's attached to Cia in what seems to be a platonic way; maybe she's a fruit fly, or maybe she just likes having a friend who can light drunken assholes on fire? Elias is definitely into guys, but I would still be a little surprised if he turned out to be totally gay as that's such a rarity in these sorts of things.
Iris
Oof, another lengthy and rough backstory. Iris had better parents than Sloane, but she also had to deal with permanent facial scarring (hence the mask) after a bandit kidnapping and the stigma of manifesting as an adept pretty much eliminating the prospects of her making a good political marriage. Also, she and Elias both come from Neullais, which is prominently featured on the continental map on the DD subreddit but doesn't seem to come up all too often in backstories. I think it's a not!France? Hard to tell.
Thae'lanel
A World of Warcraft blood elf, flowing anime hair and apostrophe'd name and all. I like WoW so that's not terribly grating, but as he has no profile yet there's little else I can say. Thae'lanel is mentioned in Maeve's introduction as a member of a sun elf group called the Exiled, which I'm guessing is tied to his adept status in some way. He and Maeve form yet another adventurer/bodyguard duo.

Alright, cool. I finally have a guaranteed length of time that should be long enough to go through all of these, so let’s do this. I know the plan was to have me address each ask one at a time but that didn’t work out lol so I’m just doing it all at once. I’m also turning it into a post so anyone who wants to can follow along with my journey.
I’m also gonna copy/paste the text of the other asks instead of screen capping them because copy/pasting is faster lol.
I’m gonna put a pic of each one here, give my thoughts, maybe a goofy rating (I dunno), and then pick my favorite. Just so y’all know.
* Tanawy's entry n.1 in the Dragon Quest monster showcase: the all-time classic Slime. When asked to design the Slime like the standard goop monster they usually were, Toriyama said "no" and a legend was born, now cute slimes are more popular than the disgusting goop depiction. Its cousins and variants are numerous and some are very different from one another so as a bonus here the criminally underutilized Mottle Slime and its evolution the Mottle King Slime.
See, I don’t even need to look this one up. Here it is:
But let’s be real, you guys didn’t need to see an image of this dude either. I love this thing. I never went through a period where I thought of the grosser oldschool slimes. This thing has always been what’s come to my mind when I here the word in an RPG context. Which, considering my zero experience with DQ, really speaks to this thing’s popularity. I am actually going to remove this one from consideration, though, for that reason. I just have too much of a bias towards it. I know it too well, and all variations seem to be equally great. It’s a 10/10, though. Truly iconic.
Get the rest after the cut!
* Tanawy's entry n.2: Originally a boss monster, here is the Golem. While not the sharpest tool in the shed, these brick-made guys can be quite loyal, with a child-like personality, downright adorable (I will never forget you Goldirox) but their strenght in battle must not be underestimated. And since St. Valentinus is around the corner here a Chocolate Golem variant as a gift. Friendship chocolate mind you, from a dude to another 😄
I like this guy. He reminds me of a couple oldschool Yugioh cards. They’re all bad cards, but I’m nostalgic for them so that help’s this guy’s chances. I don’t know that I buy him as a threatening boss, though. He seems more like he’d be your big stone pal.
The chocolate variant is absolutely adorable.
8.5/10 overall for both.
* Tanawy's entry n.3: Here are two members of the Machine Family, first the Killing Machine. These relentless hunters are merciless and they are constantly upgrading, so models with different modifications are plenty. They even come with garden sprinkles. Then there is the Mecha-mynah, who puts a different spin on the mechanical Cuckoo-bird motif. Careful these guys have razor-sharp wings and they selfdestruct when cornered.
Alright, not so much for the second one, but the Killing Machine also reminds me of, like, a half dozen Yugioh monsters. Did Kazuki Takahashi just like ripping this franchise off or something? Either way, these are both good designs, but they don’t really work for me that much. They’re a little...plain? I guess? I guess I like my machine creatures rougher and with more detail. 7/10.
* Tanawy's entry n.4: Next are my deepest fears (exaggeration) if they were real; the Waspion, half wasp half scorpion, and the Claw Hammer, Half hammerhead shark half metal scolopendra, all nightmare. Continuing with the caravan of creepiness, here is the Bona Constrictor, just get it away from me. This next one, when i saw it for the first time i yelled "WTF is That?!" here is the Ulcer, a walking awful pile of rotting flesh.
I am NOT a fan of the Ulcer. That thing’s ugly, and not even in a fun way. 0/10.
I like these other guys, though:
The Waspion is literally just Gligar from Pokemon, but aside from that I like animal/creature mash-ups. And the Claw Hammer is a pretty unique one. 9/10 for the whole lot.
* Tanawy's entry n.5: Beef or chicken? Why choose when you can have both? Here is a heavyweight of the Bird Family the taurine Bullfinch. But dont forget your vegetables, or else they might turn into these Plant family monsters, the eggplant Woebergine, the bellpeppers Capsichum and the cucumber Cruelcumber. Also, meet the Peahooter, these guys pelts their targets with arrows taking advantage of their higher ground.
Okay, we’ve got another mash-up creature here in the form of the Bullfinch, but I’m not feeling this one as much. It’s worth, like, a 6.5/10, maybe. The Woebergine and the Peahooter are both pretty interesting. The Peahooter is kinda cute in a weird way and the Woebergine is delightfully derpy. They both deserve approaching an 8/10. I’m not really feeling the Capsichum at all though. They get a 5 or a 6/10.
* Tanawy's entry n.6: Who doesn't like a good dog? Well maybe not these guys from the Beast family: the Chainine who will ensnare their preys with their collars, the Putrefido, who is no longer alive, the Abracadabrador, who will eat your bones, the Crocodog, a levitating (yes this thing floats in the air) dog-crocodile hybrid and finally the Jackal Ripper (long lost relative of Wolverine or just imitator? More at 11 on the news)
Hey now. That’s not really fair to the other entries. Every one of these dudes:
Is a very GOOD BOI. I think I like the Abracadabrador the least. He’s a little too un-dog-like compared to the others. 6.5/10. The Chainine and the Putrfido are both the perfect blend of cute and weird. I like them a lot. They get 7.5/10. Jackal Ripper is a badass 8/10. He’d be cooler if he was wearing jeans. I LOVE the Crocodog, though. 10/10. Perfect. He just looks like a friend, but he also looks like he could kill my enemies. Which is what I like in a monster.
* Tanawy's entry n.7: Here is a taste of Japan with the Boppin’ badger, the most Tanuki-like monster you will ever meet; Then these guys don't need consent to give everyone within their reach a smooch, here is the Lips. Also, beware of these horses of the underworld, the Equinox where they probably hangout with these other lovely fellows, the Hellspawn. Speaking of which here is the demon Teeny Sanguini. Cute eh? Not when it evolves in the Bloody Manguini. Thankfully not everyone of them does that.
Okay, you can’t fool me. That first one is just a regular animal.
Jokes aside, though, I’m not really feeling this bunch unfortunately. The Hellspawn just reminds me too much of mutant can Steven, the Lips is a little boring, and the Equinox, while I like the wordplay in its name, and while it’s cool in principal, is too busy. I’m just not feeling the designs of these guys overall. 4 or 5/10 for the whole lot. Though the Teeny Sanguini is closer to a 5 than a 4.
* Tanawy's entry n.8: There are two species of monsters, the Pips and their cousins the Conks, who constatly imitate the classic classes of the humans, like warriors or priests, but this time the little rascals have gone a little farther and here they are copying the DQ8 4 main heroes in the Trodainian Conklave, the DQ4 heroes in the Zenithian Conklave, the hero of DQ1 and the 3 heroes of DQ2 in the Alefgardian Conklave and the hero of DQ3 with 3 other companions in the Aliahanian Conklave. Cute.
Okay, I love the idea of these things. They’re cute, they fit right in with the general aesthetic of the franchise, and they have a ton of personality. I’m not gonna post pics of all of them because there’re so many, but they deserve ~9/10 collectively. They’re very good.
* Tanawy's entry n.9: Not enough dragons? So here's three: what do you get mixing a T-rex, a dragon and a vicious axeman? An Hacksaurus that's what! Then the Drakulard. Don't be fooled by their mole these portly fellows mean business. Another chubby dragon, the Jargon: dragonic masters of the clay containers, these guys URNed their right to use jar puns and they will make sure you remenber it, even if they have to crack your pot.
Okay now these are more what I was thinking when I heard the title Dragon Quest.
I like the Hacksaurus the best outta them. He just looks nice. They’re all good, though. They fit the art style perfectly, and resemble each other just enough that you buy them all being related creatures. 8/10 overall, though the Hacksaurus is a little above the others, with the Jargon being a barely at the bottom of the barrel. Or the jar I guess.
* Tanawy's entry n.10: The only story entry in this showcase, because just look at him, it's the only DQ big baddie (at least in english) to actually call themselves "the Demon Lord" It's Orgodemir, specifically it's true form which is the first photo you find in the gallery at almost end-page. Let me just tell you this, Orgodemir is a d*ck of the highest level. The brain it's actually an eyelid for a giant eye by the way. Happy Nightmares.
HAHAHAHA. I know there are other forms for this guy, and this is probably not the reaction that anyone who played the game would have, but I just can’t take this guy seriously. He looks like Edward Cullen with bat wings. HAHAHA. 8/10 ‘cause it made me laugh.
* Tanawy's entry n.11: And lastly, in a category i like to call "I can't belive these are real", its the Funky Ferret; yes he and his cousins do exactly what the image shows. And the almost copyright-infinging Owlbear, yes they did not even try to distance themself from D&D with this one (ok they have a variant but is not saying much). There were others in the last category, but since they REALLY did not age gracefully to the modern standards of "acceptable" i prefered not show them.
I love Owlbears, they’re just such iconic fantasy monsters at this point, so he gets a solid 8/10 rating by default. It’s a pretty original take, too, focusing on the cuteness potential of the creature over the badass potential. I like that.
The Funky Ferret, though...
With a name like that this guy coulda been so cool. But he’s just a pretty generic design blended with a fart joke. What a bummer. 3/10.
And there we have it. Probably not exactly what you were thinking but I hope you like it. I don’t hate any of these guys. Some are more boring than others, but there’s something neat about each of them. I like the ones that take badass ideas and make them cute while remaining intimidating best out of all of them, and I think the Crocodog does this best with the Hacksaurus as the runner up. Crocodog is definitely my favorite of these, though. He gets the Best Good Boi award of Bestness.
Orgodemir gets an award, too, though, the “made AJ spit out his rum and Coke laughing” award. It’s not the most coveted, but it’s something.
I know this is a long one, and y’all may not want to reblog, but what do any of my followers think of these funky dudes? Leave a comment on this post or reblog with your answer in the tags!

Riverdale Season 5 Episode 9 Review – Chapter 85: Destroyer
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The mundane mingles with the supernatural in a enjoyably goofy episode.
Riverdale Season 5 Episode 8
“It is better to know the truth and make peace with it.”
In a bit of selfless wisdom, Cheryl states the above words to Betty in tonight’s bonkers installment. The context being that Betty doesn’t want to tell her mother that it looks like Polly is a goner. So she goes to Cheryl basically to inquire whether she feels that her cousin’s life would have been better had she not known Jason’s true fate.
The from-the-heart response that Cheryl gives her is quickly ignored, and Betty hides the truth from Alice. Since this is an episode of Riverdale, Betty’s deception immediately backfires on her when her FBI superior Glen arrives at the Cooper household to reveal Polly’s probable fate and kick Betty off the case. (Somewhere in the night, Veronica does a breathy cover of The Thompson Twins’ “Lies”).
Anyway, let’s get back to that quote for a second: It is better to know the truth and be at peace with it. That’s going to be the mantra for this entire review, as there are fundamental truths I’ve touched upon in the past that demand to be recognized before the healing can be reached. They are:
1- Archie’s football storyline is a total snooze.
Riverdale may have leaped seven years into the future, but Archie remains as doltish as ever. Granted, K.J. Apa is killing it this season as a grizzled version of the character, but the problem of Archie’s messiah complex still drags on. There are a lot of fascinating things happening on this series right now, and all the Bulldogs stuff does is slow down the breakneck pace that those interesting storylines are moving in. Aliens are in Riverdale, nobody cares about high school football right now. C’mon.
All that said, Britta rules.
2 – Any time that this series isn’t focusing on Mothmen Aliens is wasted time.
The show is taking serious liberties by mashing up Mothman and alien abduction mythologies, which really upends my In Search Of-influenced ideology about how the world works. I’ll forgive this because putting “aliens” on Riverdale is a work of stupid genius but also because I love watching Cole Sprouse and his starter goatee running around looking totally frantic.
3 – Hiram Lodge should be eaten by Mothmen Aliens.
Am I alone in thinking this could actually happen? What a coup for the series that would be! We know that Hiram is involved in some shady business, and all his SoDale shenanigans are a cover for some big secret. Therefore the mystery of the Lonely Highway is directly traced back to Hiram. Is he working for the government? Did aliens cure his mystery illness of last year and in turn is he feeding them Riverdale’s castoffs? Nothing is off the table here. Hiram’s machinations have been the same since he first appeared, but what if he really was working for aliens THE WHOLE TIME? Wouldn’t that be insane/amazing? No other show could pull that kind of shit off.
What I’m saying here is that Riverdale has been dancing with insanity since day one and it’s time to consummate the relationship.
4 – Betty Cooper, Alien Hunter needs to happen.
She fights werewolves in the comics, so is this really that crazy?
The ultimate mystery of whatever is happening this season will likely have a logic-based answer. That’s disappointing, as the Archieverse can be shown to handle witches, so are extraterrestrials that far off? (I’m still burned by the conclusion of the Gargoyle King saga, so I’m not expecting much here). Imagine though, the writing staff wants you to think that everything will wrap up with a plausible explanation and then, boom, it gives you bona fide aliens! A dream is a wish the heart makes…
This episode did give us clarity on a few things. We learned that both Jughead’s and Betty’s investigations lead back to the Lonely Highway and the mysteries — either terrestrial or otherworldly — unfolding there. Additionally, we were reminded that even though he’s ostensibly the lead character of this series, Archie is straight-up boring when he isn’t being attacked by bears or escaping from prison. With only one more episode before an extended hiatus, I hope next week brings us some resolution even though deep down I know that it won’t.
Riverdale Rundown
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
• Jughead’s student who writes the troubling story about Mothman abduction is Lerman Logan, a reference to The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Percy Jackson franchise star.
• Old Man Dreyfus’ name is clearly inspired by Close Encounters of the Third Kind star Richard Dreyfuss, which is fitting as the supernatural elements of this season are riffing on the sci-fi blockbusters of the 1970s and ’80s. Further proof of this can be seen by Drefyus telling Betty and Jughead about how Riverdale was a hotbed of Mothmen activity in the summers of 1977 and 1982, ones in which Star Wars and E.T. respectively ruled at the box office.
• Mr. Weatherbee threatens to fire Jughead if he doesn’t stay out of Lerman’s problems, apparently forgetting that Jughead isn’t really even a teacher and is only volunteering.
• Even objectively, Archie is a terrible coach. Can we please fold him into the Jughead/Betty storyline somehow? It’s great to see him and Veronica back together but damn do they need better plots to work with.
• One of the teams that defeats the Bulldogs is the Baxter High Ravens. In case you forgot already, Baxter High was one of the schools that Sabrina attended in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
• One has to wonder how the Vixens must feel about Cheryl, a woman in her twenties who graduated seven years ago, returning to her alma mater to steal the thunder of teenagers who live in Murdersville, U.S.A. and have no other outlet besides cheerleading by performing a self-aggrandizing Lady Gaga cover. Cheryl does a lot of messed up stuff on this show, but this act struck me as especially cruel.
• There’s no Toni and very little Tabitha Tate tonight. Boo.
• I still think they should sell the Pop Tate bobbleheads they keep showing.
• Kevin gets put through the emotional and physical ringer this episode. We learn that disparaging remarks from his mother impacted his self-image so much that he turned to cruising in Fox Forest. (The fate of Mrs. Keller is unknown, so it is possible that she will make an appearance in an upcoming episode). The assault that Kevin endured was brutal to watch, but the scene between Kevin and his father was powerful and cathartic. It will be interesting to see where the character of Kevin goes from here, because it is absurdly beyond time the writers give him a personality trait other than chronic thirst.
• Someone on the Riverdale production staff must really love Friday Night Lights.
• I don’t believe for a second that Polly is actually dead. There’s more of a chance of Hiram being eaten by Mothmen Aliens or Archie getting a compelling A-plot.
• I hate on the football storyline a lot in this review, but I do find all the talk about tainting the podunk town’s football league’s prestige to be weirdly funny.
• Pop’s sells take out cold cuts too? Helluva business, that Chok’lit Shoppe.
• “I’m saying that things happen, especially in Riverdale,” declares Jughead, in the most obvious statement in the episode.
• Please let them do a Mulder and Scully thing with Jughead and Betty.
• I think there’s more Mr. Weatherbee in tonight’s episode than there has been in the entire series to date. That’s a fantastic thing.
• So is Reggie done with Hiram for good now? He is such a key figure in the comics that it would be fantastic if the series figured out what the hell to do with him.
• Having reviewed this show from the first episode, I’ve learned a thing or two about how Riverdale storylines work. Therefore I’m calling it now: Glen is the Trash Bag Killer. You think so too, I know it.
• So far this season has drawn influence from everything from cryptozoological monsters to the real-life crimes of Patrick Kearney. Next week marks the mid-season finale, and the promise of everything from aliens to Pop’s possibly being blown up by Hiram? Whatever happens, cherish it, as the show then won’t return until July.

so it’s established in the series that iroh went on a spiritual journey after losing his son and that this is why he is always so open, kind, and loving to everyone. but!!! he clearly still had a lot of good in him before losing lu ten: (1) he expressed an interest in other cultures evidenced by the earth kingdom gifts he sent to zuko and azula as well his study of other martial arts to develop his lightning technique, showing an appreciation for cultural diversity and an interest in understanding other people, (2) he lied about the existence of dragons to protect the last two living ones from potential hunters, (3) comments made by other fire nation officials suggest that he’s just known for being this good natured, lighthearted, tea loving guy, (4) he’s shown to be playful with his son and nephew in flashbacks, a characteristic that other fire nation men of his stature (especially ozai) don’t share.
and i just keep thinking about what lu ten must have been like. like, he was probably a little goofy. a bit of a jokester. and azula probably thought he was embarrassing but zuko thought he was so, so cool and probably followed his big cousin like a little turtleduckling and lu ten probably loved it. and iroh’s heart would be so full watching lu ten and zuko together. lu ten teaching zuko little firebending tricks, encouraging him when he didn’t quite get it, distracting him with fun games when he got upset. i just like the idea of lu ten and zuko being inseparable okay it’s just CUTE.

April 2020 Book Review - Quarantine Brain Fry Edition
This month of quarantine was much more challenging for me that last March... I suppose because we’re really in the throws of it, and the “extended spring break” feel has worn off. Between general World Anxieties and the incredible challenges of trying to adapt my work into an online setting, my brain has been absolute mush -- and I have a feeling I’m not the only one. Most of my books this month are either very easy reads (comics and children’s novels) or rereads or both! Honestly, I’ve been playing a lot more Animal Crossing than I have been reading...
So the theme for this month of reading? Treat your brain to a rest, and go reread that favourite comic or picture book or graphic novel from when you were a kid. We don’t have libraries or book stores at the moment, so dig deep into your shelf for something you love that you haven’t touched in a while. Here’s what I read:
Ghost Hunters Adventure Club and the Mystery of the Grande Chateau
I’m going to start with best and most unexpected book that I read this month (although this is actually a New Book and not a reread, so maybe it’s a bad start). It’s a Hardy Boys parody novel, and yes it’s by the Game Grumps. The only reason I even found out it existed was because my brother heard about it and we decided that this would be our next Sibling Read Aloud. It made a great read aloud. I was rather skeptical at first, but it was genuinely very clever and very, very funny. There characters were fucking delightful, as they bumbled their way through the mystery, and we ended up accidentally reading almost half the book in one sitting because we couldn’t put it down once we got to endgame. If you like satire and Classic Youth Mystery then do yourself a favour and give this a go. I am desperate for a sequel.
ISHI: Simple Tips from a Solid Friend
A picture book that was recommended to some of the local elementary children who are dealing with isolation from school and their friends. Its beauty is in its simplicity. It shows Ishi, a very simple white stone, experience challenges that it must then find ways to cope with. Things like loneliness, feeling empty or scared, being sad... all things children (and adults, I very much appreciated this little story) may be experiencing. This is definitely a picture book, not a self-help book, but it’s still very encouraging and makes me want to go and create my own Ishi. There’s a reading of it is online, and if you’re feeling like having a solid stone friend reassure you, I would recommend going to listen to it!
Bone 1-5
So, the first in my long list of books that I reread: I’ve started rereading the Bone series for the first time in years. Hands down one of my all time favourite graphic novel series. If you haven’t read Bone, it’s a classic and one of the best example of American graphic novels imho. It’s about Fone Bone and his cousins who, after being driven out of Boneville by Phoney Bone’s money-grubbling stunts, have found themselves across a desert and in a strange, fantastical valley where nothing makes sense. The three of them get drawn into the strange mysteries and adventures of Thorn, her grandmother, and the village of Barrelhaven. Such a perfect blend of beautiful art, comedy and off-the-wall cartoon-level hijinks, as well as really intense, dark adventure and tension as the story unfolds.
Also created this sequence, which may be the funniest two panels ever drawn in a comic
Here Is Greenwood v1
A charming ‘90s manga from my stash that I decided to reread. Honestly one of my favourite feel-good mangas, because it’s such a simple, pure, good-hearted slice of life without some of the gimmicks that other manga use. It’s about Kazuya starting at an all-boys school partway into the year, and moving into the school’s dorms. The entire book is just about him being constantly pestered by the well-meaning characters that share the dorm with him. It’s just goofy and fun, and has the fantastic aesthetic of a good ‘90s manga. Also, it was one of those books that, while technically not ~queer~ was also ~queer enough~ for my deprived teenage soul.
Blood Of Elves
The fourth book of the Witcher series that I’ve finished. I’ll be honest, not my favourite. I really enjoyed the beginning, the whole espionage thing with Dandelion, and then Ciri with Geralt, the Kaer Morhen witchers, and Triss. That was all really fun. It felt like it dragged a lot more though after Ciri joined Yennefer... And yet I love Yennefer as a character, she is hilariously snide and clever and really sweet with Ciri. But it felt like a scene that could have been done in a couple chapters took up half the book. Maybe that’s just because, as I said, my brain was mush and I couldn’t deal with it. I have the next book and as soon as my brain doesn’t look like chicken noodle soup anymore I will be starting it!
The Mouse and the Motorcycle
You know I love a good animal adventure story, and this is one that I adored as a child. The story of Ralph, a young mouse living with his family in a rundown motel, and how he and a young human boy discover that they can understand each other through a shared passion for vehicles... in particular a red toy motorcycle. There’s just something heartwarming about Ralph racing around a motel on a tiny toy motorcycle that runs when he makes motorcycles noises. I’ll have to find the second one as soon as libraries are open again.
Kit: The Adventures of a Raccoon
Another animal adventure story from my childhood, although this one is more of a chapter book than a true novel. This is a book that I’ve been lowkey hunting for years and finally came across in a school library. It’s a more realistic look at what a raccoon’s life is like, from birth to adulthood. Rereading it, it’s not a particularly exciting book and wouldn’t have otherwise stood out to me, but there’s still something that calls to me. It’s very gentle and makes this raccoon’s growing and learning feel very soft and compassionate, even if there are tragedies and death.
A quick edit because it was only just now that I realized that this is a Canadian lit book! Always exciting to discover that a favourite is Canadian!
Calvin and Hobbes: Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat
Calvin and Hobbes, yet one more bullet to add to the list of Comfort Comics that I’ve pulled out to keep my mind entertained while I can’t quite process Proper Novels. I doubt there’s anything I can say about Calvin and Hobbes that hasn’t already been said. You’ve either read these books already, and are nodding along with me, or you haven’t and therefore are not a human being I can relate to.
Spy vs Spy
I dug out some of the old Spy vs Spy comics we had as kids. They’re basically falling to pieces, but it was fun -- like so many other books on this list -- to revisit something so familiar but which I haven’t looked at in years. These were a very odd experience to reread, because on one hand Spy vs Spy comics have such a simple, goofy premise it’s hard not to just grin and laugh while you read them, but also like... yup they sure are old and kinda ~problematique~ eh? Whatcha gonna do.
The Twisted Ones
The read aloud my brother and I did before Ghost Hunters, although we technically finished reading it at the very end of March, but too late for it to make that book roundup post. Look, I’m not going to defend myself here. Yes, I’ve read an obscene number of Five Nights at Freddy’s books. The first one of this series The Silver Eyes was honestly better than I would have expected. This sequel was not as good, unsurprisingly, but the main character is still so fucking bizarre, so different than the sort of protagonist I would normally expect from a series like this, that I can’t quite bring myself to stop reading them. And when I had a moment of Realization, about what might be in store for the third book, I genuinely screamed at my brother who was reading at the time. So yes. Somehow this youth horror is better than it has any right to be -- not good but better than it should be -- and yes I will be reading the third the second the libraries open again.
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
Another reread! This was a book I got as a birthday present when I was in... probably preschool? It’s a cross between a large picture book and a chapter book. It’s essentially a “novelization” of the original Disney movie, and it has such cute art to go along with it. Winnie the Pooh has always been a favourite of mine, and reading this old book was like a warm hug. Makes me want to see if I can get my VCR set up so I can watch that old movie again...
Frog and Toad Together
A friend found someone reading this book in a very asmr-style on youtube and recommended I listen because they found it super chill. And they were right! It is ridiculously chill. I’ve never read a Frog and Toad story before, but it’s really just a very cute old book that immediately launches you right back into grade one.
The BFG
This is my first time reading the BFG and it has all of Dahl’s usual charm and quirkiness. A young girl gets plucked out of an abusive orphanage by the Big Friendly Giant, who brings her to the terrifying Land Of Giants... all of which are bigger and crueller than the BFG, and who have an appetite for human flesh. It was quick and fun, and it’s always hard not to fall in love with Dahl’s sweet characters, especially this big eared, dream-catching giant.
