In the summer of 2005, a gruesome hunt leaves a lonely and hurting Dean to take refuge in a remote Minnesota motel. He only means to stop for the night, yet finds himself compelled to stay. Maybe it’s the old, well loved lodge, or his cozy little cabin, or the spectacular views off the cliffs of Lake Superior. Or maybe it’s Castiel, the guy who runs the place. Dean’s falling for him fast, but there’s more to complicate the matter than the family business. Something strange is afoot in the Northwoods…Is Cas just caught in the crossfire, or is he the one standing at the center of it all?

An early canon adjacent/alternate fic, this one has a young Dean Winchester hunting on his own. After he's injured, he ends up at a hotel run by Cas.

This one has a great mix of angst, mystery and sweetness. But what sticks around for me is the soft vulnerability of Dean and Cas in this fic. They are ultimately both lonely hearts finding one another.

The vibes of the lake hotel and local lighthouse are really cool and moody. This isn't just a soft hurt/comfort style fic. It's also delightfully twisty. The complex plot will keep you guessing.

But that’s the whole reason he’s here, isn’t it? He’s not out here hunting Humans. He’s not even hunting deer, or bears, or anything else that featured in Bambi. He’s out here, freezing his nuts off every night, because he’s hunting Angels.

Sometimes Dean wishes that Angels were like how they’re described in the Bible. How people from time too old for him to care much about thought Angels were messengers and warriors of God, protectors of Humans. He knows that how they’re really described in the Bible is actually pretty terrifying, but at least they were told by God that they’re supposed to love Humans, right?

That’s a thousand times better than what Angels really turned out to be.

WHERES THE ANGEL? YOU'RE HIM is such an insane exchange. Because It means that all the Purgatory monsters were gossiping about 1) Dean Winchester being locked in Purgatory and 2) frantically running around the monster land looking for his angel.
