I'm up to my usual antics with video games' character generators again having wasted over an hour messing around like this. This one is very limited but some of the options are surprisingly great for in-game cosplay.
Most of the BNHA cast and other random characters I made didn't work this well.
If you're curious, this is what I made my character look like. A little bland but I like it.
I wouldn't have gotten this yet with my current backlog but for the very first time the Humble Monthly had nothing I had already from sales/past bundles but everything in it also was things I was interested in or curious about. Admittedly I got it mainly for Outer Worlds and Temtem and Yakuza 4 (which I talked myself out of getting as part of the $35 full Yakuza collection minus dragon since I got stuck in Yakuza 0; good game but all my hate for that one guy). Even one of them but especially Outer Worlds would be worth the price. But I was also interested in Roadwarden and Merchant of the Skies. The rest are unfamiliar to me.
Who the heck thought of setting up a game of chess where the single unit on your side has a shotgun? I mean this in a good way.

Humble Choice (December 2024): Old World
Old World… where do I start with this month’s Humble Choice game that I am writing about? I bought it when it was still in “Early Access” over on Epic and while I spent hundreds of Hours playing it over there, I was still so very excited to see it in Humble Choice because now I can finally play it through Steam as well. You can read about my First Impressions here. About three years later, I…

Humble Choice is the best way for me to feed my desire to buy video game while still having money for food and medicine.
The fact that I don't care that much about playing most games immediately upon release is a big reason this works for me.
Anyway, I've seen at least two to three games every month that are really interesting in the ones on offer. This month, the big prize for me specifically is Persona 5 Strikers, but Jack Move and Station to Station also both look really cool.
Also inexpensive Remnant 2 as long as I claim the key this month, so that's neat.
#video games#humble bundle#humble choice#my biggest issue with humble is that I don't like DRM#but I don't have the money to get all the newest stuff on GoG like I'd prefer when possible#my second biggest issue is that I have a kinda bad feeling about how selling these indie games for so little translates to the creators' pa#I don't know how it works exactly so I'm a bit worried about it

rook being such a nobody and surrounded by more influential companions right after the obviously well known inquisitor could be really cool actually. that conversation w solas 'what will they call you after this is done' <- NO FUCKING CLUE LOL!! the idea that this millennia long, world-ending story of gods and a herald being controlled for a moment by a nobody is incredible. they start as an irritant and end having saved the world. nobody thanks them. they go back home. maybe they're literally wiped off the face of the world when they're trapped in the fade with the dread wolf! and most of all, their name is not remembered. literally, because they become a 'rook' to the inquisitor's king.
like i’m actually really liking the idea that the inquisitor and rook get conflated into the same person by the public and by history, and what little agency they had is taken away. you were never in control of this story. your narrative will be written by other people, just like every figurehead that came before you. you are not the chosen one. the choice to have faded out and see the irrelevancy as a boon, or struggle to make your name known (not rook, not the nickname, not the title) would have been so. interesting.
veilguard is a heroic story (and the game doesn’t even let you be rude most of the time) that has to end heroically (the evanuris are defeated in some way, the last archdemon dies, and most rooks climb down from minrathous to literal cheers and applause) but the hero themself is forgettable. narratively that could have been so funnnn. but it wasn’t on purpose so it just feels hollow.
#even the inquisitor is referred to by last name. and#re: irrelevancy…. not in a way that would have made it obvious#but humble responses leading to your erasure vs. prideful ones that look for glory turning you into something larger than yourself#and i think this was because of what veilguard actually is#a sequel that’s actually a soft reboot#veilguard isn’t just looking to establish a new status quo#its looking to make things as ‘complete’ as possible. rook leaves no great mark on the world#because it has to be fixed so the next game starts fresh. there’s a priority in making a clean slate#so rook fundamentally just. does almost nothing.#their companions have a serious hold in how history progresses (harding + dwarves#bellara + archive)#but the biggest choice they make is probably treviso v minrathous. and one of them ends up blighted anyway#so depending on choices the biggest legacy they leave behind is probably#the relative safety of a single city that isn’t even the capital of antiva#anyways. i have to lie down.#rook#txt#veilguard spoilers#dragon age

My dear lgbt+ kids,
If you sometimes come across the term “banned books” but don’t really know what it means, here’s a simple little introduction to the topic:
“Banned books” refers to books that have been censored or removed from libraries, schools, or bookstores due to objections from certain groups or individuals.
When we read that definition, I think a really common and understandable response is: „whoa, okay, these must be really bad books full of dangerous ideas!“… and in some way, that’s true.
Because, you see, to someone with a homophobic worldview, any book with a gay character is really bad and dangerous. And to a child abuser, any book that educates children on consent is really bad and dangerous.
Among the top reasons for book bans are lgbt+ content, sexual content (including sexual education or education on sexual abuse), themes of racism and themes like drug use or addiction. Over the years, many books with significant cultural and educational value have faced bans - and this continues to be an issue all around the world, including in the US.
When books are banned, it restricts the access to information people (including kids and teenagers) need to understand themselves and others. This negatively affects queer people and other marginalized groups (for example people of color or disabled people) but it also impacts everyone else. Diversity in literature enriches our understanding of the diversity of real life. It helps to build empathy, compassion, kindness and understanding. Access to different stories and viewpoints is vital for an inclusive society.
Censoring queer books in particular also normalizes the message that queer experiences are inappropriate or “dirty” - which, again, is really beneficial to homophobes and transphobes. If it feels safe for them to say that queer books harm children, it paves the way for all other kinds of discrimination and harassment of queer people.
Now you may think “this all makes sense when it comes to books with gay characters! But didn’t you also mention stuff like sexual abuse and addiction and racism up there? These are indeed bad and dangerous things!”
I think this is another really common thought. These things happen in real life and it can be uncomfortable to even think about them. But that’s precisely why we need books about those “uncomfortable” topics!
We may not like the idea that a child hears about racism or abuse - but in a world where kids can experience racism and abuse, they also need to be able to read about racism and abuse. They need to be able to say “this is what’s happening to me and this is not okay”. We need to be able to name bad things when they happen to us or when we witness them happening to others. We need an understanding of and a language for bad things. That’s the only way to fight the bad things.
Another thought you may have is “Okay, and now what? I don’t have the power to do anything about all this anyway”, and honestly I wouldn’t blame you for that one either. Hearing about book bans (on top of all the other negative stuff we hear about) can feel really depressing. But there are things you can do to push back and help keep diverse stories accessible - even if you are young or have limited resources!
Some ideas:
use your public library (many public libraries actively resist censorship and make banned books available!)
use a digital library (services like Libby and Project Gutenberg offer free access to many books)
look out for online petitions or letter-writing campaigns by organizations that oppose book bans (for example PEN in America)
look up if there are any “little free libraries” in your area (free book-sharing box operating on the honor system: anyone can take or leave a book for no cost)
look up if there are any book swapping events in your area
take part in reading groups, book clubs etc. (either in person or online)
And of course the big one: if you can afford to buy books - make a point to buy banned books (or more generally, queer books and books from marginalized authors and books on topics that frequently get banned)! As a starting point, you can find lists of banned books online. Wikipedia has one, for example.
If you have a bigger budget, you could even buy multiple copies and put some in your local “little free library” or bring them to book-swapping events or gift them to friends etc! (You could also ask your local public library (or school library or prison library or youth center or women’s shelter etc) if they take book donations, but you may want to hold off on buying before they say yes - not all of them can accept donations!).
Happy reading and resisting!
With all my love,
Your Tumblr Dad

i can hardly believe the bait and switch that elrond and the rings of power pulled on us this season. in the beginning, he is far too busy self-righteously blaming poor galadriel for falling for sauron's tricks. but then he puts on armour, lets his wild curls free, and transforms into a warrior-librarian covered in mud and blood, punching orcs in the face, and setting other orcs on fire. and i loved it.
#no because my main issue with rings of power is the way it writes women (it's soooo bad it's painful it's really steeped in some ugly stuff)#the harfoots are the only storyline that passes the bechdel test (and it is by far the worst storyline in the show so does it count??)#and the way galadriel is constantly belittled and lectured by elrond who is her junior in rank and age and wisdom in the lore is... a choic#(it feels very male showrunners wanting to 'humble' a female character to me and nothing to do with elrond and yeah i fucking hate it)#and because of the ragebait weirdos people who love the show are determined to be really super positive about it at all times#which i understand the compulsion (i do) but we do need room to speak in a thoughtful way about the show's painful gender bias#(one of the reason the kiss was really degrading is because it was so steeped in *gender stuff* as in elrond would never have kissed a man)#(and the kiss after a 1/2 a season of him berating her for the halbrand stuff ... yeah ... yeah ... yeah ... really uncomfortable man.... )#and poor elrond is a victim of this too because he's the vessel through which the male showrunners act out their unchecked sexism#but when they put aside those biases and let elrond be elrond the character really sings (obviously but y'now)#elrond#trop#the rings of power

love seeing your takes on mouthwashing and how sane they are. everything's so black or white. I like how you acknowledge curlys abuse under jimmy (which I honestly didn't quite notice when I first watched a playthrough. should rewatch w this in mind) and how that very much doesn't "forgive" his inaction towards Anya and Her abuse under jimmy. I think what happens to him despite all his issues (bc he clearly wasn't OK 😊✌🏼) is very much karmic. I really did hurt huh
I hate the take that what happened to him is karmic as becoming disabled and being tortured is like not in any way an equal consequence for not taking more action against Jimmy. It is a consequence as is the whole game for everyone but it’s one that is very much established as being undeserved and extreme as everyone else’s but Jimmy’s fate.
Thank you for liking my takes but I also try to point out that this exact sort of framing of the events and what happened to Curly is bad especially if you are gonna factor in his own abuse into the equation of his inaction/ineffective acts. It’s like “saying yeah he deserved the abuse he was already going through to escalate because he didn’t do enough” which is like not a message the game tries to deliver at all. It’s like the game shows that abusers escalate
Karma and punishment are not concepts that I think should be directly tied to Curly’s fate especially since during the game and even in discussion he takes on too many consequences of someone else’s actions. Like this framing is the direct thing I describe taking the discussion away from Jimmy, P.E and the factors that created the environment in the first place.
#Maybe I’m just a bleeding heart for fictional characters that suffer but the fandom has a weird attachment to retribution#as if retribution is not a damning desire in the game like the game is about what happens when you#lack the capability to try and do better or go back on it and that is about all of them but mainly Jimmy and how it intensifies#the suffering of those around him like not saying Curly is excused but the think pieces about Curly make on whether he deserved it make it#sound like he was some empty headed dolt that didn’t know women faced oppression or had any issues of his own#and that he needed to be humbled to understand as if his toxic relationship with Jimmy is not an aspect in the forefront and his apathy in#life like becoming disabled isn’t karma yes his condition parallel Anya’s feeling but it’s also reveals all the way Jimmy was already#treating him poorly and how it got worse now that he had more power over him like again he harasses Anya still but noticed he takes out most#of his frustration on Curly now like idk what more I can say#I hate the idea someone deserves to be disabled and go through such a brutal experience comments like that are weird#like this is not an argument of Curly suffered too with Anya it is they are both suffering at all points with Jimmy#and it is not at all helpful to any conversation to try to scale and compare both their experiences against each other#but rather how they both reacted to Jimmy and how it affected how they handled/viewed everything pre and post crash#like I hope this hurts is likely a comment on the whole system that allowed it all to happen not specifically about any character or what#they did like it never did not hurt that’s the point none of the choices made felt good for anyone like sorry this is not about you anon#just the general sentiment of post crash curly and deserving cause by the logic people use then Swansea deserved to watch Daisuke suffer and#have to kill him because he didn’t kill Jimmy or support Anya better like it’s crazy to me#like yes represents him not being able to do more anymore but it is again pointed out to be unfair because of what resources they had#like he suffers due to P.Es restriction even when it comes to his care because they under supply them despite how long and dangerous#and isolating and short staffed their jobs are.#got a little heated sorry anon I just think the idea someone needs to suffer for what Jimmy did outside of Jimmy makes me mad#mainly because it’s never like realistic or just or acknowledges the facets of abuse#mouthwashing#ask#anon#mouthwashing game#curly mouthwashing
