Riot – Hugh Masekel Riot – Hugh MasekelaHands up who knows (without looking it up on the internet) what Hugh Masekela’s 2nd best performing song on the US Hot 100 was? Okay, so I did look it up and you probably guessed from the title of this blog entry that it was ‘Riot’. It peaked at 55 which was 54 places lower than ‘Grazing In The Grass’, his biggest hit.The track is a short piece, clocking…

Song of the Day - Today marks the 55th anniversary of the Hugh Masekela “Grazing In The Grass” being awarded a gold record - July 18th, 1968. The instrumental was a huge hit, and two days following its being made a gold record, it shot to the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. This recording by South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela was the first for this song, but it would quickly also get recorded with lyrics which were written and sung by the group The Friends of Distinction. Both versions were hits. Masekela was recording an album at Gold Studios in Hollywood, and he was about three minutes short of his contractural 30-minute requirement of material. So, Masakela and producer Stewart Levine took this single record Masakela had brought from Zambia of Freddie Gumbi called “Mr. Bull #5”, a novelty song, and they played with it for a few minutes before just kinda jamming it into three minutes of “Grazing in the Grass”. They employed Gumbi’s use of cowbell, which was there since the song was about a pasture and a bull, and yes, grazing. The two of them thought of their jam track as a kind of spoof and just filler really. The original songwriter, Philomen Hou was given full songwriting credit. Then their record label boss at Uni Records heard it and recognized it as “a smash” He was spot on. He had it made and released as a single. And it was indeed smashing!

Song of the Day: The Friends of Distinction, "Grazing In The Grass"
Happy 82nd birthday to Barbara Jean Love, a member of the singing group The Friends of Distinction in the mid-to-late 1960’s and early 1970’s. She took time off at the end of the ‘60’s to have a child. “Grazing in the Grass” was an instrumental hit for Hugh Masakela in 1968; the Friends’ lead singer Harry Elston added lyrics in 1969. The song reached #3 on the Hot 100, #5 on the Hot Soul Singles…

Top five underrated songs or artists, need new music to listen to
O fuk idk if I can think of five good ones but here goes
1) Hugh Masakela. One of the best jazz artists on the planet. I'm talking Louis Armstrong tier. Highly underrated outside of Africa.
2) Thomas Mapfumo, the king of Chimurenga music and a hero of the Zimbabwean revolution.
3) Sons of Champlin, a bay area psychedelic band who could've made it big. Lots of brass and interesting arrangements. They were overshadowed by the grateful dead
4) Any John Zorn project. Dude's really good at torturing jazz instruments. I particularly like painkiller.
5) auhghhhb my brain hurts from thinking. Iunnooo I'm sorry

South African here with some recommendations of black artists I've had the pleasure of growing up listening to that ya'll should definitely go and immerse yourselves in. Because it's all fucking beautiful.
Firstly, let's just have Miriam Makeba absolutely own the scene. Just one of the best musicians to come out of South Africa EVER!
youtube
Then, bringing up the legendary Bra Hugh Masakela is obvious.
youtube
Then no list of South African musicians is EVER complete without Meadowlands. It's been performed by a bunch of musicians over the years but the original was by Strike Vilakazi.
youtube
I ESPECIALLY WANT EVERYONE TO LISTEN TO MAFIKIZOLO!!! I made my parents listen to the song below in specific on repeat as a kid and I will do it to you all!
youtube
And that's the list! There absolutely is more I could add but this seems like a good start!
the current trend of "tumblr users embarrassing themselves by proudly announcing why they don't listen to any music made by black people" is really astounding.
i cannot help but think this is a direct result of liberal White Guilt and how people have interpreted "anti-racism" as form of cultural self-segregation - the kind of person who thinks trying to cook chicken curry is cultural appropriation, or sends white people anon hate for wearing a kimono (yes, this kind of discourse happened). like, "oh, no, i could never participate in this culture, i'd get my evil white hands all over it! it would be more Progressive if I only did White things."
if you're a poc you've seen this, i'm sure - this deer-in-the-headlights stare you can get from white people when you play music / show art / share a story / anything that is Racially Coded, this total refusal to actually engage with it out of fear that it is in some way Wrong for them to have any opinion on it. because they read somewhere that it's bad to use AAVE but the only lesson they actually learned from that is "gotcha, white people are not allowed to interact with other cultures as punishment for my White Crimes. this helps to fill up the gaping pit of my white guilt and makes me one of the Good People." this transforms their discomfort around non-white cultures (black culture, especially, i should add) into a kind of virtue
anyway if you are white and reading this. go listen to some fucking haliu mergia. ethiopian jazz. will knock your dick right off. go listen to rap or reggae or bollywood and have a genuine reaction to it - like, an actual, from-the-heart reaction. you are allowed to not like some of it. but you will definitely like at least a little. yes, you can compare it to lemon demon (or whatever) if that helps you get into it and that's your only point of reference. maybe don't say that part out loud. but don't, like, separate yourself from it, like you are seeing it in a museum and the only polite thing to do is go "ahh, huh, very interesting, so much culture here."

Does anyone know any songs that begin similarly to how this song ends?
Does anyone know any songs that begin similarly to how this song ends? This song “Riot!” by Earl Sweatshirt (cover of Riot by Hugh Masakela) ends with what I (a music layman) can decipher to be an arpeggiated synth. Does anyone know any songs that begin with a sound similar to this? Also am I even describing the sound correctly? Thank you! https://ift.tt/ohDlkPx Submitted August 23, 2024 at 06:00PM by UsedSir https://ift.tt/cElRO8y via /r/Music

apa yg saya dengarkan di jun 2024.
lionel ritchie, can't slow down (funk, soul, pop). nampak kurang nyaman dengan musik elektronika dari 80an. mainkan musik2 soul untuk nya agar nyaman saat dinyanyikan
michael bolton, the hunger (soft rock). kenapa ga bikin band hard rock aja ya?!
sheena easton, you could have been with me (ballad). paduan vokal melengking dan harmoni pop ala beach boys, sisa sisa musik akhir 70an terdengar cukup sering di album perdana ini
chaka khan, i feel for you (elctronic, funk, soul, pop). dgn musik yg amat modern pun, chaka khan masih mampu menghibur
the cottons, harapan (pop). kenapa rilisan terbaru the cottos amat begitu berbeda. mungkin kebanyakan dengerin rilisan terakhir bangkutaman
dennis edwards, don't look up any further (soul, disco, rnb). bersuara lembut dan terkontrol juga tdk berlebihan, plus musik elektronika modern dari zaman 80an siap menemani diri ini menjalani macetnya kota besar
madonna, self titled (dance pop). debut album yg syahdu... mendengar suara madonna bagai berada di surga
armlock, trust (acoustic, indie rock, folk rock). effort minimal tapi hasil maksimal 😭
ibrahim hesnawi, the father of libyan reggae (funk, soul, reggae). saya tak pernah menghisap ganja, tapi ada teman yg pernah gele karenanya, saya rasa dibanding harus menghisap ganja saya akan merekomendasikan album ini untuknya saja
various artist (now-again records), welcome to zamrock! vol. 1 (rock, funk, soul). album kompilasi band rock keren dari zambia, sebuah sub kulter yg tak pernah diprediksi, dan mereka sudah hadir dari early 70's menghadirkan musik mixed antara psikedilia dgn rock ala led zeppelin, stones serta suara lantang ala james brown
various artist (now-again records), welcome to zamrock! vol.
hugh masakela, the chisa years 1965-1975 (funk, soul, folk). suara megah dari masa lalu yang sangat masa kini
various artist (now-again records), forge your own chains (funk, soul, psychedelic). vocal, rythm gitar, bassline pattern dati berbagai musisi yg sangat mengantui dan menghipnotis ❤️🔥
various artist (rare groove records), african rare groove (funk, soul, psychedelic, disco). semenyenangkan mendengarkan sunshine pop/experimental hip hop/funk/jazz/soul dgn bahasa yg tak dapat dimengerti
the funkees, dancing time (rock, funk, soul). seperti the doors tapi dengan gairah lebih tinggi
dongker, menghibur domba diatas puing (punk, hardcore). inimah cock sparrer!
various artist (now again records), wake up you! rise and fall of nigerian rock vol. 1 (rock, funk, soul). kemarahan yang dituangkan dalam alunan groovy yg funk
various artist (now again records), wake up you! rise and fall of nigerian rock vol. 2 (psychedelic). terdengar kegelisahan, cemas dan sedikit riff iommy di beberapa lagu yg diselimuti kegelapan
the southern university jazz ensemble, live At The 1971 american college jazz festival (jazz). seperti mendengar scene terakhir dari school of rock, alvine batiste adalah jack black dalam dunia jazz!
the boris gardiner happening, ultra super dub vol. 1 (reggae). angin semilir, batu karang, hantaman ombak yg kadang nakal terlalu kencang melewati bibir pantai, orang berselancar, dan pemuda pemuda bermain sepakbola pantai. adalah gambaran yg tepat untuk album yg telah lama hilang ini
the boris gardiner happening, ultra roots dub vol. 2 (reggae). sisa sisa terakhir kreativitas yg di peras sampai kering
the stark reality, discovers hoagy carmichaels music shop (jazz, funk, soul). noise, fuzz, psikedelia terbalut dalam tiap track jazz sepanjang album. dan ini merupakan album experimental paling gila, karena menggubah ulang lagu anak2 menjadi lagu paling sikedelik paling addiktif
cek playlistnya disini!
