Not to mention, at the height of the 2020 BLM movement and police brutality protests, Hozier announced that all proceeds from Jackboot Jump would go toward Black Lives Matter and the NAACP
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Words so often fail in a time like this, but where words might fall short, failing to offer them at all is far worse.
The work of Black artists has always been a guiding light for me since before the time I ever picked up a guitar or sang a note. It's fundamental importance to the canon of popular music across the globe is something I've always tried to express in interviews and in the work itself. Non-Americans and Europeans like myself so often take their first glimpse of American culture through the key hole of Black musical expression and innovation.
Like every musician who's work stems from a tradition of rock n' roll or blues, I owe a great deal to it's legacy.
In times like this it's good for everyone in the music industry to be reminded that it's not enough for us to simply pick and choose what of Blackness is worthy of our attention. It's not enough for predominantly white societies to enjoy the benefits of those gifts only to turn the other way when the realities of the system they were made under cause us to feel uncomfortable. What's more, Black communities cannot be expected to dismantle the racist systems that were built by the societies they have been violently dispossessed by time and time again. Meaningful action is required from those who are afforded such incredible privilege within those same systems if true lasting change is to ever take place.
I have always worn my heart on my sleeve when it came to being asked questions on issues of injustice, historical or otherwise. Anyone who knows me well understands I'm often reluctant to offer visibility on efforts I lend towards causes I believe in, for fear that it should come across as shallow or performative. That said, I so understand the need for proactive and visible outspokenness when it is precisely silence that has failed Black people time and time again.
Over the past week I have been having discussions with trusted activists at home in Ireland, looking for ways that I can better lend myself to the efforts of dismantling racist systems here in my own country. Irish society has a great deal to reflect upon with regard its own problems with racism and how it manifests in institutions here, be it anti-Black racism, or the often ignored issues of anti-Traveller racism that is tolerated here day to day. These are things that require the commitment of white settled people if they are to be truly addressed.
There is so much to reflect upon in this moment, to educate ourselves on and learn how we can be better allies, citizens, neighbours and friends. There is so much to contront and, as necessity dictates, to be confronted by. There is so much to dismantle and there is so, so much to build.
I will be pledging further donations to Black Lives Matter, The NAACP, The Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland, and Pavee Point Traveller and Roma Centre.
Further more, as footage of ongoing police brutality continues to make its way across the water and cause us revulsion on this side of the Atlantic, I'll be diverting all royalties from the song 'Jackboot Jump' to Black Lives Matter and NAACP in perpetuity. Beidh an bua agaibh.
Le Grá Mór
Andrew H Byrne”

🙃 Regular reminder that while Hozier has amazing love songs, he is ALSO very outspoken about his leftist politics, specifically anti-fascism, anti-racism, reproductive rights, Palestinian rights and more.
Take Me To Church and Foreigner’s God are scathing critiques of organized religion, specifically the Catholic Church and the colonization of Ireland.
Moment’s Silence is about oral sex but it’s ALSO about how that specific sexual act is often distorted to a show of power rather than that of love.
Nina Cried Power is an homage to various (mostly Black) civil rights activists from the US and Ireland and a call to follow their path.
Be criticizes anti-migrant policies and Trump and his ilk.
Jackboot Jump is about the global wave of fascism and about protest and resistance.
Swan Upon Leda is about reproductive rights and the violent colonial oppression of Ireland and Palestine.
Eat Your Young is about the ruinous way the 1%/capitalism and arms dealers prioritize short-term profit over everything else to the detriment of the youth/99%
Butchered Tongue is about Irish and other indigenous languages being suppressed and erased by imperial powers.
If any of the above surprised you, please, please delve deeper into Hozier’s music, you’re missing such an important part of his work.

had a dream I went to a hozier concert and mr. hozier stopped singing and pointed to me in the crowd and asked me to go get him some extra crispy tofu and a blueberry shake for after the show and then the crowd passed his debit card to me and when I got it I could see his real legal name was Horace Bob-omb

Things the GO fandom as a whole have just accepted as canon
Crowley's favorite word is "ngk-"
They kissed in 1941. That's why the vibe was so awkward during the Holy Water scene in 1967.
The fire extinguishers in s2 are all from Crowley because of the bookshop fire in s1
Aziraphale is a huge flirt. Crowley gets flustered easily.
They adopted Jimbriel and Muriel
Crowley steals all the genders but Aziraphale is content with the lack of them
Crowley would go to bars and rant to Hozier, not knowing it was him, then hear his songs on the radio and break down because the lyrics understanded him.
He was also besties with Freddie Mercury
Oscar Wilde was in love with Aziraphale
Gabriel is Kenough
