Aca Top 10: Disney Villains — VoicePlay music video
youtube
Many actors contend that it's more fun to play baddies who get to indulge their darker desires without regret. The same often applies in musicals, whether they're on stage or screen. Disney knows how to craft a good villain song. These are some of their most fun, slick, seductive, and dastardly.
Details:
title: Aca Top 10 – Disney Villains
original songs / performers: "Friends on the Other Side" by Keith David as Doctor Facilier in The Princess and the Frog (2009); [0:33] "Mother Knows Best" by Donna Murphy as Mother Gothel in Tangled (2010); [0:50] "Trust In Me" by Sterling Holloway as Kaa in The Jungle Book (1967); [1:08] "The Siamese Cat Song" by Peggy Lee as Si and Am in Lady and the Tramp (1955); [1:28] "Oogie Boogie's Song" by Ken Page as Oogie Boogie in The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993); [1:52] "Cruella De Vil" by Bill Lee as Roger Radcliffe in 101 Dalmatians (1961); [2:16] "Gaston" by Jesse Corti as LaFou & Richard White as Gaston in Beauty and the Beast (1991); [2:50] "Hellfire" by Tony Jay as Claude Frollo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996); [3:06] "Poor Unfortunate Souls" by Pat Carroll as Ursula in The Little Mermaid (1989); [3:25] "Be Prepared" by Jeremy Irons as Scar in The Lion King (1994)
written by: "Friends on the Other Side" by Randy Newman; "Mother Knows Best" by Alan Menken & Glenn Slater; "Trust In Me" by Robert & Richard Sherman; "The Siamese Cat Song" by Peggy Lee & Sonny Burke; "Oogie Boogie's Song" by Danny Elfman; "Cruella De Vil" by George Bruns & Mel Leven; "Gaston" by Alan Menken & Howard Ashman; "Hellfire" by Alan Menken & Stephen Schwartz; "Poor Unfortunate Souls" by Howard Ashman & Alan Menken; "Be Prepared" by Elton John & Tim Rice
arranged by: Geoff Castellucci & Layne Stein
release date: 22 March 2019
My favorite bits:
Layne kicking things off with scampering percussion before settling into a swingy groove
J.None showing off his smooth lower range
the vibratto Earl puts on that final high ♫ "motheeer" ♫
both Eli and Layne doing snaky hand motions during "Trust In Me" 🐍
Geoff's big bass drops on ♫ "ey-yyyes" ♫ and the final ♫ "meee" ♫
that crunchy harmony on ♫ "don't pleeease" ♫
all the shenanigans with the tiny kitty figurine 🐈
getting a preview of the "Oogie Boogie" production to come
that funky take on the second half of "Cruella"
the back row's dubious reactions to Geoff asserting his intimidation factor in "Gaston" as Layne fixes his hair
the extended transition — ♫ "Gimme hip-to-hip" ♫ ::Eli and J start flossing:: 🕺 "Chapstick!" ::Earl holds up a tube::
the clever coordination of ♫ "[tur]-ning me to" ♫ and ♫ "number two" ♫ at the end of "Hellfire"
Layne's bubbly percussion during "Poor Unfortunate Souls"
Earl getting annoyed at J and Eli joining him on the lyrics of "Be Prepared" before they return to harmonies
the three octave unison between Geoff and Earl
that nice clean ending
Trivia:
○ VoicePlay had recorded or performed several of these songs before.
They did a full version of "Cruella de Vil" in collaboration with Disney for the Diamond Edition release of 101 Dalmatians on Blu-ray. They also included an excerpt in their aca-Disney medley to celebrate 20 years of Disney shows on Broadway.
"Gaston" is part of their Beauty and the Beast medley, Tale As Old As Time, on their 2012 album "Once Upon an Ever After".
"Be Prepared" is part of their "OUaEA" Lion King medley, The King Has Returned. (That's also where the snippet over the end screen is from.)
"Mother Knows Best" was part of "The Story of Rapunzel" that they performed at Disney World's 2015 Social Media Moms Celebration.
○ They had also previously created a shorter villains medley including several of these songs for Jonathan Freedman as part of their Disney Sessions collaboration with the Aladdin stage cast.
○ Since this video was released, the guys have recorded longer versions of several more of these tunes.
"Friends on the Other Side" was their Halloween video for 2021, as well as their first reunion with J.None after he left to join the U.S. Navy Band.
"Oogie Boogie's Song" was their Halloween video later in this year.
"Poor Unfortunate Souls" was included in their Little Mermaid medley with Rachel Potter a year and a half later.
"Hellfire" was their Halloween video in 2023, also with J.None as the featured guest.
Geoff did a short of "Trust In Me" on his solo channel in 2024.
○ The guys' shirts are once again thematically appropriate.
Eli — Darth Vader from Star Wars in the style of Leonardo Da Vinci's "Vitruvian Man" drawing
Earl — the face of Hades from Hercules in blue and purple linework with yellow eyes and teeth, surrounded by blue flames, all with a glow effect meant to imitate neon lights
J.None — a full-body portrait of Claude Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame with one hand extended to the side (I couldn't find the exact design, but I found one that's somewhat close and did a bit of editing to get it closer.)
Geoff — the stylized face of Scar from The Lion King
Layne — Dr. Facilier from The Princess and the Frog mirrored in the style of a playing card, with glowing red cards floating near his outstretched fingers and his name on a banner across the middle
○ Geoff later mentioned in his interview on The Charismatic Voice that he'd considered auditioning for Gaston at Disney World when he worked there, but that the guys who play the role are usually four to six inches taller than him due to the costume and choreography required.
○ They garnered a bit of praise from prolific a cappella arranger Rob Dietz, who they'd met during The Sing-Off, and who would become a frequent collaborator in a few years.
○ An artist fan was inspired to create a gender bent version of Cruel-Layne De Vil.
drawing by rtlndr_ on Instagram
○ The boys busted out some of their best evil laughs to further entertain their social media followers.
instagram
○ This is the final entry in a mini-series within their "Aca Top 10" series, which was preceded by countdowns for "Disney Heroes" and "Disney Sidekicks" over the previous year and a half.

Ed Wood (1994, Tim Burton)
05/04/2024
Ed Wood is a 1994 film by Tim Burton, inspired by the life and cinematographic works of Ed Wood, defined as "the worst director of all time". The role of the director is played by Johnny Depp.
Presented in competition at the 48th Cannes Film Festival, the film, freely inspired by Rudolph Grey's biography Nightmare of Ecstasy, received two Oscars and numerous other awards. This is also Tim Burton's first feature film without music composed by Danny Elfman, due to creative differences between the two. The director chose composer Howard Shore.
In 1952, the young and penniless artist Edward D. Wood Jr. runs a dilapidated theater company, and is looking for funds for his debut in the world of cinema. When he learns from Variety Magazine that the producer George Weiss is looking for a director to shoot a biographical film on the events of Christine Jorgensen, he enthusiastically goes to Weiss asking him to direct the film, certain that the fact that he also loves wearing women's clothes can represent a point in his favor.
Wood accidentally meets one of his idols, the elderly actor Bela Lugosi and accompanies him to his home, starting to form a sincere friendship with him. By promising him that Lugosi will be part of the cast for little money, she manages to convince him to direct the film about Jorgensen, which now has a new title: Glen or Glenda.
His girlfriend Dolores Fuller advises him to produce his new film alone.
The shooting of the film thus ends and the film is renamed Bride of the Monster. To make matters worse, it turns out that Bela Lugosi was a drug addict.
Wood manages to convince the religious congregation to which his landlord belongs to entrust him with the money allocated to produce a film on the Apostles of Jesus to make a science fiction film, letting him understand that with the box office receipts the capital would multiply allowing him to make many films with a religious background. The new film is called Plan 9 from Outer Space and Wood reuses some impromptu scenes shot by Lugosi before his death by having Kathy's chiropractor, Dr. Tom Mason, impersonate him for the remaining scenes.
The making of the film was disastrous to say the least due to the tantrums of the first actress, Vampira, the interference of the Baptist producers, the chronic lack of funds and not least the casual charlatanism of Wood, who didn't care in the slightest about how uncredible were the acting, the scenes and special effects. One day, in the throes of a nervous breakdown, Wood goes drinking in a bar, where he meets his idol Orson Welles, who is also worried about the troubled production of a film. The film ends with Ed Wood attending the premiere of Plan 9 from Outer Space, where he is greeted by enthusiastic applause from the audience, and then leaves the theater with Kathy and goes to Las Vegas and gets married.
Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski conceived the idea of writing a screenplay about Ed Wood's life while studying at the USC School of Cinematic Arts.

IT'S A WONDERFUL KNIFE - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: RLJE Films & Shudder
SYNOPSIS: “A year after saving her town from a psychotic killer on Christmas Eve, Winnie Carruthers’ life is less than wonderful — but when she wishes she’d never been born, she finds herself in a nightmare parallel universe and discovers that without her, things could be much, much worse. Now the killer is back, and she must team up with the town misfit to identify the killer and get back to her own reality.” -Press Notes
REVIEW: Michael Kennedy’s screenplay for IT’S A WONDERFUL KNIFE does for “It’s A Wonderful Life” what his script for “Freaky” did for “Freaky Friday.” Director Tyler MacIntyre does a solid job of balancing the satire and horror to create another yuletide terror ride.
The narrative does a nice job of setting up the tale with many elements that deconstructs Winnie’s world once she is transported to the alternate universe. I appreciate that it is a linear mystery that Winnie has to solve unlike a film like “Happy Death Day” where the main character has to keep going back until they get it right. The story capitalizes on a bunch of the concepts George Bailey experiences once he enters Clarence’s alternate world, but by way of a “Scream” film. Clearly Henry Waters is the contemporary Mr. Potter. I thought it was amusing how Winnie’s relationship issues are also resolved by her encounters in this alternate universe. The satire is delightful and much of the tone present in Kennedy’s “Freaky” is here. I appreciate his sense of humor, as he includes such Easter eggs as a character named Gale Prescott.
I enjoyed the production designs and locations. The killer's costume design, the Angel, is a nice homage to Ghostface from “Scream” and the angel reference from “It’s a Wonderful Life.” They found the perfect town in Canada for their location and there was an element to it that was reminiscent of George Bailey’s and Marty McFly’s hometown. MacIntyre does a solid job of balancing character development with action sequences to sustain the film’s energy level. The visual effects are effective, but nothing groundbreaking. The special effects and blood are solid, but not as bloody as in “Scream.” Russ Howard III’s score strikes a nice balance between satire and terror with often a playfulness of a Danny Elfman score. The rest of the costumes are okay and could have used something, maybe a few more ugly sweaters or something.
The film features some veteran genre actors such as Katharine Isabelle from “Ginger Snaps” who plays Aunt Gale and William B. Davis, the ‘Smoking Man’ from “The X-Files” as Roger Evans. Jane Widdop, who plays Winnie, and is Laura Lee on Showtime’s “Yellowjackets,” brings a lot of charm and charisma to the role. She brings a lot of energy to her performance. Justin Long often creates likable characters you want to hate. Here he gives his character this peculiar, annoying accent that just makes him so memorable and unlikable, truly. There are some other nice casting choices that will appeal to a variety of fans. It’s a solid cast that gels together and makes for an entertaining view.
It seems every holiday season another film comes along that adds to the holiday horror cannon. In 2022 it was Adult Swim’s Yule Log. For 2023 writer Michael Kennedy and director Tyler MacIntyre turn their sick and twisted sights on “It’s A Wonderful Life,” as they turn it into demented roller coaster ride for genre fans with IT’S A WONDERFUL KNIFE. Presenting another darkside of the holiday season, once again proving capitalism is a dangerous thing. A solid serial killer satire that is worthy of a place in your Christmas horror film rotation with “Black Christmas,” (good god the original!), “Silent Night,” and anything else that helps you put the red in your holiday season.

New Bern, NC — VoicePlay live performances
Even as they were swiftly approaching the completion of nearly 100 shows at Disney World for the season, VoicePlay popped up to North Carolina for a full holiday concert on the weekend before Christmas.
.
youtube
With the amount of travel Americans tend to do between Thanksgiving and Christmas, this comedic medley is extra relatable during the holiday season. If only all of our family sing-a-longs sounded this good.
Details:
title: Road Trip
original songs / performers: [1:27] "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" by Tiny Tim; [1:45] "Orinoco Flow" by Enya; [2:03] "Cum On Feel the Noize" by Quiet Riot; [3:12] "Big Shot" by Billy Joel; [3:25] "I Wanna Rock" by Twisted Sister; [3:34] "Voices Carry" by ’Til Tuesday; [3:52] "Shout" by Tears For Fears; [4:07] "Why Can't We Be Friends?" by War; [4:17] "That Smell" by Lynyrd Skynyrd; [5:00] "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" by Chicago; [6:25] "We Just Disagree" by Dave Mason; [6:45] "Hello" by Adelle
written by: "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" by Al Dubin & Joe Burke; "Orinoco Flow" by Eithne "Enya" Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin & Roma Ryan; "Cum On Feel the Noize" by Noddy Holder & Jim Lea; "Big Shot" by Billy Joel; "I Wanna Rock" by Dee Snider; "Voices Carry" by Robert Holmes, Aimee Mann, Michael Hausman, & Joey Pesce; "Shout" by Roland Orzabal & Ian Stanley; "Why Can't We Be Friends?" by Papa Dee Allen, Harold Ray Brown, B.B. Dickerson, Lonnie Jordan, Charles Miller, Lee Oskar, Howard E. Scott, & Jerry Goldstein; "That Smell" by Allen Collins & Ronnie Van Zant; "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" by Peter Cetera & David Foster; "Hello" by Adele Adkins & Greg Kurstin
arranged by: Geoff Castellucci
performance date: 20 December 2015
My favorite bits:
Eli starting to doze off and tip over until he's startled awake by Earl's yelp
Tony using his flowy jacket as a blanket
sleepy Geoff rubbing his eyes as he's rudely awakened by the bickering
Earl's little bunny nose sniffing
the exchange of annoyed watch tapping
Layne almost getting Eli to break with the different interruption
Trivia:
VoicePlay made a professionally filmed version of this medley / skit during the 2014 Sing-Off tour.
Layne usually interrupts with "Royals" by Lorde, but sometimes changes it up, as he does here, to try to make the other guys laugh.
.
youtube
These guys love The Nightmare Before Christmas, and have recorded several songs from its fantastic soundtrack. But this was the first one to join their live show repertoire.
Details:
title: What's This?
original performers: Danny Elfman as Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
written by: Danny Elfman
arranged by: Layne Stein
performance date: 20 December 2015
My favorite bits:
those lovely opening harmonies
Tony excitedly getting in everybody's personal space
the alternating pliés and relevés to emulate the carolers' vehicle in the movie
♫ "I might possibly go daffy…" ♫ followed by Layne putting a quack in his percussion line
slo-mo snowball fight!
♫ "cozy in their dre-eam ⇓ laaand ⇓" ♫ "That was weird." "Sorry."
their monster walks as they regroup
that sharp, clean final chord
Trivia:
This song was a staple of their holiday shows for many years, particularly during their Disney World residencies for Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party.
They finally recorded it with J.None for their 2017 holiday EP "Warm Up", and filmed a video to go with it that they released at Halloween of that year.
.
youtube
This bouncy tune is a great way to get an audience dancing in their seats, and VoicePlay alway performs it with gusto. Meet the guys, and hear a little of what they can do.
Details:
title: For Once In My Life
original performer: Stevie Wonder
written by: Ron Miller & Orlando Murden
arranged by: VoicePlay
performance date: 20 December 2015
My favorite bits:
Earl and Tony starting to step-touch together, then just giving in to the groove
everyone else cutting out for Eli's ♫ "won't desert me-e-e" ♫ riff then coming back in behind ♫ "I'm not alone anymore" ♫
everyone getting a moment in the spotlight for an introduction
those jazzy scatting lines leading into the key change
and a lovely ending chord
Trivia:
This song had been part of their live shows since their 4:2:Five days. The earliest clip I've found is from a performance in 2011 when their friend Jarrett Johnson subbed for Ryan.
.
youtube
Listening to this song is certainly a treat, but watching them perform it is at least half the fun. Sometimes friends being a little competitive makes them all better.
Details:
title: Elvira
original performers: The Oak Ridge Boys
written by: Dallas Frazier
arranged by: Geoff Castellucci
performance date: 20 December 2015
My favorite bits:
Tony startling Earl by skittering his fingertips down the back of his head
troublemaker Eli encouraging Earl to take center stage
that glorious pop timbre in Tony's solo
Geoff reclaiming the spotlight with that extra deep ♫ "mow mow" ♫
the "Earl can go low, too" gag is never not funny
the other guys' expectant expressions in the back during the tense final confrontation
and that big ending is always fantastic
Trivia:
This number was a longtime fan favorite staple in their live shows, including the 2015 Sing-Off tour.
Because the visual component of this performance is such an interaction with the audience, they have never filmed a video for it, but there is an audio recording available through their Patreon.
Geoff also helped arrange the version that their pals in Home Free recorded with The Oak Ridge Boys earlier in the year.
.
youtube
Anyone who grew up watching the Rankin-Bass stop-motion animated holiday specials knows these songs. But most people have never heard them quite like this.
Details:
title: Frosty the Snowman & Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
original songs / performers: "Frosty the Snowman" by Gene Autry; "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" by Eddie Cantor
written by: "Frosty the Snowman" by Walter "Jack" Rollins & Steve Nelson; "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" by J. Fred Coots & Haven Gillespie
arranged by: VoicePlay
performance date: 20 December 2015
My favorite bits:
Layne letting his inner kid out during the intro banter
Eli's smooth delivery on the opening lines
the harmonic stacking in ♫ "when they placed it on his head" ♫
those syncopated backing vocals during Earl's "Santa Claus" verse
Eli flailing in the back when the other guys start rapping
that crunchy ending section
Trivia:
The boys started performing this mashup during their 4:2:Five days. The earliest recording I've found is from their stint as castmembers in the Polar Express Conductors holiday show at SeaWorld in 2011. (Go hear Layne sing bass!)
It was a staple of VoicePlay's holiday shows for many years, particularly during their Disney World residencies for Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party.
They recorded a swingier version of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" with their friend Michael Andrew for their 2012 holiday album "Peppermint Winter".
.
youtube
It can be easy to overlook even the most talented vocal percussionist in an audio mix. Your ears forget that all those beats are coming out of a human body. But those skills are undeniable when he's the only one on stage.
Details:
title: Layne's drum solo
written & arranged by: Layne Stein
performance date: 20 December 2015
My favorite bits:
that initial deep kick
the random squawk
dropping into a half-time groove before transitioning into a more electronic section
♫ "Ding!" ♫
and the big finish
Trivia:
Percussion solos are a time honored tradition among modern a cappella groups. It can also be fun to hear beatboxers' differing styles when they team up as they did during the 2014 and 2015 Sing-Off tours.
When Layne started up again at the end, he was transitioning them into the start of "A Crimpella".
.
youtube
VoicePlay don't just have one crowd-pleasing medley of phonations. They've also got a holiday version. There really are a lot of unusual lyrics in Christmas carols, and these guys make them incredibly fun.
(I think I caught everything, but if I missed a song, please let me know so I can track it down and add it to the list.)
Details:
title: "Most of the Songs" holiday medley

Grossman, melody by Samuel E. Goldfarb; "Angels We Have Heard on High" English lyrics by James Chadwick, to the traditional French tune "Gloria" as arranged by Edward Shippen Barnes; "Up on the Housetop" by Benjamin Hanby; "Dominick the Donkey" by Ray Allen, Sam Saltzberg, & Wandra Merrell; "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" by Johnny Marks; "Jingle Bells" by James Lord Pierpont; "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky; "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" modern arrangement by Arthur Warrell
arranged by: VoicePlay
performance date: 20 December 2015
My favorite bits:
Tony's little salsa groove as the beat kicks in
the adorable swaying choreography during "Welcome Christmas"
some Hannukah representation for the two Jewish band members
Geoff's robust "ho ho ho" 🎅
Earl's wonderful braying for "Dominick the Donkey"
Eli's exaggerated air bass at the start of "Sugar Plum"
that final descending drum fill from Layne
Trivia:
This medley also dates back to their 4:2:Five era and the SeaWorld Polar Express Conductors show. (Go hear Geoff beatbox!)
It was a staple of VoicePlay's holiday shows for many years, particularly during their Disney World residencies for Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party.

Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog - Connection
On their 5th studio album, Connection, Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog have pushed their long-brewing tension between traditional pop songcraft and avantgarde improvisational music to the breaking point, bridging their customary genre-agnostic approach with elements of glam boogie, minimalist disco, psychedelic boogaloo, garage-punk-against-the-machine agitprop, and so much more. Recorded at Figure 8 Recording in Brooklyn, NY and mixed by Ben Greenberg (Danny Elfman, Depeche Mode, Lamb of God) the album sees Ribot – whose prodigious, impossible-to-categorize body of work as bandleader and musician spans no wave and jazz, Brazilian and Cuban music, roots and avant-garde and protest songs (often at the same time) alongside legendary collaborations with Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, The Lounge Lizards, John Zorn, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Caetano Veloso, and Laurie Anderson (to name but a few) – continuing to utilize Ceramic Dog as the vessel for his distinctive stream-of-consciousness songwriting, penning three out of the album’s four vocal tracks including the groove-infected “Ecstasy” (showcasing Anthony Coleman’s slinky Farfisa and longtime friend and associate Syd Straw behind the mic). From the anthemic manifesto “Soldiers in the Army of Love” to the unhinged ranting of “Heart Attack” and indescribable “No Name,” Ceramic Dog unleash a fury of complex time signatures, blues abstraction, and free-blowing energy to create their most unapologetically audacious collection thus far, their one-of-a-kind daring evidenced by the unlikely cover of Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz’s “That’s Entertainment,” written especially for the 1953 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer musical film The Band Wagon but here, in Ribot and Co’s hands, deconstructs Hollywood cliches while simultaneously winking at both the post-punk and post-Cultural Revolution iterations of the Gang of Four. Fueled by what Ribot calls “several bolts of creative lightning,” Connections stands as a vibrant, odd, and in many ways definitive milestone in what is truly a singular creative journey for Marc Ribot and Ceramic Dog, its zeitgeist-busting sound and vision not only affirming their place in the musical universe but raising the stakes for whatever comes next. CERAMIC DOG: Marc Ribot: guitars, tres (4), dobro (5), bass (2, 3, 9), vocals Shahzad Ismaily: bass, electronics, vocals Ches Smith: drums, percussion, electronics, vocals with SPECIAL GUESTS Syd Straw, vocals (4) Anthony Coleman, Farfisa (4, 8, 10) James Brandon Lewis, sax (5, 7) (appears courtesy of ANTI- Records) Greg Lewis, Hammond B3 organ (9) Oscar Noriega, clarinet (10) Peter Sachon, cello (6) Lyrics by Marc Ribot (Knockwurst Music, ASCAP) Music by Ceramic Dog (Knockwurst Music (ASCAP, Preposterous Bee (ASCAP), Wazir & Malika Music (BMI) Except “That’s Entertainment” by Arthur Schwartz/Howard Dietz (Chappell-Co Inc, ASCAP)
