Wild Neighbours

Neighbours, some are great, some are too noisy, and some of them need a little helping hand. The UKs wildlife population is under threat from habitat destruction, food competition, dangerous roads, climate change and multiple other threats.

But all is not lost, there are many different things we can do in our gardens that can help our wild neighbours thrive.

Hedgehogs

Mum and I have been feeding our regular hedgehog since April 2019. We feed him mostly meal worms, but if he’s lucky he gets a plate of tinned cat food. You can also feed them crushed up cat and dog biscuits (not fish based) or specialist hedgehog food you can buy from most pet stores, like Pets Corner or Pets at Home.

Other than being avid animal fans, we decided to start feeding Hodge because we wanted to help him thrive. Hedgehogs are moving further into urban areas largely to find more food, as the use of pesticides in farming are killing off the insects they’d normally eat. However, the urban environment imposes new risks. Cars, humans and the rest. Providing food reduces competition between and within species, meaning he doesn’t have to travel as far in his dangerous world to find food.

Hodge doesn’t live in our garden, as he frequents the front not back we didn’t like to encourage him settling by the road (not that we think he would anyway). However, if your hog is in the back, building a home is another great way to help him/her thrive.  

They can use it for rest, hibernation and if you’re truly lucky, for raising hoglets. The size of the garden doesn’t matter but positioning does. Hedgehogs, like us, don’t want to live in a hovel. They like their home out of direct sunlight with the entrance out of the wind, and somewhere quiet where they won’t be disturbed. Putting the house under bushes helps to meet these needs. Id also avoid putting the house at the bottom of any slopes so it doesn’t flood.

I have included a link to a youtube video I found with instructions on how to build a suitable hog house, but if you’re strapped for time you can also buy them from the RSPB website or Pets at Home.

My last tidbit on how to help our spikey friends is to ensure your garden is part of the hedgehog highway. Travelling up to 1 mile a night looking for food and mates, these guys are being forced out onto roads because they cant get past our garden fences. You can easily remedy this for by cutting holes in the bottom of your fence, or making sure existing holes are clear. This is a relatively simple process and can be done with a drill – according to Hedgehog Highstreet 13x13cm is a sufficient size for Hogs and too small for most pets to utilise.

These three simple actions can help increase our depleting hedgehog population and give you great joy doing it and not just that. If a hedgehog chooses your garden, your marigolds will be protected from slugs for the duration of his/her tenancy!

How to Build Healthier Habits

We all have bad habits; we’re human after all. But it is equally important not only to create healthy habits, but to build on those healthy habits so you stick with them. It’s a must for anyone hoping to stick to them in the longer term.

It’s easy to do things sporadically and then give up at the first hurdle, or even do them for a week or two before giving up altogether.

The suggestions below should help:

Find a way to remind yourself

Is there a way you can remind yourself of the habit you’re attempting to implement? For example, if you need to remember to take your vitamins, leave them out instead of putting them away. If you want to drink a pint of water as soon as you wake up in the morning, leave it by your bedside table. Get your gym outfit ready the night before too. Doing things that give you that gentle nudge will help with your reminder.

Put some time aside

The good news is, when you’re first trying to build habits, you don’t need to give up lots of your time. This is the case even if you want to build the habit of exercise and working out. Working out a few minutes every other day until you build the habit, can help make the habit stick. Eventually, you can continue to build up more time if you need it. Although it sounds unlikely, it really works.

Habits should be enjoyable

Habits should be enjoyable if you’re going to stick to them. Life shouldn’t feel like a chore. When it comes to exercise, choose an exercise that you enjoy, that way you’ll want to excel at. When you feel better through exercise, others benefit too, because you’ll be happier.

Making yourself aware of your environment

Your environment can dictate the way you act. We all need our home to be a relaxing retreat, but it can also be our biggest source of stress. Home should be our ‘calm place’. Consider your environments and what you associate them with, and then work out whether they could be hindering you in any way.

Make yourself accountable

Being accountable is a sign of a healthy mindset. Not to others, but to yourself. Whatever decisions you make, or whatever decisions you don’t make, if others are relying on you, you will be accountable.

Change your language

Language can impact state of mind and success. The way you talk about yourself as well as the habits you are attempting to implement will make a difference to whether you stick to them. Be positive, and make sure you know that these are things you get to do, not things you have to do. There is a big difference.

Conclusion

If you do something for long enough, it forms a habit. Good or bad, it will be part of who you are, part of your routine. It is easier to hang on to good habits and excel, than it easier to let go of bad ones.

Habits matter. When it comes to exercise, exercise matters, moderation around exercise matters more. Good habits are the foundations of a more rounded, balanced life and will always help us to continue to live healthier lives.
