Social media, such as snapchat, instagram and facebook, ahave face filters, some just give you a little touch up others just add a pair of bunny ears or anything simular. I think its cool and I do like it but sometimes the filters mess with your face when they were only supposed to put some stars on your face. I think they are ok but I wouldn't really make one.

I think this is a cool idea, the whole vibe of wearing sunglasses that read QR codes on hoodies and shirts so you can see the cool wings on someone. It makes avatar creation into a reality and I think it is pretty cool. But there can be issues with the practicality of it like how expensive it is or how most people are not doing this so someone will just be walking around with a barcode on it and i might be a waste of its potential. I watched this video a while ago of Safiya Niyagaared with digital clothing. It was only for social media though.

It was very interesting and informed me about editing clothing on people in videos. I feel like I could make a lot of really cool accessories and designs if i had the opportunity to make things like that. I think after a while it could be something people could do naturally and use normally.

AR can also be used to make filters for certain areas something called GEOAR which means you only have access to certain filers in certain areas. The stranger things one is pretty cool and I believe it is quite true to the show. But I do feel as if maybe the little mini guy looks less where it is supposed to be. It looks like a png.

I myself probably wouldn't use these filters as they aren't very interesting to me. It isn't my thing to take a photo of myself for everyone to see but I appreciate the effort put into the flower faced guy when it came to modelling and colouring it.

Rewatching BOOM

Boom is what passes for a “filler episode” in S4.

Yet it wraps up most of the Inhumans/Watchdogs stuff - if unsatisfactorily: Nadeer’s death can only inflame the anti-Inhuman sentiments yet that won’t even be part of the backdrop past this season, ever again - explores Mace trying to find a new role for himself and settling on self-sacrificing hero (because we didn’t have enough of those already😁) and propels forward both the LMD and the Framework arcs, with Mace’s kidnapping and Agnes’ story respectively.

So, yeah. AoS doesn’t really do “fillers” and S4? Even less.

Once Upon a Time, the Bus Kids:

FitzSkimmons investigate the bombing together, each to their own strengths - Fitz and Simmons with chemistry, Daisy with surveillance cameras - and then need almost no words to agree on how to (try to) stop Shockley from going kaboom. It’s a lovely little scene that underscores how much the show has lost when it destroyed their friendship.

She’s Got the Powers:

Daisy tries and fails to generate a “countervibration” to keep Shockley solid but the show succeeds at writing around her powers without ignoring neither the obvious nor the previously established, dedicating two scenes to explain how they could save the day and why they won’t. *waves at S6* See? Time for another dumb retrospective of stuff I used to own! This time: cell phones. This is mostly for my own benefit because every now and then I wonder what they used to look like.

This was my first cell phone, as far as I can tell? A Qualcomm QCP-2760 probably. It looked like this but silver. Long and large by today’s standards, definitely made more for talking than browsing the internet, though it could do that too, sort of. You could check movie times and visit certain specially-designed mobile sites, anyway. Great use of 4 lines of text. IIRC when I got a new one this was donated to a women’s shelter, at least according to the store.

This wasn’t technically a phone, at least without an accessory that plugged into the back, but it fulfilled a lot of the same functions of a modern smartphone. A Handspring Visor Neo (Blue) running Palm OS. I actually still have this and it still works, but it uses AAA batteries & is hopelessly outdated so I don’t use it. I used to type fanfic on it by rapidly tapping the on-screen keyboard with the stylus. Even though I also have a really nice folding full-size keyboard for it. It also capably ran free Gameboy-esque games like Tetris and LoZ clones, which had to be transferred on by USB. Because I have ADHD and find using a planner almost impossible, the calendar/alarm functions were absolute lifesavers.

At the time I got the Samsung SPH-N400, camera phones were popular but out of my price range. At least this one had a colour screen! I liked this one for its unique shape. Flip phones were already common but most had the screen in the flip part, and I was worried the cables would wear. The guy at the phone store was horribly offended when I told him I wanted a bigger phone so it wouldn’t get lost in my bag. It wasn’t THAT big and the antenna was fun to fidget with. This had sufficient calendar capabilities that I stopped carrying the Visor. I had the X-Men cartoon theme song as a ringtone and eventually gave this one to a friend & she used it for several more years with the same ringtone.

Finally got a camera phone! It was called the LG Lotus in most of the world but something else here in Canada; I forget what. I really like phones that look a little different. This one was easy to use, had a nice little texting keyboard, media controls on the front, and just absolutely garbage firmware. Loved the hardware but... Well, one time there was a firmware update and the 1/W button stopped working for several months. Just try living without the number 1 or letter W. Other problems kept cropping up to the point where it froze frequently and became unusable. I just recycled this one a few weeks ago but haven’t used it in years.

Lil baby Android LG Optimus Net. A capable and tough little phone that lasted me 6 years. Its only real drawback was the lack of internal storage, meaning lack of space for apps. Still works but so outdated that it has trouble with the Play store and stuff, so I had to upgrade. I’ve been keeping it around as a media player.

So, I don’t know if you know this, but most cell phones have an FM radio built in but it’s disabled. This drove me crazy, so 2 years ago I went hunting for one with a functioning radio. I found a few import options but settled on the Doogee Mix. It’s a pretty powerful budget phone, except the camera is awful and the internal speakers are incredibly weak. It’s got a pretty glass body and big screen that makes it seem fancier than it is. It’s heavy as heck. Unlike the previous, it’s capable of running Pokemon Go. And that’s the main thing.

Anyway I was wondering how long I keep my phones for and it looks like, excluding the Visor, I’m averaging about 4 years each.

Technology and Society - VR, AR, AND MR

In this blog I will be looking at answering the question: could new age technology such as AR, VR AND MR, possibly cause a shift in our society and culture? Looking at theories of technological determinism (TD), focusing on its assumptions about how a societies social structure and cultural values are determined by its technology advances. Also, looking at the work of Jean Baudrillard and his theory on hyperreality, and his 1981 book simulacra and simulation, also looking at how the new technologies listed above can let us transcend our perceived realty into anther that lets us live in a simulated world? I will be focusing on the AR game Pokémon Go as my case study, but I will also be making references to other games through the blog.

Technological Determinism (TD)

Technological determinism, a term first coined by ‘Thorstein Velben’ in 1920, is according to ‘Ferrante’ is a reductionist theory that presumes a society’s technology drives the development of it’s social and cultural values (Fung, 2017). This theory aims to provide a link between the nature of society and technology. It attempts to give an explanation as to whom or what could have a controlling power to cause a cultural change, by questioning to which degree human thought or action is influenced by technological factors. However, there are many different versions of the (TD), In the book, ‘Does technology drive History?’, the ideas of technological determinism takes many forms, Ranging from ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ extremes (1994). In his book, Autonomous Technology, Langdon Winner states, “changes in technology are the single most important basis of change in society” (1977), he argues the core assumptions of the theory is that technology forms the basis of social life. With the development of the virtual reality game technology; could it cause a major societal shift in the new age of technology unlike we’ve seen before?

Augmented reality (AR), Virtual reality (VR) and Mixed reality (MR)

Augmented reality adds digital elements to the person’s actual environment often by using the camera on a smartphone. Examples of this would be the use of filters on apps such as snapchat, Instagram, and the most popular, Pokémon Go.

Virtual reality is the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment (Bardi, 2019). The first instance of virtual reality was the panoramic paintings, that were made to create the illusion of being somewhere you are actual not. Exhibitions in museums of world war one, for example, to help to get a better experience. In the 1930s the idea of virtual reality was still only being thought of, science fiction writer Stanley G. Weinbaum, had the idea of goggles that would let the wearer experience a fictional world right in front of them. And today we have the Google glasses, which although doesn’t let us use whole new worlds, it still lets us see things that are not really there. ‘The Sensorama’ was invented by cinematographer Morton Heilig, it was an arcade-style theatre cabinet. A person could sit on the chair and be completely immersed into the film playing in front of them. It featured stereo speakers, a stereoscopic 3d display, fans, smell generators and a vibrating chair. Heilig’s next invention was the Telesphere mask in 1960, but it didn’t have motion tracking. However, motion tracking was added a year later, by two Philco Corporation engineers Comeau & Bryan. In 1995 Ivan Sutherland suggested HMD into the world of virtual reality, which he described as “ultimate display”. He wanted something that would give the ability to interact with objects in the virtual world in a realistic way. The first headset was released by SEGA, The Sega VR headset in 1993. At the time selling for $332. But as the idea of VR was still brand new, the release was flop, not selling as intended by Sega.

And then VR as we know it...

To experience AR all you need is your apple or Samsung smart phone, but VR you will need a headset. These headsets go from £30 to £500, depending on the quality and what customers are looking for.

The history of Pokémon-

Satoshi Tajin was the owner of the ‘Game freaky’ magazine. Himself and his co-worker and friend, Ken Sugimori (the illustrator of ‘Game freaky’ decided to make their own video games, as they thought all the other video games at the time were boring or bad. So, on April 26th 1989, the magazine turned to an official game development company. The company went on the create successful games: Yoshi for the NES, Mario and Wario for the Super Famicom, and Postman for SEGA (Bates).

On Nov 27th 1996 came the release of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green for the Nintendo GameBoy. Pokémon was a game in which players take the role of the protagonist number 721, they set out on adventures to collect and train creatures known as Pocket monsters - (hence the name Pokémon). With the ultimate aim of the game being to defeat 8 Pokémon gym leaders, stop and evil corporation and battle your way to becoming the best. But that what made it such a fun game, the end all aim for players was to collect all 151 Pokémon. However, not all Pokémon were in one place, you had to search for them across the growing world of Pokémon. The Game Boy allowed players to link cables and have battles against one another and trade Pokémon. This opened the door for even better adventures with your friends. The game become very popular, making millions in Japan. Causing the campany make re-releases limited edition Pokémon. The game didn’t get a world wide release until September 28th 1998, Pokémon Red and Blue, in America. And when it was released worldwide, it become a worldwide phenomenon, following were successful releases of Pokémon anime series, Manga, trading cards and games. The sequel, Pokémon 2: Gold and silver come out on the 21st 1999 in Japan and later in the US October 16th 2000. And has since had many other sequels.

Pokémon anime-

The first episode aired on 1 April 1997 in Japan, not being broadcasted in the US until September 1998. It was a success and has been running ever since. On season 1 episode 38 episode, ‘Electric Soldier Porygon’ viewers started to complain after an explosion on the episode. The explosion was extremely bright with intense lights flashing blue and red rapidly, it caused children to “experienced blurred vision. Others felt dizzy, or nauseous. In extreme cases, some even experienced seizures and cases of temporary blindness”(Plunkette, 2015) although it didn’t last very long. it had effects on a total of 700 viewers, who were rushed to the hospital. That episode has never been shown again. This incident holds the Guinness world record for Most Photosensitive Epileptic Seizures Caused by a TV Show. (Flint, 2015)

On July 6th, 2016 the mobile app game Pokémon Go was released, available for download on iOS and Android devices, and was an instant hit. Becoming the most revenue grossed by a mobile game in its first month with $206.5 Million. (Marasigan, 2016) . Players can create an avatar, who is then placed on a map according to the players geographical location. Players can then move around collecting Pokémon as their location has been transformed into the world of Pokémon, with places like ‘PokéStops’ and ‘Pokémon gyms’ which were now battle locations for players, this is all possible with the app’s AR feature. The players can see, and hear the Pokémon as they catch em’, bringing it to life, providing an experience like never before. Players can like feel like Ash when they play. That’s what made it so popular, it seemed like everyone was playing Pokémon Go, didn’t matter what age, background, or location, at the parks, gyms, or schools, “millions of people roaming around the physical world to capture virtual characters” (KnowledgeWharton high School, 2016). Pokémon Go was about the experience. Although, we had experienced AR in the form of snap chat/ Instagram fillers, this was the first time it was presented to us in this form. A big technology such as AR being so accessible, at any point we could take out our phones and transport to another world, another simulation but still within ours.

Some computer or laptop doesn’t have the option named “UEFI Firmware Settings”. In that situation, you can try the following ways to enable VT-x.

Method 1

Click to restart in advance option, when the screen black clicks the dedicated key such as F2, F10, F11 or F12 repeatedly, you will directly enter into BIOS setup. Then follow the guidelines mentioned above.

In some other system use fn + f1 or fn+ f2. This only works not well for all system. Then follow the guidelines mentioned above.

Method 2

In hp systems or in some other system, follow the steps given below

Restart your system

When your system reboots, you can see the black screen spotting “press Esc for settings”.

find the uninstall key of emulator software you want to delete, the names will appear on the right side of the screen. Right click and choose the export option to backup.

This backup will be used to restore the registry as same as before if you deleted the wrong key or did anything fault.

Steps To Delete The Software Are

Initially, Go to start->> RUN ->> type Regedit and enter OK to open a registry.

The registry will open, you can see the setting tree on left side of the window and there you can locate the uninstall key for your emulator software.

Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE softwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUninstall

Inside the uninstall folder, you can see a lot of uninstalling keys belongs to different programs or software installed on your PC. When you click one, the description for that key will appear on the right-hand side of the window. There you can find DisplayName that indicates the name of the program or software such as Andyroid to the user. There you can find the name of the emulator software you search.

Find the uninstall key of Andyroid emulator or any other software you want to delete from your computer, after finding the key take backup by right click and click export.

After taking a backup, delete the key of the emulator. Now your emulator program won’t appear on the Add/Remove programming list or uninstall a program list.

If you want to add the files again on your computer, then click the backup file and a dialog box will appear to click ok and again click ok to restore the data. After restoring the backup, you will see the programs in add/remove list or uninstall a program list.

Some programs create new entries in the registry to store their configuration options details, search those files and delete files belong to the emulator software. They may be found in the following path options such as

HKEY_CURRENT_USERsoftware,HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEsoftware,HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControSetServices.

Personal journal, retrospective at 2000s

Here's a personal journal I wanted to share here.

Some of these stuff may put you off. So, it's just a warning here.

2004 (11 years old)

In Argentina, I used to watch some anime cartoons on TV in a limited time after an anime channel was no longer aired in a few years later.

I used to fall in love with Saber Marionette J and its series about the three android girls fall in love with a guy named Otaru. I guess the idea of a female android was a stunning idea to see it and I still like it when I try to recall some scenes of it.

There was enough entertainment I couldn't choose which one fitted for me. I chose the internet. The internet speed was dial-up connection so the telephone of my house was cut out.

I used to watch a bunch of parody cartoons (like The Matrix and some parody classic games we've seen), and some strange flash animations on Newgrounds.com. That website was my real enjoyment before YouTube.

At a younger age, I wasn't able to watch some interesting movies in the cinema like David Lynch ones were rated as R. So, fuck me, I used to watch Looney Tunes Back in Action. That one was fun, I think.

But for a strange reason, a movie channel was airing Austin Powers movies, there were a few James Bond ones, Toy Story 1 and 2, Fast and Furious, Casper, The Blair Witch Project and some other ones that they weren't motivated me, but I realized how the camera position of each scene was placed on those movies, so those moments were memorable in a way.

I also watched some channels that one was talking about animals, the other one was airing a scifi cartoon, geeez, I wish I could've watched Farscape than the Power Rangers. xP

I still remember watching some japanese cartoons called Pokemon and Digimon. Those were really enjoyable ones.

2006 (13 years old)

I cannot forget at that year masturbation was the first time I did and ejaculated somewhere. Pornography was an interesting idea I used to watch some sex scenes were pleasant and others were violent in a strange way and motivated me to masturbate it.

Music-wise, a few bands or musicians I liked were LCD Soundsystem, The Prodigy, Goldfrapp and Nine Inch Nails. On the other hand, I thought The Backstreet Boys sucked, well, they're not my thing. Eminem? Disturbed? Avenged Sevenfold? Wolfmother? Fall Out Boy? I used to listen to them or I've seen a couple of music videos of those bands on MTV or MuchMusic for a short time.

The movies haven't changed my taste, they seemed very common of what the heck is happening around us and the problems we encounter?, in the metropolitan city from what I lived. Terrorism is one thing, or in USA, there was a horror war against on Iraq or a guy named Osaba Bin Laden. Really? The US companies want oil or something they need over there. A sad reality of what has happened there.

I still remember I could catch on some new animes that the stories didn't motivate my projects. I knew there was something I always wanted to see a new story, like to have love of the characters or something like that, a Beauty and the Beast-ish.

Thinking at that year, I could've made a silly animation about a romantic story on newgrounds, but I had a crappy computer and I didn't know how to do it at that time.

2007

I realized after watching a bunch of parody movies and parody cartoons are utterly horrible and laughable that I said to myself "Okay, how long do these parody movies will last?"

Science fiction wasn't a big thing in my life. My preference of movies were a mess when movies and stories came up to it, I believe. 2008

In 2008, I watched a Pixar movie called WALL-E and that was amazing to me. It's still an influential movie to me.

Shamefully, no one has recommended to watch Blade Runner or some interesting tv series to know them. I was kinda isolated.

Looking back, there were some interesting movies (and some older movies, too) I loved such as The Truman Show, Spielberg's Artificial Intelligence, Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale's Beauty and the Beast, Barton Fink, Frank Darabont's The Shawshank Redemption, Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, The Iron Giant and Atlantis The Lost Empire (The Matrix is not named here. Sorry, folks).

I'm probably going to write a new journal about newgrounds' cartoons I've seen. Maybe...

When you buy a Laptop or Notebook, for that current operating system which came pre-installed in it, shall never face any drivers issues, as those have been identified and optimized by OEM’s itself. But the real problem starts when you upgrade your laptop to latest operating system and then invites the issues of missing drivers of various components of your Laptop/Notebook. So, in this article, i have gathered a big list with Download links of all “Unknown Devices” i have seen on Internet.

How to find “Device ID” of Unknown Devices in Device Manager

Right click on “This PC” or “My Computer” icon and select Manage and then “Device Manager“.

Locate those components which are being shown as “Unknown Device” with a Yellow Exclamation or Question Mark.

Right click on those devices and select “Properties“.

In Properties, go to “Details” Tab.

In Details tab, locate “Hardware ID” (3rd option) from dropdown list.

A sub-menu would open, with a couple of sentences you need to check.

Those device ID’s should look like similar as above or below for Unknown Devices:

Device ID can be single line, or even 2 or of 3 lines. But notable thing is every detail of “Device ID” would have VEN and DEV in it. If it’s not, then keep looking, until you locate details similar as above.

Getting Started with React Native

With the ever-increasing popularity of smartphones, developers are looking into solutions for building mobile applications. For developers with a web background, frameworks such as Cordova and Ionic, React Native, NativeScript, and Flutter allow us to create mobile apps with languages we’re already familiar with: HTML, XML, CSS, and JavaScript.

In this guide, we’ll take a closer look at React Native. You’ll learn the absolute basics of getting started with it. Specifically, we’ll cover the following:

what React Native is

what Expo is

how to set up an React Native development environment using Expo

how to create an app with React Native

Prerequisites

This tutorial assumes that you’re coming from a web development background. The minimum requirement for you to be able to confidently follow this tutorial is to know HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. You should also know how to install software on your operating system and work with the command line. We’ll also be using some ES6 syntax, so it would help if you know basic ES6 syntax as well. Knowledge of React is helpful but not required.

What is React Native?

React Native is a framework for building apps that work on both Android and iOS. It allows you to create real native apps using JavaScript and React. This differs from frameworks like Cordova, where you use HTML to build the UI, which will then just be displayed within the device’s integrated mobile browser (WebView). React Native has built-in components which are compiled to native UI components, while your JavaScript code is executed through a virtual machine. This makes React Native more performant than Cordova.

Another advantage of React Native is its ability to access native device features. There are many plugins which you can use to access native device features, such as the camera and various device sensors. If you’re in need of a platform-specific feature that hasn’t been implemented yet, you can also build your own native modules — although that will require you to have considerable knowledge of the native platform you want to support (Java or Kotlin for Android, and Objective C or Swift for iOS).

If you’re coming here and you’re new to React, you might be wondering what it is. React is a JavaScript library for the Web for building user interfaces. If you’re familiar with MVC, it’s basically the View in MVC. React’s main purpose is to allow developers to build reusable UI components. Examples of these components include buttons, sliders, and cards. React Native took the idea of building reusable UI components and brought it into mobile app development.

What is Expo?

Before coming here, you might have heard of Expo. It’s even mentioned in the official React Native docs, so you might be wondering what it is.

In simple terms, Expo allows you to build React Native apps without the initial headache that comes with setting up your development environment. It only requires you to have Node installed on your machine, and the Expo client app on your device or emulator.

But that’s just how Expo is initially sold. In reality, it’s much more than that. Expo is actually a platform that gives you access to tools, libraries and services for building Android and iOS apps faster with React Native. Expo comes with an SDK which includes most of the APIs you can ask for in a mobile app development platform:

Those are just few of the APIs you get access to out of the box if you start building React Native apps with Expo. Of course, these APIs are available to you as well via native modules if you develop your app using the standard React Native setup.

Plain React Native or Expo?

The real question is which one to pick — plain React Native or Expo? There’s really no right or wrong answer. It all depends on the context and what your needs are. But I guess it’s safe to assume that you’re reading this tutorial because you want to quickly get started with React Native. So I’ll go ahead and recommend that you start out with Expo. It’s fast, simple, and easy to set up. You can dive right into tinkering with React Native code and get a feel of what it has to offer in just a couple of hours.

But as you begin to grasp the different concepts, and as the need for different native features arises, you might find that Expo is kind of limiting. Yes, it has a lot of native features available, but not all the native modules that are available to standard React Native projects are supported.

Note: projects like unimodules are beginning to close the gap between standard React Native projects and Expo projects, as it allows developers to create native modules that work for both React Native and ExpoKit.

Setting Up the React Native Development Environment

To quickly get started with React Native, the recommended method is to set up Expo.

The only prerequisite of setting up Expo is that you need to have Node.js installed in your machine. To do this, you can either head to the official Node download page and grab the relevant binaries for your system, or you can use a version manager, which allows you to install multiple versions of Node and switch between them at will.

Once you have Node.js installed, install the Expo CLI. This is used for creating, serving, packaging, and publishing projects:

npm install -g expo-cli

Next, install Yarn, the preferred package manager for Expo:

npm install -g yarn

That’s really all there is to it! The next step is to download the Expo client App for Android or iOS. Note that this is the only way you can run Expo apps while you’re still in development. When you’re ready to ship the app, you can follow this guide to create standalone binaries for iOS and Android which can be submitted to the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

What We’ll Be Building

Now that your development environment is set up, we can look at the app we’re going to create — a Pokémon search app. It will allow the user to type the name of a Pokémon into an input box, before fetching the Pokémon’s details from an external API and displaying them to the user.

Bootstrapping the App

On your terminal, execute the following command to create a new React Native project using Expo:

expo init RNPokeSearch

Under Managed Workflow, select blank. By default, this will install the dependencies using Yarn.

You might be asking what this Managed workflow and Bare workflow is. These are the two types of workflows that Expo supports. With a managed workflow, you only have to deal with JavaScript and Expo manages everything for you. While in Bare workflow, you have full control over the native code. It gives you the same freedom as the React Native CLI, but with the added bonus of Expo’s libraries and services. You can visit this managed vs bare intro page if you want to learn more about workflows in Expo.

Just like in a web environment, you can install libraries to easily implement different kinds of functionality in React Native. Once the project is created, we need to install a couple of dependencies: pokemon and axios. The former is used for verifying if the text entered in the search box is a real Pokémon name, while axios is used to make an HTTP request to the API that we’re using, namely the PokeAPI:

yarn add pokemon axios

React Native Project Directory Structure

Before we proceed to coding, let’s first take a look at the directory structure of a React Native project created with Expo:

Here’s a breakdown of the most important files and folders that you need to remember:

App.js: the main project file. This is where you’ll start developing your app. Any changes you make to this file will be reflected on the screen.

src: acts as the main folder which stores all the source code related to the app itself. Note that this isn’t included in the default project created by Expo CLI. The name of this folder can be anything. Some people use app as well.

assets: this is where the app assets such as icons and splash screens are stored.

package.json: where the name and versions of the libraries you installed for this project are added.

node_modules: where the libraries you installed are stored. Note that this already contains a lot of folders before you installed the two libraries earlier. This is because React Native also has its own dependencies. The same is true for all the other libraries you install.

Don’t mind the rest of the folders and files for now, as we won’t be needing them when just getting started.

Running the App

At this point, you can now run the app by executing the command below. Make sure that you’ve already installed the corresponding Expo client (Android or iOS) for your phone and that it’s connected to the same network as your computer before doing so. If you don’t have an Android or iOS device you can test with, you can use the Android Studio Emulator or the iOS simulator so you can run the app on your machine:

yarn start

Once it’s running, it will display a QR code:

Open your Expo client app, and in the projects tab click on Scan QR Code. This will open the app on your Android or iOS device. If you have an emulator running, you can either press i to run it on the iOS simulator or a to run it on the Android emulator.

If you’re testing on a real device, shake it so the developer menu will show up.

Make sure that Fast Refresh is enabled. This allows you to automatically reload the changes that you make on your components.

2017 in review

I always say that I’m going to post a “how my year was” at the end of the year, but I have an awful memory so I never remember what happened in each month. This year, I tried to post about each month as it finished- the good and the bad. Under a cut because of course it got long, and I never seem to post about my real life, so this may be boring if you don’t actually know me.

January

Got a snow day after having students for just one day

Accidentially read a book in one night (Perfect) because of aforementioned snow day/borrowing it electronically from the library/not knowing how many pages there were (not that many since it’s YA)

Got two more snow/ice days because my county has mountains in it and we’re in the South, so we’re not prepared for winter

Saw Hidden Figures and cried about how good humanity can be when we actually allow and encourage all people to be their best (black women!!!! they did that!!!!!!!)

Helped my students navigate our county’s program of going one-to-one with Chromebooks (there were many good things, such as getting my kids to play freerice for extra credit; there were many bad things, such as a quiz getting screwed up because I shuffled the questions but had asked my co-teacher to help me by reading the quiz [as she normally does] to a half dozen students...who all had a different order of questions...).

Went to a conference for new teachers and while a lot of the information was repetitive, there were a few things I got from it (such as 6.5 professional development hours aw yis).

Got to see lots of family I don’t usually see on this weekend!

Started reading The Diary of Anne Frank with my students because this country allowed fascism to be A Thing™ and I’m going to resist however I can.

Got two (!!!!!!) days off at the end of January for sick days (apparently other students in the county? not us but we benefitted!!!!)

February

Finally had an entire 5-day week of school

Then got another two days off for sickness (8th grade was doing our part by asking ENTIRE classes “Hey! Anyone feel sick? Anyone want to go get their temp checked???”)

Went to an open house at a local mosque, and y’all, I live in The South™ but their parking lot filled up a good 15 minutes before the event even started and there was an overflow room and so much support for this community during the Muslim Ban and it just filled my heart with joy

Got a haircut (it was literally down to my butt y’all!!!!) and now it’s right below my shoulders

Had pedal extensions installed in my car because I’m 4′9 and would have literally died if the airbags went off.

March

Got my professional teaching license! I’m no longer an apprentice! I don’t have to have 4 observations a year!!! Only 2! And while I’m REALLY good at playing the observation game (and am MUCH better at this than the testing game), it will be nice to not think about it so much.

My mom came to stay for a few days because it was her and my sister’s spring break.

During that week, I had a LONG 4 day week, which included staying at my school until 7:30 for a town hall meeting/carnival/extravaganza. F U N.

My spring break was purposefully low-key. I rested a lot, read books, caught up on Netflix, shopped at Old Navy, and went to the local art museum for the first time (I’ve only been in this city for 8 years...)

April

I found that I actually enjoy teaching how to write an essay. The 5 paragraph essay, while it has many faults, is a really good place for beginning writers (which 8th graders are) to begin. I had a student tell me that she liked how I made each sentence have a specific purpose because she was able to plug in her evidence and thoughts more easily- this honestly made my whole day.

That being said, I HATE teaching essays when students are absent. Trying to get them caught up and keep everyone else on track is SO MUCH WORK. Especially when the absent students don’t come to me during my plan to make up their work...

For two whole days, my last period class was not allowed to use erasers because some people (two boys, as it turned out) were shredding and throwing them at each other.

I turned 26

The Welcome to Night Vale Live Show FINALLY TRAVELED TO TENNESSEE AND Y’ALL CECIL (REAL CECIL NOT THE CHARACTER) IS FROM KNOXVILLE!!!! The weather singer was super fun (she played Rocky Top and we ate that shit up like biscuits and gravy with no shame whatsoever) and the show itself was just so much fun even though I went alone. It was almost an hour of normal segments with the plot of the glow cloud, but they also brought in Steve Carlsburg and Tamika Flynn (I diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiied when she walked on stage because I majorly crush on that actress whoops) and watching those actors interact on stage was so much fun.

End of the school year is always chaotic and better left forgotten tbh

We took the 8th graders to the local theme park, and it was really good (though my expectations were super low because last year’s trip SUCKED). The weather looked like it might rain, but it was nice all day, the kids were pretty good, and the rides were fun.

There were some really sad community deaths around this time :(

The teacher who normally MCs the 8th grade commencement is now an administrator, so while we still had him open the ceremony, I gave out several of the awards, and I don’t think I did a bad job (two of the other teachers hate public speaking and the last one was new to the team this year, so I was really the only choice).

June

Worked my church’s festival, which is always fun. The crowds are never what they ought to be (due to a combination of rain threats and poor marketing), so a lot of people missed out on some really great food and music.

Great music included a new band- Southern Avenue- that I got to see again later in the year.

I had to miss the third day of the festival because of a friend’s baby shower. I knew a few people (besides the couple), but they left early; luckily, the people throwing it were a lot of fun. We played games (don’t get caught saying “baby”; pin the sperm on the egg; etc) and decorated diapers/onesies/bibs for the baby). The next day, we went to church (IN A MOTHERFUCKING MONSOON) and for Mexican food.

Started my reread of Harry Potter (it had been about 5 years since I’d last read the series). I cried in almost every book, and not always at sad parts. I’ve become very protective of Harry as I’ve gotten older.

My younger brother found an NES, which was the console I grew up with and my parents gave away years ago. They really loved to play on it, so this was a wedding anniversary present for them. The Legend of Zelda is the shit.

July

I finally got a new phone (I’d had mine about 3 years, and it died in May) and I know it’s fun for iphone users to shit on Android users, but I really do love the camera quality on my Samsung.

Went with some of my best friends to visit another one of our best friends who lives in the middle of fucking nowhere and had adventures including, but not limited to: getting pizza because we were too weak to change out the gas’s grill, waiting 5ever for food at dinner, and watching the entire Flowers in the Attic series.

School started back up, and at the kick-off for all the teachers, I won $500 in a drawing of all the people who hadn’t used a sick day last year!!!!!

And I didn’t even realize that I’d won $200 at the previous school board meeting in the same type drawing!!!!

New class started off with 85 students. It was a DREAM to be able to focus on individuals and not just herd cats.

I actually felt more confident in the classroom with my early units (poetry & our whole class novel).

September

Still felt confident in the classroom!

I got my testing scores back from the previous year (this shit takes 5ever and it’s dumb) and did better in about the only way I could have, so that was good to see.

I had about 10 county people in my classroom (principals, academic coaches, etc) to see a certain style of teaching ELA that the county is working on. It’s basically making sure that teachers keep students engaged in complex text (which is what I do almost every day anyway) and I had been to two of these trainings already, so I knew what sort of lesson worked. Well...they LOVED it!!! The kids were in small groups and did SO GOOD discussing evidence/answering questions (they all got candy afterwards) and I got some good feedback about how I talk to my students. Then that same day the superintendent came in my room (one of several rooms he visited while doing his yearly observation on the principal). That visit was super unannounced, but still fine.

The academic coach got rid of my classroom’s desks and found tables and chairs instead!!!! My classroom is tiny and weird shaped, so this works SO MUCH BETTER.

I help coach volleyball (aka I keep the books) and the girls won district (beating out a team with a redneck grandma in the stands who literally came up to our girls and yelled at them for cheering on their own damn team in the previous game). They didn’t do so well at sectionals, but that’s ok.

Holy shit I won another $200 in that drawing!!! And this time my parents let me buy them plane tickets so we could see family over Christmas.

Got to see a lot of family at my cousin’s ‘wedding party’ (he got married last year in Europe since he met his now wife over there, and wanted to have a family party here). I learned that my uncle and his son dance exactly the same at the same level of alcohol.

November

I should have known something was up when my first 9 weeks went so well. Apparently my county is in the bottom tier for the state, and now everyone is freaking out (never mind that the data to support this was mONTHS LATE AND BASED ON STANDARDIZED TESTS WHICH WERE A CLUSTERFUCK TO BEGIN WITH) so there was a lot of school stress during this time.

Nice things though- got to see friends when their baby was baptized and went home for Thanksgiving, where my dad came into the Catholic Church.

I organized most of the 8th grade field trip for the semester- going to see “A Christmas Carol” put on by my old college’s theatre. I was stressed the entire time because if something went wrong it would be on ME, but it was absolutely wonderful and I cried which honestly surprised me. We went to the local mall for our lunch and it was good to see the kids just relax. It was a great field trip and several people including the principal thanked me for my hard work which felt great after a hard month.

December

School was nothing but survival mode per usual.

Hosted the Christmas party for my friend group at church and it was a lot of fun.

The actual break was fast- we flew to Texas with one of my mom’s sisters and her family to visit their brother and his family. I hadn’t been to Texas since high school, so it was fun to explore and eat good food.

My final count for books was 93 (67 new and 26 reread) (I’m trying to finish an audiobook I’m borrowing from the library but I still have 80 minutes left and literally 4 hours to finish it so we’ll see!!!).

Creating the Worlds First Virtual Arms Dealing Trade in Reality Clash

Cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin has been a hot topic in 2017. Fortune stated that the cryptocurrency’s market value is now more than $150 Billion (USD). It should therefore come as no surprise that videogames are starting to use cryptocurrency in-game to purchase exclusive skins and weapons. VRFocus speak to Tony Pearce, the co-founder of Reality Gaming Group about how they’ve created Reality Clash, the first augmented reality (AR) videogame that uses cryptocurrency in the hope to make users into virtual arms dealers.

Reality Clash is a first-person shooter (FPS) that allows users to play, compete and join tournaments through their mobile phones. Reality Clash will be downloadable for free next year starting in the UK for both iPhone and Android. Players will be able to map out a three-to-five mile radii in the city or countryside, join teams or tournaments and fight. At this time the title is far from finished, but it will be released as a minimal viable product (MVP) in the UK early next year for two to three months in order to do focus testing and get feedback. After which it will then get a full release towards the end of 2018. With twenty-five years of videogame industry experience, Pearce boasts that these developers are the best in the world. With the developers all coming from large companies that have all been experimenting with virtual reality (VR) from the very beginning; Oculus, PlayStation VR, Hive and some are award-winning BAFTA developers. He believes that they’ve joined Reality Clash because they believe in the concept of AR, FPS and cryptocurrency. Pearce also notes that FPS is the biggest genre of videogames out there. Pearce describes Reality Clash as the combination between Pokemon Go and Call of Duty. With the success of Pokemon Go, Reality Clash are even more confident and excited about their videogame. Unlike AR FPS Father.IO, Reality Clash does not need additional accessories.

“What we didn’t want to have was too many attachments hence why, what we’ve created now is really quite unique, to be able to play this type of game without having to attach something to the phone, just using the phone’s camera and just using the technology we built around augmented reality. This is ground-breaking stuff. It really is ground breaking.”

What makes Reality Clash so interesting is that they chose to get their funding for Reality Clash by doing an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) in August this year. This is where a company offers virtual coins in exchange for real money such as American Dollars. In this case Reality Clash sold their cryptocurrency named ‘Reality Clash Gold Coin’ and also allowed those who bought their currency to get access to exclusive weapons, guns and gameplay. Pearce explains that they wanted to get the crowd, the gamers and the cryptocurrency enthusiasts. For a period of four weeks during which Reality Clash opened their ICO, they managed to raise 9,000 in Ether (Ether is a type of cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin) with 1,400 investors.

The ICO is now closed and the Reality Clash Gold Coins cannot be bought anymore. Instead you are now able to buy ‘Reality Clash Silver coins’ (RCC) which allow players to exchange £1 for one RCC. The RCC however does not give the buy access to exclusive guns, gameplay or skins. The user will have to pay more RCC to purchase a gun that can only be bought with Reality Clash Gold Coins. These weapons and skins that are exclusive to the Reality Clash Gold Coins are so exclusive that only 10, 100 or 500 will ever be made. In order to purchase one of the exclusive weapons one will have to trade in Reality Clash’s online armoury and thus the virtual arm dealing trade is born.

He says that in games such as World of Warcraft skins and weapons are how the company is making the majority of its money now with swords going for $5,000 (USD)/£10,000 (GBP).
