When homeschooling gets tough and it seems like your kids don't want to learn. . . . #homeschool101 #homeschool #learning #reluctantlearners #randomnestfamily #parenting #convention #education
It’s not even the end of a very long day and already you hear the dreaded, “I’m sick of homeschool! Why can’t I go to public school?” “Where did this come from?” You think, we’ve been homeschooling for years now. Or maybe, you just started homeschooling. You haven’t yet figured out your “groove,” and already the complaints come rolling in, “I hate homeschool!” Or “Why do we have to homeschool…

This Week's Curated Content
Have a risk-averse child? That is, one that is NOT open to trying new things - be it sports to spinach- no matter what you say, how the option is presented, or how good or fun it all may be.
An article in ADDITUDEMAG.COM suggests that one reason for this aversion to risk in all children [adults too, imho] is a lack of confidence or esteem. One suggestion stems from the Nurtured Heart Approach which suggests that parents [and teachers too] take time for ...
"Recognizing what your son does right as frequently as possible will positively affect his behavior and self-esteem, which might make him more inclined to step out of his comfort zone and try new things."

Alaska Homeschool Tips to Know Your Child is Reading Ready
Are you thinking of introducing the world of words to your child? Do you want your preschooler to start reading? Alaska homeschool believes your child will show reading readiness early into their school environment. Each child is different and have separate milestones. This will help you prepare your child for the reading world. Here are all the ways you will know if your child is ready to read. If you listen to your child carefully, you would see all the signs and can actually get them to read when they actually want to. 1. Some kids would show interest in reading as early as preschool while some may not begin until they are in the first grade. Some may have inherent issues that can delay their learning. On the other hand, there could be some that have no issues but a reluctance to start reading. These are the different things that can lead to an understanding of their reading readiness. The issues also let you know if you need to use a more structured program to help them or can start reading. Some of the learners would show an immediate love for words, picking it up on the go. 2. According to Alaska homeschools, if the child is reading and recognizing letters, they are ready to embrace the world of words. You can introduce them to sounds and phonics if they show some interest in recognizing the words. In some cases, the kids would pick up on the sounds early on. they would have a natural understanding of the language, which helps them. You must consider these things to build the reading abilities. Make sure you know if your child is picking up sounds naturally. 3. If they have been making the sounds and pretending to read the words, you can introduce them to reading. You will be able to build on these aspects with greater ease. If they are not showing that interest, it won’t be easy to help them pick up things. 4. When you enroll them into Alaska homeschool, you should also check their relationship with books. You might notice that they have a healthy one. They may be opening the book. Looking at the last page of the book is a sign that they are interested. You might notice them picking up books. At this point, you can begin reading out to them. If you see them turn the pages, they are ready to read, and you can show them how to do that 5. If the child has been listening to you carefully and can remember the words, it is time to note that they are ready to read. They would be repeating all the words that you have said to them. in fact, they would remember the story word by word. This could help you introduce them to different words 6. Lastly, if they have been playing around with sounds and rhyming things, you might want to consider helping them read and understand the nuances of the language. The rhyming words will let the Alaska homeschools know your child is ready to read.

Math textbooks that are too easy
Math textbooks that are too easy
I find that in the homeschooling community, math textbooks that I consider to be "easy" or remedial, such as Saxon and Math U See, are widespread. I think these textbooks are "easy" or remedial because they have a lot of emphasis on review and repetitive practice questions, and they do not teach students how to think ingeniously. Requiring students to use ingenuity is so crucial for teaching students the important life lesson of how to think. Learning the math knowledge is obviously an important part of math; however, an equally important part of math is learning how to think. These textbooks can be useful as supplements for extra practice, but they are not good standalone textbooks.
Math U See is a very remedial textbook. It is built on the assumption that students using it do not mentally understand the idea of numbers and mathematical processes, so by its very nature it is remedial. Additionally, all of the problems can be done by simply copying the DVD. There are no problems that require ingenuity or make the student think on his own (I understand that in newer editions there is an honours page; however, these questions are still ridiculously easy). Math U See also uses some weird language (like stating the Pythagorean Theorem as x2 + y2 = z2 instead of a2 + b2 = c2) and has some ridiculously cumbersome processes, such as regrouping, which can confuse students.
I am less familiar with Saxon; however, from what I understand, it is also quite remedial. It is built on the spiral concept, which is very heavy on review. Having a large part of the lesson be review is not helpful because, at the end of the lesson, students have spent so much time on review drills that there is no time for challenging questions requiring ingenious thinking. Additionally, due to how math builds on itself, students will need to use concepts learned in previous lessons, which can be review in itself. I have also seen many students who have used Saxon and, because of its heavy emphasis on review, are around 3 years behind in math.
Saxon and Math U See have their places. They can be good for reluctant learners or remedial students. However, they are not good standalone textbooks due to their repetitive, remedial nature and lack of challenging problems that make students think.

How To Homeschool When You Can't
Don’t feel guilty! Homeschool is challenging enough when you have multiple kids, a toddler, and maybe a student who is reluctant to learn. Yet, in all this, there is a calm in the storm. As a Christian homeschooler, I take solace in knowing that God has created me for this very purpose. In life, because life happens, many different situations can arise that might make us feel as if we can’t keep…

Multiple studies have shown how both in-person and online tutoring programs can improve student outcomes and advance equity goals. But better access to tutoring also presents significant benefits to your child, you as parent or guardian, and the child’s teachers as well. These benefits include that extra support students need to help reinforce what the teacher has previously instructed. Plus, Tutoring avoids what I like to call “THE PARENT TRAP”, where parents (who probably haven’t been in elementary or middle school for a looooong time) are stuck spending their evenings and weekends attempting to teach or reteach what you’d hope had been learned in school because your child simply does 👏🏽 not 👏🏽 understand 👏🏽! But enough with all that. YOU just want to know how can online tutoring help MY learner. NP. I got you. 💪🏽 I'm a certified/licensed classroom teacher for over a decade.
