At a very young age, we were each given a small plot of earth to tend our very own gardens. We could plant whatever we wanted: fruit, vegetables, flowers, trees, or even just let the weeds take over. Whatever we decided to do, we were told that the success or failure of our plantings was one hundred percent our responsibility. Each of us received this gift with gratitude and excitement as we each created our unique and individualized design.
The benefits of introducing children to gardening are numerous and life-enriching. Kids are inherently curious and soak up new information like sponges. Gardening with children encourages a lifelong commitment to good environmental practices and stewardship of our earth. Since gardening is a hands-on experience, kids relish getting dirty and wet, and especially enjoy finding and touching slimy creatures. “What do you do with it?” the child retorted.
“You cook it and eat it. It’s fresh,” I answered.
“But it’s not in a carton!” was the prompt and surprised look on the child’s face.
We need to teach children about where our food comes from as well as the benefits and nutritional values of growing our own produce. In this way, they will establish healthy eating habits.
Life-Skills: Perhaps more than anything, gardening instills skills and qualities that will last a lifetime fostering cognitive development and problem-solving skills. Patience, creativity, curiosity, tolerance, generosity, responsibility, pride, and respect are just a few of the virtues that we all learn in the garden. We can’t rush a tomato. We must be patient and learn that delayed gratification reaps rewards. Designing a garden stimulates creativity and imagination. When we investigate the insect crawling on the artichoke, our curiosity is aroused. Tolerance of misshapen or imperfect crops is necessary. We are responsible for our plant’s life by providing it the essentials it needs to survive–soil, sunlight, water, and food. I want to talk about Randulph Skuli Hirahara. In a flashback, baby Kousuke was eating sweets for breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday. Rand couldn't even put his foot down for him to eat healthy. Was he starting to give up on raising him all together because it was futile going against Yui? She definitely had all the power in the parenting department and fought him every step of the way, undoing any good lesson he tried to instill in Kousuke. But I doubt he went back to finishing the conversation about the rigged claw machine. So how much push back did he actually do? If he had stuck to his guns and given him more attention as a child, would Kousuke still have ended up so misguided? Yui isn't entirely at fault. His negligence enabled her to pit the brothers against each other vying for his affection. He also contributed to the resentment by making Nol his brother's responsibility. How was Kousuke supposed to fill in the gap of an absent father, especially when he feels neglected himself? The most I ask from Rand is to realize the extent of his abuse more for their sake than his own and help them heal in whatever way they need. 1/?
One of my hopes is for Simhan to show them what a real paternal figure is like after any of his initial mistrust. Not saying he's a perfect dad but he expresses remorse for the harm he did to Shinae. It's interesting that Simhan and Rand share similarities: no living family, terrible wives (one got divorced), two children (one got both kids), came from poverty I think (one got rich). They could gain some insight from each other on fatherhood. Like does Rand regret keeping Nol instead of sending him away? Was he going to abandon Kousuke to Yui in the divorce? And did Simhan ever think about giving Shinae up? Did he make the choice for one of his daughters to go with her mom because he couldn't afford to raise them both? I'm not sure Shinae's mom really wanted any custody. 2/?
Okay, I know I said I would put off asks that contain spoilers, but because this one is SO tiny and I can answer most of the ask without addressing it, I'm going to answer this anyway. This is why i also think it is important to look at Nol and Kousuke both as two parts of a bigger problem - it's more readily evident that Nol's upbringing was awful and set him worse for wear, but Kousuke was not better. Rand really wasn't present for Kousuke's upbringing. I think maybe he tried, at first, but between fighting with Yui and taking care of his career, attending the business, Rand seems like he made his decision, right? And like, don't get me wrong - going against Yui was probably difficult. Trying to find time to go back and talk to Kousuke when she wasn't around to und what he says and tries to teach. But... did he even try that? How often did he try to sit down with Kousuke, or take him around with him?
On a totally different subject, I was talking to someone on reddit about how Kousuke's habit of deflection is something Yui is a deft expect at, and how he probably has never had to face accepting responsibility for anything. With Yui as his prime role model, how else would he have picked it up? How often did Kousuke even SEE Rand - not just eating family dinner together anything but how often did Kousuke ever see how Rand interacts with people at work, how he handles his mistakes? Kousuke not only dealt with an absent parent, but because the one parent who might've instilled any good values in him was so absent, what was Kousuke to pick up on?
I don't want to completely write Rand off, because clearly dealing with Yui is not as easy at it sounds. But at the same time - Kousuke is still his child and he still failed him as a parent, and then went on to fail Nol as well. And it upsets me so much because I DO THINK Rand wants good things for both of them - but he's a shit parent and he failed them. I think I wrote a post somewhere on here about how every parent has failed their kids - it's just that some fail them worse than others. Kousuke was put in a parental role towards a brother he never wanted who he never was able to resolve his feelings over, and he himself didn't have a fatherly experience to ever compare it to. Just... expectations. I've seen this in how Kousuke treats both Nol and Shinae from time to time, like he is their parent who knows better (which is rich since Shinae does, in fact, have a caring father lol) and it does have the sort of air of "absent father who doesn't really know his child".
Does a parent who has their child's best interests at heart - but whose best interests conflict with what their child thinks is best - count as a good parent?
I LOVE these parallels you've drawn between Rand and Shimhan and your thoughts in particular. Shimhan is probably the closest thing to a good dad we've seen: he puts so much importance in Shinae that it has, at times blinded him. By wanting to protect her (from reality) he's put her in bad situations. His refusal to let her start working so that she had to sneak around to do it lead to a fight. My heart goes out to Shimhan, because he's trying to do the best that he can to raise her within their means - and it's impossible. And instead of dealing with it, he turns to drink in effort to deal with his stress. He's wholly human and it hurts because it brings us to a very grey area: you can still hurt the people you love even if you want the best for them. And in a way, I think that's how Rand's situation started? I think he wanted to take care of his other son, but his hands were tied. I mean, I'm saying this loosely because ultimately Rand made the decisions that lead to him having another child in the first place, but the point still stands that because of this, a whole human was caught in the crossfires, and he was unable to protect him. Maybe in the past he'd tried to stand up for Nol and Yui was worse. Maybe it was because he'd "lost" Kousuke to her that he knew it wasn't worth the fight? idk, but I agree they could really learn from each other what it means to protect your kid and take care of them.
I think Rand DOES regret keeping Nol - not in a you shouldn't be here way but because he's realized keeping him was NEVER safe for Nol, that he was NEVER going to be the father he needed. Rereading chapter 149 is REALLY hard because Rand is absolutely out of line and he says a lot of things in anger that he never should - things he probably doesn't even mean, but he voices them. But in particular, some lines really stood out to me. "Why do you have to be my son?" "I should have just sent you to away to boarding school from the very start." Like, these lines are awful, amongst everything else he says. In no way am i excusing anything he says because it's just awful and you can tell how much it hurts Nol to hear. But those lines in particular always stuck out to me - like subconsciously they reveal something more. If Nol wasn't HIS son, then he never would have been in this situation. If he'd sent him to boarding school, he'd have been away from Yui.
I do think we need to see more of Rand but I think up until now he's probably a fool enough to believe a. he's protecting Nol the best he can (:|) and b. that through tough love maybe Nol will stay out of trouble enough. I think maybe Rand is finally starting to see that what he thought he was doing to help Nol wasn't - and how deeply Nol's trouble goes. I wonder what he thought a day after Nol pleaded guilty, when the rash anger had burned away. Did he still think Nol was doing it to be difficult and defiant or did it get him to start reflecting on things?
How much is Rand aware of Kousuke's hand in the game, of how much he and Kousuke BOTH have worn away Nol's self-confidence and self-esteem. I know Rand loves Nol, in his own way, but how much does he realize HE has irreparably hurt his own child?
I also wonder how much Kousuke could learn from Shimhan what parental figures look like. He already knows his experience is different, coming from the family he does. But I would love if he could see, through experience, that he has been making excuses that aren't deserved. Sure, Rand is a very busy man, but away EVERY SINGLE YEAR on Kousuke's birthday? Unavoidably? Not even making up his birthday celebration later? He's seen already the lengths Shinae went through to take care of her father. I hope he can eventually get the message this parents are terrible not because they are very important people but because they failed him POINTEDLY as a child.
And god yes I want to know more about Shinae's family and the split - if Shimhan had WANTED to keep Shinhye or not. I agree that there's a sense that their mom maybe didn't even want to be a mom, and that taking Shinhye may have felt like saddling her? It's such an unorthodox way to handle custody that I just can't fathom how it happened. But it's possible that Shimhan did, in the end, fail Shinhye.
SO MUCH OF THIS STORY IS CHILDREN BEING FAILED BY THEIR PARENTS AND IT HURTS ME. But at least some parents seem to be able to figure this out.
Now on to the tiny spoilery part lol
This part is a bit FP spoilery. I think Rand is genuinely concerned for both sons and is recognizing how much he failed them (when reflecting on Nol's scarf and perhaps Kousuke's drunk phone call as well). He didn't properly raise them or show them much care. In the end, he couldn't protect them either. But does he see this more as a failure to free them all from Yui or as his failure to be a good father in spite of her? I think Yui wants Kousuke to forsake him at some point so she can finally kick him out of the picture. This will make him turn to her only and she'd have a stronger grip on him. As for Nol, Rand was fine with him getting out of control earlier since it got under Yui's skin. Now that he knows he's not doing ok, what will he do about him? I don't want Nol to become hard like him to those he loves because he believes it'll end up hurting them. I hope the Park's party will be a huge contrast to the agency party, more chill and lighthearted. It's Nol's birthday! It'd be nice if Mina can show him maternal concern. She was sympathetic when she saw him on the news. And she can give Kousuke some cake, he clearly needs after tonight 🤣🤣 3/3
I think Rand is finally starting to see it. Up until now, i wonder what he really thought of them - did he think Nol was just difficult to be difficult? We already had a little more insight in how he sees Kousuke, and the fact that he wishes he wouldn't give his whole life to this company, that there was more room for him to be himself. But what does he think of Nol? I genuinely think he didn't want Nol to follow in his footsteps, that he was SPARING him from the family business, rather than thinking he wasn't good enough. How much of what he he has said to Nol in public is real vs a production put on so that no one would think he's being soft on him?
Did he really care if Nol is top of his classes? Does he really care that Nol cares so much about having friends? What about when he was younger and got locked away for two years? What did he think, or feel? Does he have any idea of how unbearably LONELY Nol is? How much he hates himself?
When he's holding Nol's scarf like that, looking at it with that expression, I think it's maybe the first time he's starting to realize how bad things are for Nol. That he made the choice to plead guilty. That even if he was drunk, he made a choice to jump from a balcony into a pool floors below. Has Nol tried to hurt himself before, like we've wondered? I get so worked up about it lol because I think the signs are there if Rand just looks hard enough.
Does he know how easily it would be to lose Nol like that?
I do think he's already very concerned about Kousuke and his need for his approval - I wonder SO MUCH what Kousuke's voice mail to him said! PLEASE when will we know? But I think maybe now he's finally grasping the gravity of it. I also don't think it's unlikely that he could be realizing his failing was both - that he couldn't get them away from Yui but he also couldn't be a good father in spite of it all. Like, clearly getting away from Yui was impossible, so was he completely unable to a parent at all otherwise?
STRESS. I am ready for Rand to realize he failed his kids and they deserved so much better. I want him to SAY as much, too. I want him to acknowledge, to them, that they deserved better. And I'd like him to make the efforts. I know enlisting Shinae to help Nol's case was one such way of trying to help. But they don't or need a shadow father - they deserve a PRESENT father, someone who thinks about his words, who doesn't make them feel pit against each other, who doesn't make them feel worthless. UGH. My feelings man. MY FEELINGS.
This is a really interesting point about Yui and I want to come back to this later because I have a theory I've been ruminating on where I think Yui orchestrated whatever event brought Kousuke back to the family business from college, that cost him his friends, because she didn't like him rebelling and straying from her control. So honestly the idea that she would be trying to get him to forsake Rand and further isolate him makes SO. MUCH. SENSE. All she has to do is nudge a little because, well, Rand has already given him reason to maybe forsake him, huh.
I don't know how likely this is but I'd love if Rand would at least visit Nol in jail. Try to talk to him. I know he can't earn Nol's trust over night but maybe if he makes effort, it could help. Part of Nol's issue is, obviously, that he's always felt like a mistake, a burden, and Rand is one of those who've made him feel like he's worthless, so Rand has to put in the work to prove to Nol that this is not the case. Maybe that, with some therapy, could be beneficial? Because same, I don't want Nol to harden so much that he turns into Rand, that he loses himself. I want Nol to rise and heal from his experiences, instead of repeat the cycle, you know?
BUT GOD yes pls give us a NICE wholesome party! Some chaos, sure! Some shenanigans, sure! Nol being faced with his friends in a situation where he can't run, Kousuke's cake YES lmao. I know it's probably really optimistic and hopeful, but god I just want the party to have a note of hope damnit, of friends who so fiercely love him that Nol is forced to accept it and know that he's not as along as he thinks.

Hear me out, it isn't my job as a mother of youngish kids to micromanage their life. So many of the decisions they face day to day should be theirs to make. If you don't teach them how to make small decisions as young as possible, you find yourself with young adult (or older) kids who don't at all know how to make bigger decisions. And yes, talking through huge decisions with an adult child should always be an option open to them, there are just some decisions you want your adult child to be equipped to make on their own. And it 100% starts with letting your 2 year old pick out their outfit for the day, no matter what the results are, so long as it's seasonally appropriate.
That said. It is my job as a mom to micromanage basic self care habits. Especially in a world where kids are needing things like antidepressants younger and younger.
Like this might not be a popular opinion among those on tumblr who skew young, but training my kids to shower regularly, keep their space neat, eat regularly, drink water, and have good sleep habits, is in fact giving my kids the tools to fight their mental health battles for the rest of their lives. Especially since it's hard to want to do these things when depressed. Sure, a daily shower isn't going to up serotonin production, but stewing in your own stink really just makes things so much worse. It just does. Argue all you want, but you know it's true.
I can't force my adult children keep the tools I gave them as kids, but it is still my job to give them those tools and teach them how to use them, and why. Always the why. Can't forget the way.
Also, things like sleep habits look different for different people. I already know my 13yo who has adhd is built to work second shift. So unless it's a school night I don't really force him into bed at a "reasonable" hour. BUT if he's going to be up until 2am through the summer, he needs to be sleeping until at least 10am. So long as he's getting his 8-10 hours a night, that's all that matters. This does, of course, mean I need to not expect him to be up by 8am when he doesn't have school. But I never did understand parents not letting their growing kids sleep until noon or whatever. If your child is tired, let them sleep. Otherwise they are sleep deprived and cranky and literally no one wins. If they need to be up early for an appointment, communicate that a day or two prior so they can adjust their schedule.
Eating regularly? Some people do well on 3 big meals a day, with maybe a snack or 2. Some people do better on a smaller meal every 3-4 hours. Some people need to graze through the day. Growing kids? Feed them when they are hungry. Provide opportunities to snack. Make sure there are plenty of healthy options that they actually like and will eat, and it's fine. But teach them to recognize hunger and to eat as needed. Not when the clock teaches them to eat. Also teach them that calories are calories when they are depressed and lack appetite. All food has nutrients and calories are your friend. Balanced is great, sure, but consuming calories is the primary objective.
Anyway, I could go on and on. But with that viral post going around about how general self care really does help with things like depression, I just wanted to speak up that a good mom instills the basics of self care through your childhood. And it very much does look like telling your kid to take a shower, telling your kid to go to bed, telling your kid to eat something, and telling your kid to clean their room (after teaching young them how to do this). I know teenagers aren't a fan of being told what to do, but sometimes just sometimes it's preparing you to be healthier adults. And it preps you to fight bigger battles.
