You hid them because, although you were willing to share, nobody would ever tell you when they were taking the last bag.

There's nothing quite like the minor inconvenience of reaching into the box for a bag of fruit snacks, and then having it be empty. It really ruins a day.

So, when you went into the kitchen for a bag of fruit snacks, and all of your hiding places were empty, you were perturbed to say the least.

Bucky, Sam, and Steve were sitting around the island, watching as you looked in seemingly random cabinets and containers.

You huffed angrily, moving to check the one of the last spots they could be. It was you're holy grail of hiding places.

You opened the freezer drawer, pulling out a box of plant based burgers. Under that box was a another box, this time of sugar-free, dairy-free, fat-free ice cream bars.

You opened the ice cream bar box, tipping it over to empty the contents onto the counter.

The ice cream slid across the island, but no fruit snacks came out of the box.

You took a deep breath, trying not to scream. You really just needed fruit snacks right now, and there appeared to be none anywhere.

You refused to make eye contact with any of the guys, knowing it would set you off. Instead, you collected the nasty ice cream bars, dumping them into the trash.

ou really wished they tasted good, but apparently they aren't even useful for hiding your good snacks.

The three men all had their eyes on you, waiting for a reaction. You didn't know which one of them found all your fruit snacks, but you weren't going to give them the satisfaction.

If they wanted a prank war, so be it.

With tears in your eyes, you recycled the cardboard box. Then you finally turned to look at them, watching as their expressions quickly shifted into that of concern.

"I'm going to the store, do you need anything?" You stuttered through the question, trying to play up how upset you were. You waited a minute for one or more of them to answer, when nothing came you turned back toward the door.

"Y/N, what's wrong?" Bucky called as you reached the door.

Hook. Line. Sinker.

"It's just been a tough day. I- It's stupid. I'll see you guys later." You turned around again, walking slightly slower than normal.

Bucky jumped off his chair, running to stop you before you left the kitchen. It must have been his idea to eat all of your fruit snacks. He grabbed your should, spinning you around.

"It's not stupid if it's got you this upset. Talk to me, please?"

You waited a beat before pulling him into a long hug. You pretended to cry more, waiting for him to ask what was wrong again.

"Doll, what's got you so upset?" He rubbed your back, unaware of the devious smirk on your face.

You spoke into his chest, leaving your head buried there. "I just, everything is going wrong today. I woke up late, so Tony was annoyed with me. I spent 3 hours trying to fix this piece of tech, only to realize it wasn't working because it wasn't freaking plugged in. I had to rewrite my code for Redwing's updates four times because it kept getting deleted."

You whined as you listed the events of your day. It really was a shitty day, hence the need for fruit snacks.

"Then I dropped my lunch on the floor, so I just ate an apple. I stubbed my toe on the way to training, so it hurt the whole time. I spent ten minutes looking for my phone while I was using it to call someone. I stepped in a puddle, so now my socks are wet."

You took a deep breathe, really laying on the guilt for the last part.

"And when I went to get fruit snacks to cheer myself up, they were all gone."

You hugged him tighter before pulling away, wiping the fake tears from your face.

"So now I'm going to the store. Hopefully nothing else goes wrong because I don't know if I can take it." You leaned your head back, dramatically trying to get the tears to subside.

"Hey, it's okay." Bucky continued to rub your arms, trying to soothe you. "Why don't you go make some tea or something, and I'll go to the store for you?"

You gave him a small, watery smile. "You would do that for me?"

"Of course, Doll. Steve and Sam will come too." He glared at them over your head.

"You guys are the best." You gave them all a hug as they left the kitchen, smirking to yourself once they were gone.

"Y/N, we're back!" Sam called from the elevator, expecting you to still be in the kitchen.

The three men walked down the hall, stopping in their tracks when they saw you.

You were sitting on the couch, fruit snacks in hand, watching a movie with Nat and Wanda.

"What the hell?" Bucky looked between you and the fruit snacks in your hand.

"Where did you even get those?" Steve asked incredulously.

"Well, when the frozen fruit snacks are missing, I know I'm being punked." You smirked at them, laughing with Nat and Wanda.

"So- you..." Bucky trailed off, disbelief clouding his thought process.

"A few waterworks and you three were putty in my hands." You walked toward them, taking the grocery bag with the fruit snacks. "Thanks for the refill." You winked, walking past them into the kitchen.

They stood frozen in shock for a minute, before following you down the hall.

"But how did you know it was us?" Sam asked.

"Why else would the three of you be sitting on the bar stools at the island? You were 100% waiting for a meltdown that I never gave you." You smirked as you hid the bags in different cabinets.

"You never answered my question." Steve stated, still curious about your secret hiding place. "We looked everywhere for hidden fruit snacks."

You placed an arm on Bucky's shoulder as you jumped onto the island counter, unscrewing the top of the chandelier.

"Everywhere?" You questioned as you added a few bags to the compartment before screwing the lid back on. "I've got secret compartments all over the kitchen."

"Then why not just take one of those? Why send us to the store?" Sam asked, still incredulous that you got the three of them this badly.

"Well, I'm assuming you ate all the bags you did find?" You reached out, waiting for Bucky to help you down. He grabbed your waist, slowly lifting you setting you on the floor.

The three of them nodded.

"So I needed more." You shrugged, tossing the now empty box in the recycling as well.

"Was your day really that awful?" Bucky asked in a soft voice, feeling slightly used.

"It was." You smiled at him, moving to hug him again. "Thank you for caring. Honestly, it's really sweet." You kissed him on the cheek before turning to go back to your movie.

You couldn't stop yourself from calling one more thing over your shoulder as you left.

"This was round one boys, and I was only on the defensive. I'd say be prepared, but you'll never see me coming." You winked.

Kaeya has poured two glasses of wine. One for him and one for the woman sitting next to him. She was smiling with the most genuine smile. Pointing up at the sky. The moon and the stars were shining bright. He didn't need any other light source to see her beautiful face.

Just the two of them sitting at the balcony of their shared house. Silently observing the beauty of the night. Drinking from his glass, the sweet-bitter taste was dancing on his tongue. It was as beautiful as the woman he was spending the time with. 

"You know, you are really beautiful tonight, y/n. How about I take a day off tomorrow just to spend it with you?"

No answer.

"We could go on a walk around the city or perhaps go outside the city's walls?"

Yet again, silence.

Kaeya finished his glass with one quick motion. Pouring more wine. The burning sensation in his throat was slowly reminding him something.

"Hey, Dearest. Why don't you talk to me?" 

Silence. 

"Ah, you are right. I'm... a fool."

He starts laughing. It's not a laugh a happy man would have, it's quite the opposite. Kaeya's in pain. His chest hurts, he knows why but dares not to admit it.

Removing his eye patch and tossing it on the table. Looking at his smiling companion. Why is she so beautiful? He is such a lucky man, having somebody like that. So why is he feeling this pain in his chest? Why does he feel like his heart will burst?

The glass with wine shatters. The shards are covered in the red liquid. He closes his eyes. Trying to force the tears to stop forming. Biting his lips. It hurts so much. His hazy memories are slowly reminding him what's going on. 

Just like a movie it all flashes back in the moment you were standing between him and the enemy. Blocking the hit for him. Falling to ground with a painful scream. But before that you managed to look at your beloved. He is safe, you did well. 

He stares in horror at the scene. Wishing it's just a bad horror he is watching. This can't be happening. You didn't waste your life for him, did you? If there was somebody supposed to die it's him. He made a mistake. A mistake which cost him you.

Kaeya is silently sobbing, one hand hiding his face while the other is gripping his attire at chest area. He is sure nobody can see him, yet he still feels like to hide. He might be drunk but he knows the woman next to him is just an illusion created by his own mind. There's nobody at all it's just him and the wine. 

You are no longer alive. It's all because of him being cocky that day. He was full of himself and so sure he will keep you safe. In the end he lost his remaining pride and you...

Diluc is walking in circles. Biting his thumb while doing so. It hurts, he can taste blood but nothing hurts more than his heart right now. Sweat is forming on his forehead as he is trying to suppress his tears. His shoes are making loud thumbs against the wooden floor. The sounds can be heard in the room under his. 

Everyone is silent in the room. Elzer, Adelinde, the old man Tunner and a few more. Listening to noises from Master Diluc's room, yet nobody dares to let him know he is loud. It would be more than rude. Especially now when he has to deal with yet another painful experience. 

First he lost his father and several years later he lost his wife. He was finally happy. Having you by his side was a blessing. You were there for him whenever he needed and he did the same for you. Feeling down? He'd be there cupping your face, planting butterfly kisses on your face. Snuggling you close into a protective embrace.

You did something similar. Playing with his hair when he was snuggled to your neck. Brushing through them, tucking them behind his ear. Saying soothing words. He would fall asleep like that.

But now? You are gone. Your sudden passing away affected the whole manor. You were liked among the maids as you often joined in small talk or offered to help them. Despite their protests it's their job. You didn't mind it.

Old Tunner and folks from vineyards remember how you often walked around. Caressing the grapes or bringing some snack.

Simply put. You were the star which was shining bright for everyone. Lifting their spirits and now you are gone. Everyone is mourning you but none can think of how much he is hurt. 

When Diluc heard about your critical condition he rushed to see you but doctors didn't let him. You needed to rest but your body was weak, they knew you won't make it. In the end allowing him to see you for the last time. Holding your already cold hand. 

He sat there for minutes, until you left him all alone. He didn't move, doctors had to lead him out. Somebody had to pick him up and bring home. He laid on the bed, one hand over his face. Trying to keep his tears away. 

Nobody dared to knock on the door. Not even Elzer who always worried about his young Master. Trying to offer some kind words. He knew his words would be useless now. All he can do is just wait. He knows if he goes his Master will be out of control and won't listen to anything. 

It's just another painful hit for Master Diluc. He thought he would be happy finally. Already had plans for the future with you. Everything is pointless now. Why does life keep taking his beloved ones from him? How much more he has to suffer…

Xiao is silently sitting at the top of Wangshu Inn. The cold wind is caressing his hair. He is observing the distant horizon, how the moon is slowly going up. His mind is blank. If he were a mortal it would be probably clouded by negative thoughts. 

He has no feelings or need for them. He is one of the mighty Adepti, there's no room for stupid things like feelings or emotions. At least that's what he tries to keep repeating to himself. 

Mortals come and leave out of his life. Which is only natural for their short life span. He wouldn't be bothered with it at all. But there was a woman who managed to change him. Showed him what those odd feelings in his chest are. She proved to him he has feelings and emotions. He was just suppressing them his whole life. 

Perhaps it was all for the better. He feels lonely. Usually it would be the two of you sitting here. You would be nudging him about random things. Snuggle onto his shoulder, whispering some nonsense. He would look at you and see those shiny, beautiful eyes of yours. 

He remembers when you fed him with his favorite dish. He was confused at first why would you do it. Explaining to him it's something people in love would do for their partner. Take care of them. He tried to feed you too, it was a clumsy attempt. But you appreciated his efforts.

You showed him so many nice things he could see only from mortal's eyes. He understands some things he couldn't before. All because of you. But what's this feeling? Regret? No. He does not regret letting you enter his life. He regrets being too late. 

Before he could do something you were already gone. The demon which attacked you. That sneaky bastard avoiding his watchful gaze. It dared to assault somebody he thought of as a close person. Taking you from him just as if bonds are nothing. 

When he arrived you were possessed by the demon. Its power went out of control, destroying everything around. He tried to talk to you but there was nothing left, just agony and darkness. He could see the suffering in your face. You didn't want to. You never were a violent person, yet now you are destroying everything. 

For the first time in his life Xiao felt anger was taking control over him. He wanted to eradicate all demons. For what they did all those millennials, for what they did just right now. He knew you will eventually die and leave him, he was fine with that. But he never thought of losing you like this.

He has to do his duty as a Yaksha, the Liyue's protector. Pointing the tip of his spear at your throat. He stopped only because you tried to talk. The words coming out of your lips were just gibberish. 

"Farewell, y/n. I'm sorry."

Ending it just like that. Watching how the blood was leaving your body. Feeling sick from the sight of it. He released you from the agony the demon was causing you. Banishing it as it tried to escape from your dying body. There's no demon safe, not from Xiao. He will continue his duty.

But one thing is certain. He will always feel lonely at night as he got used to your presence. You will remain in his heart forever. Always will have that special place as a foolish but lovely mortal, daring to approach him despite all of his fame as a Yaksha. The cold he feels right now bothers him. Just if you could be there...

(19:10) Spring Greenhouse

Vyn took me to the center of the greenhouse – next to a set of chairs and table for resting.

On the table there was a basin of water with a small hardwood cutting soaking in it. The tray next to the basin held adhesive tape, thin razor blades, and similar tools.

MC: These are…?

Vyn: This is a hardwood cutting from a grape vine in the winter. It needs to soak in water for twelve hours before being grafted in order to replenish moisture.

Vyn checked his watch as he spoke.

Vyn: Right now, it’s been just about twelve hours.

MC: Huh?

Vyn: During my previous phone call with Raphael, I had him help prepare all the materials for us.

MC: (So that means… From the start, Dr. Richter wanted to come plant a grape vine?)

I felt my ears grow hot, and didn’t dare think more deeply about it.

MC: Then Dr. Richter, what are we going to do?

Vyn: First pick a rootstock plant, then graft this wood cutting onto it.

Vyn quickly chose a young grape plant for the rootstock of the graft. He kept only a branch that was half-lignified, and eliminated all the other branch tips.

Then he disinfected the blades and scraped a 2-cm notch on the lower end of the hardwood cutting.

Next, he split open the center of the rootstock, inserted the lower end of the cutting into the gash in the rootstock, and used plastic tape to tightly bind and secure them.

MC: Is that all that’s needed?

Vyn: Yes. After this, it just needs to be carefully maintained.

MC: Then how long is it until this wound matures, and a grape seedling can normally grow?

Vyn: Two to three weeks.

Vyn: If you’re worried, we can set up a camera here so we can watch it every day.

MC: I’m not that worried. I trust your technique, I’m sure the grape vine will grow very well.

The tips of Vyn’s mouth curved upward in a joyful smile.

Vyn: I’m also extremely certain.

Vyn: It’s almost dinnertime, let’s go back.

(20:43) Restaurant

When Vyn and I returned, dinner had also just been prepared.

Raphael looked between Vyn and me several times and smiled.

Raphael: Vilhelm, I don’t want to be a nuisance that interrupts people’s dates. Would it be better if you helped me test the wine tonight?

Vyn: Alright.

MC: Test wine?

Vyn: Barosk’s wine appraisal meeting is in half a month. Raphael wanted me to try the new wine from his winery before it happens.

Raphael: After all, Vilhelm’s tongue is much pickier than the vast majority of wine tasters.

Raphael: Then let’s begin.

Raphael clapped his hands as he spoke. The doors to the restaurant opened at the sound, and a male servant entered, pushing a serving table of wine.

There were a total of five bottles of wine on the table, the body of the wine bottles wrapped in burlap sacks to block the wine label.

Vyn: That was quite unnecessary. I would never allow external factors to interfere.

Raphael: But I wouldn’t be able to help but make the mental connection, that your score would be somehow influenced by the winery information.

Raphael: So please bear with it and go with the usual method.

Raphael: And also, isn’t it better to let Miss MC take this opportunity to experience joys of a blind taste test?

MC: (Blind taste test?)

MC: (Is it like those games in the movies, where they can determine the wine’s source location, year, and winery brand just from one glance and one sip?)

MC: (Does Dr. Richter have this level of mastery of wines?)

As I was thinking, Vyn had already turned his head towards me to ask my opinion.

Vyn: What do you think? Do you want to try blind taste testing?

MC: Alright, it seems pretty interesting.

The servant lit the candles on the serving table, then used a wine key to unseal each bottle one by one, pulling out the cork. Next, he slowly poured the wine into the decanter.

After the wine had been allowed to breathe, he picked up the first decanter and poured the wine into the wineglasses in front of Vyn and me.

Vyn picked up the glass and gently swirled it, then slightly lowered his head and inhaled the scent of the wine.

Vyn: The red color is very pale, and there’s a mild fragrance of plum, mixed with a bit of the scent of violet and truffle.

Vyn: It must be made with a mix of Grenache and a small amount of Silas.*

Vyn lifted the glass and took a sip, then several seconds later, spit out the wine into the spit bucket.

Vyn: The alcohol content isn’t low, and it has a complex aftertaste.

Vyn: It’s a 1983 blend from White Eagle Winery in southern Barosk.*

I clumsily tried to imitate Vyn, first smelling the scent of the wine, then drinking a small sip.

MC: (It’s pretty good… I can’t taste anything else.)

At that, the servant took off the burlap sack wrapped around the first wine bottle and showed us the label.

Raphael applauded in approval.

Raphael: Completely correct.

MC: That’s amazing, Dr. Richter! Have you specifically learned winetasting?

Raphael glanced at me with considerable interest, then turned to look towards Vyn.

Vyn smiled as he nodded.

Vyn: Winetasting is a way to socialize. When I had just come of age, I specialized in learning winetasting for a while, then gradually I became more and more interested in it.

Vyn: In my free time, I also interact and discuss with wine critics at wine parties.

MC: I see.

After that, Vyn tried the second and third wines in succession, and as before, was completely correct.

In a flash, it was time for the fourth bottle of wine.

After Vyn smelled the wine, he took a sip, and this time he swallowed instead of spitting the wine out into the bucket.

Vyn: This must be a new wine from your winery, isn’t it? Made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.*

Vyn: The taste is decent. If you let it age for a bit longer, it would be even better.

Vyn: I can give this wine a 98.

Raphael: 98? You know, two wine critics have already given this wine full marks.

Vyn: Didn’t you invite me because you wanted to hear a harsher opinion?

Raphael: Well yes, but I was more hoping to get your first perfect score with this wine.

MC: First perfect score?

Raphael: Miss MC, you probably didn’t know that Vilhelm is one of the harshest wine critics that I’ve ever met in the world.

Raphael: Whether it’s wine sold at the highest auction price, or wine widely praised by wine critics, there’s never been one that’s gotten a perfect score from him.

Vyn: There’s a saying in the world of wine tasting that I agree with – “The difference between wines with high scores and wines with a perfect score of 100 lies in the “impulse” of the moment.”

Vyn: “Like art, music, and beauty, there must be a burst of emotion.”

Vyn: I just feel like those wines are all lacking in a bit of flavor.

Raphael: I think it might not be the wine that’s lacking in that bit of flavor.

As we chatted, the servant had already taken the last decanter and poured its wine into the wineglasses in front of Vyn and me.

I lifted my glass and lightly took a sip.

The wine was rich and smooth, and the harmonious scent lingered in my mouth long after I swallowed the wine.

I turned my head, wanting to hear how Vyn would judge this wine.

Vyn picked up the glass, but after slightly scenting it, a faint crease appeared between his brows.

Vyn: …

MC: (Dr. Richter?)

He didn’t taste the wine like he did previously, instead putting the glass back down on the table.

Vyn: This wine is still disappointing.

Raphael: Is that so… I thought that after aging for so long, its flavor would have changed.

Vyn: Only wines of good quality will improve with age. Ordinary wines left for too long will only turn to vinegar.**

From his words and implications, he seemed to firmly believe that this wine was unpresentable.

MC: (So this wine is that bad… I really don’t have a talent for winetasting.)

Vyn turned to look at me.

Vyn: It’s getting late, I’ll send you back to your room to rest.

Vyn: Early to bed and early to rise; tomorrow we’re still making wine together.

Ready to deal the final blow, his blade hesitates to finish the job.

BAD END.

The Hope of Mankind had won. Darkness defeated; Light will still prevail.

The Warrior of Light form of Elidibus stared down at the crumpled form of a Raen female. Battered, bruised, bloodied, and knocked out. This woman, who had given himself and his deceased brethren so much trouble, was finally going to be put to the sword.

Listelle Viyrel will be no more; He would be free to continue his work of rejoining the shards.

As it should have been long ago.

However, at the same time, she...had been interesting. Just something about the mortal frame of hers sparked a familiarity in her. The mannerisms, the appearance, and her hobbies all reminded him of someone he couldn't remember. Just who...? Who could it be? It was there--at the back of his mind; Just out of reach for him to grasp. A millennia of lost memory would not help him.

The healer had pleaded multiple times that she wished to not fight him. That there had to be common ground amongst them somewhere, somehow. The times they had met in secret; the times he indulged her curiosity of the Ascians themselves. The fact that she had mourned over Emet-Selch's death so much still made him second-guess his choices.

Regardless, his duty came before anything. He had to stay the course for the good of this star, no matter the cost.

Elidibus approached the unconscious form of the downed Warrior of Dartkness; His blade lifted to just where he had to hit. Once she was dealt with, nothing else would get in their way. Listelle had been by far the biggest nuisance they had encountered for a long time. He would remedy that situation quite quickly.

To deal the final blow, the Emissary went to bring his sword's blade upon her neck.

....Except, it never met it's mark.

The tip of the blade was barely above the small mortal's neck. He had stopped himself from dealing the execution of this girl. No! It should have been easy. All Elidibus had to do was kill her. Nothing else mattered, right? Zodiark being reborn would be much, much easier, once she was dead.

His hand trembled violently as he tried again, which ended in the same result. The blade stopped above her neck once more. Frustration was all over his face. No, he couldn't do it. Why? Why did this woman have a hold on him?

Was it because she felt comfortable around him, despite being on opposite sides? Was it because he secretly hated the fact that he would subconsciously seek her out at times? The time where he comforted her, when she had pangs of pain, due to the Lightwardens' aether in her? The time where she burst out in tears after dealing with Zenos yae Galvus to free Ala Mhigo? So many little instances of their encounters....

Elidibus longed for her, despite the insistence to end her here and now.

No, he would not. He would not end her life. Not now, not today, not ever. She was too valuable to him.

Elidibus would find a way to keep her out of harm's way, but also to keep her from interfering. Listelle would live regardless of what their one, true god wanted. This is what the Emissary wanted for once in his lifetime.

He would make sure of it.

Only three more Rejoinings until the world would be whole again.

In a plane only the Emissary could access, there was a single, large crystal within the center of the room. A deep blue color that housed a familiar face. The Warrior of Light of the Source was trapped and in a deep slumber within the mineral substance.

Still the same as Elidibus remembered after putting her within this crystal stasis. To keep her safe from harm and the calamities that were brought on the Source. There were mortals that did try to stand up to him and his remaining brethren, but had fallen.

Soon, it would be safe for Listelle to exist. Exist for herself; For him. It seemed the one, true god didn't mind this. The Emissary had remembered a few things by now. The incomplete woman before him was Azem, or at least, the sundered version of her.

Ephine.... how could he have forgotten her? Such a bundle of energy. Always willing to help people, but also be too self-sacrificing. Her love for plant life and animals was a breath of fresh air for him. He had looked up to her when he had been welcomed into the Convocation. Including the fact she didn't want a volcano destroying a precious kind of grape. Which could be turned into a delicious wine to drink. So much about Ephine he loved and missed.

Despite this, he knew she had been against the summoning of Zodiark in the past. The fact that they used him made her even more upset. He had told Emet-Selch and Hythlodaeus to take care of her. They would find a way to fix this star, no matter what the cost. She'd see why he was doing this. For their people; For the world; For her.

Elidibus never saw Ephine again after that; Something that he regrets.

However, he would make that up, once the world was whole again. Start anew with Listelle, or Ephine, whatever she wanted to be called.

prompt:  Idk if you're taking prompts and I've literally never done this before, but I think you're great! I've been looking for witcher fics online, specifically jaskier whump, and I've noticed there's nothing about paralysis, maybe you could do something where jaskier eats a poisonous plant and gets paralysed (temporary)or maybe even infected with some poison or something then geralt has to carry him around and take care of him? You don't have to if u don't want to lol ☺️

Love this! Nice and fresh idea! (Also, I’ve never written paralysis before, and I’m not a doctor, so bear with me, lol)

Brief mentions of the no no berry fic! Also, while this fic is a stand-alone prompt, it’s also falling in line with my “a witcher in need, perhaps it’s destiny” series on ao3 where Jaskier and Geralt are navigating through their complicated relationship. 

Jaskier should have learned, he should have etched the lesson of his previous mistake to heart, but hunger’s a devil that toys with his mind and grabs at his stomach. It warps his surroundings, his vision growing too large and round to too small and curved, blurry images. Hunger has him feeling faint, walking across a rope bridge swaying over a canyon, and it brings forth hot desperation that he voices to Geralt over and over.

“Geralt, I’m famished,” Jaskier whines, voice dragging out each word as slow as his heavy footfalls, and Geralt, who’s been keeping a considerately slow pace only a few steps ahead of him, stops, turning with a tender frown that brings a furrow to his brow.

“I know,” he mutters softly, and Jaskier shuffles up to his side, groaning lowly deep within his throat when Geralt places a large hand to the small of his back. He pulls his focus to the steady warmth that radiates a hint of power through touch alone.

“We’ll stop soon,” Geralt reassures, eyes struggling to move from Jaskier’s thin, pale complexion to the forest surrounding them, to the tall, towering trees that hide the danger that doesn’t wish to be seen. “This spot isn’t safe.” He slides his hand up from Jaskier’s back to his shoulder, squeezing it tightly. “Do you think you can manage a little while more?”

Jaskier nods, the small tilt of his head bringing with it an unwanted bout of dizziness that has one hand curling around his stomach while the other blindly reaches for Geralt’s tunic, fingers clutching at the fabric, and Geralt’s growls his name, concern colored in his gruff tone.

“Jaskier,” his hand tightens around Jaskier’s shoulder, keeping him grounded. “Maybe you should ride Roach...”

“And suffer a head injury when I topple off of her?” Jaskier questions, swallowing around a dull ache of nausea. He breathes through his swimming vision until it steadies where he can bring a weary gaze toward Roach. “I don’t think so.” He’s slow to bring his eyes to Geralt’s narrow ones, and they speak silently for an endless moment, faded, tired blue eyes trying to hold their own against burning amber ones.

“If you’re sure,” Geralt finally says, and he starts forward, keeping closer to Jaskier, walking only two steps ahead of him, and he listens only to the staggering footsteps behind him, making sure they continue, looking back when they falter, until they reach a small clearing that he deems will have to be safe enough since he’s not sure how much longer Jaskier can remain upright. He’s quick to get Roach settled, and he only stops briefly before leaving in search of food to stare hard at Jaskier, who’s standing in the middle of the clearing, eyes distant, heavy, and glued to a tree.

“Jaskier?” Geralt starts toward him, one hand reaching out to him. “Why don’t you sit down?” He snakes an arm around Jaskier’s waist, guiding him to a tree he can lean against. “I won’t be gone long,” he promises, and Jaskier’s struggling to focus, only seeing Geralt’s lips moving.

He watches Geralt almost run into the forest, and he then he’s alone, and his hunger talks to him, a familiar dark voice in his ear, one that’s previously urged him to eat a poisonous berry. He tries to shake it away, but it’s louder than the wind around him, louder than the birds above him, and he moves to his feet without control, eyes falling to a bush a few steps across from him.

There are deep purple leaves littering the bush, but in his eyes, he sees plump, juicy grapes, and he stumbles to the bush, heavy bricks at his feet. He plucks one from the bush, and brings it to his lips, hesitating only for a moment as the blurred memories of cramps, dehydration, and a burning fever run through his mind, but then the voice is in his ear again, and he drops the leaf into his mouth.

Slowly, he chews the leaf, entire body rigid and on edge, but the leaf is faintly sweet, definitely no grape but still fighting off his hunger effectively. He plucks another, and another, crunching through a handful, lips curling into a smile with each one.

After his seventh one, he’s satisfied for now, able to wait for the meat Geralt will bring back. He turns on his heel, takes two steps back toward the tree he’s been leaning on, and then stops when icy tingles burn up and down his arms and legs. He shakes his arms out, hops from foot to foot, but the tingling grows until it suddenly fades to a piercing numbness that has his knees shaking. He tries to lift one hand but finds that he can’t, and then his knees give out and he crumples to the ground, arms and legs twisted abnormally.

Panic’s heavy against him as he tries desperately to move to no avail, and it’s the hot panic that has him screaming at the top of his lungs for Geralt, voice cracking, rough, but then Geralt’s breaking through the woods, dropping to his knees beside him.

“Jaskier.” Geralt’s hands are hovering over Jaskier’s body, eyes flicking across his listless limbs, falling to the tinge of purple coloring the tips of his fingers. “What did you eat?” He growls, fear morphing with anger as he drags Jaskier’s hand to his eyes.

“The bush,” Jaskier chatters, desperate fear bringing an uncomfortable chill to his dead limbs. He makes to point, but his arm refuses, and he swallows thickly, eyes following as Geralt moves toward the bush and plucks a single leaf off, bringing it in front of his eyes.

“Dark Willow,” Geralt groans, the leaf slipping from his finger as he slowly turns back to Jaskier. “Infamously known as the Purple Dead Limb.”

Jaskier wants to vomit. His stomach lurches, and he pushes his face into the ground and tries desperately to move, to arch his body upward, but he can’t.

“It temporarily seizes your body’s movements,” Geralt explains, pinching the bridge of his nose.

“Temporarily?” Jaskier asks, clinging to the single word with hope that burns in his chest. “It’s temporary?”

“Yes,” Geralt sighs, crouching beside Jaskier. He wants to scold Jaskier for his continuous recklessness, but there’s dark pain coloring Jaskier’s normally bright eyes, so he bites back any comments that may darken that gripping pain.

“There’s a town a few hours away,” he glances toward Roach, who’s tired after hours of walking, then back to Jaskier, who can do nothing but move his head. “You can’t support yourself on Roach, and she’s too tired to carry both of us.” He fights back the urge to sigh once more. “Are you in pain?”

“I can’t feel anything,” Jaskier whispers, and saying the words aloud bring hot tears to his eyes. Temporary or not, he’s terrified all the way to his core.

“I’m going to lift you,” Geralt explains, and he’s careful when he slips his hands under Jaskier, moving slowly, frown deepening at the dead weight. It takes long, cautious maneuvering until he’s got Jaskier on his back. He’s supporting Jaskier’s legs, and he’s managed to swing Jaskier’s arms over his shoulders. Jaskier’s forehead is pressed against his neck, and he can feel the warm tears.

“Jaskier, you will be alright,” Geralt says, and Jaskier sniffles behind him, holding to the hope that’s thick in Geralt’s voice.

“I’m scared,” he mutters, voice cracking, and Geralt only quickens his steps, mumbling a soft “I know” as he starts toward the town.

The walk is long, more so because they’ve been travelling in unsettling silence, Jaskier far too quiet at his back. He tries to spark a conversation, but Jaskier’s replies are short, lacking any heart, so he gives up after a while, focusing instead on the unsteady breaths against his neck.

He’s thankful when they reach the town, but he’s forced to clench his teeth at the snide remarks that pass them by as they enter the inn.

“One room,” he requests, struggling to reach into his pocket for his coins. He ignores the arched brows the inn-keep flashes his way as she twirls an old key around her finger.

“Be easy on your pet,” she laughs, handing over the key as Geralt slides a small satchel of coins her way, and Geralt growls low in his throat, glaring to the woman before he starts up the steps to the room.

He carefully drops Jaskier onto the bed, moving to undo his shoes. “Can I get you anything?” He asks quietly, fingers working through the laces of Jaskier’s boots.

“No,” Jaskier mumbles. “I think I’ll just sleep--”

“--Jaskier,” Geralt tries when Jaskier squeezes his eyes shut. He finds Jaskier’s hand, cups it with his larger one, and sighs when Jaskier doesn’t react because he still can’t feel it. “Jaskier, open your eyes.”

Jaskier does, and a single tear slips down his cheek. Geralt leans over him, thumbing the tear away with a touch Jaskier can feel. “I told you that you will be alright, so why are you crying?”

“I just...” Jaskier sniffles lightly, wishing to will away the flood pooling in his eyes. “I just want to sleep,” he whispers, not saying that he’s sorry for being an imbecile, that he’s sorry for worrying Geralt, that he’s sorry for not learning from his past mistakes, and that he’s sorry for always being a nuisance to Geralt. He would just rather sleep because if he’s asleep, he can’t feel the fear and guilt swirling into a pit in stomach. His eyes slip closed, and he can feel Geralt watching him for minutes before he sighs and slips off the bed, bringing the blanket to Jaskier’s chin before exiting the room.

Geralt leaves to get Roach settled in a stable and purchase food to bring back to the room, and when he returns, Jaskier’s actually asleep, a deep rise and fall of his chest a clear indication. He unlaces his own boots, pulls his shirt over his head, and climbs into the bed, muscles practically screaming their thanks from a too-long journey with a partiuclar bard on his back.

He rolls to his side, eyes growing heavy as they watch Jaskier’s chest swell and deflate in a steady rhythm until he slips into a deep sleep.

Jaskier comes to slowly, and he brings a hand to his face to rub at his blurry eyes, hand freezing inches before his face as his eyes shoot open. Slowly, he wiggles his fingers with ease, and then he wiggles his toes, feeling the tips brush against the soft blanket covering him. Relief is a heavy pressure in his chest, and he puffs out a sigh he’s been unconsciously holding in as he carefully slips from the bed, eager to work his fingers against the strings of his lute.

He’s a little shaky on his legs, feeling almost as if a new born deer running through a vast, open field for the first time, as he snags his lute. He quietly slips back into the bed, back pressed against the tall, wooden headboard, and he starts plucking at the strings, a somber, soft melody that seems to play itself at the touch of his fingers.

“How I wish to say how I truly feel. Oh, I’m sorry to my Witcher. I should call my leave, no longer in need.. Oh, I’m sorry to my Witcher.”

“I miss that,” Geralt mutters, voice thick with sleep, and Jaskier’s fingers freeze, gaze whipping toward Geralt.

“Though, I could do with different lyrics.”

“Geralt,” Jaskier starts, sighing around the name, “I’m--”

“--No,” Geralt interrupts, pushing up on one elbow. “I’m sorry,” he says. “I keep letting it slip my mind that your body cannot handle what mine can.”

“Because I’m weak--”

“--Because you’re human,” Geralt growls, sitting up fully. He cups Jaskier’s cheek, leaning in close until his lips gently brush against Jaskier’s. “You are not weak.” He mutters around the kiss, slowly pulling away. “Any man would have completely unraveled today, but you held it together, and that’s admirable.”

“I cried,” Jaskier reminds him, a small arch to his brow, and Geralt shrugs.

“But you came back from it.”

Jaskier turns back to his lute, and he starts strumming a faster melody, one that’s a little unsteady, but one that brings a smile to Geralt’s lips as he falls back against his pillow.

“Make this one about you,” he says, a half-smile pulling at his lips when Jaskier tilts his head at him. “A song about how you will never ever eat any berries or plants or anything you don’t know about again.”

Disco Lights (full short story)

The helicopters are swarming everywhere. The people from the news are all around, waiting, recounting the same information again and again to new viewers as they come; the door will be opened in ten minutes. Nine minutes. Eight, seven, six, five...

The door had been found a week before by a demolition crew working on an old parking garage. It had been set inside the wall, under three or four inches of concrete. The original builders were contacted, the blueprints procured, but as far as anyone knew the door should not be there.

Everyone was prepared to ignore it. Break it down, they said, let’s get on with our jobs. But there were the sounds, and the lights through the crack. Anyone who got within ten feet of the door keeled over in pain. There were headaches, stomach aches. Dental fillings cracked, eyes began to burn, hands trembled.

The door was marked as a health and safety hazard, and a hazmat crew was brought in to deal with it. One of them made it all the way up to the door and actually touched the handle. He woke up in the hospital later, having suffered a mild heart attack, and claimed to have heard voices telling him not to open it.

Open it? How could anyone open it? There was just concrete behind it, wasn’t there?

Someone had the idea of sticking a camera in through the crack below the door, where the lights came from. The camera failed almost immediately. All it managed to capture was a single dark frame, smeared across the middle by a vaguely human form.

After that everyone took a big step back. Word had started to spread about “the door” and people came to see it. Civilians at first, then news agencies. Finally, two days before the door was opened, the government showed up on the scene and barred everyone from entering. For their own good, they said. But they recognized the need of the masses to see what lay beyond the door, and set up live cameras for the “grand opening,” as one reporter put it with a smirk on his face.

What might be behind the door? Nothing, some said. Just some Christmas lights and a set of speakers blasting out weird noises. Maybe some sort of microwave device that messed you up when you got too close. Just a weird prank by the builders, maybe by some disgruntled person who had quit right afterward and disappeared.

The cameras were set up. Four people stood there, ten feet from the door. Medical personnel were on standby, ready for anything.

“If one of us suddenly explodes,” said one of the openers, “cut the cameras, alright?”

They approached the door. At eight feet the woman on the right started to feel it, even through her lead suit. Just a weird sort of feeling, like you get when going through a loop on a roller coaster.

As they got closer they all felt it. Waves of something hitting them. There were the sounds, and the lights, stabbing out from under the door.

“Opening in ten... nine...”

Thus went the countdown, and the openers kept going. Four of them, fighting a sudden and extreme sensation of illness and foreboding. They did their best, and reached the door at the count of two. They lingered for five or six more seconds. Someone reached out tentatively for the handle, then let their hand fall back down.

“I can’t,” he said. “You do it.”

The woman on the right seemed to think he was talking about her. With a spasmodic flick of her hand she grasped the handle, turned it, and pulled.

It was all darkness beyond. The city followed into darkness an hour later. But for several days afterward, there were screams as the last of them died.

They should not have opened the door.

Four days after, a man named Lonnie Howell was crouched at the foot of an escalator in a department store. He was ranging far right now, way too far; his shelter was six blocks away, six long and shadowy blocks. He had to wait here, staring out through the huge windows at the front of the store, and pick his time to run.

The wraiths kept going by. Invisible flying men, who cast a shadow of dancing rainbow lights. That was the only way to see them. Their shadow.

The wraiths went past, flying along the street, lights curving up and over cars and bus stops. They were stalking the dark city, seeking out the final survivors. For all Lonnie knew, he might be the last.

Maybe it would be good to get out of the city. Maybe not. Lonnie had climbed up some of the taller buildings around, getting onto the roofs and looking out. All dark beyond the city, too. Even now, at about eleven in the morning, just darkness. Except for the wraiths.

Lonnie hadn’t seen one for a little while. He’d been timing them. It seemed like one passed by every ten minutes on average. So he would wait for the next one, let it go by, wait a little bit longer, then make a dash for it. It could work; it had worked before.

Here came the lights now, flashing and blinking down the street. Lonnie froze, pulling back a little behind the potted plant he was crouched at. He twitched a little, and the cans in his pack rattled against each other. The wraith kept going. Lonnie counted ten Mississippi, got up, and booked it.

The cans rattled and rattled. They sounded ridiculously loud, especially when he got out onto the street. Lonnie weaved around cars, hopped over downed bicycles, skirted the messy remains of his fellow men. Back to sanctuary. Eventually, they would find him even there, but maybe he could live a bit longer. Maybe he could even think of a plan.

They all screamed when the wraiths got to them. Every last one screamed their heads off, as if that would save them. Lonnie bet the wraiths liked to see fear in their victims, and so he had decided that, whenever they got him, he would clamp his mouth shut and just act all bored. That would teach them.

Actually, no it wouldn’t, but Lonnie wasn’t going to die that other way.

There was a peculiar twilight in the city. Objects were only visible at a distance of ten feet. It helped that Lonnie had sharp reflexes, or else he’d be tripping and falling four times a minute. Plus he had traveled this way a few times, and sort of had a feel for it. Had it really only been four days?

Lonnie let himself go into his thoughts. It was either that or lose his mind with fear, alone like he was on the dark street. He started to imagine what he might eat tonight. He’d found a can of pasta sauce, and he already had a few packages of instant noodles. They were Asian flavor, but he could dispense with the seasoning packets and do a sort of spaghetti instead. There was that little bottle of grape juice, too. He could pretend it was wine. There were liquor stores, but those were farther away than he really dared to go.

Here was the laundromat, and the little restaurant across the street advertising four mini burgers for two dollars, plus a beer or a soft drink for an extra fifty cents. Good deal, Lonnie thought. The landmarks meant he was close to his hideout.

He slowed down a little. The road right up here was almost impassible; a bus had tipped over and a bunch of cars had crashed trying to get around it. Lonnie gripped his pack tight with one hand and, with the other, began to scale the cars. How fast could they have been going to end up all piled on each other like this?

At the top he paused and looked around the street ahead of him. Empty and dark, no screams to indicate another survivor gone and a wraith nearby. Just below was the little staircase leading down to a basement video rental place. That was his spot. Home sweet home. He started to climb down.

Weird, he thought. Maybe his eyes were just adjusting, but the street seemed kind of bright now. And maybe a little colorful.

Lonnie froze again. A cold, creeping feeling went up his spine. He looked back slowly, and saw the disco lights coming behind him. The wraith was still a block away, and Lonnie was hidden behind a car. But that didn’t matter. If he was on the street, the wraith would find him.

He had a couple of cars to go down yet, and that was a noisy affair. And also the cans in his pack. Lonnie made a quick decision. Caution and quiet be damned, he was running for it. Speed over stealth.

He stuck out a leg and leapt. The street rushed up out of blackness. He could only really see it a few inches before he hit, and had no way of timing his tuck and roll. And it turned out there was some object there, dark and hidden. His foot hit it and folded over. Pain burst in his ankle. Lonnie tried to stand up but his foot wasn’t having it. The lights were getting brighter. They were halfway down the block, maybe more. Brighter and brighter still. The wraith was swooping lower now. It knew someone was around.

Lonnie dragged himself along, as fast as he possibly could. He reached the stairs and peered down them. Fifteen steps of cold, hard concrete. Screw it. He grabbed hold of the railing and threw himself down. Rolling, crashing, flipping. His knee slammed against one of the supports for the banister, and the back of his head slapped down hard on one of the steps. His hand twisted under his back. He felt a pop and a rush of hot pain in his shoulder, and a throbbing as his hurt ankle jostled around.

Act bored when they got him. That had been his idea. He forgot all about it now. He was seeing stars, unable to tell what way was up. He was already at the bottom of the stairs, but he still felt like he was spinning around. All he saw was disco lights, dancing around him.

He screamed. And that was the end of Lonnie Howell, last man in the city.

prologue

"Do they look like they are in love?"

"I can't tell Black, your greasy hair is in the way."

A small gasp echoed the broom cabinet Sirius and I stood in, his wide eyes burning into my skull. The only light that flooded the cabinets was from the small crack in the door, the perfect line of sight to watch Remus and Myles Wilcox flirt.

Or at least hopefully flirting.

"I washed my hair this morning Bennett, I used vanilla shampoo," Sirius whispered-yelled in my ear, taking a small bit of hair and dangling it in my face.

"I'm going to kill you."

"They would catch you."

"Did you forget my best friend is Cherry Brown?"

I kept my hands on either side of the crack while turning to look at the boy over the man 's shoulder. The small crack of light shone across one of his eyes and half his mouth, almost something out of a piece of art.

"You're right, I'm so sorry my queen."

Sirius bowed his head to him, lifting his head back up to bang it on the top of the cabinet. I jumped, turning back to the two boys flirting barely a few feet away from us. They didn't seem to react, still carry on a conversation like before.

"Black if you don't get your-"

I gasped this time as I walked Myles fingers delicately placed a small yellow flower behind Remus' ear, the shit eating smirk on his face showed that whatever they were talking about had to be flirty.

"Did he punch him?"

I let my hand fill behind me, feeling around until I found Sirius tie. I dragged his face to hover right over my shoulder, moving my head slightly so he could see the scene before me.

"Godric (Y/N), I think we actually did something."

Sirius turned his head, his nose bumping against mine as he looked at me with his grey eyes. They held pure awe as they burned into my own, the iris of his eye was blown impeccably and his thin lips were parted somewhat.

"We got good aim Black."

"Huh?"

I rolled my eyes and his eyebrow lifted, pushing him slightly so I was looking back out the small crack again.

"You seduced me for your spot back!"

I kick my leg back, my small flats running into his shin. As soon as I began pulling my foot back to the spot on the wooden floor I felt two hands wrap around my ankle.

"Nope."

He pulled back, hard. I felt my front crash onto the floor causing brooms to fall on top of Sirius and I, splinters from the floor and the brooms breaking my skin.

"Oh shit'" Sirius' small laughs filled the cabinet, his deep voice made everything sound breathy.

"Sleep with one eye open tonight Black, Cherry is really good at breaking into things."

I heard the door of the cabinet swing open, light flooding my back while I hid my face in my arm .

Please don't be Remus, please don't be Remus.

"You didn't tell me you two were shagging!"

I looked up to see James Potter looking at us both with such wide eyes his glasses were slowly falling to the tip of his nose.

"We aren't Prongs," Sirius stepped from the small shape, finally allowing me to untangle myself from the brooms laid across my back.

"We were spying on Remus."

I felt a few brooms lift off my back, enough wait was gone so I could turn to my side. Sirius stood beside me, passing brooms to James while pulling more from off me.

"Why? Does Remus hate us now?"

James looked between Sirius and I panicked, dropping the few brooms that were held in his grip.

"No, we set him up with Myles Wilcox," Sirius set the few brooms against the door and held a hand out for me, my hand easily slipping into his and he pulled me from the floor of the broom closet.

"Oh, well how'd it go?"

"Fabulous if I do say so myself."

"And she does say so herself," Sirius grabbed my shoulders and did a jumpy little dance from behind me.

He likes to call it his "I'm right and you aren't" dance.

"Well isn't that a miracle, I didn't even know they liked each other," James picked up the few brooms on the floor and shoved them into the broom closet messily.

"We didn't either, we're just really good at seeing the signs."

Sirius reaching his hand from my shoulder from beside me, his hand out waiting for a high-five, which I happily gave.

"Imagine if you were both professionals," James started walking backward, the Great Hall quickly filling up for dinner for the night.

"We'd be rich."

We all slipped into the Great Hall, I quickly departed and left for the Ravenclaw table. Amira sat at the end of the long table with a pile of papers laid before her.

"Mi?"

"(Y/N)!"

She bounced in her seat slightly, he curled following suit as she looked up at me with a large smile.

"What's with the papers?"

I took the seat across from her, picking up a paper but she quickly reached across and grabbing the paper from my hands.

"I got out that stupid writer block."

She looked back down at her journal and carried on writing, her food pushed to the other side of the table.

"Mi you gotta eat."

"I can do that when I'm dead," she waved me off and continued the dramatic writing spell she had fallen into.

"You actually can't Mi, that's the whole point."

She didn't even acknowledge my words, her pen gliding across the page with ease as she wrote about the world within her brain.

I rolled my eyes and grabbed the plant, shoving a fork full of mash potatoes and grabbing a napkin with the other hand. I kicked Mi in the shin, causing her to look up at me while one hand went to rub her shin.

"Say ah."

Mi rolled her eyes but did it anyways, looking at me with her best version of her mad face. I moved the fork to her mouth, her quickly swallowing the food and picking back up the pen and writing.

"Fuck that."

I looked to my right, Cherry long black hair caught my eye as she huffed from beside me.

"What happened to you?"

"That boy from the other night though he would tell me what I can and can't wear. Hell he decided he didn't wanna wear a condom so I can wear my mini skirts.

Cherry turned, diving her legs under the table and picking from Mi plate. Her green and silver scarf made her stand out against the Ravenclaw colors but no one paid no mind, this happened a lot more than most like to say.

"Why are you spoon feeding Amira?"

"She refuses to eat unless and until she grows an extra arm so she can write, so she grew an extra arm."

Cherry smirked and turned to me, wrapping her two arms around my shoulders.

"We wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for you."

I laughed and carefully pushed Cherry off, picking up more food on the fork and shoving it at Mi.

"I was inspired by (Y/N) and Sirius' little plan to write a story like mythology but not mythology," Amira spoke as she took the few peas that were on the fork.

"Oh yeah, how did that go by the way?"

"Fabulous, Sirius and I would make perfect cupid's," I smiled proudly at both the girls while grabbing a few fruit from the plate and popping them into my mouth.

"Well if you both need another person's life to play with, I'm free this week," Cherry plucked a grape from my finger and shoved it in inbetween her red lips.

"James Potter probably always had that spot filled."

Mi and Cherry looked at one another at the same time before nodding. I suddenly realized how many people needed some guidance.

Maybe Sirius and I could be that guidance?

"Guys, I think you're onto something."
