George I of Great Britain
George I of Great Britain (r. 1714-1727) succeeded the last of the Stuart monarchs, Queen Anne of Great Britain (r. 1702-1714) because he was Anne's nearest Protestant relative. The House of Hanover secured its position as the new ruling family by defeating several Jacobite rebellions which supported the old Stuart line.
King George may have struggled with both English and the English, often preferring his attachments in Germany, but his reign was a relatively stable one. His greatest legacy was as a patron of the arts, in particular, his support of musicians like Handel and such lasting cultural institutions as the Royal Academy of Music. He was succeeded by his son George II of Great Britain (r. 1727-1760).
Succession: The House of Hanover
The Glorious Revolution of 1688 saw the end of the reign of the male Stuarts and placed William, Prince of Orange on the throne as William III of England (r. 1689-1702) with his wife, the daughter of the exiled James II of England (r. 1685-1688), made Mary II of England (r. 1689-1694). Mary's sister became the ruling monarch in 1702 as Anne, Queen of Great Britain. When Anne died, so ended the Stuart royal line, which had begun with Robert II of Scotland (r. 1371-1390).
Queen Anne outlived her husband Prince George of Denmark (1653-1708) by six years; she died at the age of 49 on 1 August 1714 at Kensington Palace after suffering two strokes. Queen Anne had had many children, but all died in infancy. The greatest hope for an heir had been William, Duke of Gloucester (b. 1689), but he died in 1700, aged 12. Anne's official heirs, the Hanoverian family, were selected as such in the 1701 Act of Settlement.
The Hanovers were connected to the British royal line as descendants of Elizabeth Stuart (d. 1662), daughter of James I of England (r. 1603-1625) and brief Queen of Bohemia through her husband Frederick V of the Palatinate. The chosen successor – although she was not permitted by Anne to even visit England – was Elizabeth Stuart's daughter Sophia (l. 1630-1714), wife of the Duke of Brunswick and Elector of Hanover (a small principality in Germany the size of Yorkshire). Sophie of Hanover was Queen Anne's nearest relation of the Protestant faith, a vital consideration given that Parliament had already passed a law forbidding a Catholic to take the throne. For this reason, more than 50 other claimants to the throne had been deemed unsuitable. When Sophia died in 1714, her son, George Ludwig, took over the role of heir apparent to the British throne.

On This Day In Royal History . Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee procession through London. . 22 June 1897 . 👑 ‘No one ever, I believe, has met with such an ovation as was given to me, passing through those six miles of streets… so the crowds were quite indescribable, and their enthusiasm truly marvellous and deeply touching. The cheering was quite deafening, and every face seemed to be filled with real joy’ wrote Queen Victoria following her Diamond Jubilee procession through London on 22 June 1897 in glorious sunshine, popularly dubbed ‘the Queen’s weather’. . . . #DiamondJubilee #QueenVictoria #Victorian #VictorianEra #HouseofHanover #HerMajesty #Historiclondon #VisitLondon #Royalty #Monarchy #History #BritishMonarchy #GodSaveTheQueen #StPaulsCathedral #D22Jun #Royalhistory #Historic #London #Londonhistory #Stpauls #StPaulsCathedral #Thequeen #Victoria #Monarchy #BuckinghamPalace #Historyfacts 📷 © National Portrait Gallery, London #historyinpictures #otd #onthisday #Vintagephotograph #Vintagephoto #vintagephotography (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQbNRPxDdyy/?utm_medium=tumblr

#Repost @jemappellejeff ・・・ A favorite pediment with exquisite ornamentation, found in the Palace’s entrance to the ballroom (perspective is facing south towards the main entrance to the palace) with a stunning GR II cypher; as stated in a previous post, note that GRII uses a ‘2, ‘ instead of the Roman numeral. He was one of a small number of British monarchs to do so. The Ballroom Wing, of course, was added to the palace during his reign. Ironic that his cypher is surrounded by his grandson GRIII’s favorite color, Prussian Blue. George IV of Great Britain
George IV of Great Britain (r. 1820-1830) was the fourth of the Hanoverian monarchs. He first reigned as Prince Regent from 1811 for his mad father George III of Great Britain (r. 1760-1820). George IV was an unpopular monarch for his many love affairs and overspending, but he was a great patron of the arts and architecture. He was succeeded by his younger brother William IV of Great Britain (r. 1830-1837).
The House of Hanover
The royal house of Hanover had taken over the British throne in 1714 following the death of Queen Anne of Great Britain (r. 1702-1714), who had no children. The Hanoverians were also electors of Hanover, a small principality in Germany, and so both George I of Great Britain (r. 1714-1727) and George II of Great Britain (r. 1727-1760) were very much Germans ruling in Britain. George III was the first Hanoverian to be born in Britain and to speak English as his first language, and he was, consequently, more popular with his subjects.

On This Day In Royal History . 19 July 1821 . King George IV coronation . . ◼ When George III died in 1820, the Prince Regent, then aged 57, ascended the throne as George IV, with no real change in his powers. He had been the Prince Regent following the decline in his father’s mental illness for eleven years. . The New kings lifestyle was extraordinary & extravagant in every way. He had enjoyed a huge number of mistresses in his earlier days; his gluttonous love of food & drink was proverbial; & his exotic taste in art & architecture had already produced England’s most flamboyant building – the Royal Pavilion in Brighton. . Then came the coronation possibly the most extravagant in history. Seven supporters, eldest sons of peers, were needed to uphold the nine yards of his heavy & magnificent train of crimson velvet, decorated with golden stars. Beneath the train he wore a tight-fitting white satin suit in sixteenth-century style, with a neo-classical mantle of blue velvet, embroidered in gold & lined with ermine. On his head he flaunted a black Spanish hat decked with white ostrich feathers & a heron’s plume. Curls of his wig fell coquettishly over his forehead. . The painter Benjamin Haydon was present to see the king’s entry & wrote a memorable description: ‘Something rustles, & a being buried in satin, feathers & diamonds rolls gracefully into his seat. The room rises with a sort of feathered, silken thunder. Plumes wave, eyes sparkle, glasses are out, mouths smile & one man becomes the prime object of attraction to thousands. The way in which the King bowed was really royal. As he looked towards the peeresses & foreign ambassadors, he showed like some gorgeous bird of the east’. . . . #Onthisdayinhistory #thisdayinhistory #theyear1821 #coronation #d19jul #kinggeorgeIV #GeorgeIV #HouseofHanover #History #BritishMonarchy #RoyalHistory #Portraitpainting #historyinpictures #Britishhistory #Britishroyals #otd #Britishroyalfamily #Britishroyalty #Westminster #Westminsterabbey #Royals #GreatBritain #Historic #HistoryFacts #onthisday #Royalhistory #Theking #onthisday #London 🎨 Royal Collection Trust/© Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 2021. Queen Victoria
Queen Victoria of Great Britain (r. 1837-1901) was one of the most loved of all Britain's monarchs. Her longevity, devotion to her role as figurehead of an empire, and recovery from the death of her beloved husband Prince Albert won her a unique status as the ever-present symbol of 19th-century Britain, an era of tremendous political, industrial, and social changes.
The last of the British Hanoverian monarchs, Victoria reigned for 63 years. She weathered the storms of life – outliving three of her children – and survived assassination attempts, family scandals, gossip over her relationship with her beloved servant John Brown, and reformers who wanted to topple the Crown. Britain and the British Empire would never be quite as great again when Victoria died in January 1901. Queen Victoria was succeeded by her eldest son who became Edward VII of Great Britain (r. 1901-1910).
