Post-war idea: Hork-Bajir tourism. Not "People going to Yellowstone to see the Hork-Bajir" like the books mention, but "Hork-Bajir traveling the world to see all the trees" tourism. I think they'd love the Cork trees of Iberia in particular. Circling back to the first point - I think I understand why the Hork-Bajir are in Yellowstone. The massive canyons and geothermal activity in the park probably looks a lot like their homeworld's rifts!

How do you think the Yeerks kept their Hork-Bajir fed between the invasion of their homeworld and the Earth invasion? The one world we're sure that they invaded was the Taxxon homeworld, which was supposed to be mostly desert, likely with minimal trees and tree bark. If the Yeerks really would end up destroying the natural beauty of planets that they conquered like Ax says in Book 4, I can't imagine feeding all the Hork-Bajir would be easy. Unlike Taxxons, who eat anything.

All right, so. You can get up to 12 square yards of mulch from Home Depot for $560 in today's dollars, which is $285 in 1997 dollars. We don't know exactly how many hork-bajir-controllers are left after Alloran's ethnic cleansing, but from Visser I'm guessing it's a few hundred to a couple thousand. Of those, not every one is posted on Earth, so I'm willing to bet there are only ~1000 hork-bajir on Earth.

How much does a hork-bajir eat? Well, an Earth animal that's about 7' long and herbivorous — I'm going with okapi — eats about 35lbs of plant matter a day. A cubic yard of mulch weighs about 600lbs, according to Home Depot. So 1 cubic yard of mulch is about 17 days' food for one hork-bajir, or 1 day's food for 17. Which means you could get 204 days' food (12*17) out of $285 in 1997.

If there are 1000 hork-bajir, then you'll need 5 of those 12-yd shipments a day, which comes out to $1425 in then-dollars, $2802 in now-dollars. UNESCO says that cheap bulk meals for humans can be calculated at $3 a meal or $9 a day with U.S. ingredients, meaning it'd cost a nonprofit ~$9000 a day to feed 1000 humans. So if feeding a human costs about $9 a day and feeding a hork-bajir costs about $2.75 a day in today's money, then I'd say they're probably feeding the hork-bajir just fine. I'd even venture that they're spending more on the "grilled chicken, roast potatoes, steamed broccoli" (Visser) the humans get than on their hork-bajir.

Hear me outs are particularly difficult for me to choose due to my aro/ace-ness. However, I would have to go for the Hork-Bajir from the Animorphs book series.

Accepted! I find them sufficiently non-human, despite being ripped. i am not familiar enough to judge on personality, charisma, or audience sympathy.

And don't worry about it, I'm mostly rating these on three fronts: audience likeability, romancibility, and humanity. All of these are on a sliding scale, but the more likeable (ex: a main character), human (ex: ripped and thin), and romancible (ex: married (audience is already open to the possibility of them being in a relationship of any kind)) the character is the more basic the "hear me out".

I think the more you have to defend a hear me out the better it is, not necessarily how attractive the character (or thing) is or isnt.

And like someone who’s read the entire Animorphs series multiple times I said, “Hork-Bajir more like.” (That’s the name of one of the alien species).

... So did everyone who doesn't think hork-bajir are Blackcoded just missed the book that directly paralleled the free hork-bajir to Black freedmen/escaped slaves down to the parallel story having a Toby humansona who was a well spoken and 'unnervingly intelligent' Black man?

(But also how the examples of hork-bajir supposedly being unintelligent being shit like they speak broken English, they have a tradition of oral history and story telling, some shit that literally just Indigenous coding (granted the 3 separate racist things in the books about Indigenous groups I'm not surprised), them not knowing shit cause no one explains shit to them, etc.)

But yes, the hork-bajir are Black-coded. And I think it's wild that thus far I've only personally encountered like two other Black tumblr users insisting that they aren't. I don't know why, the Animorphs book series is just kinda racist towards a bunch of groups and the writers aren't very good and tend to be pretty obvious about the parallels and metaphors and shit they're using even if they're bad ideas to do.

Andalite tourist (lazy version): Don a headband with blue stalk eyes, and carry around a Krispy Kreme box.

Andalite tourist (hardcore version): Paint your entire body blue, have an inflatable second set of legs and tail attached to your butt, and attach the tail blade to a wristband so that you can swing it around by waving your arm.

Animorph (lazy version): Put on bike shorts, take off shoes.

Animorph (hardcore version): Exactly match Rachel's preferred cut and color of leotard. Wear brown fur boots and gloves, then use body paint on your arms and legs to make it look like they're transitioning into a morph.

Yeerk (lazy version): Borrow your friend's The Sharing shirt.

Yeerk (hardcore version): Shave your head, and paint your scalp with the illusion of a window looking in on your brain with a slug wrapped around it. Then borrow your friend's The Sharing shirt.
