Hiii! Well shucks, thank you so much!!

I’m actually in the process of trying to fix my same face syndrome, so you and I are definitely learning together right now haha! I will try my best just to explain my usual process for my style!

Since I draw them so often, I’ll use Carrie Fischer and Mark Hamill!

I start with the face shape, I usually focus on the jaw line and forehead shape. I think a really distinct feature on faces is where your eyebrows sit above your eyes. Usually if I get that right, the character looks more like themselves.

After shaping the face, I usually start with eyes. I start taking a few more liberties here, with eyelash shape and how big they are. The eyebrows and eyes is where I put a lot of their personality.

Next I do the nose. I really love drawing noses, but they’re still a bit of a struggle for me. For me, the bridge of the nose has always been important to creating a character. With the nose (especially mark hamill’s) I like to add a few more lines to give it definition.

Okay back to the top! I go back for the eyebrows! Recently, I’ve been deciding to change these up, making them a bit more like the person I’m referencing. Eyebrows is where the expression is made in my opinion, this is where I get the right vibes for the drawing. I like adding as many wrinkles as I need to get the expression just right. My style may be simple, but lines are my best friend!

Next is the mouth. This is a part I don’t add too many lines to, they’re pretty simple in my style. I usually try to follow the lip shape I bit; another thing that adds a lot of similarity to the face.

Next I do the hair, I usually do it in sections, seeing how each part affects the next. I then make the hair too big because who wants flat hair?? no one.

Finally I just go back around adding some defining lines/final adjustments, making sure the face pops a bit!

And that’s really it for me, my style is pretty inconsistent, but I hope this was a little helpful!!

Do you have any art tips for beginner artists?

hi! i'll do my best to list the most useful ones for me from the top of my head! but if you're asking about something specific, lmk too!

always use references! this is 100% the fastest way to improve quickly! and don't forget if you're posting artworks using references, to always ask for permission if needed and to credit the reference! here's a very good post with links to various art tutorials and references :) try to do things out of your comfort zone!

i remember my sister drilling this into my head as a kid lmao: if you're going to draw people, make it a habit to draw the whole body, not just a face or bust. this way you can improve drawing the face and body at the same rate, rather than perfect the face and have like. a shoddy body HAHAHA (<- speaking from experience - my sister warned me but i still did not listen) here's an example from when i was 12 lol i went so hard on the eyes but my anatomy wasn't great so the drawing looks kind of goofy

if i'm being honest nothing has really changed even now HAHAHA you can still tell i spend too much time on the faces and neglect my anatomy studies a lot 🥲

3. don't worry too much about building a signature art style if you're a beginner! experiment and imitate art styles that you like, and it'll eventually develop into something you're comfortable with

4. speaking of art styles, Naoki Saito-sensei does very in-depth art videos for people looking to develop and improve their art, and he covers a variety of different topics! the link i provided is for his new YouTube account, since his first one was unrightfully terminated :( since it's new, there aren't a lot of videos up yet but he'll be re-uploading all his old ones soon

5. this video by tppo is also a useful tutorial/explanation for style breakdowns, using Mika Pikazo-sensei's artworks! also another good reference for building art and colouring styles

6. unless you're going for a specific art style, try not to use black colours for shading. Instead, try using a darker version of your base colour with the hue slightly adjusted. it's a little difficult to explain so i made a tiny diagram underneath:

it makes the colours pop a lot! Kurahana Chinatsu-sensei and Akiakane-sensei are really good at doing this 😭💖 that can also apply to lineart! but again, only if you're going for this kind of colourful art style :') do what feels right to you!

7. lastly try to enjoy drawing! if you do what you enjoy, learning and improving will come so much easier to you :) i can understand the urgency to improve (it's like my default state of mind 🥲) but if you keep focusing on that, drawing will eventually just start to overwhelm and frustrate you. try to combat it by doing something self-indulgent! i like to draw my ocs whenever i start getting burnt out :')

8. actually i lied this is the last one!! never give up!! it's so easy to feel bad or frustrated about your art no matter where you are in your art journey, so what i like to do to try and fight that is to look at my old art and compare the improvements! here's one of the earliest oc drawings i could find from my childhood vs my most recent oc drawing :pensive:

i think i talked about this in an ask before but adding on to that, i really recommend trying to draw hair before facial features like eyes. at least for me, it helps me understand the curves and perspective of how the face should be laid out, and then i can add eyes/nose/mouth whatever to go along with that

thinking about how the face curves w/ perspective and angles means features like eyes and the mouth especially will shift with different angles

again i also recommend using refs as much as possible, it helps me understand how to place features and stuff so that way i get used to how to draw them :D

out of curiosity, you seem to switch between digital and traditional art :D which, the art itself, absolutely insanely stunning and gorgeous, however maintaining such a strong style is SOOO hard, I rly struggle, any tips? x

woah thank you so much!!!😭 to be honest I mostly switch between traditional and digital because I'm not at home 90% of the time and I am very inspiration driven so I always bring a sketchbook with me everywhere (so a lot of style stability is really just muscle memory), but what's really helped me was getting a brushpen that felt like my digital lineart brush. and same goes for styles with thin lines: getting a nice, thin black pen.

also you will feel less unsure with traditional/digital (whichever is not your main medium) if you just... keep switching to it. And I even got a life proof that it works: my friend was a digital-only artist most of her life and whenever I handed her a piece of paper to sketch something she would get incredibly stressed. however, we've been getting out to a coffee shop to draw our silly ocs together for a lot of years now, and even though she didn't switch to traditional fully, she feels much more comfortable with it and even insists we draw instead of doing something else sometimes.

and, after all, I think my last tip would be to not worry about your style so much. a few years back I fell into a hole of struggling with a style that was too cartoony for what I wanted out of it. and I kept pushing, it being not very fun to stylize things and just mostly stressful to draw. my best decision was changing it up, honestly. whenever I'm not satisfied with my art style - I change it. why stick to it if it's no fun? and how will you find out if you like to draw something in some style if you don't try it?

Been seeing all this drayton angst and im EATING IT UP!!!!! gamefreak was really cooking when they put the guy from opelucid "blasted with a giant ice beam" city in the snow biome of the terrarium, in a previous post you said he'd be at BBA at the time of the attack but what if he wasn't? What if he was stuck in the frozen town? (maybe trapped in his frozen over house)

He chose to station himself in the polar biome as exposure therapy because oh boy! he does not do well in the cold despite what he says about it not bothering him

I imagine he had a similar response to the cold/ice types like anime!iris does but of course less humorously and more traumatically!

He'd def mask his fear of the cold/ice types w/ jokes n such before skedaddling away "just because I'm not bothered by the cold doesn't I wanna stay here, it's not the best place for napping ya know"

Real shit he and his fam would have some sort of trauma over ice and snow and even the cold now for real, for fucking real. Opelucid really got the brunt of Plasma's attack, and I know that Drayden, Iris, and his parents told him to stay put, to hide inside the house, within the warmer rooms, just so he'd be safe. And like, he's young during the attack probs, imagine how that'd mess him up too, having to hide within the safety of your home while your family is in the front lines trying to save not only your city but the entire region. His sis especially, Iris probs hunted Plasma down, and had to made sure everyone else in the region was safe

But imagine if he really went out tho to at least try to help, what good is his strength as a trainer if he won't help right? And god just,,, him seeing the state Opelucid is in, how some people were frozen to death, some were struggling to warm themselves even w their pokemon, and there's still some Plasma grunts roaming around. His grandfather was fighting tooth and nail against the grunts, and even Zinzolin. The Frigate wasn't even around anymore, and he knows Iris is probably hunted them down to stop them too

Imagine how that fucked him up tho, that even after everything was settled, he hasn't forgotten abt the deaths, abt how cold it was, how helpless they all were

He doesn't interact w the pokemon in the biome that much, he hates how cold it is there, he's scared they'd use any ice attacks on him too. It didn't help, it didn't fucking help, Dragon types are weak to Ice. One good thing is that his Archaludon's Steel typing made Ice neutral, but sometimes that doesn't reassure him. There's always that lingering fear y'know, that Plasma will show up again and maybe attack the region again and he dreads the thought of it.

And even better bc in my hcs, Iris has Kyurem, she was the one who got him, the one who kept him. And y'know, as much as Drayton loves his sis, he absolutely hates how she has the pokemon that ruined their city. He knows it wasn't Kyurem's fault, he knows that, if anyone's to blame it's Team Plasma, but yknow, it's Kyurem's powers that made Opelucid a frozen hell scape
