Went out to the pond to take this photo, and heard the first spring peepers of the year. Yay! It's officially spring in Downeast, Maine.
This illustration is one over 100 I did for the forth Nature Smarts activity book from Mass Audubon and Storey Publishing. Nature Smarts Workbook: All About Water, Ages 4-6 is available for preorder now, and out May 21st. You can find it through Amazon, Mass Audubon, and other book sellers.

i feel like people aren’t getting the sheer brotherhood of all the tmnt brothers in rise and i base it on one singular episode where the four of them, genuinely might i add, did a series of things
1. wanted to make a band with all four of them together
2. thought that four different types of singing at the same time was awesome
3. thought other people should see them singing together in their hodge podge horrific sounding turtle band
4. thought they, together as a chaotic whole, sounded so cool
like so often it’s “they do their own thing in their free time” or they pair the turtles off but babes those turtles had separation issues and wanted to do everything together in true homeschooler fashion
#tmnt#sometimes i just think it’s funny when it’s like so and so thought it was a horrible idea#babes they wouldn’t see a horrible idea if it smacked them upside the face if u said they could do it together#donnie fully went with a plan to pretend salami was paper? just rolled with it?#rottmnt#it’s just the sheer homeschooler audacity of it all#i say that as someone who was homeschooled for quite a bit#i have rights i lived that life i can make fun of them#like making everything into a group activity is the biggest big family homeschooler activity on the planet

Bean has been going to Kindergarten for a month now and she freaking loves it. They don't assign homework or anything, but she assigns it to herself because she loves school, so if she doesn't finish something in class she will come home and practically pitch a fit until she gets to finish it. Like yesterday she brought home a little booklet they did for social studies about "American Symbols" and insisted we couldn't do dinner time until she had finished coloring the flag and the Liberty Bell. (But NOT the White House, because it's white.) And the one day she missed due to having a fever, her teacher sent home the learning activities they'd done just so she could have them, not even to get them returned for a grade or anything, but she was so excited about them that she skipped our evening walk so she could do them.
This kid just really loves school, and I really hope that never changes.
#adventures of bean#also reassures me that i did the right thing in enrolling in public instead of trying to homeschool#we're going to my sister's wedding this weekend and she's SO excited but also sad it means she has to miss a bit of school#but when i reminded her the teachers would save the activities for her#she got so excited and was like YES :D#kids

the friend who made that cute ofrenda is one of the few people who i can yap about fundie shit with, but she wasn't familiar with the Bates. so I gave her a rundown and her first question was honestly something I've thought about before lol:
#im a staunch believer in the first tbh#and honestly since I've been a kid homeschooling has had such an increase#this isn't a blanket statement so if you homeschool relax but i have known/do know many homeschoolers who i think are either actively#ignoring a child's learning disability/neurodivergency or just don't have enough knowledge to realize that's what's going on#and to be fair i also had learning issues/neurodivergency and was ignored in public school#the Bates family#my shit

Homeschooling as Radical Resistance
The world doesn’t want us to think for ourselves. Not really. It wants us to fall in line, tick the right boxes, and churn out productivity for a system that doesn’t love us, doesn’t care for us, and barely sees us as human. Schools—these so-called "temples of learning"—are one of the system’s most efficient tools. Designed to standardize, condition, and strip away individuality, they create obedient workers, not critical thinkers.
But what if I told you there’s another way? 🌱
Homeschooling is more than just an educational choice. It’s an act of rebellion. ✊ It’s saying no to a system that values conformity over creativity, indoctrination over truth, and obedience over autonomy. It’s a way to reclaim the future for our kids—and for ourselves.
The System Was Never Meant to Set Us Free
Let’s be real: schools weren’t designed with liberation in mind. 🏫💼 The factory model of education wasn’t about helping kids thrive; it was about churning out workers who could fill roles in an industrialized world. Sit down. Follow orders. Don’t ask too many questions.
Fast-forward to now, and not much has changed. Standardized testing? It’s a way to measure compliance, not intelligence. 🧠 The glorification of "good grades"? It’s about turning kids into products the system can sell to colleges, corporations, and beyond. Even the curriculum is steeped in control—whitewashed history, consumer-driven ideologies, and narratives that keep the status quo comfortably intact.
It’s not education. It’s programming. ⚙️
Why Homeschooling is the Ultimate Act of Defiance
Homeschooling tears up the script. 📖✂️ It says: My child doesn’t need your system. We’ve got this.
1. Reclaiming Control Homeschooling lets you decide what matters most. 🕊️ Your child isn’t learning to meet some arbitrary state standard; they’re learning to meet their own. Want to teach history that’s inclusive and honest? You can. Want to prioritize art, philosophy, or gardening over test prep? 🌻 You can do that too.
2. Raising Free Thinkers The system doesn’t want kids to question it. 🚦 But homeschooling makes space for curiosity, critical thinking, and independence. It teaches them how to think, not what to think. 💭
3. Protecting Them from Harmful Ideologies School systems are breeding grounds for harmful norms—racism, ableism, toxic competition, and more. Homeschooling gives you the power to rewrite those narratives, teaching compassion, equity, and truth instead. 🌍💛
Freedom Beyond the Classroom
Homeschooling doesn’t just free your kids from the system—it frees you too. 🌿
No more 9-to-5 schedules dictated by the school calendar. No more rushing through mornings, evenings, and weekends just to make it all fit. Homeschooling lets families slow down, build stronger bonds, and embrace a way of life that feels more human.
And for the "what about socialization?" crowd: let’s be honest. School "socialization" often means learning to endure bullying, follow arbitrary rules, and navigate rigid hierarchies. 🙃 Homeschooling, on the other hand, creates space for authentic connections—through co-ops, playgroups, and communities built on shared values. 🌈
Homeschooling is Activism
Every time you choose homeschooling, you’re saying no to the system. ❌ You’re breaking cycles of oppression and teaching your kids how to imagine something better.
Homeschooling is small-scale resistance with large-scale potential. 🌌 It’s about nurturing the next generation of thinkers, creators, and change-makers—kids who will question, challenge, and refuse to accept a world that doesn’t serve humanity as a whole.
It’s not perfect. It’s not easy. But it’s powerful. 💥
The Quiet Revolution
Homeschooling isn’t just about pulling kids out of school. 🏡 It’s about pulling them out of a system that demands obedience at the cost of their humanity. It’s about raising kids who see the world for what it is and dream of what it could be.
So here’s the truth: choosing to homeschool is choosing to resist. 🐝✨ It’s a small, quiet revolution that begins at your kitchen table, in your backyard, on the living room floor.
And in a world that doesn’t want us to think for ourselves, raising free thinkers might just be the most radical thing you can do. 🌟

✨ It boosts their confidence as they take charge of their own little schedules.
✨ And the best part? You can print a new one every month, so the fun (and learning) never stops.

Writing childhood bullies is surprisingly hard when you were only bullied in that subtle autistic kid with friends who tease them way*
*or at least not by anyone consistently. I was mocked for being androgynous—but by kids at the park I would never see again. I was talked about behind my back by kids at camp because I was awkward and excitable and weird—but again I never saw them again
#Like is this just how it is on tv or irl too?#and yes I know many autistic kids were bullied more harshly than me#I was homeschooled and generally only exposed to built in youth activity friends#many of whom were genuinely my friends and ALSO teased me in ways that messed I my self esteem#moshke writes

anyone who sticks around long enough will eventually learn that my sleep schedule is non-existent. unpredictable. all over the place.
i may be nocturnal one week. an early bird the next.
now with that said, it's almost 10am and i'm going to bed
#@ me at any time. it's hit or miss whether i'm asleep or not lmao#unless i'm active atm#as a homeschooler i wasn't rly trained to have a sleep schedule#that + adhd = well.. this lmao#(there may be something else adding to this but idk)#this will probably (hopefully) change once i get a job#then i'll have a reason to force myself into a consistent sleep schedule#didderd talks

Someone insisting we don't learn language intuitively unless homeschooled...Did...did your parents put in you in school at 18 months of age? Did a teacher go around a room of toddlers with a dictionary saying, "This is what 'mama' means"? Because if the answer to that is no--and it is definitely no--you learned language intuitively, like everyone else. The finer points you learn in school, and later on your own, but even as you're doing that, you're still picking up words and phrases just by talking to people and reading.
#I was perfectly polite in my response to her#but she clearly wants to have a superiority complex#“you must have been homeschooled by an illiterate”#wasn't homeschooled and in fact excelled in English and creative writing classes#and happen to come from a family with three English teachers and two university professors thank you very much#language is and has been a particular interest of mine#when I did manage to get hold of a dictionary and thesaurus after leaving my mother to live with my nana#(one of the aforementioned English teachers) I pored over those for hours#but I didn't learn every word there is to know#that would be impossible#I was also an avid reader#I have learned many words from the dictionary or actively looking them up#but I've also learned intuitively because that is the primary way we learn language#sometimes the words you learn intuitively end up not being to the accepted definition#that's just how it goes#when writing you try to catch yourself#particularly on proof-read#like there's a fucking reason it's much more difficult to acquire a new language after the age of 10 years#and it's not because we become less adept at reading a dictionary or thesaurus after that age#but hey if we want to make baseless assumptions I'll assume she was one of those kids in the gifted program#who never got over the fact it meant absolutely nothing
