i think that homely should be a compliment, actually. like, the british definition of the word is "(of a place or surroundings) simple but cozy and comfortable, as in one's own home." so why do north americans have to turn that around and make it rude?

saying that someone literally reminds you of your home is actually a supremely profound compliment. it might as well be a love confession at this point, with how deep that is. so why does homely have a negative connotation here?
