9 Magic Healing Herbs for Rituals

Many Pagans - and others - use herbs as a tool in their magical arsenal. While not every herb is safe to ingest - and be sure to read about Dangerous Herbs before you get started - many of them are used in a magical or folkloric context to bring about healing. If you're interested in healing magic, here are some of the most popular healing herbs to keep on hand, and how you can use them.
Please do keep in mind that if you're going to use herbs internally - such as a tea or tincture - it's always a good idea to check with your physician first. There are some medical conditions that contraindicate the use of various herbs, so do your homework before you begin.

Rosemary

For magical use, burn rosemary to rid a home of negative energy, or as an incense while you meditate. Hang bundles on your front door to keep harmful people, like burglars, from entering. Stuff a healing poppet with dried rosemary to take advantage of its medicinal properties, or mix with juniper berries and burn in a sickroom to promote healthy recovery. In spellwork, rosemary can be used as a substitute for other herbs such as frankincense.
When it comes to healing, rosemary can be used in a variety of ways.
Make an astringent out of it and use it as a skin wash to clear up your complexion, or as a soother for eczema.
Infuse it into an oil or poultice, and use it topically on achy joints and muscles, and even bruises.
Crush fresh leaves in your hand and rub the oils over your skin before gardening - it is believed that this can help keep mosquitoes and gnats from biting you.
Blend it into a light tea, and sip throughout the day to relieve an upset stomach. Note: Pregnant women should not ingest rosemary in large quantities, although using it in cooking is generally considered safe.

Lavender

Medicinally, lavender has many uses. Noted herbalist Nicolas Culpeper recommends "a decoction made with the flowers of Lavender, Horehound, Fennel and Asparagus root, and a little Cinnamon" to help with epilepsy and other disorders of the brain. Tincture of lavender has been officially recognized as a treatment in the British Pharmacopceia for two centuries. Judith Benn Hurley writes in The Good Herb that during the sixteenth century, English herbalists used lavender tucked into a cap as a cure for headaches, and advocated the use of its oils as a method of keeping wounds clean and avoiding infection.
Like many medicinal herbs, lavender is great for the skin. Add a few drops of the essential oil into a base of witch hazel, and use as an astringent. You can also add the oil to cold water and spritz it on mild sunburns for cooling relief.
Use dried lavender in an herbal tea to help you sleep - you may want to add a bit of chamomile or honey so the flavor is more agreeable.
Lavender is popular in aromatherapy - inhaling its fresh scent, or a few drops of oil, can help calm an anxious or nervous mind, as well as providing headache relief.

Feverfew

Feverfew has been used in medicinal applications for centuries. As the name suggests, it can be used to treat fevers, but there is some question as to the effectiveness of this practice. Instead, it's become popular for use in the treatment of migraines. A decoction sweetened with honey or sugar is sometimes used to relieve light coughing or wheezing.
It's a great herb to use externally as well - make a tincture or ointment to apply onto insect bites to relieve itching or swelling.
Feverfew is also used to treat issues with menstrual cramping and difficult childbirth, when brewed into a tea. If you are experiencing either of these things, consult a medical professional before using feverfew as treatment.

Basil is known far and wide as a culinary herb, but it also contains some interesting magical and medicinal properties.In some countries, however, basil is considered something that real men don't eat -- why? Because it's associated with teas that are used to provide relief from painful menstrual periods.
It's also used as an anti-inflammatory. Try some of these methods to incorporate basil into your healing magic.
Chewing on the freshly harvested leaves has a couple of different benefits - it can help relieve symptoms of coughs and colds, and even better, it can leave your breath smelling healthy and refreshed!
Use a bit of the oil or extract on insect bites to relieve pain and itching.
Boil the leaves in water to make an infusion, and take a small amount every few hours to help reduce fever, as well as provide headache relief. Gargling with basil water can make a sore throat feel better.

Apple Blossom

Apples, as a fruit, are well known for their health benefits. After all, there's that old saying about an apple a day keeping the doctor away. However, even before the fruit grows on the tree, you can take advantage of the blooms and blossoms.
Apple blossoms are actually an edible flower. You can include them in your summer salads, as a way to help digestive issues - just be sure you wash them first to get rid of any chemicals, pesticides, or crawly critters.
Make a vinegar infusion with the blossoms, and use it to treat itchy, painful insect bites or stings. A seventeenth-century herbal recommends mixing apple blossom extract with a bit of rose water and some pig fat as a cure for rough, dry skin. If you don't like the idea of using pig fat on your skin, there are plenty of alternatives - a bit of soft beeswax will work, or even some unscented cold cream.

Chamomile

In Back to Eden, Jethro Kloss recommends everyone "gather a bagful of chamomile blossoms, as they are good for many ailments." This all-purpose herb has been used to treat everything from loss of appetite to irregular periods to bronchitis and worms. In some countries, it is mixed into a poultice and applied to open wounds in order to prevent gangrene.
You can use chamomile in a variety of medical applications:
Brew into a tea to aid in problems such as morning sickness, digestive disorders, gastritis, and difficult bowel movements.
Blend with witch hazel and use as a skin wash to relieve dry skin, sunburns and eczema.
Make a mouthwash and gargle to get rid of gum inflammations.

Sandalwood

One particular species, the Indian sandalwood, which grows primarily in Nepal and southern India, is an endangered plant. However, much of the sandalwood essential oil sold in the United States and Europe today actually comes from Australian sandalwood. This is a non-endangered species, and although it has a lighter concentration than the other varieties of sandalwood, it’s still very fragrant and is popular with many aromatherapists.
While it is is typically the flowers that are harvested and used, many different parts of the sandalwood plant are used for a variety of purposes.
The essential oil is often used in holistic medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties, and some researchers are even testings its impact on cancer and other diseases.
Use the oil, diluted with a base, as an external wash for inflammations of the genital area - please, check with your doctor first on this one!
The wood can be ground down into a fine powder, and used for beauty treatments - add a bit of rose oil or camphor, and apply it to your skin for cleansing.

Goldenseal

Goldenseal has been used in medicinal applications for several centuries. While it can be taken internally, this should really be done with caution. Pregnant women should not ingest goldenseal, because it can cause uterine contractions.
However, even if you're not taking goldenseal internally, it has some useful topical applications.
Boil the leaves in water to make an antiseptic wash, and use it to treat skin inflammations, including athlete's foot.
The root can be used to make an eye wash for mild eye irritations.
Keep goldenseal handy in your medicine cabinet to clean out minor wounds and abrasions.

Eucalyptus

There's a reason your cough drops often smell and taste like eucalyptus. It's been a popular remedy for colds and respiratory ailments for a long time. You can use the oil, which is pressed from the leaves of the eucalyptus plant, in a number of healing applications.
Make a rinse of eucalyptus oil blended with water to gargle with, to relieve dental issues such as swollen or inflamed gums and gingivitis.
Warm the leaves or oil, and inhale the vapors to clear clogged sinuses, stuffy noses, and other upper respiratory issues.
Blend eucalyptus oil with a non-scented base such as coconut oil, and rub it on the chest when you've got a cold. Some people also believe you can apply it to the soles of the feet, and this will work to alleviate breathing problems, such as congestion or asthma. If you're using it to treat asthma, check with your healthcare professional first.

Do you guys have anything for herbal-based medicine (that's not from a wiccan perspective)? I'm writing a medieval fantasy story where there's no magic, and all medicines are based on plants/herbs/flowers. (think Cadfael, if you're familiar with Ellis Peters.) The medicine is pretty advanced for it being medieval (i.e. stitches, cleaning wounds, actual analgesics instead of strong liquor, etc) Love your blog! Just stumbled across it and it's already helped me so much! Thanks!
Plantago major – a poultice of the leaves was once widely used for bug bites and skin conditions. Now, it serves mostly to fuck up my lawn.
Disclaimer #1: Take absolutely none of this as medical advice. If you are ill, seek professional medical assistance. Herbs may be all natural, but they are not all safe. People die all the time from misusing dangerous herbs. Also, some herbs are safe for some people, but you might develop an allergy. This post will just discuss accepted principles of herbal medicine and how they can be adapted to a story.
Disclaimer #2: Different cultures have different approaches to herbal medicine. I can only really speak to the Western European/North American approaches. There are many systems out there, some which do combine both medical and spiritual uses. Be respectful and don’t appropriate.
What you will probably be doing most is looking for herbs/treatments to deal with specific plot points. What you need to research then, are the medical functions of the herbs, not just their names.
For example: Your main character has a fever? You need to reduce the fever, usually done with febrifuge herbs. They’re in pain? Analgesic/anodynes, unless your world has also discovered opiates. Muscle cramps? Anti-spasmodics. You want to know when to apply a poultice and when to use an emetic … or an anti-emetic.You’ll need to know which part of the plant is used, and whether to infuse, extract or decoct.
Fortunately, the best (medical) herbals are either indexed or cross-referenced this way. The hands-down best is David Hoffman’s Holistic Herbal. If you can get a used copy, any edition, SINCE YOU ARE NOT USING THIS TO TREAT MEDICAL CONDITIONS, RIGHT? it will teach you probably all you need to know. He has other books on medical herbalism, too.
Hoffman goes into a lot of pretty easy chemistry and preparation techniques, too. It’s focused mostly on the herbs readily available in the UK, continental Europe and North America.
A Modern Herbal, sometimes known as Mrs. Grieve’s Herbal, is available online. It was first published in 1931. So take that under consideration. The page linked here also has references for poisonous herbs and antidotes, one from the 1940s and a more modern reference courtesy of Cornell University.
If you want even more anachronistic resources, there’s Culpeper’s Herbal, found online here. It was written in the 17th century (but there are numerous updates) and there are some things recommended in it that are downright dangerous. But, making mistakes might be a good plot point. [note: if you follow the link above, entries have links to “More info” about that herb that’s a lot more modern. But there’s still some crackpot shit on there, so remember, this is just story research.]
Once you have a handle on a few herbs you might want to write into your story, do additional research online, although be careful. Wikipedia does do an admirable job discussing folkloric uses of herbs and whether they are now considered safe or unsafe or just useless. But don’t overlook the placebo effect, either.
A lot of herbs that have been used for centuries gather multiple common names and it can be fun to use those instead of the scientific or more modern names. Have a cup of ground apple tea to relax!
And if you want to add in aromatherapy/essential oil therapy that is evidence based and medical, not ephemeral, I would encourage you to spend time on this website here. It’s a business, but the owner is incredibly knowledgeable about using essential oils for a variety of conditions – including mental and ephemeral ones. It has a lot about safety, theory and good usage practices that are pretty low tech and perfectly suited for a high-medieval setting. Plus, a lot of this stuff smells fantastic!
Compared to a lot of MLM and other types of businesses, it is zero percent scammy. I’ve been buying from them for at least 10 years. Also, some essential oils have been clinically proven to have a therapeutic effect on living beings, and modern science has only affirmed practices that date back at least to medieval times. Essential Oils and How They Work
WHAT IS AN ESSENTIAL OIL?
Essential oils are more than just highly concentrated plant extracts. Most possess potent medicinal qualities, and many are valued for their exceptional cosmetic qualities. While the whole plants or plant parts they are derived from possess beneficial qualities, essential oils are much more powerful. Sometimes referred to as ethereal oils or volatile oils, essential oils carry the actual essence or fragrance of the plants from which they are extracted. A few popular essential oils are derived from whole plants, but most are derived from specific sections of the plants for which they are named. Some essential oils, including almond and nutmeg oils, come from seeds. Many, including patchouli, eucalyptus, and tea tree oils, are extracted from leaves. Still others come from wood, flowers, resin, or roots. Some plants, including cinnamon and bitter orange, are used as sources for more than one distinct type of essential oil. Professional practitioners use approximately three hundred essential oils to treat a vast range of illnesses, but home practitioners typically use between ten and twenty essential oils on a regular basis. Some favorites include lavender, eucalyptus, clary sage, and orange essential oils.
A BRIEF HISTORY
Cave paintings discovered in Lascaux, France, suggest that prehistoric people used medicinal plants on a daily basis. These fascinating images have been carbon dated to approximately 18,000 BCE.
Humans have possessed an understanding of the healing power of plants for thousands of years. While it is not clear when essential oils were first distilled, we know that these oils were used in various cultures, and we know that they were used for religious ceremonies as well as for healing purposes.
Herbs and Essential Oils in Ancient Times
The Egyptian people are widely renowned for their achievements, so it might not come as a surprise that ancient Egyptians were among the first to use essential oils. In fact, records show that aromatic oils were part of daily life in Egypt as early as 4500 BCE. Cinnamon, myrrh, sandalwood, and frankincense were treasured favorites; they were of such great value that they were sometimes purchased with pure gold.
In Egypt, pure essential oils were believed to be sacred, and only high priests and royalty had the authority to use them; each deity was assigned a signature essential oil blend. Images and carvings of gods and goddesses were frequently anointed with precious oils during religious ceremonies. Each pharaoh used a variety of unique essential oil blends during meditation and intimacy, and even during preparation for war.
Around 3000 BCE, scholars in India developed the science of Ayurveda, which relies heavily on curative potions containing a wide variety of essential oils. Ancient Vedic literature lists more than seven hundred
curative substances, including some of today’s favorites, such as ginger and cinnamon essential oils.
In China, aromatic herbs and essential oils made their way into remedies for a whole host of ailments. Many of these compounds are still used by today’s Eastern medicine practitioners. Chinese scholars first recorded the use of essential oils between 2697 and 2597 BCE, during Huang Ti’s reign, and the fabled Suwen, or Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, remains a significant text today.
Essential oils are mentioned in both the New and Old Testaments of the Bible—over two hundred times. Some very popular biblical essential oils are cedarwood, cinnamon, fir, frankincense, myrrh, and spikenard. These oils were used for anointing, for religious purposes, and, it seems, for the pure enjoyment of their fragrances. They were also highly valued as gifts; in the story of the Magi, the precious gifts they brought to Jesus of Nazareth at his birth included frankincense and myrrh.
Greek and Roman ancients also used essential oils, mostly for aromatherapy, therapeutic massage, personal hygiene, and medicine. Essential oil of myrrh was blended into an ointment for battlefield use; it proved an effective remedy for preventing post-injury infections.
We know Hippocrates as the “Father of Medicine.” Between 500 and 400 BCE, he documented the medicinal effects of essential oils and elements from over three hundred plants, many of which are still popular today. Hippocrates taught his students that “a perfumed bath and a scented massage every day is the way to good health.” His wisdom continues to influence modern medicine in the form of the Hippocratic Oath taken by doctors.
Galen was an influential Greek medical practitioner. Born in 131 CE and educated in Alexandria and Smyrna, he gained fame during his tenure as the surgeon to the gladiators of Pergamos. Thanks to Galen’s vast knowledge of the effective use of essential oils and other medicines, no gladiator died of infection while under his care. Galen’s success led him to an assignment as personal physician to Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. He remained a part of the Emperor’s court for the rest of his life, which he spent composing a vast body of medical texts that included plants in various medicinal categories. Though Galen died around 201 CE, his work lives on in the form of Galenic medicine, which is still practiced in India and Pakistan.
Essential Oils, Aromatherapy, and the Dawn of Modern Medicine
When Rome fell, physicians fled, carrying books by Hippocrates and Galen with them. These books made their way into Persia, where they were translated into several languages for distribution to scholars. Ali ibn Sina, who was often referred to as Avicenna the Arab, was a child prodigy born in 980 CE. He was educated as a physician and is said to have begun practicing medicine at age twelve. Ibn Sina catalogued approximately eight hundred plants, describing their effects on the human body in detail. He’s also credited with refining and recording traditional distillation methods for extracting pure, high-quality essential oils from aromatic plants.
Europeans gained firsthand knowledge of essential oils and herbal medicines after crusading knights visited the Middle East. These knights and their armies began wearing and carrying perfumes, and many acquired knowledge of distillation techniques.
During the bubonic plague epidemic of the 1400s, desperate doctors decided to try Ayurvedic blends in place of ineffective medicines. These ancient remedies, which included essential oils of camphor, meadowsweet, rosemary, and lavender, proved to be effective. At the same time, frankincense and Scots pine were burned in the streets to ward off evil spirits. Fewer people died of the plague in areas where this practice was common.
Nicholas Culpeper’s 1653 book Complete Herbal offers detailed remedies for many medical conditions. These venerable tonics contain essential oils and other effective plant-based compounds that are still widely used today.
The powerful therapeutic properties of essential oils were rediscovered in 1910, when French chemist René-Maurice Gattefoss�� badly burned his hands in a laboratory explosion and gangrene quickly developed. Gattefossé subsequently treated his hands with a single application of lavender oil, and healing began swiftly. Following this incident, Gattefossé and a colleague conducted further research on the healing properties of lavender essential oil before introducing it to French hospitals.
Later, Parisian doctor Jean Valnet used therapeutic-grade essential oils to treat injured soldiers during World War II. Two of Valnet’s students, Dr. Paul Belaiche and Dr. Jean-Claude Lapraz, conducted extensive research, examining essential oils for their antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiseptic properties. They concluded that these powerful natural substances have substantial healing capabilities.
The using of aromatherapy and essential oils in North America is a fascinating one. We know that Native Americans relied heavily upon nature’s pharmacy, utilizing plants to increase well-being in a variety of ways.
Echinacea, which is used today in a variety of forms, including whole herb and essential oil, was a favorite treatment for headaches, including painful migraines. Skunk cabbage was used to treat nervous disorders, horsemint was applied to ease back pain, and wild cherry was used to treat coughs. White pine, which Native Americans used for treating colds, remains a popular aromatherapy cold treatment today. When European settlers came to North America, they brought favorite European herbs with them. At first, these precious plants were their only source of medicine, and the plants were also used to make food more palatable. Pennyroyal and wormwood were useful for controlling fleas and other insects. Later records show that in 1631, John Winthrop, Jr. of Suffolk ordered a vast amount of seeds to be taken to America’s Massachusetts Bay Colony. Among the forty-eight plant species he ordered at a cost of £160, which was a fortune in those days, were rosemary, clary sage, angelica root, hyssop, catnip, and lovage—all of which are available as essential oils today.
As it turns out, the ancients and those who followed the pathways they laid were right. Many bacteria, fungi, and viruses die when placed in contact with certain essential oils, particularly when those oils contain terpenes, thymol, carvacrol, and phenols. Essential oils and chemical reproductions of their active ingredients are widely used in compounding modern pharmaceuticals. Extensive studies and clinical investigations are ongoing, and thanks to modern technology, many of today’s medical professionals incorporate remedies containing essential oils into holistic practice.
