I realize that "Blake Lively" is the name of an actress but the first thing that hearing it reminded me of was actually "Dirk Gently" as in Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, so I guess that to say it feels like a fitting choice for what his deal appears to be 🧐.

Actor, director and writer Zawe Ashton has no interest in being perfect. Drawn to the messiness of being a villain, Ashton uncovers the heartbreak behind the anti-hero as she takes on the role of the formidable, Dar-Benn, in Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels. Relishing the chance to make “her-story”, Ashton and DaCosta bonded over literature and their joint vision for an empowered, all-female, ethnically diverse ensemble. The lack of diversity on screen wasn’t lost on Ashton growing up as an aspiring actress – the ability to rectify that and heal her inner child is a mission Ashton is grabbing with both hands.

The vastness of the Marvel realm means most actors in Hollywood have their Marvel audition story. For Ashton, there had been previous close encounters, narrowly missing out in the latter stages. But with DaCosta, it was different. Ashton recalls, “We bonded over literature. Nia wanted to make a very small movie based on a Jane Austen novel and I was absolutely into this so we talked for a good couple of hours. But instead, what ended up happening was her asking me to play a villain in this movie… The process was so natural, I didn’t have to think so it made my goal really clear to serve Nia’s vision. Being part of this piece of “her-story” with the youngest black woman to direct a Marvel film felt extremely important as a moment in my career.”

A departure from her traumatic high school physical education lessons, Ashton felt empowered by the experience of getting into physical shape for the role, all while transitioning into motherhood. “It ended up being transformative. The entire stunt team I worked with touched my heart in such a deep way… They helped me realise a physical world so far removed from botched PE classes that had made me think that I couldn’t be a physically strong person. It was very powerful.”

It was also the opportunity to set her inner child free on set that made the transformation into Dar-Benn so liberating. She enthuses, “Having the inner child run wild was the best – and scariest – part of this film… I had to play which most of us haven’t done since the sandpit. So indulging in that was a very unique experience to have in front of thousands of people. But it was so fun – I honestly loved every second of it.”

But it was her character’s vulnerability that Ashton sought to capture. “Anti-heroes have always been attractive to me. As a child, I was drawn to the reasons for why they did what they did. So I was always really satisfied when we got to see their vulnerabilities that helped us to understand them.” And while egos often get in the way, Ashton had no qualms playing the villain. “I honestly feel like the responsibility to be the hero would be too much on my shoulders. I’m very comfortable in a space where I don’t have to present as perfect, where I get to be a bit messy or a bit frightening or a bit off centre… I always find that a very interesting journey to see why someone on the outside wants to carry out what they want to carry out.”

Despite history being made with The Marvels, Ashton isn’t shying away from debates around wider representation across the film and TV industry. She considers, “Being part of a completely female driven cast is really important – bringing different ethnicities to the screen heals the inner child within me. I think back to myself as a young girl looking to film and entertainment and not seeing a broad spectrum of representation, and how that was more damaging than I could have realised or vocalised at that age. So being part of something that makes another little girl not have to experience that is very moving.”

And while she’s hopeful for the future, Ashton knows there’s still a long way to go. “I think the scale is tipping. But there is still a huge amount to do to truly, holistically balance out the things that need to be balanced out to have a healthier industry. I feel very grateful to at least be on that road and be part of the conversation… There are so many voiceless people out there, who should probably have the mic instead. But this industry is extremely powerful in terms of how we interact with it. So I’m really aware that I have this platform because of the work that I do.”

Not content with shaping conversations on screen, Ashton is also changing the narrative through her work as a writer and director. She muses, “There are a lot of stories that are brewing inside of me that I’m desperate to get out… You get to a certain point in life where you have this incredible vantage point over a huge portion of your lived experience that you can’t really access while you’re still living it. One of the benefits of aging is that your creativity really can deepen. You have even more life experience to draw from and more creative ways of looking at that life experience. It’s another way for me to process life.”

With so many stories to tell, one character that remains a cherished favourite is the enigmatic, if not slightly deluded, Vod from Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain’s, Fresh Meat. Ashton enthuses, “I cherish her as a character so deeply. I cherish the team that helped bring her to life – all the amazing production and design team who were all part of bringing her weird and wonderful world to life. Often as an actor you can be known for a role that has a small trauma attached to it, so the character becomes an avatar that you feel slightly trapped in because how you view the character isn’t how the audience see the avatar, so I was lucky. It’s one of the biggest achievements in my career so far!”

As Ashton continues to find her voice both on and off screen, she’s discovering new realms of possibilities.

Dubbed the “delete key of the universe,”  Bart is often predatory and always purposeful. But underneath all that is what many would describe as a vulnerable and almost childlike character who longs for all the same things us non-assassins do.

Dourif: "I played with the character with my own voice for a few days and it didn’t work. And so, I guess like [laughs] a voice I have in my repertoire which I never even knew is like this weird Jersey thing [laughs]. I don’t even know what or where that’s from, but I started doing that a little bit, and then it got a little gravelly, and then it became this like dirty, kind of masculine thing which I felt like worked and so I stuck with it. [...]

I was thinking about what it is to be a woman and my life and all that, and then I was thinking about how much, you know, being like a pretty girl in a feminine setting—how much I have to think about that being an actress because you really do. I mean, when you audition, it’s like, ‘Cool, I need 50 minutes to make my hair look perfect so that some producer thinks I’m fuckable enough to be in this role’ because that truly does really matter. I mean, it’s not the majority of it at all, but it really is a huge part of it.

And Bart, it is the opposite. When I got cast as Bart, I was like, ‘Well, cool. At least I can let myself go.’ [laughs] You know? It’s like, I couldn’t shave any of my body hair or anything; I let my eyebrows grow in and they put dreadlocks and dirt and orange teeth, and I just like became this—not like a strong woman; it wasn’t even that bullshit stereotype. It was a person; even though people would argue that Bart is the delete key of the universe and not a person, I don’t think of her like that. She’s like a vulnerable person who also happens to be the delete key of the universe. But yeah, man, it was like really nice. Sexuality never came into it. And i think men get to do that all the time, and I’ve never ever been cast—I’ve never even read anything that had that, you know? [...]

’ll walk into a biker gang and there’ll be machetes and knives and bullets flying at me, and I’ve never been scared of that. But, you know, rejection is something that I think hurts and this was me being paired with somebody by the universe. He was supposed to be there and, you know, maybe he won’t like me and that hurts. If anybody’s ever been ostracized in middle school, which I have, it was like, you know, it’s really painful. Really is. [...]

I really love that Bart is unsexualized, but if we took an unsexualized woman and then made her [laughs] like experiment with sexuality, I’d be interested in that. It would be so funny. [...] I had to answer the question for myself if I’ve ever had sex and I’m not going to tell you the answer. [laughs] But I was really curious. I was like, ‘Has Bart ever gotten laid?’ And I know what it is. I know the answer. [laughs]

Do you respond to comments?

I really try to, but then I get all in my head about it and/or am really really tired and put it off so long it then feels like it would be weird to respond because it's been forever. However, if there's a direct question or something I want to address/respond to, as in, I have something particularly unique to say or a question to answer, then I'll usually respond really fast

What’s the fic with the angstiest ending you’ve ever written?

Honestly, I'm not a huge unhappy ending person, a lot of the time I'll have a first chapter I was initially going to end really angsty (see ink sunset and make a mess of you) and then added more to fix it at least somewhat. As is... maybe the somewhat unresolved emotional tension (for Ted and Trent, at least, Roy's doing great) in something to get off my chest, the +1 for betrayal's sting / absolution's balm? I have some worse ones in an old fandom on an old account but. meh.

Do you write crossovers?

Not often, but I rotate them in my brain. Honestly, though, I'm more inclined to write a fusion than a crossover proper. And even so, I tend to just be thinking about it rather than actually writing it. I've only written one crossover in recent memory (recently, that is) and it was mostly a joke about a shared actress made into actual angst.

What’s a WIP that you want to finish, but don’t think you ever will?

:( so many. AND there are a lot of posted fics I want to write a sequel/companion piece for and idk if I'll ever get the energy...

I guess off the top of my head, for this fandom, I'd go with lost sight of (who you are) (motivation died because it's old enough no one knows it exists anymore lkfgjh) and ink sunset (I WANNA FINISH IT I DO I DO I DO)

What are your writing strengths?

I think I can write a really funny string of dialogue, and I'm also fond of fun metaphors, both in the elegant poetic way and in the more Douglas Adams/Terry Pratchett way (which is to say, still potentially elegant but also comedic as hell)

What are your writing weaknesses?

Motivating myself to write anything; being overly self-indulgent

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fics?

I'm extremely bad at linguistics in general, so if I must include someone talking in another language in my fic, I think I'd tend to cheat and do italics or some other indication that this is 'in another language' (ie "Where are you going?" she asked in Russian), but that's admittedly a lazy approach. But I also think it's probably better than butchering it with an auto-translator? Also, when people just include the translation in the end notes, even with a link (although that makes it marginally better) it breaks the flow of the story and makes it hard to read. Making an effort to at least match grammar is good (which I would do if it was for longer than a single scene, probably) but I think the best solution is when people know what they're doing and like, have an actual translation with a little html code so you can click on it and it reveals what it means? Or if you're clever, revealing what it means using context around it, but that has its own limitations. So that both like, uses the actual language and doesn't break up the flow. It balances accessibility, flow, and respect for the other language in question well. But you've got to both know what you're doing with the language (either asking someone/hiring someone/knowing the language yourself) and the html (although there are guides for that you'd have to spend time figuring it out + know it exists in the first place to look). And this is fanfiction, something we ultimately do for free in our spare time, so the lazy approach, I think, can be understandable. Maybe not in every context, but it's not worth stressing a lot over in a few random lines or anything, you know? It is really cool when people do know a language well enough to include it properly in a fic, though, it can say a lot about a character or dynamic; and their background(s) and like. it's neat :)

What was the first fandom you ever wrote for?

Ever? Doctor Who. In a shitty little notebook in middle school. Then there was some Star Trek (both TNG and TOS) and Avatar: the Last Airbender and Marvel and such, and then Supernatural (my first smut? extremely terrible Destiel smut. rip) and I think the first thing I ever posted was Welcome to Night Vale? Not sure.

mona hc: she takes her title of a holistic actress Very seriously, and prides herself on believeability of each role she perfoms, so it's very important that people use correct pronouns depending on the form: an old man mona goes by he/him, a chair mona must be refered to as it/its, and so on. she's a girl, he's a boy, it's an object, mona's anything mona wants to be!

so like, if mona's being a doorstopper, and someone, knowing that the doorstopper is indeed mona, refers to it with she/her, it's gonna be upset at them >:(

in short: mona uses she/he/it/they pronouns, but those are extremely context-dependent and can't just be used interchangeably willy-nilly. if mona's out of sight, the best call is to use either the pronouns that fit the last form people remember it taking, or she/her because the black-haired girl is her chosen "default" state

What hits the hardest about Quinton trying to give more context to what Jeanette went through is how it brings this knee jerk reaction to say “Oh I knew all along.”. But I remember knowing all along being thinking talking about teenage girl’s underwear was a sign of maturity or that Jeanette’s face always felt strange when she didn’t act violent or angry, like the nuances of being neutral was something she couldn’t act. And being young than the cast meant that I watched all that and took these things in as normal because there had to be so many adults to approve of this content. When something felt weird I thought I just didn’t get it. It just leaves me stuck on how kids really are just forming their concept of acceptable on the hope that older people around them are giving them the right inputs.

And these things continue beyond her to the child actress she stole a role from because that child was hardwired to smile on command. It makes me think of the nature of LA, the crew desensitized from work to leave her having attack alone. And at points I don’t even blame Jeanette for thinking therapy is a scam because it is in essence. I need it like I need ibuprofen from demanding psychical labor. Sometimes I feel a small tint of resentment at the idea therapy isn’t as holistic as we treat it and I think of the one who had a complex intentionally choosing to limit the range of help I was allowed to explore due to her own anti medical beliefs. I can see just as many ways that in somewhere like LA, the wrong therapist could just push a cycle of stagnation rather than actually bettering someone. It’s upsetting how we could have just as easily of never gotten to see Jeanette’s side before some tragic post mortem story written by an outsider was made for her.

lee taeyeon, a comprehensive timeline, pt. ii (2020— 2023)

2020

taeyeon gets really into caffeine this year.

he gets a girlfriend, too, an actress a few years older than him, who doesn't mind that he doesn't have the emotional capacity or the actual physical time to be in her lap every other day, which is nice. the sex is good, objectively speaking, but they fight a lot and rumors spread when they get cast on a short-lived variety show together. fortunately, people buy into the mentor story, especially when taeyeon's legitimate debut as an actor is announced - a lead this time, no less. only filming happens this year, thankfully. promotion is a problem for next year's taeyeon.

he also starts to hear whispers of a solo debut in the works, but he's not so sure it's because they see his true potential as an individual act, what with his brand reputation being on a consistent upward trajectory, never straying far from the top ten, or if another way to bleed him dry monetarily came to them in a dream. either way, they hand him a pen and tell him to start jotting "things" down. ideas. maybe so they can go for the self-written angle, but anyway. they call it a vague someday, promising starlight in inevitability, but indigo is still young, all things considered, not even five years old, and taeyeon can barely stomach the work he does divided among four other people, so he takes it for what it is. a bone, motivation to keep eating when his plate is already full - metaphorically, of course. they keep him frail. it looks better on camera.

he writes a lot, raps a lot, sings a lot, especially when he and his girlfriend inevitably crash and burn. most of it ends up on love yourself: tear. it feels appropriate. his emotion drips over every track and blues, bless their hearts, praise him for his growth as an artist.

he starts kissing boys. fever bleeds out. he'll worry about it later.

2021 - 2022

merging in as an artist under infinite entertainment is something that is very much outside of his scope of culpability or concern, but like any competent employee, he makes it a point to get in good with the people that work with them. incidentally, he makes some of his dearest friends behind the curtain and finds that it's a lot easier to feel like lee taeyeon, just-some-guy than lee taeyeon, global idol, in modest company. modest, of course, being relative, but appropriate.

in all other aspects of his life he feels raw.

the year they're in the thick of the infinite world tour is coincidentally the year their musical identity wavers somewhat, in taeyeon's opinion. he's sure there's no correlation.

he does a lot more modeling, but also finds it pivotal to reach new heights as a dancer. it's probably the most determined and ambitious that taeyeon is in his career thus far, but is simultaneously the sickest he's ever been. he spends more of his time in places that he can grow, studios, the gym, with choreographers in as many stops as he can. he looks in the mirror and sees less and less of himself, but it all comes to a head when he passes out after one of indigo's sets.

it's a necessary wake up call when he comes to and still sees black spots swimming in front of his eyes, when pulling in breath hurts his lungs. he chooses healing, realizes that he's not any good to anybody dead. to be clear, he doesn't heal in the holistic sense, but he finds a secret thrill in doing things he shouldn't be. in the latter half of the year, he opens up some, to new people, new substances, and new experiences, and mourns a version of himself that had been deprived of living.

he looks into the mirror by the end of it all, more fulfilled and creatively nurtured than he'd been for entirely too long, and sees a softness he thought had been sculpted away, a youth that he'd be neglecting. life.

he falls in love with music again, with words, and decides to use them to make up for lost time.

in may of this year, a thread drops on twitter from an anonymous source attempting to out taeyeon, filled with "evidence" of his sexuality, including creep shots of him with various men and coming in and out of bars that cater to the lgbtq community, using his history in waacking and tutting as fodder for their claims of his "abject femininity". as it were, there's an attempt made to prove that he's in a secret relationship with a man, exacerbating rumors that have surrounded him for years. the initial strategy is to ignore it, which is to say, he's told by infinite higher ups to ignore it while they handle it legally. and, for a while, he does. but when more and more posts start popping up on different platforms, and the tone of indigo's fanbase shifts into something nasty, it stops sitting right with taeyeon and he takes it upon himself to post on instagram condemning the original poster for treating being gay like it's something dirty or immoral, explaining that he's not secretly dating anyone and that even if he were gay, it wouldn't be anyone's business or any reason to look at him any differently as an artist. he finishes his statement off by commending and recommending numerous out queer artists to his fans and reiterating that his interest is in cultivating a community of kind, open-hearted individuals, not bigots.

his post is received mostly positively, but is controversial enough that things take a pretty abrupt halt. the solo debut that he'd been working on for the better part of the last two years gets vaulted and his socials go dark. it's as good as being put in time out in idol terms, and with 2023 being indigo's least active year in their entire lifespan, he's essentially left to rot and reflect. he doesn't feel bad about it, continues to work with and endorse brands that have shown him love, and makes it a point to double down during promotions, publicly donating to various organizations. his role is notably lessened for the singular comeback they do have, but for the first time in a long time, he feels a sense of agency over himself and he realizes that living authentically where he is in his career is a real possibility, one that he has every intention of taking.

Rozy — a scent inspired by 1950’s actress Anna Magnani, known as the “She-Wolf” for her passionate performances — opens with a liquored aldehydic rose, very retro glamour, and then quickly gets dusty and musky. It’s a cloud of slightly-peachy warmth and dry darker mossiness.

A few minutes in, Rozy is dominated by cooling, sharp-green tarragon against the mossy-earthy backdrop.

On me, Rozy is a rose chypre, emphasis on the chypre — it’s all about deep mossy forest greens with a bit of aldehydic & animalic bite. We’re firmly in femme fatale territory: a style of classic glamour that comes with raw sensuality and a mean streak.

half an hour in, Rozy relaxes and actually starts to become rosy — or, rather, has a rose/amber/peach phase, warm and skin-like and expansive. I think I do sense a bit of passionfruit here as well; there’s a tart, purplish fruity facet alongside the soft peach. As fruit, rose, and ambery-musky warmth intersect the green moss, the effect is symphonic and glorious.

The far drydown is a hazy, skin-like amber-peach-moss, a comfortable sort of sensuality that stays with you all day.

Rozy reminds me a bit of Chypre Palatin (another niche fruity/green chypre with a retro-glamour sensibility) but Chypre Palatin is much more aggressive and high-contrast — its greens are sharper, its fruits jammier, its base darker. Rozy is a holistic blend. Its sharp edges are tamed into loving warmth.

The other natural comparison point for a peachy chypre is Mitsuoko, but Rozy is from a totally different planet: Mitsuoko has a tender, sweetly spiced, peach-and-cinnamon thing going on, and even at its mossiest it’s rather sentimental in spirit. Rozy is spice-free, much drier, and never loses its edge.
