I was going to wait till December to share this poll, but so many Christmas decorations are popping up everywhere that I already have the spirit and can't wait anymore.
If you grew up with the classic Rankin/Bass animated Christmas specials – both stop-motion and traditional animation – which one is your favorite?

On the first stop of the movie list, is a real classic for my family and maybe yours too. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (1964) done by Rankin Bass. This movie is one I’ve watched since I was small. My parents had to hide the VHS tapes in fear that my brother and I would ruin the tapes watching them all year. I love that this movie started a stop motion legacy of quirky, fun, and sometimes awkward holiday movies that we watch every year. If you’ve somehow never seen it, but I doubt it, give it a go.

I wrangled a collection of Rankin Bass Christmas specials - not just Rudolph and Santa Claus is Coming to Town. No. I got the...other ones.
Thought I should watch them all, if they're as fun as the others.
They aren't, and I understand why they didn't become Christmas Classics.
Jack Frost - ok, with a good bit of "how to not be an ass when you've been friendzoned".
First Christmas Snow - boring. Nuns, orphans, sheep. Angela Lansbury I guess, but not worth it.
Leprechaun's Christmas Gold - ? I mean ? I thought it was going to be a cautionary tale, like, "don't pull up trees on mysterious islands", but it turned out to be more like "don't get tricked by banshee or your husband will go out for a pack of cigarettes and never come back".
Pinocchio's Christmas - this is when I started skipping the songs. What an annoying little shit. Geppetto has a wig.
Rudolph's Shiny New Year - I hate baby noises, and I don't like Jerry Lewis impersonations, even if they are by a cave man. "It's ok that people laugh at you, it means you make them happy" wow that was some bullshit.
But if you want to be fully horrified?
Nestor, the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey
What the fuck even.
Only pain.
Romans stealing the livestock for slaves - yes, they use that word - never to be heard about again.
Nestor spending the night in a storm under the dead body of his mother. Awesome. "Whatever happens, you must be brave" she says.
I'm trying not to nitpick a dead donkey, but there was a sheltered cliff wall like 5 feet to their left.
Yes, that's his mom. "The lord works in mysterious ways," says the narrator.
It's ok though, he finds a cherub (?) and then finds Jesus.
Oh I should mention that the story is being told by his great-great-child of some type, who now works for Santa as a dray horse basically.
So anyway I don't think I can watch anymore. Sorry. There are so many and I just...can't.
(I did watch the Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, which was bonkers enough to merit its own post though. Image-heavy let me tell you.)

Last night I was watching Olive the Other Reindeer and one thing I really appreciate about the special is that it has the plot of "Santa can't deliver presents" but Santa not being able to do so doesn't equal Christmas being cancelled. It's more like "this very special thing that we all look forward to may not be able to happen. It sucks and may put a damper on the mood, but you can still celebrate the holiday in your own way."
#olive the other reindeer#christmas specials#holiday specials#ramblings#I'm not hating on specials that do equate Santa to Christmas happening in the first place#but it always puzzled me whenever the plot would say that because Santa isn't able to deliver gifts#that means we have to shut down the whole holiday#like no you don't??#you can still celebrate???

Any other Cybertronians want to boop Cliffjumper, that's fine, he's more than happy to grin and laugh along and do some booping in return
Just- pay no attention to the grumpy human teenager he stuck inside the little hollow nook in his chestplates. She's off limits to any booping he hasn't vetted as being appropriately gentle

I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate that DC can't just make their very clear anthology series... an actual series. I hate that so much, it makes finding other issues hours long work and then you're still coming up empty for some years and you have no way of finding it.
They're doing a semi-okay job with DC Pride. Still, I don't really get why it's not treated as one series, that is just releasing issues once a year. So it's DC Pride 2023 instead of DC Pride Issue 3. But at least they're all CALLED the same thing so you can find all DC Pride issues and then just... conclude that there wasn't one in 2020 or prior. Same with the DC Power series.
But their annual holiday specials and Valentine's Day specials? An absolute fucking mess. Incomprehensible gibberish.
And! The holiday specials started off... coherent enough. With the Rebirth Holiday Special (2017), followed by the Holiday Special 2017 (2018). Like, it's not that they made up a cutesy, dumb name for the first issue when they didn't know a second would follow and had to commit to the bit. They made two coherent ones and then went with things like the Nuclear Winter Special (2019), or 'Tis the Season to be Freezin' (2022). This is stupid.
The Valentine's Day series inexplicably managed to get even worse at the naming convention this year, with the latest issue being called How to Lose Guy Gardner in 10 Days... Why. There is one oneshot in that collection that's about Guy, and the all-Guy cover coupled with that title just does not make this look like it's a Valentine's oneshot collection?? Why give this a hyper-specific name that only relates to one out of EIGHT stories?
At least the other Valentine's Day specials have some type of love/passion motif in the title - Young Romance, Young Monsters in Love, Mysteries of Love in Space, Crimes of Passion, Love is a Battlefield, Strange Love Adventures, Harley Quinn Romances (and that last one at least earned the specifics of Harley's name on it by tying all the little stories inside together through the narrative).
Look, I do understand standalone anthology books. You release one book with many oneshots and it relates to nothing.
But that's just not really what these are. They do relate to each other by sharing a specific theme. So why not put them under the same mantle? Because I love reading them and I don't believe I'm the only one who ever got "Man, I would love to read all the oneshot collections with the winter holiday theme or the Valentine's Day/romance theme" and it would be so easy to find them if you could just look up a DC Valentine's Day Specials series, instead of having to figure out that Love is a Battlefield and Strange Love Adventures are Valentine's Day oneshot collections.
