Hallmark has an absolutely enormous collection of holiday ornaments, and a shockingly large number of Barbie-specific holiday ornaments. When I first saw some of these, like the original 1988 Holiday Barbie ornament, or the original debut 1959 swimsuit Barbie ornament, I thought those were perfectly sensible parts of the line.
Tumblr media
However, I have since discovered that there are some simply bizarre choices for Barbies to turn into ornaments. I am not judging you if you want to hang these on your tree, I am just struggling to imagine what kind of person you are if that is what you want.
Tumblr media
For example, you can get a Christmas tree ornament of Brooklyn and Malibu in a pink car.
Tumblr media
Or, you could get a Hallmark Keepsake Ornament of Hot Skatin' Barbie.
Tumblr media
Or, Campus Sweetheart Barbie.
These are so specific that I don't know who exactly the target market is - though, to be fair, if one of those happens to be your personal favourite Barbie of all time, why not hang her on your Christmas tree?
What's fun, though, is that the Barbie Christmas ornament market has expanded beyond Hallmark: for example, Typo has a Barbie themed Christmas ornament selection.
Tumblr media
(They actually also have ornament collections themed around other pop culture, like the TV show Friends, the comic Peanuts, and the cartoon Spongebob Squarepants.)

506. The Sunday Salespapers, December 4, 1988, part 2
(part 1)
Tumblr media
Win a cute lil wagon or a big scary wagon.
Tumblr media
You guys, its ~our coffee~ in holiday packaging!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This obviously has nothing to do with the holidays, unless you make hamburgers for 40 as part of your Christmas Eve, I just had to share this giant keg o ketchup. 32 oz! That's two more ounces than the Stanley I put my iced espresso and cream in so I can sip on it all day.
Tumblr media
We have our first silly goose! You know, the folk art geese everybody's moms wanted in the late 80s into the early 90s. Their kerchiefs always had to be blue and white! Also, sorry, but I'm not giving my cats mysterious drops to change their smell of their poops.
Tumblr media
I need to know this tasted. What is simethicone.
Tumblr media
oh. This. this was the collection of terrible secret santa presents. Except for you cat mug, you can stay. I had that brass jewelry rack! I had it with my Barbie stuff and Ariel's hair got tangled up in it.
Tumblr media
I have never considered broccoli in a dip until I saw this. You would have to cut the broccoli up teeny tiny for it to be dip-aple, I'm guessing. A little smaller than broccoli cheese soup size, I guess.
Tumblr media
I am flabbergasted at how cheap this Caboodle at Treasury Drug was. This is an early model that looks more like the Plano tacklebox it was descended from.
Tumblr media
This order form for an engraved Parker pen is insane. Why couldn't you just fill out the form, choose the pen you want, what you want the pen to say, include a check and send it off. Why did you have to buy the pen, take the ink refill out of the pen, make sure you keep the box it came in, fill out the form and send all that off. Also I didn't know that Popples were also footballs.
Tumblr media
WOAH. WOAH WOA. My dad was a firefighter and I'm sure if mom n dad had the money back then, I would of had this.
Tumblr media
Again, not Christmas, but on everybody's home recorded tape of a Pee Wee Christmas, there is a commercial for this toothpaste on it.
Tumblr media
I wouldn't be able to make my mind up on what sheet set I would want. Alf or Garfield, Alf or Garfield.
Tumblr media
Ok, who didn't have or didn't know someone who had this.
Tumblr media
The Kiblan cat sheets! Kiblan stuff goes for so much $$$ on eBay. I was wondering why that Mickey pillow looked so familiar, then I remembered it was in a law office commercial when I was a kid! It was on fire! Something about how the law offices were responsible for fire retardant toys and children's pajamas? I know I have the commercial on one of my tapes a local friend sent me. Just can't find it right now.
Tumblr media
More Silly Geese and the house they lived in!
Tumblr media
Even MORE. Also tablecloths and tables my mom most definitely had. I love how the rugs are described as "kitchen slices".
Tumblr media
Man, Bradlees was home of the Silly Geese.
Tumblr media
I only share this bride because she reminds me of Markie Post.
Tumblr media
I wonder if those California Raisins keychains from Pep Boys are leftover figures from the Hardees promotion. Big oof on the front facing Alf.
Tumblr media
It is 2024 and I want Alf pajamas back. I had an Alf nightgown where Alf discusses how much he loves cats.
Tumblr media
I had those lil Oliver shoes!
Tumblr media
I also had some flocked Oliver toys from Sears that had amazing detail. (source)
Tumblr media
SEARS, what were you doing selling an ear piercing kit.
Tumblr media
I love that a New Yorker esque comic was used for Crispix.
Tumblr media
You tellin' me there's no Hawaiian Punch in these Tutti Frutti cookies?!
Tumblr media
This is one of my most missed foods. Matt from the Purple Stuff Podcast always brings up the commercials that gave people the idea of of McNuggets as a holiday party food . This is my idea of a holiday food for an 80s holiday party held at someone's giant house in the suburbs.
Tumblr media
Again, not related to Christmas, but to childhood. Did anybody else's first grade teacher make you bring a bottle of this soap to school on the first day? We used it for the sink in the classroom. Was that just my mean first grade teacher, Mrs. Bailey?
Tumblr media
We had the ornament of the couple on the sled with the horse!
Tumblr media
We laughed at winning an almond orchard back in 1988, but could you imagine how much it would potentially be worth in 2024 with all the almond milk yall be drinking?!

Holiday Barbie 2024: the holiday tradition continues
Tumblr media
Since 1988, Barbie fans around the world have eagerly awaited a special holiday edition of their beloved fashion icon. Each year, these doll releases capture the essence of the season with unique designs and intricate details. The Holiday Barbie 2024 Collection continues this cherished tradition by introducing five stunning dolls that capture the essence of glamor and joy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 2024 collection includes five dolls instead of four (as in the previous few years), thereby adding a fresh touch to the tradition and expanding the variety for collectors to choose exactly the fashion doll they like.

@eemcintyre's top 118 favorite movies in alphabetical order
An admittedly random number that includes objectively "well-made" films with artistic merit, objectively considered-to-be-entertaining movies, and possibly questionable ones that I'm sentimental for or just like for whatever mysterious reason (usually a hot guy but not always). The thrift store gods were nice today and let us find perfect outfits to see Barbenheimer (although we're seeing Oppenheimer first so it's technically Oppenbie) anddddd the perfect base dress for a christmas Barbie look for Holmat! Gonna add more layers of tulle and make some sleeve poofs to match the 1988 Holiday Barbie!

Where to start on this outfit 💖
The stars-on-stars flares are giving me Holiday Barbie 1990, a lil Superstar Barbie 1988, solid star prints on a pink tule has been a big Barbie motif for a long time - this feels like a subtle nod (cause the tule was HUGE in those dolls) with a more modern take on the star print.
The solid pinks and pointed stars put me more in mind of the Barbie X PÜR makeup collection - very modern.
Tumblr media
The hat is of course very Winkin' Western Barbie, but the outfit is totally different from her, and from Western Stamping Barbie - both more white/blue looks with fringe.
Tumblr media
I think it's a combination of Barbie's very Pink colour identity in the movie (And Ken is Blue - we're here to analyse gender roles), and the want to design something new and original with historic nods.
Like I love the laced-up trouser front, because I could see some of the earliest Barbie's having that detail - the OG zippers were real and the fabric quality was incredible 💖

I haven't been posting about any of the 2024 Holiday, Christmas or other seasonal Barbies in any of my new release round-up posts, because I wanted to save them up for December. So now I can't put it off any further - it's time to talk about them.
So to start off with, the 2024 Holiday Barbies - this year, a five-doll release.
Tumblr media
The series has been ongoing, albeit with a few different names over the years, since 1988. In 1988 and 1989, this was released only as a white blonde Barbie. From 1990 onwards, Mattel began to release two dolls a year, with both a white blonde and an AA Barbie. In more recent years this has expanded even further.
The 2024 dolls in particular were moderately controversial, not because of the dolls themselves, but because of Mattel using generative AI to create the box design. The earliest I could find someone discussing this was from Stella Brown in mid July, but this was officially discussed by Mattel and Adobe in October. (Technically, actually, this article from June also discusses Mattel using generative AI in their designs: but it doesn't specifically mention the 2024 Holiday Barbie, the first Barbie about which I saw widespread press about Mattel actually using it.)
Tumblr media
But the Holiday Barbies are far from the only seasonal Barbies Mattel has produced this year. There's also the third entrant in the much newer annual series, 12 Days of Christmas, as designed by Bill Greening.
Tumblr media
This series is a 12 day countdown, featuring a Barbie and a number of Christmas accessories, including a wreath, candles and gingerbread cookies.
Tumblr media
I'm always charmed by vintage-style collectors Barbies, so I can't think of much to say about this. Would I pay premium price for them? Probably not. But I like looking at them, and like that they exist.
Also the third installment in a collectors series - though this one identified as the third and final - is the Bob Mackie Holiday Angel.
Tumblr media
I'm always a big fan of any Bob Mackie doll, as he has such a distinctive style that just shines through. My biggest quibble is Mattel coyly branding this as "Holiday", as you can see the Christmas influence all over it.
Worth noting also that while this is very specifically branded as a Bob Mackie doll, Bill Greening is credited as co-designer!
And last but not least (or at least, I think last... there's so many I'm concerned I've missed one) is the Mariah Carey Holiday Celebration doll.
Tumblr media
For some people, Mariah Carey is practically unanimous with Christmas, so I can't very well fault them for this. Designed by Angel Kent, this doll specifically pays homage to "All I Want For Christmas Is You". (Specifically, the 2019 version - although I'For some people, Mariah Carey is practically unanimous with Christmas, so I can't very well fault them for this. Designed by Angel Kent, this doll specifically pays homage to "All I Want For Christmas Is You". (Specifically, the 2019 version - although I'm super not a music person so I couldn't have told you that without seeing it on the Mattel website.)
Note: Over the coming days I will also be reblogging seasonal posts from last year as well, just for the nostalgia factor.
