More wonderful photos of Gaia the Black-Footed Cat. She was very eepy and a tad shy/hungry as she did hide in her private area where they feed her for a while.
She has the best Grumpy faces.
But also is just too cute when sleeping sitting up.

Utah’s Hogle Zoo
Meet our newest resident, Gaia, the black-footed cat! 🐾 At just 8 months old, she is small in size but large in her feisty personality.
Gaia comes to us on a breeding recommendation from the Black-Footed Cat Consortium. Her arrival marks an important step in the conservation of her species; with only 29 black-footed cats in the Consortium, successful breeding could significantly contribute to the program. Gaia’s introduction to Ryder, the male black-footed cat, is in the cards, but we’ll let these two feline friends get acquainted when Gaia reaches maturity.
Black-footed cats, the smallest species of wild cat in Africa, can be found in the arid eastern parts of Namibia, Central and Southern Botswana, and South Africa. Its name is derived from having black or dark brown soles or pads. Predominantly nocturnal, its status in the wild is often challenging due to its shyness and preference for nighttime activity.
As Gaia settles into her new home in the Small Animal Building, you might notice curtains or barriers around her space. We appreciate your help in keeping noise low while she gets acquainted.
Welcome, Gaia! 🤍

Hogle Zoo is an AZA accredited facility, opening up a new area 3 acre area called "Wild Utah" to feature various native Utah species. 3 of those animals are going to be orphaned cougar cubs that were rescued and unable to survive in the wild on their own.
Note that 2 of these cubs have shortened ears and tails because of frostbite. They were rescued in Nebraska where the weather conditions were severe, and again, these cubs were unequipped to handle it on their own.
This would be a very positive story about giving orphaned cubs a second chance at a good place where they will receive all the care that they need... or so you would think.
Instead, multiple people on the comments were asserting that they were just going to prisons, one even going so far as to say that it would've been better to just let them die.
Wonderful. Nothing says "I love animals" than explicitly saying that they're better off dead than at an accredited zoo. Again, you will note that 2 of the 3 were suffering things like frostbite when they were rescued. There is nothing humane about letting animals that are within your power to help die like that.
I cannot, and will never, understand the "logic" behind this kind of mindset. Yes, baby orphaned animals die in nature all the time. No, we cannot save them all. But for those we can help... why not help them? And why is a life well cared for at an accredited zoo somehow worse for them than suffering a slow and painful death from starvation and exposure?
These animals do not have the same concepts of freedom vs. prison like we do. All they knew was that their mother is gone, and they were cold and starving.
Yes, bad or less than ideal zoos exist. Hogle Zoo is not one of them. Zoos and aquariums are not universally prisons, and if you think that, then let me just ask... what kind of prisons have you been to!? Seriously, all of the animals I've had the privilege to work with eat better than I do, and are treated vastly better than human prisoners are. How privileged must you be to think that all zoos and prisons are equivalent to one another!
Here's the reality: the zoological industry is a complex, nuanced thing that is ever improving and expanding. We're not stuck in the 1970s like you are. Stop judging animal welfare based on vibes, and stop drinking the PETA, HSUS et al. kool aid, because they're lying to you.
#pro zoo#anti-captivity kills#rescued animals are not better off dead#I have no respect for the better-off-dead-than-fed mindset#I said what I said#zoos are not prisons#vibes do not make you animals experts

Since you’ve left me a Christmas ask☺️💕
How are Chrysta and her boys celebrating their Christmas with their baby bats?🥺
Awww thank you MJ!!! 🥹🥹 Happy Holidays and thank you for the cute ask!! 🩷🩷
Now, holidays with the coven are definetly a little bit hectic, but that doesn't make them any less fun! Especially when they decide to drive down to Utah to spend it with Grandpa and grandma Campbell. (Chrystas parents)
They drive out about two or three nights traveling and sight seeing, taking a few stops to stretch legs and get a bite and place to snooze for the day, let the little bats get some energy out before hopping back onto the bikes and heading out in their way.
[Also to note that Marko and his baby Kat don't celebrate Christmas, and they celebrate Hanukkah!]
They baby bats love anything that has to do with going out shopping and seeing pretty lights and houses decorated! While they go out shopping with their grandparents their all crowded at each side if the car trying to look at the passing houses.
The trips to the Hogle Zoo are the best part for the whole family. Especially cause they have the Zoo-lights through all of December. The girls and Chris love seeing the animals and the whole place at decked out for festivities.
LAGOON!!! [I know Lagoon isn't open during winter but SHSHSHS Let's pretend it is] the states theme park is a little taste of home when the boys are feeling a tad bit homesick from Cali. They're taking the kids on every ride- at least the ones they're big enough for. Jenny and Annie are only enough for the bigger rides and are thrilled to wait in a mile long line with their fathers to ride the colossus for the millionth time. Chrysta will take the little kids and Chris around on the carousel, or to get some hot cocoa and candy-canes. 😋
Based on a family tradition of mine, the family all goes to the Layton Mall for their Christmas shopping! It's most specific for the kids of course, but the boys don't mind finding some pretties for their Cherri at JC-Penny or Victoria's Secret.🤭 [they also spoil these kids to DEATH I SWEAR]
The boys and Chrysta will split up with each of the girls and take turns roaming around the different levels of the mall to go Secret shopping, letting the girls and Chris pick out a gift or two for each of their sisters and baby brother, before switching parents and looking for the next. [David and Marko like to give the kids any hints on what one of the others fancied while searching earlier if their struggling to find something. 🥺]
They love making caramel or hard candy's with Chrysta and their grandpa! It's an old family recipe that Chrysta is happy to finally share with her own little ones now. 🩷
Ice skating us a rather amusing event to watch. Either Chrysta skating around with a tail of little ones holding onto her making a little train, or watching Marko struggle to even stay upright. Everyone being both pleasantly surprised and slightly freaked out with how good David is on the ice, Paul hanging onto Dwayne for dear life the whole time. In the end, everyone is cold and wants to go snuggle up and nap by the fire.
But the best thing of going to Utah for the holidays was the first time they ever decided to do it, and the girls and Chris saw snow for the first time.
Their big eyes all wide when David opened the curtains of the window in their bedroom, showing a nightly snowfall, leaving a powder of pure white on the grown, reflecting colored lights adorning the houses down all the streets. It was probably the first time Chrysta saw David smile so genuinely and big watching their little faces light up. 🩷🩷

Did you hear scientists found evidence of the original grumpy cat living on Mount Everest? This species is the Pallas’ cat, and here’s what we imagine is every Pallas’ cat’s reaction to the discovery 😂
Hogle Zoo
This is a remarkable breakthrough for many reasons: First is the Pallas’ cat’s ability to adapt. Their habitat range is expanded beyond what was originally thought, both in the distance and at sea level. Finding them at the top of the world (17,000 ft above sea level!), with extreme conditions, shows how resilient this species is. Second, this shows the incredible biodiversity at the top of Mount Everest. A place that seems hard to thrive has a lot more life than we imagined! Third, this shows how conservation genetics and environmental sampling can be powerful approaches to discovering and studying elusive species, like the Pallas cat! They found this species through sampling scat. This showed the researchers the species whose scat they sampled and the food they were eating (pika and mountain weasel). We are excited about future research to determine how many Pallas’ cats live on Mount Everest. It will also help protect them so they can continue to live their best grumpy cat lives.

Her name is Gaia, she weights about 3 pounds and is 8-months old. That’s about as big as she’s going to get, as compared to the other Black-Footed Cat they have who is massive compared to average one. (Pictures of him below)
She’s been getting more used to her enclosure and the many people excited to see her. And getting zoomies.
Im fucking sobbing looking at the new black footed cat at Utah's Hogle zoo
Shes just a fucking baby
Baby with a 60% successful kill rate
