And finally: the promised chicken pictures! From the day they hatched to a couple days ago (they grow SO fast).

Five of them hatched overnight, they were all stuffed inside the little incubator until we got them out.

Started with paper towels, switched to sand after a couple of days when they were a little sturdier on their feet.

You see those feathers at the very edge of their wings? At this point, almost the entire wing is made up of actual feathers, and theyre gorgeous! Theyre going to become beautiful adult chickens.

Hey guys!

We bought more chickens :D

Dont have too many pictures of the new ones since theyre pretty skittish still.

We have 14 total now, 6 italians hatched at home, and 8 swedish blommehöna. Despite being two days older, the swedes are only half as bag as the italians. Were not sure what the cause of this is, since the size difference is so weird and they seemed well cared for in their previous home, so we just attribute it to them being a slow growing breed.

We’re obviously hoping for some above average odds regarding the sex, since we cant tell hens from roosters yet from looks alone, and behaviour is inconclusive for most of them. Fingers crossed we have 4 hens at least, 5 if we’re really lucky.

The italians are 50/50, 3 roosters (Kappa turned out to be male, just slower developing) and 3 hens. Häkkinen has been a real bitch to the new chicks despite being a hen, but oh well, they’re all growing closer by the day.

And off they go. After day 2 of fierce days of pillaging by a robust neighboring hive, my mentor has decided that robber screens, wet sheets and herbal vaporub are just not going to cut it. In a last chance attempt to save the hive we have relocated them to Steve’s 1.4 miles away to collect themselves. In her brief inspection she noted some really funkadelic comb making going on, but stated that there is no longer any honey. This is not absolutely awful, since I knew I was going to be feeding them through the winter anyway. . Fingers crossed the queen is still alive and well ❤️ We will know in a bit once they have calmed down.
