5 Fun Activities for Kids in Boston
Boston, a city brimming with history and culture, offers a wide range of activities for families with children. Whether you're a resident or a visitor, you're in for a treat with the many engaging and educational experiences available. Here are five fun activities for kids in Boston that promise not only entertainment but also learning opportunities and memorable experiences.
1. Explore the Boston Children's Museum
Located on the Fort Point Channel, the Boston Children's Museum is a haven for young minds eager to explore and learn. Known for its interactive exhibits, this museum encourages children to touch, play, and discover. With three floors of fun, there is something for every child.
Exhibit Highlights:
The New Balance Foundation Climb: This three-story climbing structure is both a physical and mental challenge, encouraging kids to navigate their way through creatively designed spaces.
Peep's World: Based on the popular PBS show, this area allows children to explore the wonders of science through nature and water play.
Kid Power: A hands-on exhibit that promotes healthy living through activities that teach about exercise, nutrition, and wellness.
Parents can rest easy knowing that each exhibit is designed with educational purposes in mind, promoting creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork.
2. Discover the New England Aquarium
Situated on Central Wharf, the New England Aquarium is a mesmerizing place for children and adults alike. Home to thousands of marine animals, the aquarium offers an opportunity to learn about the ocean's ecosystems and the creatures that inhabit them.
Must-See Attractions:
The Giant Ocean Tank: This four-story coral reef exhibit is the centerpiece of the aquarium. It features hundreds of Caribbean reef animals, including sea turtles, stingrays, and tropical fish.
The Penguin Colony: Kids will love watching the playful antics of the aquarium's penguins, which include African and rockhopper penguins.
Shark and Ray Touch Tank: This interactive exhibit allows children to gently touch cownose rays, Atlantic rays, and epaulette sharks, providing a tangible connection to marine life.
The aquarium also offers whale watching tours, providing families with the chance to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.
3. Enjoy a Day at the Boston Common and Public Garden
Boston Common and the adjacent Public Garden offer a perfect blend of history, nature, and recreation. As America's oldest public park, Boston Common has been a gathering place for centuries.
Activities to Enjoy:
Swan Boats: A ride on the iconic Swan Boats in the Public Garden's lagoon is a delightful experience for children. Operating since 1877, this tradition offers a serene break amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.
Frog Pond: In the winter, the Frog Pond transforms into a skating rink, while in the summer, it becomes a spray pool, offering year-round fun.
Historic Carousel: Kids can enjoy a ride on the classic carousel located on the Common, featuring beautifully crafted horses and other animals.
These parks are also great for a family picnic, a leisurely walk, or simply letting the kids run around and play.
4. Step Back in Time on the Freedom Trail
For families interested in history, the Freedom Trail offers a unique way to combine education with exploration. This 2.5-mile, red-brick trail leads to 16 historically significant sites, providing insights into the American Revolution.
Highlights for Kids:
Paul Revere House: This historic home offers a glimpse into the life of the famous patriot. Interactive exhibits and guides in period costumes bring history to life.
Old North Church: Known for the "one if by land, two if by sea" signal, this church is a pivotal site in the story of the American Revolution.
Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum: This engaging museum allows kids to participate in a re-enactment of the Boston Tea Party, complete with the chance to throw tea crates overboard a ship.
Walking the Freedom Trail is not only one of the quintessential things to do in Boston with kids but also a fantastic way to instill a sense of history and patriotism.
5. Unleash Creativity at the Museum of Fine Arts
The Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston is one of the largest and most comprehensive art museums in the world. While it may not seem like an obvious choice for children, the MFA offers numerous programs and exhibits specifically designed to engage young visitors.
Family-Friendly Features:
Art Labs: These interactive spaces allow children to create art inspired by the museum's collections, fostering creativity and self-expression.
Family Art Cart: Available on weekends, this cart provides activities and resources for families to explore the museum together, including sketching materials and scavenger hunts.
Story Time: The MFA hosts regular story time sessions where children can listen to tales related to the art and cultures represented in the galleries.
By introducing children to the world of art, the MFA helps cultivate an appreciation for creativity and cultural diversity.
Conclusion
Boston is a city that truly caters to children with its diverse range of activities. From museums that invite hands-on exploration to historical trails that bring the past to life, there's never a dull moment. Whether you're looking for an educational experience or just some good old-fashioned fun, these activities offer plenty of opportunities for family bonding and making lasting memories. So the next time you're planning things to do in Boston with kids, consider these exciting options and watch as your children discover the wonders of this historic city.

BRUCE!!!
HAVE YOU BEEN VANDALIZING THE SEASIDE AMUSEMENT PARKS AGAIN, BRUCE??
Honestly, buddy, whatever happened with the calliope, you’ve gotta let it go. It’s been decades. You can’t keep reliving your trauma this way. For one thing, the sheer amount of lead paint fuming up into the air just cannot be healthy. For you, or the nearby residents.
And you’re not as quick as you used to be, Bruce. I know you don’t like to hear this, but you’re 75 years old. They’re going to catch you, and they’re going to revoke your parole.

Honest Writer Thoughts
So, as of right now, I'm currently editing/rewriting a third book (unrelated to Aoh and Carousel), and then my plans are to finish and release Aoh Part 2 next year.
For the first time, probably since I started writing/imagining my own stories, I have a muse (I don't think I could ever admit who it is). (I'm also equally baffled that I have one at all. This literally happened out of nowhere). And this muse is putting a wedge between me and my books that I need to finish before taking on a new story altogether.
So what I will say is that after my third book and Aoh Part 2, be prepared for a tale of (hopefully) epic romance. 🩷

Students hunting down the social media of their teachers in the Les Mis Teachers!AU, and finding:
Combeferre's public Instagram, where he posts and IDs all the insects and animals he sees. Sometimes he uploads links to YouTube videos and news articles for his students who are following him to read. He also has a TikTok where he uploads science experiments with Joly.
Courfeyrac’s private Instagram, where he only accepts students if they've long graduated. His IG stories are loud clips of him in the club, so blurry you can't see what's going on. His IG posts are of him with his friends, as well as screenshots of himself roasting stupid people on r/politics.
Feuilly's public Instagram and Twitter, all of which repost or retweet journal publications and news articles written by his friends in the field. Once in a while he posts a piece of woodwork he's made, and Enjolras is always the first to like and comment a 👍.
Enjolras' public Instagram, which has no profile picture, no description, and only the occasional post of current news affairs with a loooong caption sharing his thoughts. One day a student finds his Twitter, which is entirely in Korean, where it's also 90% of him sharing about news that may have gone under the radar (esp. things happening in Korea/Asia in general) and then 10% of him asking the void for dating advice. No one replies to those 💔.
Bahorel's public TikTok, where he has 3 workout videos and 48 duets of him arguing with people on bad history takes. Sometimes he goes on TikTok lives with Grantaire and they talk about bullshit for 3 hours straight.
Jehan's Tumblr, which is solely dedicated to Romantic literature. They invite students to send them asks and they answer them pretty often, usually about book/show recommendations, further readings, and opinions on poets and playwrights. Every so often an anon will send a scathing ask roasting Jehan's taste, and every time it's Bahorel.
Bossuet's private Instagram, where he only allows students who've graduated to follow. Except the app keeps glitching and his students keep getting in, so every day he has to softblock them again. His profile is pretty simple though, just pictures of him and his friends, his food, yearly graduation photos with his students etc. Alas, all of them have EXTREMELY horrendous IG filters on them. He likes it, okay?!
Joly's Twitter, where he retweets mostly cute/funny animal tweets, interspersed with the occasional Twitter thread where he goes on long tangents debunking myths about historical illnesses like the black plague, the cholera epidemic etc. He's currently curating one about COVID in his drafts. It's 80 tweets long.
Grantaire's public Instagram, which has about 1,320 posts because he posts about EVERYTHING. His breakfast, a nice cloud, a store having a clearance sale (in which he will tag his friends and caption "Shall we go?") etc. He treats IG like a group chat with all his 289 followers. A lot of pictures of his friends too. Whenever his students win an award or competition he posts about them as well, just with a huge censor bar to conceal their identity. He uses up all 10 slots for the IG carousel post, with the 10th picture always being a sneaky photo taken of Enjolras that day.
Bonus:
Marius' Twitter, except it took forever to confirm it was Marius because his tweets are in four entirely different languages. The students only figured it out once they saw a Twitter thread where Enjolras and Marius were debating with each other in Korean.
Éponine's TikTok, where it only has one video thus far, and its her sending off Gavroche on his first day of school. She uses her account to roast Combeferre’s and Joly’s science experiments, as well as bully Bahorel and Grantaire on their TikTok lives.
Cosette's public Instagram, which is a pretty popular bullet journaling account. Very aesthetic; students follow her to get some decor inspo and study tips. Her IG stories are pictures with Valjean and Fantine captioned "brunch with my favourite people!! 💫💗" or blurry pictures of Enjolras coming out of his bedroom at 2pm on Saturday captioned "Bigfoot sighting #39"

So I let people submit their suggestions for dog breeds, and tbh I think I might already be sold on my final choice but I'm still going to poll the options I liked best. (I have a lot of dog opinions.)
Now, bear in mind, in narrowing my options here I'm going off a variety of factors including aesthetics/vibes, the breed roles/"jobs", and general breed temperament. (This is the part where I out myself as half just making this post to ramble about dog breeds and making inane correlations to human -Jason's, obviously- behavioral patterns.)
Breed pics & exclusions/reasons under the cut:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This animal has such a majestic journey from cute scruffy baby to a wretched looking beast and I love it. @glitter-stained mentioned it reminding you of the Baskerville hound and yes I think these animals would make for a perfect recreation of it, and the literary reference is appealing because, well, Jason.
Irish Wolfhounds are a sighthound which means they were bred to rely on speed and sight over scenting. As their name implies that hunting includes large predator animals including, purportedly, the last of the wolves in Ireland. Or, rather, their predecessor did. The original wolfhounds that these ones were inspired after and bred to recreate are technically a lost breed. Which, I mean, has some potentially interesting symbolism re: Jason's death & resurrection.
This breed is often seen as reserved and deeply intelligent, forms strong bonds with its owners and the other animals it is raised with and is not always the most adaptable to change. Independent, it's not a defender of spaces, but will defend their family and is fairly friendly with strangers. The breed comes with a historic motto "gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked" which is very fun. So, overall they're more of a "guardian" breed than a "guard" breed if you keep them around for those purposes, but that initial idea behind them is to hunt large game. The original breed may or may not have at some point been given to some roman or greek, idr, and impressed people by being able to hold their own against lions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm enamored with this image. While I understand the inclination to categorize Jason as a guard dog, Jason as a working breed has just a little certain something to it for me. @daisybell-on-a-carousel you said that these two choices were largely aesthetic based and favoring tri/multicolored coats but further examination does I think reveal some rather inspired takes here.
Right off the bat Australian Shepherds remind me of how I prefer to portray (post-resurrection) Jason with sectoral heterochromia, but like via their fur. They're also funny because they're a misnomer since they were developed in California, but the name supposedly comes from the collies from Australia and New Zealand that made up one half of their progenitor breeds. Though bred for herding it is modernly one of the most popular companion dogs in the US. This means they're generally very energetic and intelligent, and often are prone to herding people and other animals even when that's not formally their job. They can, of course, get destructive if their needs for exercise isn't met like all herding breeds.
This might be a little funny but it does somewhat feel very Pre-Crisis Jason to me? That boy needs a job to do so bad, needs to feel useful that he puts himself in that role even when he's not (entirely) needed/it's not a role they want to put him in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Special mention to the fact that I actually live near a breeder for Cane Corsos, and therefore have met and learned a great deal about them by chatting with them when they come to my job and sometimes have one of them along for the ride. They are beautiful animals. Now, I have to admit that I tend to be less in favor of the "Walking Fridge" depictions of Jason, bcs a lot of times it comes at the expense of his flippiness, and the fact that he's been remarked to fight like Dick in Hush/passed as Nightwing in BiB (despite the rest of that comic's flaws) is very dear to me, but I'm tbh genuinely impressed by this suggestion. Especially from someone who is "not an expert," @hannibal-is-my-comfort-show
Cane Corso are modernly a companion/guard breed, and a kind of mastiff. They are also extremely intelligent (the aforementioned breeder often jokes that his dogs are smarter than he is) and historically have had a role in hunting large game as well as protecting and herding cattle. Now, for anyone unfamiliar with dog breeding lore, herding dogs HAVE to be very intelligent. And part of this particular breed's standard for registration requires them to be indifferent to gunfire, tranquil to inoffensive strangers, but aggressive in defending their owners.
So I think we're hitting some very interesting points here. While I'm not discounting it for main continuity, I think perhaps would be a good match for, say, AK!Jason?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is Daisybell's other suggestion, and the Australian Cattle Dog has much of the same appeal as the Shepherd on an aesthetic level and in its being another working breed. This one, however, was actually bred in Australia. Notably, it was bred to herd via biting and has been known to nip running children and forms very strong, protective bonds with its owners. Cattle dogs, like a majority of herding breeds, require consistent training and structure or else they can get a bit destructive. However, these ones do also have some decently high standards that it can't be too repetitive and needs to be thoroughly engaging for the pooch.
Things that appeal I think is that they have a shorter coat than the Shepherds, and Post-Crisis Jason (esp as Robin) as a bitey herder does sound rather appropriate, I think. Very akin to the previous herder it's something of Jason putting himself into a job because he sees something that he thinks need to be done, AND his methods are something that can be seen as scarier for many people despite the dog's overall friendly face. which dovetails nicely with the way his new origin made him less popular.
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I... sure hope the wide variety of images I've posted here explain why I didn't include "Mutt" in this poll. A suggestion like, idk, American Bull Terrier & Black Lab mix (which would classify as a mutt, rather than a hybrid) it would be something more substantial for me to work with. The whole point of crowdsourcing this question is to avoid having to work out the details like that myself. (I mean, partly, it was more I was at work and my code-switch-y brain suddenly could not recall like 90% of my dog breed knowledge.) Shout out to the like, 2-3 people who did specify "(breed) mix" in their suggestions.
That said, there is a strong non-zero chance (as in, I really wasn't ever planning on having Jason as, like, a breed standard/pedigreed animal) that I reference something like "not being full-blooded," but fundamentally what I'm looking for in my asking is/was a base breed. Dogs are such wonderfully varied creatures that have their jobs literally bred into them and their visually and and literally so incredibly varied in size and coloration... you see the dilemma right? A mutt can be anything, regardless of the way they're traditionally portrayed in, say, Lady and the Tramp or, like, Balto (who yeah is half wolf but he's still a mutt), there's realistically too much variance to the concept.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ahhh, pibbies, pibbies, pibbies... A rather beloved breed for me, I grew up with two and was (and am), in fact, a very staunch advocate for the breed... within some reason there are definitely some people who go to far with it like when they fake the Dog's breed in order to sneak it into places where regulations forbid them. Seriously, way to make the work of getting them accepted harder. So, anyways, when I tell you that I know their history rather extensively, and thematically I see the vision, I mean it.
"Pit Bull" as many know the term, is actually an umbrella term that covers about four-five different breeds (sometimes including some bulldogs) and their respective crossbreeds, and nearly every mixed mutt that has a more muscular build and square face is often labeled under the category of "pit bull type." This is a much narrower field, but similar to the previous problem.
And yet it's almost perfect that way, right? "Pit Bull" doesn't have pedigreed breed standards in the way most breeds on this list would, but I'm going to be honest with you, my entire rejection here is aesthetic. This applies to bulldogs as well as the pitties that are more bulldog-like in figure, I am, once again, not exactly big on the not-exactly-canon walking fridge who's got all this strength and fights like Batman. That said, however, pitties are definitely the perfect breed for, I think, GK!Jason who does kinda display more of that aesthetic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Why are these three, completely different dogs in the same entry?"
I could give you a deep, introspective analysis about Rottweilers, German Shepherds, and Dobermans, however my issue with these options are all the same, and unfortunately... sigh. I'm not immune to propaganda. I'm sorry animals, but I cannot see a black coat with brown or tan points and not immediately think "That dog's a fucking cop."
So, y'know. That's off the table for me. Would be a great choice for Lobdell's version of Jason though, the cop-ass-kissing bullshit motherfucker that he is! ... Special shout out though to "he kinda built like a doberman," the wide chest and slim waist? Yeah, I see it. Especially Gotham War!Jason, I think that's a worthwhile comparison.
Other mentions:
Pomeranian - Very fun. I'm reminded of this classic post. Alternatively, please play Ghost Trick:
Tumblr media
Jason, don't lie, you're not a to- *shot*
Yorkshire Terrier/any other "toy" companion breed - While there is something to be said about itty bitty baby Jason being brought on board exclusively because Bruce was lonely and needed something or someone to fill the space after Dick left, No. I have nothing against companion breeds, but they feel a bit less... survivable on a metaphoric level? Considering Jason's history, the vibes just don't hit for me.
Chihuahua - I'm not going to lie to you, I don't' even consider this a serious suggestion. There's no contender. He has nothing of the breed characteristics. Once again, a small companion breed, so, no. At best the nervous little beasties serve as a watch animal (as in, makes a lot of noise and alerts the owners about intruders), and while I'm not going to let a conquistador have any validity, supposedly they were bred and sold as food by the Aztecs--which I only mention because it reminds me of that "feeding cats to coyotes" post and people correlating it to "feeding Robins to Joker." A more interesting fact however is that they are one of two breeds that still seem to retain the unique ancient genome sequence of pre-colonial Native American dog breeds. Regardless...
If I were to do a smaller breed I would likely choose something like... I dunno, a Boykin or American Water Spaniel? Maybe a Small Munsterlander? Hmmm, yeah, the overall versatility of the S. Munsterlander would probably be good. All those breeds are hunting dogs but Spaniels are mostly used for flushing, but the S. Munsterlander's are pretty good for training into just about any role people have for a small hunting dog. A Boykin would probably be higher on my choice list of Spaniels as well, given their tendency to take their time before pushing a rather aggressive flush which is a very Jason-like behavior. They also have some pretty strong fetch instincts too.

Amusement park headcannons for Jofoes!
Tumblr media
•••🎡•••
Dio scoffs at the crowds and demands the park staff treat him as a VIP. They keep trying to tell him you just have to purchase a special pass to skip lines.
Kars sees the park as a monument to human stupidity. Though he will be pretty interested in the technological advancements used in the rides.
Wamuu does not understand the rides nor why humans seem to derive so much joy from them, but he will like any attractions that involve a test of strength (like a high striker or strongman game).
Esidisi doesn’t care much for the rides and sticks with Kars. They speak in some ancient language as they murmur praises and critiques of the machinery. The two end up getting the attention of some other people as they assume by their clothing they’re characters from one of the rides.
Pucci remains calm and composed but secretly looks forward to spending time with Dio. He gets a headache from all the commotion going on around them though.
Diavolo is immediately suspicious of the crowd and tries to blend in to avoid being noticed. Doppio is the one who enjoys the idea of the park, though Diavolo hates the unpredictability of it. Doppio gets a hat and a tshirt while at a gift shop- which Diavolo hates.
Kira hates the idea of being surrounded by noisy people. He sticks to the quietest areas of the park, like flower gardens or shaded benches. He can already feel his nails growing.
Diego treats the park like it’s beneath him, but it becomes clear he’s looking for a competition. He challenges others to beat his scores at carnival games or ride the scariest attractions without flinching, all while trying to act uninterested.
Valentine insists on going to see any historically themed rides. He walks with an air of dignity, even in a chaotic park. He’d enjoy any gallery sections or interactive viewing experience type attractions.
Dio rides the biggest roller coasters without flinching, just to prove his superiority. He mocks anyone who screams or hesitates.
Kars claims the rides are beneath him but enjoys the adrenaline rush. He remains stoic, even on the scariest attractions.
Wamuu keeps a straight face on thrill rides but does enjoy them. He’s interested in what humans consider to be a show of bravery.
Esidisi doesn’t care about the ride so long as he’s next to Kars. He’ll act just as unimpressed but will be smug if he sees anyone get scared.
Pucci definitely prefers gentler rides but agrees to join Dio on a few coasters (he told him he’d just watch from a park bench but Dio dragged him on), quietly clutching the safety bar while reciting prayers.
Diavolo hates being out of control, so he avoids coasters entirely. Doppio wants to experience at least a few rides, so he convinces Diavolo to let him be for a little. He gets motion sick.
Kira flat out refuses to go on any thrill rides. He sticks to the carousel and ferris wheel, enjoying the quiet and simplicity.
Diego wishes the rides were scarier. He unintentionally gains a small following of girls who fawn over how brave he is. He only encourages it by recounting stories of his most intense horse racing days.
Valentine will only ride attractions that feel "respectable," like ferris wheels. He uses the ferris wheel to deliver long speeches about unity and greatness to whoever was unfortunate enough to get seated with him.
Carnival Games
Dio wins everything effortlessly. He walks away with armfuls of prizes and flaunts them. He later tosses them though.
Kars learns the mechanics of the games instantly and dominates, but finds the rewards trivial. He gives his prizes to Wamuu.
Wamuu loves games like the hammer slam. He accidentally breaks the machine and apologizes but is a bit confused why it’s so “easy”.
Esidisi gets overly competitive, drawing a crowd with his dramatic reactions when he wins or loses.
Pucci calmly plays a few games but doesn’t care much about winning. He’s more focused on keeping the group from causing too much damage. He convinces Dio at one point to stop pettily winning all the prizes before the kids at the park get a turn.
Diavolo doesn’t want to participate at first, irritated that the games are rigged. When he sees Kira look at a cat themed prize though, he goes at one of the machines until he wins it.
Kira avoids games altogether, considering them beneath him. He watches from a distance, annoyed by the noise. He thanks Diavolo for the prize he gave him, despite Diavolo insisting it was just an easy win (as if he didn’t spend half an hour yelling at the claw machine).
Diego is very competitive and enjoys beating the people at the stalls. He accuses the games of being rigged against him when he loses.
Valentine wins at least one game to set an example of "American excellence" and gives his prize to a random child, delivering a heartfelt speech about kindness.
Food Stalls
Dio refuses to eat the "peasant food" offered in the park.
Kars considers the food primitive and does not eat it.
Wamuu will try any type of food at least once, but he mostly just sticks to meaty dishes.
Esidisi wants spicy food and complains there’s nothing hot enough for his taste.
Pucci politely declines any junk food offers.
Diavolo doesn’t eat in public, but Doppio buys ice cream and accidentally drops it on his shoe, which infuriates Diavolo.
Kira brings his own packed lunch to avoid eating messy park food. He eats it in the most secluded spot he can find.
Diego is one of the only ones who knows how to enjoy some good park food.
Valentine chooses a classic hot dog.
Afterwards-
The group is banned from the amusement park for causing property damage, breaking ride equipment, and scaring the staff.
