Extreme temperature-related deaths expected to soar in the U.S. without stronger climate action
A study published in JAMA Network Open examines excess mortality linked to extreme temperatures in the U.S. Researchers project a rise in heat-related deaths, particularly among older adults and non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic populations, due to increasing greenhouse gas emissions. Between 2008 and 2019, annual average extreme heat days were 13.3, expected to rise significantly by 2035-2065. Under high emissions, projected deaths could increase from 30.9 million to over 22,936 annually. The findings highlight the urgent need for climate change strategies to protect vulnerable populations.

Some man who didn’t speak English came into the store and was trying to find turtle food and I found it for him and at checkout he PULLS the TURTLE out of his POCKET. The confidence of this….

Thinking abt some demonym stuff I've been locking in whenever I'm doing fic research.
Like - I knew for awhile that Latino ≠ Hispanic, they have overlapping populations, but they are not the same thing. Something I think a lot of white/adjacent USAmericans get mixed up all the time.
Hispanic means basically any hispanophone / dominantly Spanish-speaking group. So that includes places like Spain, Mexico, Costa Rica, etc.
Latino refers to diaspora (in the US) from Latin America - so Spaniards (more specifically, Spanish Americans) are not considered Latino. This group can include Brazilian Americans, for example, even though they come from a dominantly Portuguese-speaking country. (Though this IS a controversial use case - so generally, one should use a more specific demonym unless individual gave you the OK around 'em. Demonyms like Brazilian American or brasileiros americanos...)

IT’S THAT ONE AGAIN. Weren’t they angry with her the first time around? She didn’t let them get away with thievery and well, it’s a bit foolish on their part to circle back to the scene of crime, isn’t it? Not that she would call the police on them if they tried swiping from the store again.
( It’d feel like an overkill anyway, calling the police on a kid of all people. There are worst perpetrators to encounter and the police are...well, they're stupidly component in the most unnecessary times and useless in times of actual need. )
And besides, Byan hasn't tried shoplifting again. Or at least they haven’t while she’s on shift. Annie isn’t quite sure what changed their mind, but she supposes it is…nice to know there’s one more person out there who doesn’t consider her completely mad and therefore unapproachable. And said person goes out of their way to actually see her; although what exactly for, is again, beyond her.
That and they’re asking about…nachos. Nachos. Annie hasn’t had those in years, but they taste good, if she remembers correctly. Good if gotten from the right restaurant and that takes time to find too. It takes a bit of time and a bit of luck, and also a bit of… “Only if there are chilaquiles on the menu. They taste…better than nachos. And they have less cheese on them. Ellos también son más picantes.”

interacting with the public (retail job) really drives home just how little fucking spanish I speak/understand whenever a hispanic customer without much english tries to communicate with me 😭 I end up just saying “lo siento, pequeño español” which I know is NOT the right way to say “sorry, I only know a little spanish” but it’s the best I’ve got absnsjsksbbsjsh

“America has no culture” is an inherently racist statement. Especially when talking about California, which has enormous populations (yes, plural) of Hispanic and Asian immigrants.
It’s such a self report that you see the American hegemony, the American monolith, as a singularly white entity that’s worthy of scorn. I want that person to look at the Black American NYC Miku design and tell me with their full chest that that isn’t culture. Especially when modern pop culture owes so much to Black American culture — hip hop, language, streetwear and fashion, pop music, jazz — as is actively erasing their roots, saying all of America has no culture is a dumbass statement.
Also, “all the US Mikus are dressed in generic casual street style for coolish weather.” The original Brazilian Miku is wearing sunglasses, a crop top, short shorts, a bikini, and flip flops you absolute dunce. If you’re gonna be rude at least be consistent.
