Francis Kinloch in the Müller-Bonstetten letters: Part 1

Here is the first batch of translated instances where Francis Kinloch is mentioned in letters written to Karl Viktor von Bonstetten by Johannes von Müller, a gay Swiss historian who Kinloch lived with while studying in Geneva. Throughout this period (early 1775 onwards), Müller is attempting to write his history of Switzerland, and the American colonies are starting to actively rebel against England.

The original letters were mostly written in German (source), with some translated later into French (source). I have transcribed and translated most of the mentions, but there's quite a lot, so I'm going to divide this into several posts. (@john-laurens - enjoy!)

My translations below, with the German and/or French transcripts under the cut. As always, corrections and improvements are greatly appreciated!

10 March 1775

I advance in the sciences; you love me, because I do you; Kinloch, who gives away his heart so sparingly, addresses his letters to the beloved of my heart,* and we see each other daily [...] When I am by Kinloch’s side at Bonnet’s, and spend an hour talking with him, I am happy and cheerful; thus, says the Quran, does a lightning bolt suddenly illuminate the darkest of nights, but the shadow becomes darker after him.

*This follows a mention in an earlier undated 1775 letter that Kinloch asserted he needed at least one year before he could call anyone "friend". Clearly it happened in a matter of weeks here.

18 Aug 1775

…and Kinloch’s questions made me more aware of many points of our constitutions, especially our lack of political arithmeticians. […] Keep well. Kinloch will write to you soon.

21 Aug 1775

If cruel fate separates Kinloch from me, I will hope to have 25 to 30 louis more per year, with which I will be able to carry out this plan of study by spending the summer months in some of the cantons.

23 Aug 1775

I also do not have time [in this letter] to continue my observations along the mark, the Zurich lake, into the drawing rooms of Füsslin, Heidegger, Gessner, Hirzel, Bodmer, etc., nor to assure you sufficiently of Gessner’s friendship; nor to tell you how much I augment my knowledge of Helvetia [Switzerland], and with what pleasure I read Livius with Kinloch; nor to paint Kinloch’s enthusiasm* for you, and his anger with me because it has been so long since I wrote to you; nor my irreconcilable hatred for you, B. To declare to you in very thunderous and defeating expressions that, contrary to your word and honour, despite my repeated requests in the name of the holiest friendship, you have committed the atrocious crime of not writing me any letters to this day. Write to me today, therefore!

*The archaic meaning of the German Enthusiasmus is more along the lines of fervour, inspiration, or passionate feeling than the modern “enthusiasm” suggests.

“Thursday” [1775]*

We are waiting at present for a letter from Mr Boone, which will inform us whether we, Kinloch and I, may travel together in France, or if I must stay where I am. In the latter case, I will quietly await some opportunity to travel with an Englishman, which would let me see Europe and fix me some income. If Mr Boone and other friends do not find anyone, I will go to England with K at around the end of next year and I will not leave him even if he goes to America.

*The exact dating of this letter is unclear, but it is placed here in the source. 

Wednesday, Dec 1775

At this very moment, Kinloch is writing a letter to Mr Boone, which might influence my future destination. If I cannot live as I had hoped, according to what I have told you, I would hope that in the case that I must spend my life in solitude, that I may share yours; but that is the way to live!

26 Dec 1775

I find myself in the midst of great doubts. Kinloch cannot stay here past the end of March; we are waiting for letters from England to inform us whether we have enough money to travel together. The American matters make it very uncertain. And even when this journey is over, this unrest will hinder us from carrying out many projects. And now also comes the newly confirmed expedition against Carolina. In this land, so say the letters, is everything in such disarray, that reason has completely lost its power, all courts have decided that no law shall be enforced anymore, all the stations have mixed together, and the clergy preach nothing but rebellion. And the rebellious faction is so powerful that they have decided to send all women and children into the interior of the country, to burn the whole city of Charlestown to ash, and to fight the English over its ruins. Imagine Kinloch’s heart, and his noble mother in this horrid land, fleeing, exposed to all the malice of the soldiers, all the bouts of depredation, hunger and shortages of all kinds. It is very possible that Kinloch himself will lose everything, that his plantations will be laid waste. Imagine for yourself what we must think and feel about all of this. 

9 Jan 1776

We have letters from England that confirm the degree to which the entire coast of the North American sea is given to flames and devastation; they also state that the fleet against Carolina has already sailed. Kinloch and I have developed a project for our destination, which will, in all likelihood, be carried out for our shared benefit. At the beginning of April, my friend will go to France to a provincial town; I will go to Genthod to the wise men (these we, i.e. those from Genthod and I, are still keeping a secret at this time on account of certain people). Towards autumn, I will go to Marseille or Lyon, find Kinloch there, go with him to Rome and from there through Tyrol and Bavaria down into the Netherlands, right to the sea. In this way, I will be able to complete most of my material collecting in the summer and have an educational and enjoyable winter. And beyond that? you will ask me. Within one year, it will become clear if America is still inhabitable, if Lord North is still prime minister, if Kinloch will settle in England or America. We will decide accordingly.

19 Feb 1776

Your letters always bring me great pleasure, but it has been a long time since any letter or occurrence has caused me as much pleasure as your second-to-last one did. Your eloquence is Demosthenic when friendship has inspired you, but your heart is full of the greatest and noblest virtues. Bonnet and Kinloch felt a real enthusiasm for you. I however am more determined than ever to follow your advice. [Lists several of his good fortunes.] Mr Bonnet, Mrs Bonnet and Kinloch and all my best friends, besides philosophy and politics - to whom do I owe all of these? Ask yourself!

Si Mr. Boone et d'autres amis n'en trouvent point, j'irai en Angleterre avec K. sur la fin de l'année prochaine et je ne le quitterai pas même, quand it va en Amérique.

Gegenwärtig befinde ich mich in sehr großen Zweifeln. Länger als bis im Märzen kann Kinloch nicht hier bleiben; wir erwarten aus England Briefe, ob wir Geldes genug haben, mit einander zu reisen. Die amerikanischen Sachen machen es sehr ungewiß. Und wenn auch diese Reisen zu Ende find, so werden diese Unruhen uns an der Ausführung vieler Projekte hindern. Nun kommt noch die neulich beschlossene Expedition gegen Karolina. In diesem Land, wir haben Briefe, ist alles in solcher Unordnung, daß der Rath vollkommen seine Gewalt verloren, alle Gerichte beschlossen sind, kein Gesetz mehr vollstreckt wird, alle Stände sich vermengt haben, und die Geistlichen nichts als Aufruhr predigen. Auch ist die rebellische Faction so muthig, daß sie beschlossen haben, alle Weiber und Kinder ins innere Land zu versenden, die ganze Stadt Karlstown in Asche zu verwandeln, und über den Ruinen derselben sich mit den Engländern zu schlagen. Stellen Sie sich Kinlochs Herz vor, und seine edle Mutter in diesem fürchterlichen Land, in der Flucht, ausgesetzt allem Muthwillen der Soldaten, allen Anfällen der Verwüstung, dem Hunger und dem Mangel.  Aus England haben wir Briefe, welche bestätigen, wasmaßen das ganze Ufer der nordamerikanischen See den Flammen und der Verwüstung gewidmet sey; auch sagen Sie, die Flotte gegen Karolina sey bereits abgesegelt. Kinloch und ich haben über unsre Bestimmung ein Project entworfen, welches allem Ansehen nach zu unserm gemeinschaftlichen Nutzen ausgeführt werden wird. Anfangs Aprillens geht mein Freund nach Frankreich in eine Provinzialstadt; ich nach Genthod zu den Weisen (dieses halten wir, d. i. die von Genthod und ich gewisser Leute wegen noch zur Zeit geheim). Gegen den Herbst gehe ich nach Marseille oder Lyon, finde daselbst Kinloch, gehe mit ihm nach Rom und von da durchs Tirol und Bayern hinunter in die Niederlande bis ans Meer. So werde ich diesen Sommer meine meisten Materialiensammlungen vollenden können und einen lehrreichen und `vergnügten Winter haben. Und was ferner? werden Sie mich fragen. In Jahresfrist wird es sich zeigen, ob Amerika noch wohnbar, ob Lord North noch Staatsminister sey, ob Kinloch sich in England oder in Amerika niederlassen werde. Accordingly werden wir uns entschließen.

Vous avez l'éloquence de Demosthène quand l'amitié vous inspire, et votre cœur est ce qu'il y a au monde de plus noble et de meilleur. Bonnet et Kinloch vous aiment avec enthousiasme, et moi, je suis plus déterminé que jamais à suivré en tout vos conseils. […] Mais, et Bonnet, et Mad. Bonnet, et Kinloch, et mes meilleurs amis, et les lumières que j'ai acquises en philosophie et en politique, à qui dois-je tout cela, mon ami? vous le savez.

Ihre Briefe machen mir immer sehr viel Vergnügen, aber seit langer Zeit hat kein Brief und keine Begebenheit mir so viel Freude verschafft, als Ihr vorletzter. Soult and Mortier Correspondence (Part 1)

I’ve been reading a biography on Mortier written by his great nephew Frignet Despréaux. It contains letters written to and from him, including lots with his pen pal Soult. I wanted to post some of my favorite ones between them for my own recording purposes and because yes

(Also, it’s all originally in French, so I’ve been using Google Translate which can have weird wording and mistakes 🙏)

The first major chunks of correspondence begins when Mortier joins the Army of the Danube in Switzerland in 1799 as a Brigade General under Division General Soult for the 3rd division. They were already good friends by this time.

On Prairial 30 (June 18), Mortier puts it in his Notes, "I slept in Birmensdorf, at Soult headquarters. On the 1st Messidor (June 19), I went to Stallikon to take command of the right brigade of the 3rd division, made up of the 1st and 23rd line and the 1st dragoon regiment.” We read in the changes of the Historical Bulletin of June 18, of this 3rd division commanded by Soult: "Brigadier General Mortier arrived at the division on Prairial 30 (June 18); he replaced brigade leader Quétard, who was serving as brigadier general and who moved to the 2nd division.” We also find the arrival at the division, on June 10, of Captain Franceschi, Soult's aide-de-camp; Pierre Soult, his brother's aide-de-camp, taken prisoner on June 4, was exchanged shortly after.

This next one involves more correspondence of Mortier following Soult’s command with a litte disagreement.

Mortier carried out the prescribed reconnaissance on the same day and reported to Soult: "I did not find the front of the line at Rifferschwyl; according to the order of General Chabran, a battalion of this half-brigade bivouacked in front of Sihlbrück near Hirzel, four companies to the left and in front of Sihlbrück, the other four companies behind this village and the Sihl; the half-brigade which occupied these positions having moved up the lake, it was replaced by the 1st of the line. General Chabran had Langnau and Horgen occupied; he pushes patrols as far as Thalwyl and Kilchberg. I believe that by having Adlischwyl occupied by a strong post, the aim of the general in chief would also be fulfilled, since the enemy would not be able to carry his reconnaissance beyond Kilchberg; Do you not believe, on the contrary, that by establishing troops in this last place, they would be a little adventurous? ....” Soult replied to Mortier in the evening: "I do not believe that the intentions of the general in chief will be fulfilled if we limit ourselves to occupying Adlischwyl; it is necessary to take the post to Kilchberg. I will have the pleasure of seeing you tomorrow morning and we will agree together on its establishment without it being compromised.”

Then, changes on which division Soult would command happened. He switches from 3rd to 4th division (and mortier follows), but then later has to change back as read here. This causes Mortier to take on an entire division by himself!

On August 26, Mortier was designated by Massena to take command of the 4th division. Rheinwald wrote to him, through Soult: "General Soult having orders to take provisional command of the 3rd division, the general in chief has intended you, Citizen General, to take provisional command of the 4th division until the return of General Soult from whom I invite you to immediately take instructions relating to your new command. The intention of the general in chief is that you correspond with General Soult on everything that concerns your command.”

And Mortier definitely followed that apparently too much because Soult later writes this.

The day before, from Lachen, Soult had written to Mortier: "By passing through me the reports which must go to the general in chief, we are losing precious time. The good of the service seems to me to require that you do them directly, then notifying me. I ask you to follow this course from now on, and until General Masséna has relieved me of the command of one of the two divisions which it is impossible for me to retain due to the extent they cover.”

And so Mortier responds with... reporting to Soult. He even writes this at the beginning of the letter.

In accordance with these prescriptions, Mortier, at the moment when he received the above order from Masséna, wrote to him [Soult]: "General Soult, with whom I have the order to correspond, being very distant, I will have the honor to inform you directly, my General, when something new happens on the line of my posts….”

Next, here is a letter Soult sent to Mortier on New Years according to the French Republican calender.

On September 23, Soult wrote to him: "You can, my dear Comrade, give command of the right brigade of your division to General Drouet; however this arrangement can only be provisional and only to avoid the displacement of General Brunet to whom I think that you will give his rank to the right as soon as you can do so; soon the movements that the division will make will give you the power to do so. For a Happy New Year, I ask you for the continuation of your friendship.”

Later, Mortier gives back the 4th division to Soult and returns under him as Brigade General. Soult then writes to Mortier…

"I warn you that I am going to Zurich at this moment, according to the invitation made to me by the general in chief. On my return, I will go directly to join you in Mels.... I greet you friendly while waiting for the pleasure of seeing you, which will be after tomorrow morning at the latest.”

He [Mortier] had written on October 11 to Brunet: "I am expecting General Soult tomorrow; It will be very pleasant for me, by giving him back command of his division, to see us once again reunited.”

Uh. I just want to put this next one here because even though Mortier’s no longer commanding a whole division, his name was still listed in the general order along with Soult for the 3rd division :3

Masséna issued, on November 4, the general order of the army: "The general in chief hastened to announce to the army that the 2nd and 3rd divisions, commanded by generals Loison, Soult and Mortier, took 400 prisoners and took 2 pieces of cannon from the enemy on the day of the 9th of this month (October 31) on the border of Grisons.”

Ok, this is the last one. Basically, Soult later has to leave the Army of the Danube for that in Italy and he sends Mortier a sad byebye note :(

Soult informed Mortier, on December 17, that he had received a letter of advice announcing to him that he had to surrender to the army of Italy: "I admit to you that it is with the greatest regret that I leave this army; the familiarity I had with the theater in which we have been waging war for eight years had familiarized me with the most difficult localities; the banks of the Rhine had charms for me that I very much doubt I would find on the Apennines and on the banks of the Mediterranean: new country, new faces, new climate to study, what's new! I think all this will be new to me for a long time.”

“I am infinitely sensitive to the expressions of friendship that you give me; believe that, on my side, this feeling is at least as great. I move away from you with difficulty and will form wishes as ardent as they are sincere for our speedy reunion; but, while waiting for it to take place, my mind will often cross the space which will separate us to return in idea to you.”

We will see later that Masséna successively obtained the passage to the Army of Italy of a certain number of generals of the Army of the Danube, among whom Mortier was included on February 16, 1800. Moreau complains about this to the First Consul, January 2: "General Masséna takes almost all the generals from here and, as you think, he does not take the worst ones.”

Week 11 ( Question 1)

My group came up with the slogan of " bridge the gap from theory to action "focusing on week 2 topic for our manifesto.Instead of drawing our manifesto , we printed pictures such as a person with many wires , a bridge and several skiers to reflect on our slogan . We all agree that it best represent our manifesto as a bridge shows the it helps connected the positive in design making . We were going for a simple manifesto regarding the printed pictures of how as a designer our values are important to us to be motivated to become better designers.Despite having positive values such as collaboration and reflection , personally felt that we could have rephrase others words more positively and put better headlines resulting in a more meaningful manifesto. Including the values of principals of a good designer such as empathy,Continuous Learning,Innovation and Risk-Taking and Passion and Dedication.

“You're a failure "by Emily Hirzel, a manifesto I look up to dearly. Being a design student especially , I tend to be hard on my self by seeing failure as a negative component and that with failure it can never be a positive outcome.However with this manifesto , is a unique one as it explains that failure is not the end once there's mistake being made in my works. With mistakes made I am able to improve as a designer and view it as a new learning experience.This manifesto has helped me in being more open to making mistakes and learning from it .As at the end failure is key than not making a single mistake at all to become a good designer.

Week three for CTS B was very memorable as the topic was on "This Is How You Connect Practice with Society”. It was important too as we could solve social issues despite being a designer. I always thought that only journalists could help solve these problems. Our advantage as designers is more wider as we get to design items or prototype to help fix these issues. By doing these short duration videos covering on the issues could potentially help change the world which as a designer I would like to contribute in the future.

In connection to studio module , there's a few items to get done such as brochure ,poster and image .It was quite overwhelming for me at the start.However after learning about manifesto , I decided to use it to good use by creating my own support system with manifesto and know that my feelings can always be supported in a positive way.Overall , this has made me to think that manifesto is a great way to unwind my thoughts and support me whenever I feel overwhelmed when receiving many assignments to be done.

In conclusion, manifesto are great tool for designers like me to practice more often.

Johanna Heusser Spyri

Johanna Heusser Spyri è stata la scrittrice svizzera diventata famosa in tutto il mondo per aver creato il personaggio letterario di Heidi, uno dei libri più letti al mondo che, tradotto in oltre 55 lingue, continua a ispirare film, cartoni animati, spettacoli teatrali, musical e molto altro.

Sebbene scrivesse storie per l’infanzia e l’adolescenza, le sue opere forniscono uno sguardo critico delle condizioni di vita durante la prima fase della rivoluzione industriale in Svizzera.

Il sottotitolo di molti suoi libri, infatti, è Eine Geschichte für Kinder und auch für Solche, welche die Kinder lieb haben (Una storia per bambini e anche per coloro che amano i bambini).

Anche se ha iniziato a scrivere dopo i quarant’anni, ha pubblicato quarantotto pubblicazioni tra romanzi e opuscoli.

Nata col nome di Johanna Louise Heusser, il 12 giugno 1827 a Hirzel, nella campagna vicino a Zurigo, era la quarta di sei figli e figlie del medico Johann Jacob e della poeta e scrittrice Meta Heusser-Schweizer, la cui Cronaca familiare è stata una preziosa fonte di informazioni sui primi anni della vita della figlia.

Durante la sua giovinezza aveva studiato lingue, letteratura e preso lezioni di pianoforte. Era anche stata in un collegio per perfezionare il suo francese, ma il rigore e la disciplina mal si adattavano alla sua indole vivace e irriverente.

Nel 1852 ha sposato l’avvocato e giornalista Johann Bernhard Spyri, amico di Richard Wagner, da cui ebbe un figlio, Bernhard Diethelm, morto a soli 32 anni, nel 1884, nello stesso anno in cui aveva perso anche il marito.

A Zurigo svolgeva un’attiva vita sociale, partecipava a serate letterarie e eventi mondani, ma la sua indole, che mal si adattava alla città, ne soffriva molto.

Nel 1871, all’età di 44 anni, ha pubblicato, sotto pseudonimo, il suo primo racconto, Ein Blatt auf Vronys Grab (Un foglio sulla tomba di Vrony).

Nel 1878 ha scritto il suo primo libro per l’infanzia.

Amante della natura, aveva soggiornato più volte con l’amica Anna Elisa von Salis-Hössli a Jenins, nel distretto di Maienfeld, dove amava fare escursioni. È stato in quei luoghi e ascoltando i racconti delle persone del posto, che le era arrivata l’ispirazione per la sua storia di Heidi, tratta dalla storia vera di una bambina vivace e allegra che viveva in cima a un monte.

La storia di Heidi, pubblicata in due raccolte nel 1880 e nel 1881, Heidis Lehr- und Wanderjahre (Gli anni di formazione e di peregrinazioni di Heidi) e Heidi kann brauchen was es gelernt hat (Heidi può servirsi di ciò che ha imparato), ebbe da subito un grande successo. È stata la prima opera pubblicata col suo vero nome. 

Molto attiva anche nel sociale, si è dedicata, fino alla fine ad aiutare le persone bisognose e malate.

Prima di morire, decise di bruciare gran parte dei suoi scritti e documenti personali. La sua biografia, infatti, si basa oggi, in gran parte sugli scritti della madre e dei personaggi del mondo della cultura che l’hanno conosciuta.

Si è spenta a Zurigo il 7 luglio 1901.

La sua eredità è gestita dall’Istituto Svizzero Media e Giovani, associazione che promuove nelle giovani generazioni la lettura e lo studio.
