🖤 Photobooth 🖤
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the modern AU, little Runo is often dragged into many shenanigans with the Naranbaatars' youngest son.
However, today is a simple, wholesome date day! 💕
After a buzzilion episodes these two eventually end up together 🤣 and here they're on a little date, wearing matching hoodies, taking couple Photobooth photos together.
Also they have a doggie together.
"Pom Pom the Pom Pom" 🖤
Creds to @celestialkiri for PomPom!
Once we played around with the idea, I was just itching to see the fluffy manic cotton ball!

Object/Place Research Task
Photographer Notes
Edward Burtynsky
Canadian Contemporary Landscape Photographer that usually shoots in large format (8x10) that deals with the impact human intervention has had on the natural environment
Large scale landscapes that show loads of detail, very immersive and surreal to look at
Project "water" deals particularly with different man-made water systems
Chris Leslie
Accomplished photographer and filmmaker that has documented stories from around the world
Particular recognition for work documenting the disappearing landscape of Glasgow due to mass demolition in 60s and 70s.
people in poverty moved into new high rise flats in an attempt to improve their quality of life - captures difference in time comparing utopian solution to poverty to them now where they aren't taken care of and rotting away
Challenges: access to the buildings (people may not want their privacy being invaded by a photographer), safety concerns due to old buildings not being structurally sound
Mandy Barker
Deals specifically with global warming and pollution issue of marine plastic and has a very extensive body of work
reaches out to communities in order to get the vast amounts of waste she shoots for her projects
shoots a lot in studio and composite her images together
"Penalty" project is a double entendre and refers to both the literal subject of football and the world cup which the footballs are associated with but also the consequences that they are having on the environment
Andy Hughes
Another photographer that deals with the subject of marine plastic and trash, particularly washed up trash on beaches and coastlines (intertidal zone)
"Dominant Wave Theory" marked a significant milestone as one of the pioneering photographic monographs specifically focused on the subject of plastic pollution.
Challenges: possibly making the plastic look aesthetically pleasing like he does in his photos, may have to cover large areas looking for a specific item
Andy vs Mandy
Mandy shoots in the studio the composites her images together, where as Andy shoots on location using various additional lighting, especially overpower flash to create moody dynamic images - two very different styles and approaching the same items
Andy thinks more about scale and uses depth of field creatively and his backgrounds are important in his images
Mandy combines scientific facts within her work
Bernd & Hilla Becher
German photography duo that documented disappearing architecture across north America and Europe over the course of 40 years. Structures usually included various water tanks
Typologies with repeating composition, shooting angle and exposure allowed differences between the structures to be easily seen - fair comparison
When lined up next to each other, its like their own individualities shine through
2. Expanded Analysis of Photographers
Hiroshi Sugimoto
Tumblr media
Sugimoto is a Japanese photographer and architect. He often combines his knowledge of structure and form of buildings and spaces from his architect background into his images as they are very well composed, clean and lined up. He also experiments a lot with different camera techniques and the optical effects these have on his images - such as long exposure. This is certainly true of his "theaters" series, a typology-type project he began in the late 70s where he would showcase many different classic American movie theatres built in the 1920s-30s using a large format camera on a very long exposure, using only the light of the projection as a lightsource. The results in very surreal, almost chilling photographs. His master use of light and long exposure (representing time) in perfect unison is symbolic of time passing and the effect it has had on these outdated forms of entertainment as modern culture had been growing and evolving.
Michael Wolf
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wolf is a German-born photographer and photojournalist. His work focuses largely on contemporary city living, especially in densely populated asian countries. This overcrowding of the cities he works in has become a main focus behind his work and how he approaches his subjects (being buildings and complexes) in order to highlight this. This is particularly evident in his series of images called "Architecture of Density" - which was taken in Hong Kong and published in the form of a book in 2012. The photographer expertly captures the spatial experience of the city's inhabitants by removing any sky from the frame and flattening the space until it becomes more like a series of patterns rather than a building. This results in a feeling of endlessness in terms of size which is an amazing way of visually demonstrating the sheer scale of overpopulation happening in Hong Kong.

Papa Stour Island I
Monday 3rd July
At 9 this morning I took the 40 minute ferry crossing to Papa Stour. There was just one other vehicle on the boat which can take six vehicles.
Like many of Shetland's islands, Papa Stour shows signs of life dating back centuries. Missionary Celtic priests settled here in the 6th century, although the island was first populated around 3000BC.
Suspected leprosy sufferers from the Shetland Mainland were once banished to huts, the foundations of which you can see on Hilla Fielle. To survive, they relied on islanders to leave food for them by the hill dyke.
It was part of Norway until the 1500s.
At its peak, Papa's population was around 380 in the 19th century, when a fishing station was opened at West Voe.
These days just 5 of the island’s 12 houses have permanent residents, the others are holiday rentals. Of the occupied 5, only 2 were at home this morning, and none of the rentals were occupied.
The island is popular with kayakers and divers (there are numerous shipwrecks close to the coastline). From the pier, the island has one road, of just over a mile.
It does however, have an excellent internet service, as it has been the ‘guinea-pig’ test case for remote settlements, with 5G over half the island, and fibre optic high speed broadband to all the properties.
On arrival, I received this message from my phone provider.. “Hi from EE. Welcome to Norway. While you’re here costs include..”
Something, I must admit, I hadn’t realised..
Tumblr media
The ferry cross twice a day on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. I chatted with the crew on the way over, both had plans to build campervans and wanted to ask questions and take photographs of mine. They related some brief stories of rough seas, and we spoke about Norway, with Orkney in the news this morning, with the rumour of it changing its allegiance. The captain told me that Shetland were ahead of Orkney in the Norway queue. Shetland is 170 km from the Scottish mainland and 220 km from the Norwegian mainland. The piers I used, at West Burrafirth and on Papa Stour were both built with EU money. On the outlying Shetland islands from the Mainland, the project of rebuilding crumbling piers was only half way through on the UKs departure, and now is on hold.
Tumblr media
I’m breaking the 23 miles track around the perimeter of the island into 3 days, and today we took on the spectacular north east peninsula, about 7 miles. The weather has settled from the rain of Saturday, but is much cooler now at 11C, cloudy and with showers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are some good names to the various bits of headland. Willie’s Taing. The Creed. Robie’s Noust. Jerome Coutts’s Head.
Tumblr media
I’ve written before about local names of places in the hills around where I used to live in the Lake District, and how a name is initially just used verbally by locals, often a nickname, and then over the course of many years, sneaks onto OS map.
It’s a legacy of a type, in Jerome Coutts’s case for sure.
Times change though, and these days I consider part of my legacy to be the many segments of routes that I give names to on the GPS tracking app, Strava. Mine are recognisable from in influences and interests, to anyone who knows me, Dylan lyrics, Python or Peter Cook quotes, favourite lines from books..
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At Robie’s Noust we paused for a while to watch the grey seals in a calm bit of ocean. There were about six, diving, re-emerging and generally showing off and being curious.
Tumblr media
And, a bit of video from the far northeast corner, and, on quite a calm day..
We were back at the van parked by the pier just as the ferry arrived for its afternoon collection. There were a couple of Austrian women, and a couple of bird-watchers who had come over on foot with me this morning. It had rained on and off during the morning, so they had limited their wanderings. Between ferry times, visitors have five hours, time enough to get to the rugged coasts on the far sides of the island.
A peaceful afternoon ensued, with a modicum of reading, a podcast, and a smidgeon of business.

2. part 1/2. Contextually reference your subject matter. What art, design, cultural, and historic references can you look at to gain insight? Describe them and why they are relevant.
The first reference is Bernd and Hilla Becher who were photographers who took pictures of the disappearing industrial architecture of Western Europe and North America that was fueling the modern era, the pictures that they took are very fascinating because all of the buildings were from the early 20th century and so looking at these images is history. The industrial architecture was very much thrown together with efficiency in mind not caring about the views and opinions of the population. It was all based on time and money. Chemical factories, water towers and cooling towers were some of the subjects that they photographed. Just looking at these images makes me think about how they would be perceived today and how soon they would be torn down. I think it's very interesting the way that design has now changed completely in terms of its market, now people have a massive impact on whether a design stays or goes.
A designer I like a lot is Max Lamb. His research into ways of working is to get your hands on the materials and test them in as many ways as possible, this relates a lot to the smithereens brief which I enjoyed very much. Linking to my chosen subject of effective/efficient, max lamb discovers his outcomes after he has tested the material to its max and found its most effective ways of being used. For a material to be its most efficient requires you to listen to it through testing, many people take materials out of their comfort zone  Sometimes this can work however it might will feel unnatural and temporary. The cardboard chairs he made using Samsung packaging are simply designed so that people with limited skills could similarly replicate the design at home. The environment is a crucial aspect of contemporary designers' work and for a design to become successful it must be suited to today's society/climate.  We are all very conscious of the environment, for example, many people mention "we don't need to be making any more plastic". This idea of using what we have available is something that recently I have been very much interested in. I'm fascinated/ annoyed by waste and what people are calling rubbish, the materials that end up in skips are shocking. A few of my projects have incorporated waste materials as I believe it's important to sometimes use damaged objects/materials in your work.
A project I have looked over many times is the 100 Chairs in 100 days and it's 100 ways by Martino Gamper. Martino's chairs maintain the main form of broken objects/ missing parts and add small/ large additions to create seating, this is a simple/ affordable way of using waste but it can be very difficult to create a new voice when a lot of waste materials already carry context. Martino Gamper incorporated well-known pieces by celebrated designers with items found on the road or in a skip. Through continuous testing, waste materials can become something of value.

Ignoble Blooding - 1
“Cadet Tagan, this is your trial of decision,” the gravely voice of Galaxy Commander Hilla Malthus ground out from the radio, echoing through the cockpit of Tagan’s Hellbringer like an avalanche. The young man gripped the joysticks more firmly, primarily to channel the shaky energy coursing through his blood and keep his hands from shaking. His hands couldn’t shake if they were busy, so he kept them damn well busy squeezing the life out of his controls as the woman continued the trial’s explanation. He knew the rules by heart, as all cadets that made it this far did, but he knew that if he interrupted her, she would drag him into a circle of equals... And the last warrior that she fought there required three days of surgery, cybernetic augmentation, and six weeks of physical therapy to to simply walk again. “Arrayed before you for your Blooding is an Adder, a Nova, and should you prove greater than expected, an Executioner is your final opponent. Defeat one, and you become a Warrior. Two elevates you to Star Commander...” The Galaxy Commander’s voice took on a mocking edge, “and defeat all three to become a full Star Captain of Clan Jade Falcon.”
Tagan closed his eyes and took a deep breath. The squat Adder across the rocky field to the north was almost half the weight of his Hellbringer, but both mechs carried the same longrange punch: a pair of extended range particle projectors each. He’d have to close quickly to bring his greater weapon loadout to bear and end the lighter mech before it scored any significant damage. The Nova would require the opposite: with its blistering 12 medium lasers, Tagan would be defeated swifly at close range. He opened his eyes to scan the terrain for the hulking Executioner. There, he spotted the monsterous 95 ton warmachine half hidden by a rocky rise to the north-east. In truth, he had no plan to engage the final mech. Not only did it outmass his own mech by fully 30 tons, but that additional mass took the form of vicious longrange weapons, including a gauss rifle in its right arm, and an engine powerful enough to match the Hellbringer’s modest mobility. He wouldn’t be able to outgun, outrun, or outmaneuver that beast, and with the damage he’d probably suffer from the other two mechs... The lad shook his head within the confines of his bulky neurohelmet. Three kills just wasn’t in the cards.
“You will engage your opponents one at a time. You may honorably withdraw from the trial after any kill with rank by exiting the circle.” The radio crackled with EM distortion as the three opponent mechs fully powered up. “Do you understand these instructions, cadet, quiaff?”
Tagan glared daggers at the Adder two kilometers away and finally spoke. “Aff, Galaxy Commander.” The cadet thanked his lucky stars that his voice hadn’t shaken or cracked; he’d heard of prior cadets who had lost their composure at this critical moment and the shame followed them for years after their trial.
“Then under Turkina’s gaze, this trial begins.”
Stomping his foot down on the pedal, Tagan set his Hellbringer lurching forward into a pellmell charge towards the center of the field. The opposing Adder raised one arm in salute and stalked forward in a much more deliberate pace, clearly waiting to see what positioning the cadet would take. Seize the initiative, Tagan thought to himself as he scanned over the terrain: a relatively shallow river cut through the circled area from northwest to southeast, and several huge, rocky hills dotted the field. He continued his charge straight forward and kept a sideways watch on the rangefinder. As soon as he hit the outter edge of erPPC range, Tagan slammed the left pedal and nearly toppled his mech over as he veered left towards the first large stone that would provide cover... And narrowly dodged the crackling blue lightning hurled at him from the Adder’s left arm. Screens in his cockpit crackled with the disruption of the near miss, but Tagan was too busy trying to keep the 12 meter tall warmachine balanced as he tore around the boulder at 64 kilometers per hour. Rather than stopping to take cover, as he hoped his opponent would anticipate, he kept the momentum going and burst from the other side at full speed. A jerk of the right joystick pulled his crosshairs to line up on the lighter mech for a moment. He squeezed the trigger, hard, and sent man-made lightning blasting from both barrels of his mech’s arms. The first bolt missed, blasting a thick oak tree into smoldering ruin, but the second ripped into the Adder’s right torso. Slagged armor dropped from the light mech as it stumbled backward and struggled to stay upright. Tagan whooped, but the exultation turned to a yelp of surprise as he lost his mech’s footing on a patch of scree and the Hellbringer slammed down to the ground faster than the cadet could react.
“Shit, shit, shit,” he ground out through teeth that wouldn’t stop chattering. His hands shook almost uncontrollable as he tried to coax the 65 ton mech back to its feet. A quick glance at the armor readout showed that he’d lost a fair chunk of plating from the left arm that had absorbed the worst of the fall, but even as he processed the information, his mech was rocked by a pair of PPC bolts that nearly bowled him over. The armor displayed showed amber now on both center and right torso.
Get up, get up, get UP, he mentally screamed as he forced the machine fully to its feet and slammed the throttle to full to spoil his adversary’s aim. The trial, the young man realized, was not off to a great start...

A strike by some 25,000 nurses and other healthcare personnel begins on Friday morning, and is therefore top of the news agenda for many of Finland's newspapers.
The walkout has been called by the municipal employee unions Tehy and SuPer, and affects six hospital districts: Helsinki and Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, Southwest Finland, North Ostrobothnia, North Savo and Central Finland.
In an editorial piece, Helsingin Sanomat writes (siirryt toiseen palveluun) that the industrial action was unavoidable, as the pay increases offered by employers fell far short of the rises requested by staff representatives.
Healthcare workers have received widespread support for their goals in various opinion polls, HS notes, but "nothing more". And they are not the only ones. Early childhood educators, for example, have equally strenuous yet important jobs — but receive low pay.
Both sectors, healthcare and early childhood education, suffer from chronic labour shortages, HS adds.
In terms of a possible resolution to the current standoff, the newspaper notes that while there never seems to be a 'good' time for the wages of municipal workers to be increased, now is an even worse situation than usual.
"Everyone knows now that the state has no extra money. Therefore, a long and difficult industrial struggle may be about to begin," HS writes.
This view appears to be supported by HUS health care worker Mervi Klapuri-Kari, in an interview (siirryt toiseen palveluun) with tabloid Iltalehti.
"We will be on strike for as long as necessary," she said.
Estonian PM backs Finnish membership of Nato
Staying with Helsingin Sanomat, the paper includes a widely-read interview (siirryt toiseen palveluun) with Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, in which the leader of Finland's Baltic neighbour once again reiterated her support for Finland joining the Nato military alliance.
"If Finland becomes a full member of Nato, Russia will not only have to think about the Finnish Defence Forces, but also the armies of the United States, Britain and, for example, France,” Kallas told HS.
The Estonian PM also makes reference to the Winter War — an analogy that has been frequently used in recent weeks — when Finland repelled a Soviet invasion at the outset of World War II. Despite facing seemingly overwhelming odds, the Finnish forces inflicted huge losses on the invading army and forced them into a humiliating retreat.
Kallas notes that Finland fought Russia, while Estonia's leaders at the time chose not to, as they believed this would save more lives.
"In reality, the atrocities against us began because we didn’t fight. You fought, and many people died in the war. But I believe you saved more lives because you were able to maintain your independence," she told HS.
A pearl of a name
Weekly women's magazine Me Naiset surveyed (siirryt toiseen palveluun) readers in an effort to discover Finland's "most beautiful first name".
The survey was open, so respondents could just offer their own favourite — as opposed to choosing from a predetermined list — and the results were "varied", MN writes.
But the winner was: Helmi, the Finnish word for 'Pearl'.
Although considered to be a more traditional name, many survey respondents said Helmi was also "timeless" and contained "great meaning".
"A simple and elegant girl's name that contains a lot of symbolism," one contributor noted.
The rest of the top 10 included names such as Aino, Lumi, Hilla, Linnea and Aurora — all of which are, yes, generally considered to be girl's names.
"Finns seem to think that the names traditionally given to women are the most beautiful," MN concludes, adding that the highest boy's name on the chart was 'Eino', in 16th place.

Ask The Sea | Peter Iain Campbell
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Night, float us. Offshore wind, shout, Ask the sea What’s lost, what’s left…”
Excerpt from the poem ‘Coda’ by Basil Bunting
In 2013, having spent a number of years chasing the ghosts of industries past, I became intrigued by one of the UK’s last remaining heavy industries, which was also one of its most remote, the Oil and Gas Industry. More specifically, it was the cultural landscape where industry collides with nature that I was drawn to – the incongruous existence of the North Sea offshore oil and gas Installation.
Between 2014 and 2016 I worked and photographed onboard a Drilling Rig in the central North Sea (approximately 130 miles east of Aberdeen), slowly establishing my sea legs, finding my North Sea bearings and documenting the vibrations of life onboard an industrial structure pinned to the seabed 90 metres below. By September 2016 the price of oil had slumped to an 11-year low and oil companies, suppliers and contractors started streamlining their operations. The number of Drilling Rigs operating in the North Sea plunged to 27, the lowest number since records began in 1982. Fields that had been on-stream since as early as 1975 had started to mature or become prohibitively expensive to operate, urging oil companies to consider decommissioning installations.
“Ask The Sea” is an ongoing photographic project exploring the changing nature of the Oil and Gas Industry in the North Sea. Partly inspired by the industrial typologies of Bernd & Hilla Becher it is a project shaped by motion and journey, a documentary of the remaining oil and gas Platforms and Drilling Rigs operating across the entire Scottish sector of the North Sea.
Shot from the perspective of the Platform Supply Vessels (PSV) that service these installations, the project also investigates the human element of this story, capturing the faces of those who work onboard these vessels for many weeks at a time, in often challenging and isolating conditions far away from home.

In 1946, Smith and Belson began attending the inaugural screenings of the Art in Cinema series at the San Francisco Museum of Art (the word Modern” had not yet been added to the name). Originating as a touring program of experimental films circulated by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art in Cinema series expanded under the direction of Frank Stauffacher and Richard Foster to include work by Maya Deren, James and John Whitney, Oskar Fischinger, Mary Ellen Bute, Hans Richter, and Viking Eggeling. Smith and Belson attended Art in Cinema programs religiously for the next four years, and Smith became Stauffacher’s unpaid assistant.3 Smith was especially attracted to the films of Fischinger and in the summer of 1947 traveled to Los Angeles to meet him. He would end up meeting John Cage, Merce Cunningham, and many figures of the Los Angeles avant-garde at Fischinger’s house. A network between the experimental filmmakers of San Francisco and Los Angeles was established. And it was Fischinger who made the important introduction to Smith and Belson’s future patron, the Baroness Hilla Rebay von Ehrenwiesen.
Rebay believed passionately in the cause of nonobjective painting. The three corresponded, and Rebay sent her translations of Kandinsky’s Concerning the Spiritual in Art (1911) and Point and Line to Plane (1926), both recently published by the Guggenheim Foundation and both formative texts for Smith and Belson. Rebay was particularly devoted to the work of Bauer, whom she’d rescued to the United States, literally buying his way out of a Gestapo prison. When Rebay visited the Bay Area in 1948, Belson and Smith picked her up in Belson’s Ford Model T and they drove to Belson’s studio in North Beach and then to Smith’s studio on Buchanan Street in the Fillmore district, where he kept a shabby room above a small jazz club called Jackson’s Nook. (Jimbo’s Bop City, the legendary bebop club where he later lived and painted murals, was two blocks away.) The visit resulted in stipends and small acts of generosity over the next few years—with the explicit understanding that the two men were to promote the agenda of nonobjective art. And although in time both Smith and Belson defected from Rebay’s camp, their fealty to nonobjectivism would never waver; it merely took other forms, including animated film and various protopsychedelic multimedia works leading directly to the light shows of the ’60s.
🌀
It is ironic that in many instances we know more about what took place in ancient Egypt than about what took place seventy-five years ago on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley or Grant Avenue in San Francisco. The radical changes that Harry Smith and Jordan Belson instigated together are still being excavated—works that in many ways remain as radical as the day they were created.

Wilkinson, MVD Director of Acquisitions and producer of the MVD Rewind Collection curator shares his enthusiasm for these new releases. “I’m excited to be working with our great content partners to bring both Drive and The Go-Go Boys to Blu-ray for the first time, and to give collectors a second chance to pick up Action U.S.A., Mortuary and The House on Sorority Row on disc once again. I’m a geek for video store culture and our packaging reflects that. Photographers: Roberto Conte
The collaboration with photographers creates Architcetuul’s catalogue with amazing photo material from all over the world. Find out more about architectural photographers and their work on our Pinterest Boards? This first edition is dedicated to Roberto Conte, who already contributed his Concrete Patterns.
Tumblr media
Together with Stefano Perego they just published Soviet Asia: Soviet Modernist Architecture in Central Asia in which they present material from the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, documenting buildings constructed from the 1950s until the fall of the USSR. In this occasion we talked with Roberto.

What is the role of photography in architecture?
Architects have always been very careful about the way their buildings were photographed. Not everyone has the possibility or the privilege to experience architecture. Sometimes a photo is the only way to have a sensorial relation with the object. Because of the digital render aesthetic, we often don't experience what was actually built.

How do you work; which is your approach?
I start with a research of information and a customer’s brief about the project. I also pay attention on time checking for best natural lights on the site with digital maps and specific software. I tend to explore around location often knocking at the doors of nearby houses to have specific views on the matter. Regarding the images results, I always try to give a good representation of the structure itself from an analytical point of view, showcasing the project features, as well as trying to trigger emotions as surprise or interest.

What are the difficulties? Mostly are related to light management, points of view restraints as well as site condition, when there are objects that impact too much on the site or hide the building. Some buildings are difficult to be photographed in Spring or Summer because they are surrounded by trees or some facades are pointing towards the North. In strong sunny days that makes difficult to get a good picture.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The exhibition that I visited was located at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is called Bernd and Hilla Becher. In this exhibition, there are approximately 450 beautiful black and white photos ranging from the mid-1900s to the early 2000s all photographed by a couple; Bernd Becher and Hilla Becher. Throughout the exhibit, all these photos are divided into 7 sections. Starting with basic forms (00) and ending with typologies (06.) this takes you on a journey through their career, explaining how their photography style was built. Most of the photos they took were in Germany or Belgium. However, I noticed while walking throughout the exhibit that all the photos, despite the differences in where they were taken, had many uncanny similarities that made you wonder if it was intentional or not. Their focus in taking the kind of photos they did, was to capture the disappearing industrial architecture in these European countries. They photographed old water towers and gas tanks, framework houses, and industrial landscapes. A lot of these looked old, and abandoned, which told the story of how they were slowly becoming less and less needed. All these photos vary a bit in dimension. For example, their water tower photos from the Typologies, section, are about 70 x 70 centimeters, while the framework houses photos are about 60x 60 centimeters.  The framework houses especially stood out to me from a technical standpoint: In this section. They experimented with a 360-degree circumnavigation of one structure. When pairing this single enlargement, with its 9 other examples, gave it a more conceptual feel. The exhibition took you through a period of time in the post-war era, allowing you to focus on the western European and north American world from an industrial standpoint.
The two photos that I chose from this exhibition are Duisburg-Bruckhausen, Ruhr Region, taken in Germany, 199, and Gas Tank, Wessling/ Cologne Germany, 1983.
Both photos are gelatin silver prints, which is a style of black-and-white photography. I feel that having these photos in black and white makes much more sense than it would to have them in color. The black and white add more depth to the photo. The first photo in particular captures an industrial landscape from an elevated standpoint. This industrial complex is live and active. There are workers seen in the distance, smoke rising from some of the plants and cars in the parking lot. The elevated vantage point adds to the scale of the photo. It shows the size of the industrial complex itself. It makes all the workers and cars seem so small, and all the plants and buildings so much larger. I feel that this plays an important role in adding to the emphasis of what these photos truly stand for. How the industrial world, architecture, and everything that it has offered to the world is slowly disappearing despite how big and how important they once were. Although this plant is active, it’s still a photo taken place in a post-war time, where very soon its activity will be faded. In the second photo of the gas tank, I feel proportion is an essential part of this photo. The gas tank is the main subject of the photo it takes up nearly the entire surface. Because of this, it is put into perspective the size, and importance of this gas tank. There’s a ladder that wraps around the side, which looks so small in comparison to the gas tank itself due to the proportions of this photo if this photos angle was changed maybe if the gas tank was off to the side, it would not be the main subject of the photo, therefore, the importance that is captured would not be portrayed. In both photos, the lack of color I feel is so important. The whole idea of this exhibition was to show industrial landscapes in a state of disappearance. The black and white adds a sad past-like feel to these photos and really emphasizes the point of capturing these photos.
