Phantom of the Idol
4 volumes (ongoing)
Licensed by Kodansha
Yuuya, one half of the boy pop duo ZINGS, may be the laziest performer in the Japanese music industry. His partner is out there giving 110% every night (and, thankfully, he’s quite popular), but Yuuya’s half-assed, sloppy dancing, and his frankly hostile attitude toward the audience, has the fans hating him and his agent looking for any excuse to cut him loose. The career of a pop idol just isn’t the path of easy leisure and adulation Yuuya expected… After a particularly lifeless concert appearance, Yuuya meets a girl backstage. She's dressed to the nines in a colorful outfit, she’s full of vim and vigor, and all she wants from life is to perform. There’s just one problem: She’s been dead for a year. This is the ghost of Asahi Mogami, the beloved singer whose time on the stage was tragically cut short, unless… If ghosts are real, is spirit possession really that much of a stretch?

WHAT I READ IN OCTOBER/NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2022:
A three-for-one, because the holidays made me so busy I didn't get much reading done at all. There's a lot of manga on here, and two different tie-in novels, which I think means I'm doing really great and more people will want to talk to me then ever before. (That's a self-deprecating joke, but also maybe Warhammer guys are friendly....It's unlikely, but you never know!)
Anyway, don't have synopses for all of these, but hopefully you can glean from the titles and my description alone if you'd be interested.
MANGA/COMICS:
Afterschool Charisma by Kumiko Suekane
The only reason I got this manga was because it literally has the exact same premise as Clone High, and I thought that was like, really funny. And it was. Definitely going for more weird estoricism and like, internally evalution of what it means to be a clone that Clone High, but fun, nontheless. Warning for insane bluntness when it comes to historical characters chosen, though.
Chainsaw Man Vol. 1-3 by Tatsuki Fujimoto
The roommate and I started watching Chainsaw Man, and loved it, and then I started getting the manga. I didn't read it as voraciously as my brother (@sillymanders) did, but I still really enjoy it. However, honestly I think if someone's gonna like this one, they're already reading it.
Transformers: Shattered Glass by Danny Lore
I love Shattered Glass as a concept, the same way I love the Mirror Universe in Star Trek. Something about a universe where morality is flip-flopped really tickles my brain. This, as what I believe is the first not "Botcon Exclusive" Shattered Glass thing was pretty good. Megatron and Starscream were the best, and Soundwave was really great, in his appearance.
Phantom of the Idol Vol. 3 by Hijiki Isoflavone
Phantom of the Idol is the best lowkey comedy I've read since Azumanga Daioh. Will everyone agree with that? No. But I love it. I've enjoyed every expansion to the cast, and the really well-mixed drama and comedy.
Yagi the Bookshop Goat by Fumi Furukawa
This was a BL featuring boys with animal ears. It was honestly pretty boring, and if I haven't sold it to HPB yet, I'm going to!
Tokyo Alien Vol. 1 by NAOE
Mmmm yummy yum I love my delicious trash. This is a shounen? Manga about a dude who joins an organization fighting aliens with his hot (male) classmate. It's not great, but I love it.
Can't Stop Cursing You Vol. 2 and 3
I've talked about this one. A pretty fun detective manga, with some decent jokes. I like it quite a bit.
NOVELS/LIGHT NOVELS:
The Case Files of Jeweler Richard Vol. 1 by Nanako Tsujimura and Utako Yukihiro
This is a pretty fun light novel about a jeweler and his hapless assistant. I enjoy it, quite a bit.
S: A Love Bite by Soki Aido
Oh, weird yaoi novels from Half Price Books, I just can't quit you. The level of drama in these is pretty fun.
Warhammer: The Daemon's Curse by Dan Abnett and Mike Lee
This book was hilarious. Every Warhammer Dark Elf is like, cartoonishly evil, in a really fun way. These books make an interesting contrast with the Drizzt novels.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Way of the Warrior by Diane Carey
Normally I don't read the ones of these that are episode-related, but I really liked this one. Garak gets a really interesting PoV in here, and his opinions on Worf are FASCINATING.
Anyway, there's my wrap-up! I really enjoyed doing these posts all of last year, so I'm definitely gonna continue them. My goal is to get better about summarizing the books, I think.

The Curse of the Phantom Pirate by I.J. Parhom is a weird little Western version of the Phantom story, featuring Fergal, a guy who has just bought and is trying to reopen an abandoned theater, only to be harassed by the resident theater ghost, who is also a pirate. Also there’s a cowboy extorting a salary? It sounds wild.
The Phantom Idol by Hijiki Isoflavone is a new manga series, and I’m honestly not 100% on its Phantom-relatedness, but I’m game to find out! Yuuya is a famous pop star but doesn’t like his career or feel that he’s very talented, an issue that becomes abruptly moot when the ghost of a dead singer decides to possess him and make him perform well anyway.
Phantom Masquerade by A.L. Hawke is a modern-day sequel to the Phantom story, which we haven’t seen the likes of in... well, a hot minute, at least in books! Mina (probably meant to evoke the character from Stoker’s Dracula) is a descendent of the original Christine and trying to make it in opera in Paris, and finally gets her big break in Harlequin, a show based on Don Giovanni, but is stressed out by the conflict between her frightening performances, her best friend and their rapidly becoming romantic relationship, and a ghost that keeps intruding into her efforts.
Phantoms is a Halloween short story compendion that features the story “Death at the Masquerade” by Alaine Greyson, which a peek suggests is likely Phantom-related. Even if it isn’t, it’s the time of year to enjoy a little spookiness!
Requiem by Emily Shore is the last book in her Phantom series, which started with Roseblood and Silhouette. It’s got vampires, it’s got amnesia, it’s got accidentally waking up in Germany. It’s got it all.
We also have two reissues!
Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge is one of the all-time terrible movie greats of the Phantom world, and if you were just dying to own it on Blu-Ray, now you can! I may have to buy it myself, since it has three different cuts of the movie on it and I have no idea which one I’ve seen or if other ones might make more (any) sense. Add a making-of documentary and a lot of behind-the-scenes material, and this is definitely worth it for a collector!
The Phantom of the Opera by J.R. Simons is an old 1990s play adaptation of the story, which is now available digitally! If you aren’t me and you don’t want to spend your life surrounded by boxes full of playscripts, this is exciting news.
That’s it for this month, so October - look alive, we’re going to be expecting fireworks for the Halloween Phantom season!

The end of June is nigh, and here we are again with another monthly round-up of my favourite books of the month.
This month I've been doing my best to get through the bingo board on Whatever-You-Want-athon and I completed it twice! I was able to finish the lines and get that full house and I really appreciated trying to figure out books that had for example, 'P,S & G' on them!
This month I read 33 books, I got to re-read a childhood favourite which never happens for me, I finished the Poirot series this month and I continued reading Terry Pratchett's Discworld too, where I am now at book 34, so the next book I will be reading is 'Thud!' which has one of my favourite characters Sam Vimes in, so I have high hopes!
Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett - I feel like it's one of those series Discworld, which is rare where the books as you get deeper they get better, or maybe you just care now enough to be completely hooked into this world. The story of Polly as she joins the monstrous regiment to look for her brother, this book is brilliantly written with fantastic characters and funny moments that will keep you wanting more.
Going Postal by Terry Pratchett - This is a book I just recently finished and it is so good. So good. The whole post office staff is brilliant, I love them all so much and would want to be a fly on the wall in this place as Moist Von Lipzwig changes career from con-artist to postmaster general in this fantastic story of found family and realising sometimes what you want changes.
The Puffin Portal by Vashti Hardy - I am an absolute sucker for found family. I think these books are so cute and have a really great family dynamic and this one is really a great story or robotic birds and cheeky thiefery that leads our lead on a search to find the culprit and a new member of the family. I think these books for kids are so charming.
Phantom Of An Idol Volume One by Hijiki Isoflavone - You will see a review of this very soon, but this manga about a boy and a ghost who takes over his body so he performs better is funny as heck and a really great read, with fun perspectives and an art style that I do absolutely love. This was an arc and it will be published for the first time in English either next month, or it was sometime in June.
Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire - Even the most disappointing book by thia author would be great to me, and this book is not for a second that. Brilliantly written every single time, I adore this series and I own Middlegame now and hope to take it on holiday with me and I just hope it continues my love of this fantastic writer, definitely now one of my all time favourites.
What have you been reading in June? I'd love to know your thoughts on my books or just to hear about your own!
Thank you for following and/or reading!

Phantom of the Idol TV Anime Gets "Unmotivated" New Key Visual
Tumblr media
Letting your unmotivated lead singer remodel the website has disastrous results, because a new key visual, a new audio drama, and a limited time official website redesign have all been revealed for Phantom of the Idol (known in Japan as Kami-kuzu Idol), an upcoming TV anime based on the supernatural comedy manga by Hijiki Isoflavone about a listless male singer who becomes more motivated when he is possessed by the ghost of a deceased female idol singer.
In the voice drama (below), Hitomi Shinano (CV: Eri Kitamura) chides her subordinate Yuya Niyodo (CV: Fumiya Imai) for lacking motivation and orders him to work on his social media skills and redo the band's website. The new key visual (below) is drawn in-character by voice actor Fumiya Imai as Yuya Niyodo and along with the redesigned website represents the results of Yuya's efforts.

Superfoods – What Are They, And Why Should You Eat Them?
Who wouldn’t want their foods to be super? The term “superfoods” is fairly new and refers to foods that offer the maximum benefits possible, with minimal effort. They are generally packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. They often are very low in calories too. Most superfoods are plant based, although there is actually no standard criteria or legal definition that would classify any food as being a superfood.
There is actually no real difference between a superfood, and just eating healthy items that are rich in nutritional compounds and beneficial to your health. Despite this being said, we have put a list of some of the healthiest “superfoods” together, with a list of the benefits you could gain by eating them.
  Oats
An extremely filling breakfast choice, oats are a complex carbohydrate that takes your body longer to digest. This is actually good for your body as they need to break down the complicated mesh of molecules. The health benefits of eating oats are weight loss, lower blood sugar levels and a reduced risk of heart disease. If you are bored of the everyday bowl of oatmeal, why not spice it up and add some fresh fruit or Cinnamon for taste alternatives.
  Spinach
This dark and leafy vegetable is full of nutrients such as iron, potassium and fibre. Known to help maintain good vision, support energy levels, heart health and bones, spinach can be enjoyed in a variety of different ways. Besides the usual cooking methods, you could also use them as a bed for a salad, or sauté them in some butter and garlic as a tasty side dish. Other green leafy superfoods include kale, Swiss chard, beet greens and collard greens.
  Salmon
Rich with omega-3 fatty acids, salmon and other fatty fish (such as trout or herring can actually reduce cholesterol, decrease the risk of heart disease, and they are a great source of protein too. Selenium is a mineral found in soil and certain foods, like salmon. It is a trace element which means you only require small amounts, but may support bone health, improve thyroid function, and protect against cancer.
  Eggs
Eggs are a rich source of selenium, vitamin D, B6, B12 and other minerals such as zinc, iron and copper. That’s a lot of goodness in one small food item! Eggs are also really high in cholesterol but eating eggs does not affect the cholesterol in the blood. They have also been known to reduce the risk of heart disease.
  Blueberries
These beautiful dark blue berries are almost as gorgeous as they taste and pack a powerful punch in terms of health benefits. Containing the highest antioxidants count of all foods, they also deliver 4g of fibre per cup, which helps you in feeling fuller for longer. Extremely low in calories, they reduce DNA damage, which may help protect against aging and cancer.
  Seaweed and Spirulina
Seaweed is in fact packed with micronutrients like iodine, iron, calcium and magnesium. There are many different varieties of seaweed which include dulse, nori, kombu, hijiki and wakame, and all are worth your time. It can help with blood sugar control, relieve the symptoms of arthritis and contain probiotics that can assist with gut health. Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that grows in both fresh- and saltwater. Also loaded with nutrients and antioxidants, it is known for benefiting your body as well as your brain. It fights free radicals and inhibits production of inflammatory signalling molecules thus providing antioxidants and anti-inflammatory effects.
  Soy
Soyabeans have shown to possibly prevent age-related memory loss thanks to the high concentrates of isoflavones, which is a type of phytochemical that occurs naturally in plants. They help to reduce the amount of bad cholesterol in the blood and have also been known to reduce bone loss and increase bone density during menopause.
  Greek Yogurt
Instead of choosing a low-fat or no-fat yogurt, rather try finding a 2% or whole milk Greek yogurt to get your fill of carbs, proteins and fats. It helps in keeping you feeling fuller for longer, and can be used in place of mayonnaise in a chicken or potato salad. Packed with probiotics, it can help boost your immune system and decrease stomach issues, such as diarrhea and pain.
  Chia and Flax Seeds
These tiny seeds are like dynamite in a small package. Just one tablespoon of chia seeds contains roughly 4.5g of heart-healthy fats and 5.5g of fiber. And just like their cousins, flax seeds are also extremely high in fiber and good-for-you fats. The nice thing about these little seeds is that they can easily be added to smoothies, into salads and you can even incorporate them into your baking.
  Dark Chocolate
We saved the best for last. Imagine a dessert that is a superfood. Chocolate is made from cocoa. Cocoa contains antioxidants called flavonoids, and the higher the percentage or cocoa, the darker the chocolate and the more flavonoids you’ll get. Dark chocolate has been said to improve blood flow and lower blood pressure. It may also reduce heart disease risk and the flavonols can protect against sun damage, by improving the flow of blood to the skin thus increasing the skin density and hydration. It could also improve brain function. Are these reasons not enough to reach for another block of dark chocolate?
 To sum up
At the end of the day, it is important to eat everything in moderation. It is also imperative that you eat a healthy balanced diet. By adding some of the above superfoods to your diet, you’ll be assisting your body in getting all the healthy nutrients, vitamins and minerals it needs to keep you healthy.
There are many other “superfoods” that have not been listed here, but are also very beneficial to you and your body.

WHAT I READ IN JAN/FEB/MAR 2023:
This wasn't originally meant to include March but I procrastinated so long that it can! Anyway, here we go!
LIGHT NOVELS/NOVELS:
The Case Files of Jeweler Richard by Vol. 2
I like these light novels, but I don't have a ton to say. Would recommend if you're REAL into jewelry, or you like descriptions of pretty boys.
Star Trek: The Next Generation - Sins of Commission by Susan Wright
This ended up being a really enjoyable book! I read it mostly because I wanted info about one random minor character, (Jono Endar - star of a single TNG episode) and I heard he was mentioned in this one. He was, there was a touch of lore for him, loved all of that, but I ended up really loving the plot of this book, as well. It's a very tense story about the Enterprise going to assist a planet with an environmental crisis, which all gets worse when aliens who have an uncomfortable control over emotions come to stay on the Enterprise. It's a great book, with really good characterization of Riker and Beverly. Also at one point Geordi is pissed at Data and Data calls this experience "exhilarating". Hoo-boy.
Star Trek: The Next Generation - The Q Continuum by Greg Cox
I enjoyed this one as well. Set post-finale, this is a trio of novels (I read it all in an omnibus) about a foe from Q's past returning to plague the universe once again. The Picard/Q relationship here really shines, but I think Beverly gets a lot of great character moments too.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - A Stitch in Time by Andrew Robinson
Not to hardcore flex on anyone, but I've got a physical copy of this one. Thank you to my brother who got it for me.
Anyway, Andrew Robinson's famed chronicle of Garak's life, told in his own words. I think I'm gonna need more time to digest this one properly, but I really enjoyed it. (Also, Garak's slams on Dukat were funny. I clapped when the Cardassian with the super long neck was introduced.)
MANGA/COMICS:
Killing Me by Akiyama, Vol. 1
A fun vampire yuri comedy. A vampire hunter finds herself entangled with a vampire that goes to school with her, unable to kill her, no matter how hard she tries. Short 'n sweet. I don't think I'm going to pick up volume 2, but volume 1 ends on a nice note, so that's fine.
Phantom of the Idol by Hijiki Isoflavone, Vol. 4
Another volume of my favorite current comedy manga! POTI consistently manages to bring in great new elements and evolve relationships in interesting ways. Huge recommend.
On or Off by A1
This is a Korean webtoon, adapted to print form. A manager of a company that's creating an app for a much larger company ends up sexually and then romantically involved with the Large Company's CEO. A cute story, good art, and notable for BL, features lots of women, which always makes me super happy.
Ordinary Crush by Hyouta Fujiyama, Vol. 1
A BL anthology. It kinda sucks, as a lot of the old JUNE manga kinda does. I don't know why I keep buying these.
Oshi no Ko by Aka Akasaka
The story of a gynecologist who ends up doctoring to his favorite idol during her pregnancy. This story, however, goes so off the fucking rails I can't even describe it. Don't look this one up, just read it. It's insane.
Requiem of the Rose King by Aya Kanno
A weird manga, a historical fiction about the Real War of the Roses that Really Took Place. I enjoyed this manga, the art was beautiful, but perhaps the most interesting element was learning that the author was the creator of one of my roommate's favorite shoujo manga, Otomen. Cool!
Sotus by Bittersweet
A BL about a Thai university which features hazing as a major part of it's culture. This was a little uninspired, so we'll see if I read more.
Tokyo Alien by NAOE, Vol. 2
Pretty generic shonen sci-fi action, but I'm gonna keep reading! It's got enough there to keep me hooked.
Witch Hat Atelier by Kamone Shirahama, Vol. 4
Another volume of Witch Hat Atelier! This story is always fantastic, and I really enjoyed the character development in this one.
NOVELS/LIGHT NOVELS:
The Case Files of Jeweler Richard by Vol. 2
I like these light novels, but I don't have a ton to say. Would recommend if you're REAL into jewelry, or you like descriptions of pretty boys.
Star Trek: The Next Generation - Sins of Commission by Susan Wright
This ended up being a really enjoyable book! I read it mostly because I wanted info about one random minor character, (Jono Endar - star of a single TNG episode) and I heard he was mentioned in this one. Anyway, Andrew Robinson's famed chronicle of Garak's life, told in his own words. I think I'm gonna need more time to digest this one properly, but I really enjoyed it, if only for Garak's slams on Dukat.
--
Anyway, that's the wrap-up for these three months! Feels really good to get that all accomplished! I still wonder if I should change up the review format somewhat, or maybe just start doing actual "what I read this month" vids on YouTube or something, but for now this is good.
