Shin Ultraman
Movies watched in 2023
Shin Ultraman (2022, Japan)
Director: Shinji Higuchi
Writer: Hideaki Anno
Mini-review:
Let me start by saying that this is nowhere near as good as Shin Godzilla, a movie that I loved. This one is fun and everything, but the pace feels really rushed and it seems like none of the characters were fleshed out properly. Also, I didn't like the structure at all, cause it feels like you are watching four episodes of a TV show instead of one single narrative.
That being said, there are several things that really impressed me. For starters, the film constantly plays around with different types of cameras and angles, which makes it very interesting and enjoyable in terms of visuals. The action scenes are a bit silly, but isn't that the essence of a tokusatsu movie? So yeah, they are pretty fun. The acting is also really good, even if the characters and the writing were kinda underdeveloped. Anyway, I kinda expected more from this creative team, but it's not too bad.

Exposition Art Blog Hidetoshi Nagasawa - Japanese Contemporary Sculpture
Hidetoshi Nagasawa (30 October 1940 – 24 March 2018) was a Japanese sculptor and architect, who lived and worked in Italy from 1967 until his death in 2018 "Strongly evocative as well as being of highly symbolic and lyrical value, the works of Hidetoshi Nagasawa (Tonei, 1940) are always intensely permeated with Far Eastern philosophy, thereby leading to research that syncretically combines the spiritual heritage of the East and of the West, filtered through crossreferences and ideas stemming from an experiential and human dimension that he has never disregarded. The artist and his family moved from Manchuria to Japan, and already in the 1950s he became familiar with the various trends in avant-garde art through his contact with the Gutaj group as well as by regularly visiting the independent exhibitions organized by the magazine “Yamiuri.”

Remember how the Japanese tabloid Taishu reported that Hideaki Anno was going to be working on an Ultraman project back in March? August Ragone called “Ultraman B/S” on them then and Tsuburaya Productions offered a no-comment, but Taishu printed a more specific update today. Filming is supposed to start in October or November, with Hidetoshi Nishijima, Masami Nagasawa (one of the Shobijin in Tokyo S.O.S. and Final Wars), and Takumi Saito (Shin Godzilla) as the stars. So it looks like we’ll soon find out how legitimate this is one way or another.
