Everything was controlled, here. 

Of course, that wasn’t as immediately obvious as other things about the place, namely the fact that practically everyone here had superpowers. But it still permeated every aspect of living at Westwater. Everything was carefully controlled, to direct towards exactly the results the organization wanted.

The first couple of times, such things could have been coincidence. But after a full week, there was no way it was anything but deliberate. When you did what they wanted, the food they served you tasted better, the showers were nice, and you were assigned fewer and better chores. When you didn’t, the food was inevitably something you didn’t like, showers were shorter and colder, and you got the chores no one wanted.

If you outright fought against them, the punishments were a lot more overt…and intense. Nolan had been playing by the rules so far and thus hadn’t brought down that kind of consequence on himself, but he’d seen others who were more defiant.

Schedules were strict, put together with little to no input from the trainees, and failure to follow them was a punishable offense.

They also had responsibilities outside of their classes. Nolan was sure that Westwater made enough money to employ people to do these jobs, the chores were just another method of control. They ensured that the trainees remained occupied, sifted out those who were obedient and those who were rebellious, clearly demonstrated who was in charge, and provided another opportunity for trainees to be supervised and watched. The chores could take the form of a punishment or a reward, landing them with tasks that were dreaded and hated, or granting a reprieve from such things, sometimes even giving them duties that were interesting and almost fun.

Even the physical aspects of the training center were designed to maintain control. The fences were higher security than Nolan had noticed when he first arrived. They were tasteful-looking enough they could pass as more decorative than practical from the outside, but when you were confined inside them it became clear they were a cage. There were cameras scattered throughout the property. Even the layout of the buildings seemed to subtly whisper about where the power lay, though Nolan couldn’t pinpoint why.

Seen through the lens of psychological conditioning, a lot of Westwater’s seemingly bizarre traits made sense. Student cards were used for just about everything because that’s how they tailored individuals’ treatment based on their behavior. Trainees socialized based on their years rather than any other demographic because how long they’d been here was one of the most significant determinors of how they thought and acted. Seemingly erratic patterns of treatment became predictable and logical when you knew what they were responding to.

It was clear where the power sat. Nolan knew who was in control here—the instructors and administrators—and who wasn’t—himself and the other trainees. There was really only one choice that remained for him to make: whether to give in to it, or to resist it.

Part of him whispered that he’d already made the decision to cooperate when he signed himself away.

magi rambling

idk it jus hit me out of nowhere how much i love magi fic and how sinja is portrayed in such. imo THEEEE best magi fic of all time is works cowritten by galiko and daphnerunning, those two were genuinely on galaxy brain mega dimension level thinking full time, but like less abt magi meta as a whole and more on how the characters are so true to themselves and their flaws

it's been so long that in not gonna be able to remember who all did it but i def remember all of galiko's sinja fic that also portrayed sinbad/judal to some extent, that it was made very clear in the text how differently and on different footing both relationships stood. judal especially in their hands was written so well in a way that changed how i viewed the character in canon to some extent and in every other piece of fictional media. like how can you write someone so pathetic and deceptive and a bastard and it's all perfectly in character

I've never been into sin/ju and i don't think i ever read anything w them in fic seriously or w/o skimming but i did sit thru enough to know how the galiko/daphne pair brought them forth and made it very wanton-ly obvious that sin is always just manipulating judal and leading him on to get what he wants at the end of it all, but in contrast, it's clear that he so deeply loves ja'far in ways mere words cannot express

to see the relationship dynamics compared and contrasted in fic was always such a treat because sin treats almost everyone like they're a stepping stone used to further his own objectives, but then he treats his advisor like a genuine person. shows real care and concern, becomes inconsolable when ja'far is hurt, refuses to quell his rage for any reason when someone has wronged ja'far. his advisor truly is his precious person that he can strip down out of his title as king and just be sinbad around.

and this is even further glorified when ja'f knows but insists he doesn't!!! playa it off bc sin is king and this is uncouth!!! only to have such moments of weakness when anything goes terribly wrong and he's suddenly on the brink of death, terrified of leaving sin behind all alone, letting himself have just as long as it takes to recover the bare minimum amount to bask in sin's unending devotion. they truly do treat each other differently in canon and otherwise and it's so gratifying to see and realize each time as someone who loves sinja so dearly

Anyways here's my completely sane theories abt upcoming chapters (115 and 116 if asagiri doesn't switch pov's) :D

So just as a quick summary of the chapter leaks: after a scene showing medieval!Fyodor getting impaled by a lance from one of Bram's guards, Dazai realises some things about Fyodor's plan and comes to a horrible realisation.... (i won't reveal too much abt it but if the leaks r true then holy shit this has been long in the making)

But he realises Feyda may not be dead...

So he's physically attempting to pull Fyodor's body from the helicopter wreckage, when Chuuya comments that he's definitely 'dead as a doornail' (gotta love chuuya) Dazai says "are you sure about that" before turning the body round.. "then who the hell is this"

Under the pages with that last scene, it said 'to be continued...' so this is likely where the chapter will end. But I truly think Fyodor's not dead, and late last night, I noticed something that i haven't seen anyone mention yet...

So yk when the prison break arc first began and Nikolai used his ability to get Dazai and Fyodor out of their cells? Well, we only see Dazai land, we don't see where Feyda lands.... he was just already there!

Nikolai could have used his ability to move the real Feyda to another part of the prison, and while Dazai and Sigma was fighting Fyodor and Chuuya, escaped with the real Fyodor!

ALSO ! we haven't seen Nikolai at all since he started 'mourning' his freind in front of the wreckage, he's not there anymore and nowhere to be seen.

He could have gone to see the real Feyda in a safe place where no one would find them quickly...

I probably also have a plausible theory abt Fyodor's real ability trigger but let's see what the rest of today's chapter reveals before I start writing it out

The fanartist I found earlier draws alot of cute fanart of human Chidaruma and Damemaru hanging out seemingly as brothers and I was assuming it was because of how Hole and Nagurun look the exact same but it did make me realize like. This whole time Ive been thinking of Damemaru as a Aikawa remix but he could totally be a Chidaruma reference. Hes just fucking AU Chidaruma.
