I’m really struck by this passage about the narrator’s PTSD in War of the Worlds. The book was published in 1898, before ‘shell-shock’ became a term in 1914 and PTSD established as a diagnosis in the 1970’s.

I think an interesting Hunger Games book would be one about being in the Career system in districts one or two. Because imagine being pressured by your parents or your peers or what have you when you’re a little kid to attend an academy designed to train you to murder other kids in the Hunger Games, with the expectation that you’ll one day volunteer to do just that. It’s spending your entire childhood in a brainwashing pressure cooker to turn you into a killing machine like���.

Making up a name for the War of the Worlds narrator bc getting attached to him without having anything to call him is driving me BONKERS

Anyway am going with Terrance Clay:

Terrance = spinning off of how a lot of sci-fi calls earthlings “terrans,” reflecting him being humanity’s point of view of the Martian invaders

Clay = Yes I stole this from Ace Attorney and Critical Role simultaneously. But a big part of Narrator’s arc is realizing that humanity isn’t some pinnacle of evolution with nothing to fear, we’re all but dust and terribly mortal, etc etc. Also really love the sparknotes’ analysis that Narrator’s humility and lack of bravado is what enabled him to survive.
