World Chocolate Day
Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate…chocolate milk, truffles, Snickers, chocoate cake…indulge in any of the many kinds of chocolate out ther.
There are a number of dates throughout the year promoting variations of local, national or international World Chocolate Day – our research leads us to believe that this is the true, definitive, purist ‘World Chocolate Day‘, so celebrate with some of the high cocoa, rich, dark chocolate that makes you go tingly inside.
World Chocolate Day is nothing short of a special tribute to mankind’s greatest culinary invention. (Sorry Bread or even Pizza!) Chocolate can enhance and hlp to create the most luxurious desserts and can even be enjoyed and indulged on its own. Some of the most popular chocolate bars are plain and simple. If this is the one for you, try going for a high cocoa percentage with low added sugar.
The History Of World Chocolate Day
The history of chocolate goes back around 2,500 years. The Aztecs loved their newly discovered liquid chocolate to the extent that they believed the god of wisdom, Quetzalcoatl, literally bestowed it upon them. Cocoa seeds even acted as a form of currency. Could you imagine going shopping or buying a house will a huge pile of Cocoa seeds? It would be wonderful, no? These days, the chocolate was bitter, as it was long before sugar was added. Once chocolate took a turn and went sweet in a 16th Century Europe, chocolate caught on to the masses and became one of many households favorite treats.
Many present-day chocolate companies began operations in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Cadbury began in England by 1868. And then 25 years later Milton S. Hershey, purchased chocolate processing equipment at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, he is now one of the biggest and world-known chocolate creators in the world. He began the company by producing chocolate-coated caramels. Nestlé began back in the 1860s and has grown into one of the largest food conglomerates in the world. You’re bound to of heard of one of these if not all of them. Perhaps you even enjoy a bar or two or their fine chocolate creations at home.
World Chocolate Day Timeline
Beginning of Human History
Cacao Trees (the cocoa bean plant) may have been growing in the wild for 10,000 years or more
1500 BC – 300 BC
Cacao Plants Are Grown by Olmec Indians
Olmec Indians begin growing cacao domestically in the area that is now somewhere in the vicinity of southern Mexico. The beans were probably made into an unsweetened beverage consumed by elite, wealthy people.
300 BC – 500 AD
Cacao Adopted into the Mayan Culture
Mayan culture is developed in Central America and the cacao tree becomes part of that culture. The origin of the English word “chocolate” probably began here. The word for “tree” in the Mayan language was cacahuaquchtl, and the word xocoatl, which literally means “bitter water”, was likely based on the drink made from the cacao bean.
600-1000 AD Cacao Heads to South America
Mayans migrate south and take the cacao plants with them, beginning cultivated plantations. For many people during this time, the cocoa pod was considered to be a religious symbol, sometimes referred to as ‘the food of the gods’.
1200s AD Aztecs Drink Chocolate
The Azetcs learn about cacao plants from trade negotiations with the Mayans. They continue the tradition of making a chocolate drink, sometimes mixed with herbs and spices, such as chilli.
1500s AD Cocoa Beans Head to Europe
Cocoa seeds are so precious in South American they are used as currency. Around the same time, Spanish adventurers bring chocolate back to Spain. Finding it rather bitter, they begin adding cane sugar to it, as well as vanilla and other light spices.
1657 First Chocolate House Opens
As chocolate spreads throughout Europe, a chocolate house opens in England where chocolate drinks can be purchased.
1765 First American Chocolate Company
The first chocolate company in America opens, Baker’s Chocolate.
1830 Solid Chocolate Appears
Chocolate in a solid form meant for eating is developed by British chocolate maker, J.S. Fry & Sons.
1868 First Mass Produced Chocolate
After providing chocolate for Queen Victoria, Cadbury first sells boxes of mass produced chocolate candies in England.
1875 Milk Chocolate Arrives
The Nestlé Company begins in Switzerland with the newest version of the treat, milk chocolate. Nestlé eventually becomes the largest producer of chocolate in the world.
1895 Chocolate Becomes Affordable
Milton Hershey begins selling the Hershey Bar, making chocolate affordable for the average person.
1912 Chocolate Bon-Bons are Introduced
The chocolate filled bon-bon is introduced in Switzerland by Jules Sechaud.
1986 Single-Origin Chocolate Appears
The single-origin chocolate bar is introduced by Valhrona, taking designer chocolate to a whole new level.
2000s Designer Chocolate Develops
Chocolate becomes part of the trend toward fusion cuisine, pairing up with exotic spices such as curry, saffron, lemongrass, coffee beans and much more. Many people seek chocolate with a high percentage of cacao for its antioxidant health benefits.
How Is Chocolate Made?
Many people are unaware that chocolate is a fermented food. You heard that right, once the cacao pods are picked, and then cleaned of pithy white material from the fruit, they are dried and then the cacao beans are fermented. The cacao nibs are revealed once the papery shell is removed. This is where the fun and creativity come in.
Chocolatiers then grind the nibs into cocoa mass, separating them into cocoa solids and cocoa butter, they then combine them with milk and sugar. If they’re creating white chocolate then it’s just the chocolate butter with milk and sugar. It’s definitely worth celebrating this process, especially considering how much thought goes into getting it just right. Every Chocolatier has different methods and ideas that are all popular across the world.
As time has gone on, we have moved towards the indulgence of dark chocolate. It contains far less sugar and holds a higher percentage of cocoa. If you’re looking for the best dark chocolate it’s worth checking out the ones you find from the Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Ecuador. They have ideal climates for cocoa trees and they are known for producing some of the best chocolate. It certainly sounds good! When you purchase chocolate from these regions it’s always best to make sure it’s “fair trade chocolate,” this means you are helping to help make cocoa farming more sustainable. It’s certainly something to keep in mind!
How to celebrate World Chocolate Day
Although some would love to celebrate this day every day, the chocolate day gives you the perfect opportunity to eat your favorites in ample portions. Do you really need any more of an excuse to over indulge? It’s definite harmless once in a while.
The chocolate flavor is most definitely a favorite right throughout the world. It flavors cakes, breakfast cereal, toppings, desserts, candies, ice creams, and much more. Considering its popularity, it certainly deserves a day of honor.
We don’t need to tell you what to do to celebrate this day, do we? Eat Chocolate! Some ways you can incorporate chocolate into this chocolate day include:

You don’t need to be told to indulge in this treat, as and when you want, however, the chocolate day most definitely gives us a special day to indulge in the rich, creamy glory that is chocolate. You will find many bakeries, individuals, and candy stores joining in on the celebrations and you can expect to find some delicious recipes, from meringue pies, milk chocolate pudding through to giant decorative cakes in shop windows you are sure to find something to tickle your fancy.

Robert Middleton (born Samuel G. Messer, May 13, 1911 – June 14, 1977) Film and television actor known for his large size, beetle-like brows, and a deep, booming voice (for which he was known as "Big Bob Middleton"), usually in the portrayal of ruthless villains.
Middleton appeared in many television programs in the 1950s and 1960s, including the CBS anthology series Appointment with Adventure. In 1956, he guest starred on James Arness’s TV Western series Gunsmoke, playing the title character in the episode “Dutch George” (S1E32), a flamboyant career horse thief who was friends with Matt Dillon in their wilder younger days (this episode unveiled some of Dillon’s shadier past, once being a young man who also might have stolen, who at a yet to be revealed crossroad in life, opted to be a lawman). In 1961, he was cast as Arthur Sutro in the episode "The Road to Jericho" of the ABC western series, The Rebel, starring Nick Adams, and guest-starred in the episode "A Man of Means" of the short-lived crime adventure-drama series The Investigators, starring James Franciscus and James Philbrook

Among his several appearances in the long-running Alfred Hitchcock Presents, he portrayed a gangster in high places, Mr. Koster, in the 1956 episode "The Better Bargain". In 1958, he played the villain in the first episode of NBC's Bat Masterson western series, starring Gene Barry in the title role. That same year, he portrayed the highly sympathetic but fiercely dedicated state executioner in an episode of Thriller (U.S. TV series) entitled "Guillotine". He also appeared in three episodes of Bonanza from 1960 to 1967. Middleton appeared as defendant "Judge Daniel Redmond" in the 1963 Perry Mason episode, "The Case of the Witless Witness". Middleton guest-starred on Get Smart as the KAOS villain "The Whip", intent on hypnotizing Agent 86 in the 1970 series finale "I Am Curiously Yellow".

Jennifer Kelly 2020: I’m done expecting next year to be better
Not to belabor the point, which has been covered everywhere, but 2020 sucked. My last live concert was on March 7th. It was 75 Dollar Bill in a beautiful reconfigured industrial space on the Amherst College campus, and I already had questions about whether I should be there or not. The show was worth it, absolutely riveting, and no one I know got sick from it, but a couple of weeks later, Amherst College shut down and then, basically, the world.
When I think about 2020, I think about bands that don’t fully make sense unless you see them live, and how, this year, no one got to see them live. I think about musicians who were barely making it before, now cut off from concert revenues and, in a lot of cases, day jobs at restaurants, coffee shops and bars. I think about six-digit medical bills from multi-week COVID-19 treatments, and how my insurance will only cut that to low five figures. I think about the constant spew of bile and nonsense, the willful destruction of American institutions and the persistent sense that we will never recover from any of this, and I look for refuge.
Most of the time in music. Because the music kept coming even when everything else shut down. Even the artists who were holding back for better conditions ended up releasing EVERY ALBUM ON EARTH starting about September 18th. There was always music, good music, interesting music, beautiful music, and while that doesn’t compensate for a terrible year, it was something.
Here are 10 albums I loved best from 2020, with links to reviews or other articles I’ve written about them.
1. Gunn-Truscinski — Soundkeeper (Three Lobed)
Soundkeeper by Gunn-Truscinski Duo
A gorgeous exploration of mood and tone, this double CD set includes two extended live cuts and ten more recorded just down the road in Easthampton, Massachusetts. (And I thought nothing ever happened up here.) “Pyramid Merchandise” punches the hardest, John Truscinski balancing rock solid beat keeping with abstracted sculptures of percussive experiment, while Gunn finds the sweetness and the growl in his blues-touched guitar sound. But “Ocean City” is pure lovely respite, with big rounded notes dropping slowly and with grace through wavering transparencies of sustained tone. Long, searching, “Soundkeeper” will rekindle your longing for live improvised music, while the closer “For Eddie Hazel” vibrates with supercharged intensity, the notes and the steady rhythm too bright and beautiful to look at straight on.
2. Six Organs of Admittance — Companion Rises (Drag City)
Companion Rises by Six Organs of Admittance
Chasny imbues the down-home with wonder and the inexplicable with natural grace in this album inspired by stargazing. The album’s name references the way Sirius appears close to Orion, and the rollicking “The Scout Is Here,” commemorates the appearance of the Oumuamua asteroid, but this is no squiggle-y space opera. The music is mainly made of clean, all-natural picking, blues bends, and rambling jangle, though ruptured, periodically, by rushing, whooshing, amplified electronic sounds. Warm, simple clarity is tipped with awe in finger-picked “Black Tea,” while mists and mysteries predominate in evanescent “Worn Down to the Light,” but the joy comes in the balance between the ordinary and the unknowable shimmering like stars in a black sky.
3. Gil Scott-Heron and Makaya McCraven — We’re New Again (XL Recordings)
youtube
When the estate of Gil Scott-Heron asked Chicago composer, percussionist and hip hop chopper Makaya McCraven to reimagine the artist’s last, most personal album, McCraven jumped at the chance to tackle its themes of black struggle, black family and perseverance. McCraven surrounded Scott-Heron’s words with shimmering, post-jazz arrangements that incorporated some of his father’s recordings (his dad is jazz drummer Stephen McCraven) in an ongoing tribute to the blood relatives who shape and equip young black men for a challenging world. The music is wonderful, very different from the original, spare, blues-based arrangements, but they open out the master’s words in an illuminating way. I like, especially, the hustling, shuffling movement of “New York Is Killing Me,” which summons the city’s energy as clearly as the feel of heat rising out of a subway grate in August.
4. Obnox — Savage Raygun (Ever/Never)
Savage Raygun by Obnox
Obnox’s psychedelic mayhem roars like a California wildfire, setting a torch to rock, soul, hip hop, jazz and punk with fuzz-crusted abandon. Icons like Hawkwind flare out and curl into white-hot ash, while even Neil Young’s lick from “Southern Man,” is consumed in the all-encompassing heat of Lamont Thomas’ onslaught (“Young Neezy”). A double album, Savage Raygun covers a lot of ground, but in such a kinetic rush that it seems like one entity that stretched from end to end.
5. Anjimile — Giver Taker (Father/Daughter)
Giver Taker by Anjimile
Anjimile sounds beautifully comfortable with their new vocal range in this second full-length, which follows a gender transition. Pitched low and warm, their voice effortlessly navigates subtle melodies, integrating complex, African-leaning rhythms into songs about love, identify, family friction and the possibility of redemption through embracing one’s authentic self.
6. Osees — Protean Threat (Castleface)
Protean Threat by Oh Sees
John Dwyer has fronted bands called The O.Cs., The Ohsees, Thee Ohsees and now just Osees, evolving from a one-man bedroom pop outfit to a gleefully slopping garage pop project to a droning, krautrocking motoric monster along the way. This newest iteration takes a little of this, a little of that, from the repertoire, putting Dwyer’s best Bo Diddley-esque stomper in years (“If I Had My Way”) next to a wiggy psychedelic freak bomb called “Toadstool” which is adjacent to the dub-scented, narcotic head trip called “Gong of Catastrophe.” The mix works because Dwyer and his band commit to all of it, sequentially and within tracks. It’s the best Osees in years, all the good things in one package.
7. Sam Amidon — S-T (Nonesuch)
youtube
As always, Amidon starts with traditional, mostly folk and blues material and, as always, he transforms it into something more adventurous, spiritual and faintly otherworldly. With Shahzad Ismaily and Antibalas’ Chris Vatalaro to back him up, he breaks down the unyielding contours of pre-modern banjo tunes and porch blues, finding steady drones and complex afro-beat syncopations in their steady melodies. You can hear “Cuckoo Bird” a million times in a million different voices and never hear it as luminous and open-ended as here.
8. James Elkington — Ever Roving Eye (Paradise of Bachelors)
youtube
James Elkington is always pressed for time, maybe because he works regularly for so many other people’s bands (Richard Thompson, Jeff Tweedy, Spencer Tweedy) and collaborates with others (Steve Gunn). And yet his second solo album brims with balm and solace; he finds time in the interstices between warm, jazz-scented, Pentangle-esque verses and intricate flurries of picked and strummed and electric guitar. Even “Nowhere Time,” which exhorts “It is time for you to move,” has an ease and calm to it, while “Moon Tempering” is as still and lovely as winter starlight. Ever-Roving Eye is an album that assures us we’ll get it all done somehow, but just stop for a minute and listen.
9. Jehnny Beth — To Love Is To Live (Arts & Crafts)
youtube
This riveting solo debut from the Savages frontperson is both quieter and more intense than her full-band compositions, juxtaposing incendiary spoken word with the hedonistic thump of the dance floor. Guests are varied—Joe Talbot of IDLES at one pole, the actor Cillian Murphy at the other—but the music never drifts from Jehnny Beth’s singular viewpoint. Compare her to PJ Harvey or Beth Gibbons or Bobby Gillespie as you will (I did), but this is her 100%, and there’s nothing else like it.
10. Cable Ties — Far Enough (Merge)
Far Enough by Cable Ties
Australia churns out quality punk bands like the Hershey factory makes kisses, and Cable Ties, formed in Melbourne by four young rebels, ranks as one of the best to surface here in America this year. “Tell Them Where to Go” is the money track here, all rust-crusted bass crunch and ragged estrogenated vocal energy. But let’s not put them in the “girl band” ghetto. As I said in my review, “The easy thing would be to compare McKechnie’s vibrato-zinging vocals with those of Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker or her verbal agility to Courtney Barnett, but the blunt force and agile violence of the music, brings to mind post-punk bands like the Wipers, Protomartyr and Eddy Current.”
Honorable mention
I also really enjoyed these albums in 2020.
Lewsberg — In this House (12XU)
Damien Jurado — What’s New Tomboy (Mamabird)
Bill Callahan — Gold Record (Drag City)
Mike Polizze — Long Lost Solace Find (Paradise of Bachelors)
Destroyer — Have We Met (Merge)
Decoy w/ Joe McPhee — AC/DC (otoROKU)
Thurston Moore — By the Fire (Daydream Library)
Tobin Sprout — Empty Horse (Fire)
FACS — Void Moments (Trouble in Mind)
Elkhorn — The Storm Sessions (Beyond Beyond Is Beyond)
Howling Hex — Knuckleball Express (Fat Possum)
Wendy Eisenberg — Auto (BaDaBing)
Xetas — The Cypher (12XU)
Califone — Echo Mine (Jealous Butcher)
Chouk Bwa & The Ångströmers — Vodou Alé (Bongo Joe)
Shopping — All or Nothing (Fat Cat)
Bonny Light Horseman — S-T (37d03d)
Tashi Dorji — Stateless (Drag City)
The Slugs — Don’t Touch Me I’m Too Slimy (2214099 Records DK)
Dr. Pete Larson and his Cytotoxic Nyatiti Band — S-T (Dagonetti)

I've been to NY several times & am never disappointed in Little Italy. Their food is Delish! Visit the 9/11 memorial. It is humbling. If your pocketbook can afford it, try to take in a Broadway show (it doesn't have to be Hamilton). There is something magical about taking in a Broadway show in NYC. I saw Chicago. So worth it. Also, I loved the Hershey factory. I recommend the subway/walking over cabs. Honestly, you can't go wrong touring in NY. Just start walking. Enjoy your adventure!!
Thank you so much!!!! i’m an absolute sLUT for italian food and chocolate and broadway shows :)

Back to School Season for Homeschool Families
A season of change is upon us, as we learn to balance homeschooling, work, travel and 1 kid in a traditional private school.
I covet your prayers.
I’m a restless person. We homeschool year round because our family homeschool philosophy incorporates lots of on the go and roadschool travel learning. We truly believe that adventure is the best way to learn. Year round schooling works well with our lifestyle and minimizes learning gaps and relearning.
We’ve enjoyed an busy summer including trips to Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, California road trip (Sequoia NP, Yosemite NP, San Francisco, Pacific Coast Highway, LA, Disneyland and San Diego), Hershey and Lancaster, PA, Smugglers’ Notch Resort in Vermont, a week in the Greater Albany, NY area and we’ll end our summer with time on Martha’s Vineyard.
In addition to all of these amazing trips, we also took many day trip and attended most Hartford Yardgoats Friday home games since kid 2 danced with the hip hop team. It’s been a busy summer!
Yet, alas all good things must come to an end and I’ve finally acknowledged that the lazy days of summer will be gone. This required me to update our color coded school year activities calendar.
Pin for later:
I’ve been holding on to every last bit of summer and have just finally finished cleaning out last year’s curriculum and supplies. We’ve sharpened all the new pencils and for the first time in 6 years I had to buy back to school supplies for a child who will not be part of our Lighthouse Academy.
She’s transitioning to 8th grade at a local private school and is more than ready to spread her wings. How am I feeling? I’m a hot mess of conflicting emotions. On one hand, it feels so good to see that all of our hard work, sacrifice and dedication has paid off. She managed the admission and testing process like a pro and is self directed in her preparation for the SSAT’s for highschool. On the other hand, it feels like a big part of our heart will be missing from our daily homeschool and travel adventures. We’ve always taken our family’s educational journey “one year at a time and one child at a time!” Though my brain knows that this is her time, my heart is mourning the loss of our intact family unit.
We used this summer to try out our new family dynamics. Kid 1 stayed home with hubby while attending a one week STEAM (Science, Technology, Art and Math) camp at a local girls private school, while the three younger kids and I took off on a media trip to PA. While we missed having them with us, it worked well for all involved and we anticipate this becoming the norm for future mid week homeschool and media trips.
My encouragement for the homeschooling mom who’s concerned that she’s not doing enough.
- Meditate on your reasons for homeschooling each one of your children and make that a central part of your learning philosophy.
- Find your village and hold one to them. For me, this village is comprised of a mix of homeschooling, public and private schooling families. I have running PM with my support system prayer warriors. Don’t go at parenting or homeschooling alone. Seek out people who understand your family mission, values and goals and can be a listening ear.
- Don’t compare your children! Recognize that every child is different, has strengthens and areas of opportunities. Teach to your entire child, ensuring that you and the child(ten) maintain a love of learning and focus on acquisition of information rather than task completion.
- Focus on Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic and create an inquisitive environment where asking questions and discussion is encouraged.
- Provide ample opportunities for you kids to have access to books. We keep books in every area of our home and our kids constantly amaze me with their broad knowledge base.
- Limit access to non educational mind numbing technology. This point is not going to make me popular with some. I know that we all need breaks, but trust me setting limits will result in better read, creative, self directed critical thinkers who are able to occupy their time. In our family, there is no non educational technology use during the work week and our weekends are taken up with travel, adventure and sports, leaving little time for the couch.
- If time and resources allow, incorporate roadtrips, day trips, homeschool days and adventure to your routine.
- Realize that nothing’s permanent. If a curriculum is not working, move on to one that is. You’re family is unique and don’t feel pressured to use something because it’s what everyone else uses. There were instances when I was recomended a top selling history or language arts curriculum that I found to be incredibly biased and ethnocentric and did not use it with our kids. One time, I actually handed kid 1 a history book and a pencil and gave her permission to edit all of the misrepresentation, ethnocentrism and micro aggression in the text.
- Find your outlet. Writing and travel are some of mine. In addition, I earned my 1st degree black belt in Taekwondo and while I’ve taken most of the summer off, I was back this week and am looking forward to that routine in the fall.
Follow our family’s travel and homeschooling adventures...

CRAWFORD: WOLF PACK WEEKLY: September 30-October 6, 2019
BY: Bob Crawford, Hartford Wolf Pack HARTFORD, CT - The Wolf Pack kick off their 23rd season of AHL action this Saturday, October 5, with a home-ice date against the defending Calder Cup champions, the Charlotte Checkers. The Wolf Pack played three preseason games in preparation for the 2019-20 campaign and came out of that slate with a 1-2-0-0 record. Nick Jones scored three goals in the two games, and fellow rookie Patrick Newell chipped in three assists. This week: The Wolf Pack have a back-to-back set of home games on the docket for the season’s opening weekend. The Charlotte Checkers visit the XL Center for the season opener this Saturday, October 5, with faceoff at 7:00 PM. Then, on Sunday, the Wolf Pack host their in-state rivals the Bridgeport Sound Tigers for a 3:00 game. Saturday, October 5 vs. the Charlotte Checkers (Carolina) at the XL Center, 7:00 PM Free Wolf Pack magnetic schedules will be given away to the first 5,000 fans at this game, presented by Pepsi. The Checkers are the reigning AHL champions, having defeated the Chicago Wolves in a five-game Calder Cup final to capture the franchise’s first AHL title. That was after Charlotte also posted the league’s best regular-season record, going 51-17-7-1 for 110 points, 15 points better than second-place Bridgeport in the Atlantic Division. Despite the championship victory in 2018-19, Checkers head coach Mike Vellucci and the Carolina organization parted ways. Charlotte’s new head man is former assistant coach Ryan Warsofsky. The top performer from last year’s Calder Cup team still in the organization is Checker goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic. He won the 2018-19 Baz Bastien Trophy as the AHL’s top goaltender, leading league netminders in wins, goals-against average, and minutes-played (34-9-5, 2.26, 91.6, 4 SHO in 51 GP). This is the first of eight meetings on the season between the Wolf Pack and the Checkers, and the first of four Charlotte visits to the XL Center. The Wolf Pack went 1-7-0-0 in 2018-19 against the Checkers, who won each of the last seven encounters between the two clubs after a 5-3 Wolf Pack win in the first meeting December 1. At this and every Wolf Pack Friday or Saturday home game, fans are encouraged to come early for “Hockey Happy Hour” in the XL Center’s Comcast Coliseum Club. From 5:00 PM until puck drop, a $5 wrist band gives fans access to the “Chill Zone” of the Coliseum Club, which features an appetizer buffet and $2 beers, presented by Minuteman Press. In a ten-game season series last year, the Wolf Pack went 4-3-2-1 against their Nutmeg-State adversaries, including a 2-1-1-1 record in home action vs. Bridgeport. The Sound Tigers finished in second place in the Atlantic Division in 2018-19, with a record of 43-24-6-3 for 95 points. That put them one point ahead of third-place Hershey and 15 points behind division-winning Charlotte. Defenseman Sebastian Aho finished fifth among AHL blueliners in assists last season, and stood second on the Bridgeport team in assists and tied for second in points, with 9-37-46 in 67 games. Why are you driving across the country alone?
A year ago I left a really awesome job at New York Public Library to go to a school no one on earth has ever heard of: Miami Ad School (in New York). I wanted to reset my career, I wanted to write and create lots of things for a living, and I wanted to be able to afford a door on my bedroom one day. Advertising school seemed like a good way to get there. Also a year ago, I got formally diagnosed with bipolar and started meds. I eulogized my personality to friends because I assumed I wouldn’t be myself anymore when the meds dulled my brain, stripped me of all creativity, and left me an empty shell of a human. It was terrifying and I cried a lot, but that’s not terribly abnormal for a someone with bipolar. (Note: I’m VERY open about all of this because I hate thinking about all of the things I lost by listening to horror stories and feeling alone in this. No one should be afraid to talk to others and get the help they need as soon as possible.)
Annnnnd now, I’m at a school full of the weirdo creative people I’ve been looking around for everywhere, doing work I really love. And I finally understand what it feels like to have a brain that works! Meds are amazing!
Like Pete Davidson’s engagement to Ariana Grande, it’s fucking lit, Jimmy. (Translation: shit’s going great and I can’t believe it.)
It’s weird to be in this really good place. It feels like the right time to do something big and dumb, and I probably won’t have this kind of time off from obligations again for many years.
So I’m heading out on a three week solo road trip. Just me, all the driving, endless hours of letting my brain do what it wants uninterrupted. It’s the longest trip I’ve taken in years, and long trips tend to really test my ability to be sane. Thailand last year before the meds kicked in was quite a mess. Crying on unbelievably gorgeous beaches is not a good look.
Over the last few months, I’ve turned my car, Ruth Honda Fitsberg, into a mobile campsite that’ll take me from:
New York > Cleveland > Chicago (hi, Elise and Galen!) > Omaha > Badlands National Park > Mount Rushmore > Black Hills National Forest > Yellowstone National Park > Grand Teton National Park > Arches National Park (ciao, Elissa and Ryan!) > Canyonlands National Park > Rocky Mountain National Park > Denver (yaaas Alex!) > Topeka > St. Louis > Columbus > Hershey Park > Home.
Here she is in all her glory. Each bin is labeled like the work of a crazy person, and the bins convert into a fairly comfortable bed! I even have curtains when I need them.
I don’t really know how this is going to go. But I’ve got a Leslie Knope-style binder with lots of ideas in it, I’ve got a bunch of audiobooks, I’ve planned with a lot of intensity, I’m visiting a few friends en route, and my road snacks are amazing, so I guess that’s a good start. I also have a tent! And water! So prepared.
I’ll be posting photos and updates and stuff here, probably not quite this long. This is ultimately more for me to be able to look back down the line and read all my stupid thoughts, like I’ve done for past long adventures and plans. But if you’re a person who feels like reading this, hi! Stay tuned.

The X-Files, Fight Club, and More – The Weekend Chill

Last Friday, Syfy gave us a new image and premiere date for Krypton, the Superman prequel series set on his native planet about 200 years before his birth. It’ll arrive March 21.
Over the weekend, John Williams revealed in an interview that he’d be composing a theme for Solo: A Star Wars Story. The rest of the score is still being handled by John Powell. The standalone Han Solo film releases May 25.
The 32 Most Anticipated Movies of 2018
On Tuesday, Netflix released a brief teaser for A Series of Unfortunate Events season 2, starring Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf. The show returns March 30, and adapts books five to nine.
Later that day, Paramount announced that the next Cloverfield movie – which may or may not be called God Particle – has been moved back to April 20 from February. The film stars Daniel Brühl, Elizabeth Debicki, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw among others.
On Wednesday, Netflix said that a Bright sequel is in the works, with stars Will Smith and Joel Edgerton along with director David Ayer all attached. This confirms the Bloomberg report from two weeks ago.
That’s all the entertainment news for this week. Welcome back to The Weekend Chill, your one-stop destination for what to watch, play, or listen to this weekend. Here are the best picks:
TV: The X-Files Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny reprise their roles as FBI special agents for an eleventh year in the second year of the show’s revival era, whose rating success (despite negative critical reception) convinced Fox to greenlit a 10-episode new season. The premiere and finale will focus on the long-arc storyline, with the other episodes being standalone.
Recurring and guest stars include Annabeth Gish, Robbie Amell, Lauren Ambrose, Karin Konoval, Barbara Hershey, and Haley Joel Osment. Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny) attempt to locate their son at the beginning of the series, while battling a mysterious organisation led by Erika Price (Hershey).
The X-Files season 1 has gotten average to good reviews from critics, with Vox’s Todd VanDerWerff surprised “how rejuvenated it feels”, and terming it “a damn sight better than the 2016 one”. Uproxx’s Alan Sepinwall concurred with VanDerWerff that it’s not anywhere near its season-three peak, but “it’s much better than it has any business being, particularly given what we got two years ago”.

Grown-ish In the penultimate episode of the third season of ABC’s popular African-American family sitcom Black-ish, the eldest daughter Zoey Johnson (Yar Shahidi) went off to college. Usually, audiences would just see less of her from the next season – as has become the case with the ongoing season 4 – but here, she’s gotten her own spin-off.
Stylised like the original, Grown-ish follows Zoey as she begins her freshman year at Southern California University. Joining her is Charlie Telphy (Deon Cole) – now part of Black-ish’s main cast – f and Aaron (Trevor Jackson), who has a recurring role on Black-ish. New cast members include Francia Raisa, Chris Parnell, Emily Arlook, and Jordan Buhat.
Reviews for the show’s first season – critics have seen a few episode – are mostly positive, with EW’s Dana Schwartz praising Shahidi’s chemistry with her Latina Republican roommate Ana (Raisa) and the snappy dialogue, while Variety’s Maureen Ryan called it “a smart, breezy expansion of the Black-ish family”.

Rotten Do you like true crime shows and are concerned about food production? This Netflix original documentary series is tailored especially for you then. Rotten focuses on the growing global food industry, exposing the corruption, waste and dangers of your everyday eating habits. “The food industry is under full-scale assault,” the trailer narrates. “The crisis is global.”
Episodes will look at the honey industry – a scam known as Honeygate that involved smuggling in inferior honey from China via Australia to the US – alongside the rise of severe food allergies, chicken farms, organic and unpasteurized milk, and regulation of the fishing industry. The show comes from the same production company that regularly collaborates with Anthony Bourdain.
“In a world where huge global supply-chains are increasingly intertwined and consolidated, this series starts on your dinner plate… and follows the money to the shocking consequences – intended or not – of regulation, innovation and greed,” Netflix’s official description for Rotten reads.

Movies: Fight Club We’re going to talk about Fight Club (sorry). The film that gave the world’s youth endlessly-quotable lines, that gave the generation some good values and some screwed-up ones, and that inspired foolish individuals to start their own fight clubs, completely missing the point the film – directed by David Fincher, and based on Chuck Palahniuk’s novel – was trying to make.
For the unaware, Fight Club stars Edward Norton as the unnamed protagonist and narrator, who’s disgruntled with his white-collar job. He visits support groups for terminal disease patients just to have someone to talk to. He meets Brad Pitt’s soap salesman on a flight one day, and starts a “fight club” with him, where they organise bare-knuckle boxing matches for people like them.
Fight Club was one of the most controversial films of the year in 1999, and though it received polarising reception from critics, it has gone on to become one of the greatest films of its time. Pitt’s acting, Fincher’s work, and the anti-consumerism message make it a must-watch.

L.A. Confidential Two decades on, it’s still a surprise that L.A. Confidential – a brilliantly written, powerfully acted, and gritty depiction of 1953 Los Angeles mixing police corruption and Hollywood – lost most Oscar categories it was nominated in to Titanic. (If you love Titanic, please go away.) But it did pick up two very well-deserved awards, Best Screenplay and Kim Basinger for Best Supporting Actress.
Basinger plays a call girl who looks a lot like a popular film star, and she becomes central to an investigation into a multiple murder at a coffee shop after two detectives – Bud White (Russell Crowe) and Ed Exley (Guy Pearce) – discover ties to the call girl service operator. The film also stars Kevin Spacey as a “Hollywood” detective, so whether that influences your decision to watch it given the recent revelations, is up to you.
L.A. Confidential is one of the best films of its era, with a 99 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 90 score on Metacritic. It’s dark, cynical, pessimistic and twisted, and it manages to craft compelling characters and wade into their psychology, while still being a taut crime thriller.

Fantastic Mr. Fox Wes Anderson has a new stop-motion animated feature on the way, and his previous venture – a comedy based on Roald Dahl’s children’s book about a fox who steals food from three mean and wealthy farmers – is a fantastic (pardon us) family adventure all-around. It’s also got a terrific voice cast: George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Willem Dafoe, and Owen Wilson among others.
Clooney and Streep voice Mr. and Mrs. Fox, who’ve built a peaceful life for themselves after time as thieves. But after 12 years, Mr. Fox’s animal instincts pull him back into his old life as a chicken thief, which puts not just his family but the whole animal community at risk. The farmers are determined to catch him at any cost, which forces the Foxes underground.
Fantastic Mr. Fox is a whole-hearted funny romp for people of all ages, full of personality, charm, wit and emotional undercurrents, and brought to life beautifully by set designers and animation directors, alongside a wonderful score by Alexandre Desplat.

Other mentions: For those who’ve seen every movie listed above, and want something more recent, there are a few choices on Blu-ray: the Tom Cruise-starrer American Made, based on the true story of a pilot who became a drug smuggler for the Medellín Cartel in the 80s; Emma Stone and Steve Carrell in Battle of the Sexes, which is loosely based on the 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs; and Ben Stiller in Brad’s Status, where he re-examines his life while on a college tour with his son.
If you’re on the lookout for more new TV, Showtime has a coming-of-age drama from Lena Waithe – Emmy-winner with Aziz Ansari for Master of None season 2’s “Thanksgiving” episode – called The Chi, with rapper Common as an executive producer. It’s set in the South Side of Chicago with Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton) in the lead, who dreams of opening a restaurant. It starts Sunday in the US, and might be available on Hotstar in India, given the latter’s deal with CBS.
There’s also BBC One mini-series McMafia, inspired by journalist Misha Glenny’s book of the same name, which focuses on the British-raised son of a Russian mafia boss who’s trying to get away from the family business. You can watch it via BBC iPlayer.
Star Trek: Discovery, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, One Day at a Time, and More on Netflix in January
Beyond that, given it’s the start of the month (and year), all streaming services have added tons of new content. On Netflix, you can find the third season of Jane the Virgin; the first and only season of One Punch Man, the anime about a superhero who can kill anyone with one blow and how that depresses him, and both versions of Fullmetal Alchemist, the 2003 one that was made before the manga was complete, and the 2009 edition Brotherhood that’s more faithful to the source material.
Meanwhile, Hotstar now has every single episode of The X-Files, starting from the first episode in 1993 to the latest one that came out this week (as mentioned earlier). It has also brought back The Wire – one of the greatest series of all-time – in addition to all nine seasons of 24, and all 12 seasons of Bones.

World Chocolate Day
Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate…chocolate milk, truffles, Snickers, chocolate cake…indulge in any of the many kinds of chocolate out there.
(Sorry Bread or even Pizza!) Chocolate can enhance and help to create the most luxurious desserts and can even be enjoyed and indulged on its own.

World Chocolate Day
Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate…chocolate milk, truffles, Snickers, chocolate cake…indulge in any of the many kinds of chocolate out there.
(Sorry Bread or even Pizza!) Chocolate can enhance and help to create the most luxurious desserts and can even be enjoyed and indulged on its own.
Fry & Sons.

CRAWFORD: WOLF PACK WEEKLY: February 25-March 3, 2019
BY: Bob Crawford, Hartford Wolf Pack HARTFORD, CT - The Wolf Pack (23-25-6-3, 55 pts., .482) went 2-0-1-0 in three games this past week, stretching a streak of games with at least a standings point to a season-high six (3-0-3-0). The week began with a 3-2 home win over the Springfield Thunderbirds Friday night, in which Brandon Halverson came within 1:33 of his first career AHL shutout before settling for two goals-against on 21 shots, and Vinni Lettieri had a goal and an assist. The Wolf Pack came back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits at home against Providence on Saturday but ultimately fell to the Bruins 3-2 in overtime. Lettieri scored his first career pro shorthanded goal in that game, extending a pro-career-high goal-scoring streak to five games (5-2-7), the longest by a Wolf Pack player this year. Hartford then turned the tables on the P-Bruins in a rematch Sunday in Providence, as Steven Fogarty struck for his first pro hat trick, and a pro-career-high four points and Chris Nell made 29 saves in his first AHL appearance of the season, leading the Wolf Pack to a 4-1 triumph. Hershey enters the week 31-21-0-3 for 65 points and in third place in the Atlantic Division, one point ahead of Providence and four points up on Lehigh Valley.
