Pilgrimage of Grace
The Pilgrimage of Grace is the collective name for a series of rebellions in northern England, first in Lincolnshire and then in Yorkshire and elsewhere between October and December 1536 CE. Nobles, clergy, monks, and commoners united to oppose both the decision of Henry VIII of England (r. 1509-1547 CE) to split the Church in England from Rome and his policy of closing monasteries and confiscating their estates, the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Other grievances included the fear of new taxes and confiscation of Church property and a general lack of political representation in the north of England. The Pilgrimage of Grace, so-called because its participants considered themselves 'pilgrims', did not threaten London, but it was the largest rebellion of the Tudor period (1485-1603 CE). The 40,000 protestors were dispersed by the threat of armed force and false promises of pardons and reforms but, ultimately, many of the leaders, including the lawyer Robert Aske and Lord Darcy, were executed as traitors and Henry continued apace with the Reformation in England.

DEATH OF KING HENRY VIII
THE DEATH OF KING HENRY VIII
28 January 1547 (age 55 years)
King Charles I (d. 1649) was buried in the same vault as Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, he was buried on the left (image), Henry VIII’s tomb is in the middle and Seymour’s tomb is intact on the right. Henry VIII’s coffin was badly damaged and workers at the chapel thought that the coffin had exploded from within.
King Henry VIII was obese at the end of his life; he was covered with painful pus boils which stunk. His problems started on 24 January 1536 when he had a jousting accident which resulted in a leg wound which was difficult to treat.
Henry VIII died in 1547, aged 55 in the Palace of Whitehall. The tomb he wanted to be buried in wasn’t finished and he was buried in a vault at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, next to his third wife, Jane Seymour (who died in 1537).
The tomb was opened once more during the reign of Queen Anne, to bury her infant in a tiny coffin on top of Charles I coffin.
St George’s Chapel was completed during Henry VIII’s reign and he had planned on having a magnificent tomb but it was never completed, not even after his death. Instead he had a stone that marks the site of his burial. Henry VIII and Seymour were only supposed to be buried at St. George’s Chapel temporary whilst his tomb was to be constructed at Westminster. Each of Henry VIII’s three children intended to complete their father’s memorial but with no success.
When Henry VIII died the size of his body was a problem for burial, it was estimated he was around 180kg. There was a rumor that his coffin burst open during his funeral rites due to his obesity and that fluid leaked out and dogs were found licking up Henry’s blood and fat.
The actual tomb or monument that was being built for Henry VIII wasn’t used for him, apparently due to his overweight body. The tomb was originally carved for Cardinal Wolsey (d. 1530); and the sarcophagus and base was then taken to be used for Henry VIII. The said tomb is used for the remains of Admiral Lord Nelson (d. 1805) in the crypt of St Pauls Cathedral.

27th May 1541, execution of Margaret Pole, 8th Countess of Salisbury, and daughter of George, Duke of Clarence, brother of kings Edward IV and Richard III. One of the last survivors of the Plantagenet dynasty after the Wars of the Roses, she was arrested for treason upon the orders of Henry VIII, and kept in the Tower of London for two and a half years. One account upon her execution states that it was performed badly, with her claiming her innocence, and refusing to place her head on the block. The executioner then attempted to behead her, with her head and shoulders hacked to pieces. Margaret was buried in the chapel within the Tower of London, the same site where Anne Boleyn’s body had been placed on the 19th May 1536. Her father had also been executed at the Tower of London in 1478, for ‘unnatural, loathly treasons’. A rumour arising after his execution stated he was drowned in a butt of Malmsey wine, as his body was later found with his head still attached. This story is also represented in Shakespeare’s ‘Richard III’. Further supporting this historical rumour, is a portrait thought to be of Margaret Pole, showing a bracelet upon her right hand with a wine barrel charm upon it. *patiently waits for feather emoji* The Bristowe Hat, of uncertain provenance, is believed to have possibly belonged to Henry VIII. Sadly due to the great fire of London in 1666, it is one of the only fashion pieces from Tudor times still in existence. (I learned all about it in my royal fashion history course from @futurelearn @historicroyalpalaces)

On This Day In Royal History . 28th January 1547 . King Henry VIII died . . ⬛ Henry’s obesity hastened his death at the age of 55, which occurred on 28 January 1547 in the Palace of Whitehall, on what would have been his father’s 90th birthday (King Henry VII). . ◼ He allegedly uttered his last words: “Monks! Monks! Monks!” perhaps in reference to the monks he caused to be evicted during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. . ◼ On 14 February 1547 Henry’s coffin lay overnight at Syon Monastery, en route for burial in St George’s Chapel, Windsor. . ◼ Twelve years before in 1535 a Franciscan friar named William Peyto (or Peto, Petow), (d.1558 or 1559), had preached before the King at Greenwich Palace “that God’s judgements were ready to fall upon his head & that dogs would lick his blood, as they had done to Ahab”, whose infamy rests upon 1 Kings 16:33: “And Ahab did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him”. . ◼ The prophecy was said to have been fulfilled during this night at Syon, when some “corrupted matter of a bloody colour” fell from the coffin to the floor. Henry VIII was interred in St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, next to Jane Seymour. Over a hundred years later, King Charles I (1625–1649) was buried in the same vault. . . . #OnThisDayInHistory #ThisDayinHistory #TheYear1547 #HenryVIII #HenryVIIIofEngland #KingHenryVIII #HouseofTudor #TudorDynasty #TheTudors #Monarchy #KingofEngland #EnglishMonarchy #History #Heritage #England #D28Jan #BritishMonarchy #RoyalHistory #OnThisDay #TudorHistory #Tudors #Tudor #royalfamily Royal Collection Trust/© Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 2020 . On This Day In Royal History . 30 May 1536 . King Henry VIII married Jane Seymour . . ◼ King Henry VIII was betrothed to Jane on 20 May 1536, just one day after Anne Boleyn’s execution. . ◼ The couple married at the Palace of Whitehall, Whitehall, London, in the Queen’s closet by Bishop Gardiner on 30 May 1536. . ◼ As a wedding gift the King made her a grant of 104 manors in four counties as well as a number of forests & hunting chases for her jointure, the income to support her during their marriage. . ◼ She was publicly proclaimed as queen consort on 4 June. Jane’s well-publicized sympathy for the late Queen Katharine & the Lady Mary showed her to be compassionate & made her a popular figure with the common people & most of the courtiers. . ◼ She was never crowned because of plague in London, where the coronation was to take place. Henry may have been reluctant to crown Jane before she had fulfilled her duty as a queen consort by bearing him a son & a male heir. . 👑 As queen, Jane Seymour was said to be strict & formal. Jane would form a very close relationship with Mary Tudor (Henry’s sister). The lavish entertainments, gaiety, & extravagance of the Queen’s household, which had reached its peak during the time of Anne Boleyn, was replaced by a strict enforcement of decorum. . ◼ For example, she banned the French fashions that Anne Boleyn had introduced. Politically, Seymour appears to have been conservative. Her only reported involvement in national affairs, in 1536, was when she asked for pardons for participants in the Pilgrimage of Grace. Henry is said to have rejected this, reminding her of the fate her predecessor met with when she “meddled in his affairs”. . . . #OnThisDayInHistory #ThisDayInHistory #TheYear1536 #RoyalWedding #d30may #HenryVIII #HenryVIIIofEngland #KingHenryVIII #KingofEngland #QueenJaneSeymour #JaneSeymour #HouseofTudor #TheTudors #TudorDynasty #Tudor #History #RoyaltyinArt #EnglishMonarchy #Otd #OnThisDay #BritishMonarchy #RoyalHistory #kingandqueen #kingsandqueens #tudors #theking #thequeen #royalfamily #Weddingday #Royalweddings (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CA0vfzQjJeS/?igshid=bkpzl5qrpu74

On This Day In Royal History . 9 July 1540 . King Henry VIII annuls his marriage to his fourth wife, Anne of Cleves. . . ◼ Anne was commanded to leave the Court on 24 June, & on 6 July she was informed of her husband’s decision to reconsider the marriage. . ◼ Witness statements were taken from a number of courtiers & two physicians which register the king’s disappointment at her appearance. Henry had also commented to Thomas Heneage & Anthony Denny that he could not believe she was a virgin. . ◼ Shortly afterwards, Anne was asked for her consent to an annulment, to which she agreed. Thomas Cromwell, the moving force behind the marriage, was attainted for treason. . ◼ The marriage was annulled on 9 July 1540, on the grounds of non-consummation & her pre-contract to Francis of Lorraine. . ◼ On 28 July Henry married his fifth wife, Catherine Howard: on the same day Thomas Cromwell was executed, in theory for treason, but in practice as a scapegoat for the doomed marriage. . ◼ The former queen received a generous settlement, including Richmond Palace, & Hever Castle, home of Henry’s former in-laws, the Boleyns. Anne of Cleves House, in Lewes, Sussex, is just one of many properties she owned; she never lived there. . ◼ Henry & Anne became good friends she was an honorary member of the King’s family & was referred to as "the King’s Beloved Sister". . ◼ She was invited to court often &, out of gratitude for her not contesting the annulment, Henry decreed that she would be given precedence over all women in England save his own wife & daughters. . . . #OnThisDayInHistory #ThisDayInHistory #TheYear1540 #d9jul #HenryVIII #KingHenryVIII #HenryVIIIofEngland #QueenConsort #AnneofCleves #HouseofTudor #TheTudors #Tudor #TudorDynasty #Monarchy #History #Royalty #EnglishMonarchy #theking #RoyalHistory #KingofEngland #BritishMonarchy Royal #otd Collection Trust/© Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II 2020 (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCb2uqxDKXJ/?igshid=ld01x4de0kfz

On This Day In Royal History 6th January 1540 - King Henry VIII married Anne of Cleves . Around the year 1539, Henry wished to marry once again to ensure the succession. Thomas Cromwell, now Earl of Essex & chief minister to Henry, suggested Anne, the sister of the Duke of Cleves, who was seen as an important ally in case of a Roman Catholic attack on England, for the duke fell between Lutheranism & Catholicism. ◼ Hans Holbein the Younger was dispatched to Cleves to paint a portrait of Anne for the king. Despite speculation that Holbein painted her in an overly flattering light, it is more likely that the portrait was accurate; Holbein remained in favour at court. ◼ After regarding Holbein’s portrayal, & urged by the complimentary description of Anne given by his courtiers, the king agreed to wed Anne. ◼ Despite Henry’s very vocal misgivings, the two were married on 6 January 1540 at the royal Palace of Placentia in Greenwich, London by Archbishop Thomas Cranmer. ◼ The phrase “God send me well to keep” was engraved around Anne’s wedding ring. Immediately after arriving in England, Anne conformed to the Anglican form of worship, which Henry expected. ◼ It was not long before Henry wished to annul the marriage so he could marry another (Catherine Howard, they married on 28th July 1540). Anne did not argue, & confirmed that the marriage had never been consummated. ◼ The subject of Anne’s previous marriage arrangements with the Duke of Lorraine’s son eventually provided for the answer, one complicated enough that the remaining impediments to an annulment were thus removed. ◼ Henry’s fourth marriage was subsequently dissolved, & Anne received the title of “The King’s Beloved Sister”, two houses & a generous allowance. . #OnThisDayInHistory #thisdayinhistory #theyear1540 #d6jan #HenryVIII #HenryVIIIofEngland #RoyalWedding #KingHenryVIII #AnneofCleves #History #houseoftudor #EnglishMonarchy #BritishMonarchy #Wedding #London #Greenwich #OTD #OnThisDay #RoyalHistory #Instahistory #instaroyals #TudorHistory #tudor #Tudors (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6_vo-ugtTB/?igshid=1frmopfkh4ynt
