31st August 1422, death of King of England Henry V, also known as Henry of Monmouth, who had reigned as king from 1413. Despite his military successes during the ‘Hundred Years War’, especially in his overwhelming victory against the French at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, Henry V died suddenly on this day of either dysentery or heatstroke, at the age of 35. He was succeeded by his only son who became Henry VI at only a few months old. Attempting to hold on to his father's achievements in France, Henry VI’s reign was diminished due to military, diplomatic, and economic problems, alongside periods of his mental instability. These problems propelled his cousin Richard of the House of York into the spotlight as a favourable alternative, leading to the Wars of the Roses in 1455. Henry VI reigned until May 1471, where he was executed in the Tower of London on the orders of Yorkist King Edward IV. 24th August 1680, death of Anglo- Irish officer Colonel Thomas Blood, who in 1671 attempted to steal the Crown Jewels from the Tower of London. Captured while he and his accomplices fled the Tower with the Crown and Jewels stuffed into their clothing, Blood had refused to answer to anyone but the King, and was brought before Charles II. The King asked Blood, "What if I should give you your life?", with Blood replying, "I would endeavour to deserve it, Sire!” Amazingly Blood was not only pardoned but also given land in Ireland. An historical speculation for Charles' actions is that he had a respect for audacious scoundrels such as Blood. This can also be seen in Charles’ nickname of ‘Swift Nick’, given to highwayman and rogue John Nevison in 1676. Dying on this day, Blood shortly after exhumed to make sure that he did not fake his own death, in order to pursue another plot. Blood's epitaph begins: ‘Here lies the man who boldly hath run through More villainies than England ever knew’. 6th July 1483 Richard III is crowned King of England after deposing his nephew Edward V, who is never crowned. Edward V subsequently disappears from history after being imprisoned in the Tower of London with his brother, and is assumed murdered by his uncle Richard. Although these claims are even today disputed. 6th July 1535, execution upon the orders of Henry VIII, of Renaissance humanist, author and statesman, Sir Thomas More. More began his political career in 1504, rising in influence to become secretary and personal adviser to King Henry VIII. During the reformation More steadfastly opposed protestantism, declaring himself loyal to the Pope, and to Rome. This led in 1530 to More’s refusal to sign the letter requesting Pope Clement VII to annul Henry's marriage to Catherine of Aragon, three years later More further refused to attend the coronation of Anne Boleyn as the Queen of England. The eventual conflict between himself and Henry VIII, led to his imprisonment in the Tower of London. More was eventually tried for treason and sentenced to be hanged, drawn, and quartered. Henry commuted the sentence to execution by beheading, which took place on this day. 16 years after his execution, his work ‘Utopia’ which he had written in 1516, was published in England; describing the conditions of social harmony, toleration and freedom of an imaginary island. The work gave rise to the later literary genres of Utopian and dystopian fiction. 10th July 1553, Lady Jane Grey, is proclaimed Queen of England, after the death of her cousin Edward VI. The only male heir of Henry VIII, Edward died on this day at the age of 15, naming Lady Jane Grey his successor excluding his half-sisters, (continued in the comments). #richardiii #princesinthetower #toweroflondon🇬🇧 #henryviii #henryviiiwives #tudor #tudorhistory #thetudors #houseofyork #houseoflancaster #yorkist #lancastrian #thomasmoore #catherineofaragon #anneboleyn #ladyjanegrey #kingsofengland #queensofengland #edwardvi #tudorhistory #15thcentury #16thcentury #bloodymary #ninedaysqueen #warsoftheroses #historystory #historicalstories #historyfacts #diedonthisday #onthisdayinhistory #interestinghistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CRHNxC2lX6n/?utm_medium=tumblr

22nd June 1535, execution by beheading of martyr Cardinal John Fisher at the Tower of London, on the orders on Henry VIII. Named a cardinal shortly before his execution, Fisher refused to acknowledge Henry as supreme head of the Church of England, and during the early days of the English Reformation plotted to overthrow Henry with desired support from Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Prior to his execution, an attempted poisoning of his household took place in 1531. Fisher’s cook Richard Roose, was found guilty and executed by being boiled alive. 24th June 1497, the leaders of the Cornish rebellion Michael An Gof and Thomas Flamank are hung drawn and quartered upon the orders of Henry VII. The Cornish rebellion was a revolt against taxation to pay for an invasion of Scotland in response for the Scottish crown’s support for the pretender Perkin Warbeck. Warbeck claimed to be the second son of Edward IV, and one of the Princes in the Tower; whose claim to the throne would be stronger than that of Henry VII, after his defeat of Richard III. After marching to London, the Cornish rebellion was defeated at the Battle of Deptford Bridge on the 17th June. Executed at the Tower of London, An Gof is reported to have stated that his legacy would have "a name perpetual and a fame permanent and immortal". Their heads were displayed on London Bridge. On the same day in 1509, Henry VII’s son Henry Tudor is crowned as Henry VIII at Westminster Abbey, alongside Catherine of Aragon, who is crowned Queen. Four days later he celebrated his 18th birthday. 25th June 1483, The House of Lords and Commons declare King Edward V of England, illegitimate in favour of his uncle the Duke of Gloucester, who becomes Richard III.
