Pretended to be Richard ‘Princes in the Tower’ and was executed

            Whilst Henry VII was King of England, a young man appeared and claimed to be Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York, the youngest of the two ‘Princes in the Tower’ - the son of King Edward VI. In 1490, he claimed that his brother Edward V had been murdered but he had been spared due to his age.

            The Princes in the Tower were King Edward VI’s sons Edward and Richard, and if they had been still alive they would have had the right to the throne. After the death of King Edward VI, his son Edward was to be king - however, Richard III snatched the throne away and placed the Princes in the Tower of London. The Princes disappeared and had both been presumably murdered under the orders of Richard III.

            Warbeck won the support of Edward IV’s sister Margaret of Burgundy, who was a Yorkist and didn’t want Henry VII on the throne. She knew very little of her nephews and didn’t know what they looked like. Warbeck attempted invasions of Ireland (1491) and England (1495), and persuaded James IV of Scotland to invade England in 1496 and married Lady Catherine Gordon whilst in Edinburgh. Pro-Yorkist sympathy helped those to back Warbeck. Later James IV grew tired of Warbeck and wanted to be rid of him, and refused to give him a ship and crew.

            In 1497, Warbeck landed in Cromwell with a few thousand troops, but was then captured and imprisoned in the Tower of London. The ringleaders were executed and those supporting Warbeck were fined. Henry VII declared Warbeck an imposter. 

            Warbeck confessed that he was born in Tournai, Belgium in 1474. He was taken to Antwerp by his mother when he was 10 and learned Dutch and worked for a local English merchant John Strewe. He wanted to travel to other countries and was employed by a Breton merchant who took him to Cork, Ireland in 1491 and when he was aged 17 he learned how to speak English. The citizens in Cork wanted revenge on Henry VII, so the Yorkist supporter, John Atwater (a former Mayor) helped him portray Richard.

            Henry VII believed that Warbeck was being used as a puppet for the Yorkist cause and treated Warbeck well, he had Warbeck released from the Tower of London and was permitted to stay at the royal court. After spending 8 months in the English court he attempted to escape with Edward, 17th Earl of Warwick (the son of George Duke of Clarence) in 1499, he was caught and sent back to the Tower of London. Warbeck read out a confession and was hanged and buried in Austin Friars, London.

            There was another pretender called Lambert Simnel who claimed to be Edward V, he was also used as a figurehead for a rebellion against Henry VII in 1487. His life was spared due to his youth and gained work at the royal court.

7th September 1497, claiming to be Richard of Shrewsbury, the Duke of York and heir to the English throne, Perkin Warbeck is acclaimed by followers as King Richard IV on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. At the end of the Wars of the Roses in 1485, with the stability of the Tudor dynasty founded by Henry VII, not yet solidified; Warbeck’s claim was considered both a serious threat, and a rallying call for the fading remnants of Yorkist support. Claiming to be one of the lost ‘Princess in the Tower’ who disappeared in 1483, after being supposedly murdered by their uncle Richard III; Warbeck as the son of Edward V, brother of Richard III, if he was who he claimed; would possess a right to Henry VII’s crown. Warbeck’s followers however melted away the following month, and he was captured and imprisoned in the Tower of London, where he retracted his claim. Whether he was in fact an imposter or the son of Edward V is still a mystery, and a contentious historical debate. 7th September 1533, birth of Tudor Queen of England and Ireland Elizabeth I, daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. Elizabeth was two and a half years old when her mother was executed, and she was declared illegitimate. Growing up in a climate of fear, as she witnessed the short reign’s of her half brother Edward VI, and half sister Mary I, and the execution of her cousin Lady Jane Grey; Elizabeth involved herself in her education, becoming one of the most educated women of her generation. Her protestant education fan foul however of her half sister Mary, known to history as ‘Bloody Mary’, and Elizabeth was imprisoned in the Tower of London for a year in 1554 after the failed ‘Wyatt's rebellion’. As Richard walks, he’s close enough behind Lizzie to tell her, “Our mother hid me on the night the soldiers came for you. We didn’t say goodbye as you were angry with me. 5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?

I mean...it's not a no lol. It's usually more that shipper behavior (particularly toward fans of other other ships) makes me dislike their pairing before I really get invested in it. Also when there is a huge amount of content for one ship in a single fandom (vs literally any other ships), I am usually less interested in consuming or creating content for that pairing.

8. Have you received anon hate? What about?

Yes, but not over anything very interesting, at least that I remember. Just run of the mill purity culture stuff bc I said something like "people are free to consume and create x content even if you, a random internet stranger, thinks it's toxic" etc.

25. How would you end XXX/Would you change the ending of XXX?

I assume this is for TLK, so I will say: It would be interesting for Uhtred to gain Bebbanburg but for that to be a hollow victory in some way (maybe due to losing his kids, or losing contact with them, or finding out it's not all it was cracked up to be). It would also be interesting if Brida's confrontation with him was there/near there as sort of a full circle thing, though I'm not sure how likely that is. I'd like to see them lean into the identity conflict and the tension between his idealism and the reality of all the losses it's taken to reach the goal he's been working towards. In terms of even less realistic endings: I would like to see Aethelstan coming into his own with credit given to Aethelflaed for raising and mentoring him but that too has been taken from Aethelflaed in the show, it seems. I'm not bitter (I'm totally bitter).

22nd June 1535, execution by beheading of martyr Cardinal John Fisher at the Tower of London, on the orders on Henry VIII. Named a cardinal shortly before his execution, Fisher refused to acknowledge Henry as supreme head of the Church of England, and during the early days of the English Reformation plotted to overthrow Henry with desired support from Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Prior to his execution, an attempted poisoning of his household took place in 1531. Fisher’s cook Richard Roose, was found guilty and executed by being boiled alive. 24th June 1497, the leaders of the Cornish rebellion Michael An Gof and Thomas Flamank are hung drawn and quartered upon the orders of Henry VII. The Cornish rebellion was a revolt against taxation to pay for an invasion of Scotland in response for the Scottish crown’s support for the pretender Perkin Warbeck. Warbeck claimed to be the second son of Edward IV, and one of the Princes in the Tower; whose claim to the throne would be stronger than that of Henry VII, after his defeat of Richard III. After marching to London, the Cornish rebellion was defeated at the Battle of Deptford Bridge on the 17th June. Executed at the Tower of London, An Gof is reported to have stated that his legacy would have "a name perpetual and a fame permanent and immortal". Their heads were displayed on London Bridge. On the same day in 1509, Henry VII’s son Henry Tudor is crowned as Henry VIII at Westminster Abbey, alongside Catherine of Aragon, who is crowned Queen. Four days later he celebrated his 18th birthday. 25th June 1483, The House of Lords and Commons declare King Edward V of England, illegitimate in favour of his uncle the Duke of Gloucester, who becomes Richard III.
