I continued to show the Queen my workshop and handiwork, answering her questions. I felt his eyes on me, the back of my neck prickling.

I glanced at him only once, curious as well. He was tall; five, maybe six, inches taller than me. He had bright blue eyes, neatly fluffy blond hair, and smooth, pale skin. His face was an oval shape, his jawline smooth, a soft curve to his cheeks. He was very beautiful, and I had a hard tearing my eyes away from him.

When he and the Queen left, I went over the memory of him again and again while I made a test sword for the Queen.

At sunrise, Gregale and Anechoic’s wings line up, and Darcy gets up from the saddle and steps onto Anechoic. He crouches on Anechoic’s shoulder right in front of me. We transverse a few more words before he remounts Gregale and flies back to the Palace.

Before he leaves, he gives me a swift kiss on the back of my hand.

Alex Claremont-Diaz, Red, White & Royal Blue: Listen, who couldn't love Alex? Both book and movie him are treasures but I'm mainly focusing on movie Alex. Like...who said he was allowed to be that pretty?! He's so aesthetically pleasing it's almost annoying. I love him very much.

Henry Fox-Mountchristen-Windsor(Hanover-Stuart-Fox), Red, White & Royal Blue: You can't have one without the other! Henry is just so precious to me, book and movie Henry both. But movie Henry's pathetic wet cat energy has capitivated me. What can I say, I love big sad eyes. He's babygirl.

Nick Nelson, Heartstopper: Listen...listen. I love 'em all. I do! The main group of this show are all my children, and I adore them. Charlie and Tara a lil' bit more. But Nick has a special place in my heart that I can't explain. I love him so much.

Jesper Fahey, Shadow & Bone/Six of Crows: I only got into the show and books this year (yes I'm devastated it's gone), but they're both soooo good! And Jesper is just the best, like, he's so funny and complex and badass. I love him very much.

Wylan Hendriks, Shadow & Bone/Six of Crows: They're cutie pies, book and show Wylan. They're also dangerous badasses and sassy to boot. I love them both, but I fell in love with show Wylan first and honestly, I'll never look back. How can I.

15th Doctor, Doctor Who: So far we have had about 20 minutes of the 15th Doctor, and I am already in love with them. IN LOVE. I just...I am so ready for their series, and I can't WAIT for the Christmas special!

Muriel, Good Omens: How could anyone hate this bean?! Honestly a fantastic addition to the cast of characters in this show, and definitely a breakout star to me! I hope Muriel returns for season 3 because they truly were a delight, anytime they were on screen.

Jaskier, The Witcher: In it's last season (to me), The Witcher finally decided to give Jaskier the respect he deserves. As always, his songs were fantastic and his character being in it prompted me to watch spin-off Blood Origin (which I loved!). Jaskier has been my character since I began watching The Witcher, and he remains my character.

Eddie Kaspbrak, IT franchise: Fell deep back into my IT hyperfixation and actaully managed to write loads of my fix-it fic I started back in 2019. Both young Eddie from 2017 IT and adult Eddie from the 1990 movie are my babies, I adore them both. Eddie Kaspbrak is just such a fun and interesting character, especially to write!

Inej Ghafa, Shadow & Bone/Six of Crows: Yes I know, the 3rd character from this show/book series. But I can't help it, I only discovered it this year! Inej is a wonderfully complex, tragic yet strong character, and I wish the show had time to explore her and her story more. She's fabulous, and brought to life so wonderfully by Amita Suman.

De Volendam was een Nederlands stoompassagiersschip van 15 434 ton, gebouwd in 1922 op de scheepswerf van Harland & Wolff Ltd., Goven, Glasgow, Schotland en afgewerkt in oktober 1922 in Belfast, Noord-Ierland. De torpedo sloeg in boegruim 1 een gat van 16 bij 10 meter, waardoor de ruimcompartimenten 1 en 2 overstroomden. Al snel was men genoodzaakt om het schip te verlaten, maar dit bleek geen probleem te zijn, want dit was in de haven van Liverpool al geoefend door de passagiers; vooral de kinderen zongen de "Roll out the Barrel", totdat ze werden gered door drie andere schepen uit het konvooi; de Britse stoomvrachtvaarder Bassethound, het Britse tankerstoomschip Valldemosa en het Noorse motorvrachtschip Olaf Fostenes, die met hen terugkeerden naar Groot-Brittannië en Canada. Het enige dodelijke ongeval was een bemanningslid, een purser, die misstapte in de reddingsboot, overboord viel en verdronk.

De Volendam bleef drijven en werd op sleeptouw genomen door HMS Salvonia (W 43) die het schip liet strandden bij Isle of Bute. Later werd de Volendam terug vlot getrokken en hersteld bij Cammell Laird Ltd. in Glasgow. Toen ze in het droogdok lag werd een tweede torpedo ontdekt in het boegruim die nog intact bleek te zijn maar niet ontploft was. De Duitse U-boot had een spreidschot gelanceerd met een korte tussenpauze tussen de twee torpedo's, waarvan de eerste wel tot ontploffing kwam en de tweede torpedo in hetzelfde 16 meter lange boeggat niet explodeerde. Het schip werd omgebouwd voor vervoer van troepen en keerde terug naar de konvooidienst in juli 1941. Tot juli 1945 had ze voornamelijk meer dan 100.000 militairen vervoerd.

In 1946 vervoerde de TSS Volendam Nederlandse troepen naar Nederlands-Indië en werd vervolgens terug aan haar eigenaar toegewezen, die haar inzette voor reizen van emigranten van Europa naar Australië. In 1947 werd de nieuw gestichte kolonie Volendam in Paraguay naar het schip vernoemd, door de emigranten die met het schip naar hun bestemming waren gebracht. Op 16 november van dat jaar ramde de Volendam de spoorbrug bij Alcantara over het Suezkanaal.

De TSS Volendam werd op 13 november 1951 opgelegd in Rotterdam. Op 3 februari 1952 werd het schip voor de sloop verkocht aan Frank Rijsdijk's Industriële onderneming te Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht.

In 2024 is het anderhalve eeuw geleden dat de Wet Houdende Maatregelen tot het Tegengaan van Overmatigen Arbeid en Verwaarlozing van Kinderen, beter bekend als het Kinderwetje van Van Houten werd aangenomen. Initiatiefnemer Samuel van Houten wilde een totaalverbod op kinderarbeid, maar de Tweede Kamer zwakte dat af. Weliswaar was het verboden om kinderen jonger dan twaalf jaar te laten werken, maar dat gold alleen voor tewerkstelling in fabrieken en voor nachtarbeid. Toch vormde de wet een kantelpunt in de sociale geschiedenis van Nederland.

Voor museum Panorama Mesdag vormt het lustrum van het Kinderwetje aanleiding om te kijken hoe het leven van kinderen er in de periode rond 1874 uitzag. Dat gebeurt door de ogen van Haagse School-schilders, die regelmatig kinderen opvoerden in hun schilderijen. Overigens was Sientje Mesdag-Van Houten, echtgenote van Hendrik Willem Mesdag en een van de kunstenaars die mee schilderden aan het beroemde panorama, de zus van Samuel van Houten.

Kunstenaars schilderden regelmatig hun eigen kinderen. Zo portretteerde Jozef Israëls zijn zeven jaar oude zoon Isaac. Het portret is geschilderd in weinig kleurnuances. Het lijkt of de jongen opdoemt uit de achtergrond. Dat is heel anders dan het werk van de, later ook schilder geworden, Isaac. Dat is juist kleurrijk en licht. Van hem hangt op deze tentoonstelling het werk Ezeltje rijden op het Scheveningse strand.

Johan Evert Akkeringa schilderde zijn zoon Evertje toen die een half jaar oud was. In zijn hand houdt het jongetje een kostbare zilveren rammelaar. Jacob Maris maakte een portret van zijn oudste dochter Henriëtte (3 jaar) met een parelsnoer om haar nek. Liesje Arntzenius was vier jaar oud toen haar vader Floris haar schilderde, met verf kliederend in zijn atelier. Liesje zou later zelf ook kunstenaar worden en vooral portretten en bloemstillevens schilderen. Anton Mauve legde zijn dochtertje Lize vast terwijl ze in de tuin een bloemetje bestudeert. Allemaal liefdevol vastgelegde kinderen, die zo te zien prettig en niet van luxe verstoken leefden.

Hoe anders is dat bij andere kinderen op deze tentoonstelling! Het meest schokkende werk is waarschijnlijk Foris Arntzenius’ Het lucifermeisje. Terwijl ze zich staande houdt met een paar krukken, probeert het meisje door het verkopen van lucifers wat geld te verdienen. Het verbeten gezicht van het meisje is uiterst veelzeggend.

Het weiden van vee werd vaak aan kinderen overgelaten. Mauve schilderde zo’n jonge koeherder. Het joch kan amper over de schoft van het dier heen kijken.

Willem Bastiaan Tholen werkte vaak in de veengebieden rond de Zuiderzee. Waarschijnlijk schilderde hij daar een jongen die zich vasthoudt aan de mast van een kleine schuit, mogelijk een punter waarop riet werd vervoerd. Het zeil wordt summier aangeduid en de achtergrond is leeg. Hierdoor richt alle aandacht zich op de boerenjongen.

Wally Moes is een mij tot nu toe onbekende schilderes. Zij schilderde Schaftuurtje, dat twee jonge mandenvlechters laat zien tijdens hun middagpauze. Hun verstelde kleren en vuile voeten krijgen van de kunstenares alle aandacht. Een merkwaardig detail vormt de sinaasappelschil die op de grond ligt. Een dergelijke luxe vrucht zal zeker geen deel hebben uitgemaakt van de lunch van deze jongens. Eveneens van de hand van Wally Moes is een fraaie ets van een voddenraper. Hij verzamelt oud textiel dat verwerkt zal worden tot papier of poetskatoen. Het vuil druipt van zijn hark.

Wat was de bedoeling van de kunstenaars die dit soort scènes vastlegden? Waarschijnlijk niet, zoals je zou denken, een aanklacht tegen sociale misstanden. Nee, dit soort armoedige taferelen werd ‘mooi’ gevonden. Bovendien verkochten zulke scènes goed en waren dus ook commercieel interessant. Frederik van Eeden schreef in 1888 over de vele schilders in Laren: “Hun schoonheidsgevoel werd het meest bevredigd door de armoedigste huisjes, de meest armelijk gekleede lieden. Ze vonden dat mooi en wezen het elkaar. De Laarder boeren hebben daardoor een eigenaardig beeld van schilders-mooi gekregen. ‘Mooi’- zeggen ze, ‘mooi – dat is vuil.’ En als de schilders komen weten ze het al en zoeken hun vuilste plunje uit.”

Torben Hendrik didn't actually intend to open the suitcase. He and his friends from the climate activists only collected the suitcases in order to throw them off a highway bridge in a joint action and thus block the access to the airport. But the strange signs on the suitcase make him curious. Are they Norse runes? Maybe something to do with Icelandic fairies or something. So he opens it. A stench of sweat hits him. And he is horrified. The first thing he recognizes are T-shirts with logos like the ones he knows from hooligans and neo-Nazis. He immediately closes the suitcase again. It really belongs on the highway.

On his way to the subway, Torben Hendrik passes a hairdresser. The long curls suddenly annoy him insanely. He takes a look inside the store. Although it's still very early, someone already seems to be there. Maybe this is his chance. The barber asks what he wants. Torben says never mind, the main thing is short. "Okay," answers the hairdresser and gets the long hair clippers. Not five minutes later, Torben sits there and looks in the mirror in horror. What devil has gotten into him? The barber doesn't care and soaps his skull. By the time he's finished shaving, Wotan has calmed down a bit. So at least you can see his "Oi Mate" written in gothic letters on the back of his neck again.

When the barber takes the cape away, you are ashamed of your silly clothes. Actually, you don't want to go out on the street like that anymore. What if your comrades see you like this? You ask the hairdresser if you can change somewhere here. You have your suitcase with you. When you come out of the back room, the store looks completely different. Grafitti and posters of boxing matches on the walls. Stickers from the Herta ultras on the mirrors.

The barber is a comrade. You would have now damn desire to ram the horny skinhead your cock in the ass. But you have no time for it today. He wears Domestos jeans like you. With white suspenders. And with white laces in the 20-hole DocMartens. Clearly also more your taste . But for what you and the comrades are up to today, combat boots are more suitable.
