is romeo and juliet your favorite shakespeare play and do you have hot takes to drop on us
It took top spot for a while when I was an angsty teenager…It’s not *quite* my go-to anymore (currently, that’s Twelfth Night) but it still holds a special place in my heart.
My supposedly hottest take about this play is that I see a lot of people on this app saying R&J isn’t a romance, and I think they’re being, shall we say…reductive.
Romeo and Juliet IS a tragedy. It’s about two star crossed lovers who fate itself conspires against because their families never would’ve let them be together. They make the choices they do because they’re emotional teenagers trapped in such dire circumstances. And I understand that teenagers’ emotions can be…melodramatic, but to completely dismiss it all as a matter of hormones and stress egging them on…well, when I was a teenager, the idea that all my thoughts and feelings were just overblown and frivolous was upsetting to me, to say the least. Certainly being heir to the world’s least emotionally intelligent lord didn’t help.
All is to say: I think R&J is also a romance. A genuine love between two people. I can make fun of Romeo for his choices while also understanding that love at first sight is a common trope that doesn’t have to be disregarded just because he and Juliet are both young, and that romance in fiction is often larger than life — so many people yearn for the the dramatic love confession, or even the catharsis of lovers dying for each other, their devotion and despair at being parted stronger than even the fear of their own mortality. R&J portrays love’s great desperation, and uses young characters to help the audience sympathize with their plight.
Also: fuck Paris lives (we hate to see a suitor whom the lady doesn’t care for) and fuck Tybalt lives (he reminds me of Kane). But I don’t think either of those takes are particularly hot.

oh god what do we call a world that simultaneously exists as two mirrored versions at once
#we figured out some confusion with sources#bc we'd get an introject that would say 'I'm [Guy A] from [World A]'#and then we would get Guy B who is actually just Guy A and also from World A but they're. separate people. with different memories#turns out there's two worlds that exist in the same place at the same time on top of and within each other#the thing that got this to click was the echoes because of course#bc in source: the echoes are fragments broken from a god's soul and the fragments got placed into bodies to grow and heal#until the fragments could reunite (which; fuck that we're not erasing ourselves for a father we never knew)#and the Percy fragment was placed into Maxwell's body and they coexisted for years#until Percy was separated from the human body and given their own leaving Maxwell on its own#and a lot of people we know on Paradox (where Percy is from) have copies on Voidworld (the two mirror worlds' old now less accurate name)#so we have Paradox Owen and Voidworks (aka Voidworld Owen) or Ro (paradox) and Lucas (void)#but then we found ANOTHER voidworld owen with a DIFFERENT BACKSTORY and a different home and everything#and we thought we solved that problem (oh yeah Helios made a paradox machine maybe that split Voidworks in two?)#but no the WORLD is split in two. because we already had a Void Percy (aka Ochre) and we know them well in sys#but just recently we found a Void Maxwell!#which- because of the fact that Maxwell and Percy shared a body for so many years there SHOULDN'T BE a separate Void Maxwell#in fact there shouldn't be a void percy AT ALL considering they're not FROM EARTH (these are all different versions of earth)#Ochre logically should be MAXWELL'S void version not Percy's#but Ochre is NOT Maxwell. Ochre is Percy.#We've found Nate#who seems to be Void Maxwell#specifically Maxwell#but like#WE HAVE THE SAME BIO FAMILY IN EVERY EARTH HOW IS THERE TWO OF THEM WHEN ONLY ONE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE BORN#and Nate and Ochre aren't like. twins or something. they aren't even RELATED. WHO IS NATE'S FAMILY?????????

Due to a sracp while working, my sun is crying blood just like the Helios bust do. I forgot how to be easy and well. No... make your face happy and be joyful. That not even yourself realize that you brought an sacrifice. If someone is slapping your left cheek, lend him your right one too. If he wants your coat, let him also your jacket. If someone forces you to walk one mile with him, walk two together. Thats the way we walk the path to our downfall.

sacred holiness
is nothing else than a night-time being well spent. the daytime is easy, the sun is out and everything is seen.
i also think it is nice to support a football team. just for the sake of doing it.
a human needs to invest in health. not necessarily kicking the ball.
destruction. growth. i am thinking of destroying a tree.
now i am a footballer.
enlightenment in movement. but how long does it take for the guy whose life is there? i think i am enjoying it.
thank you for flying.
o ball.

I WISH Jorge had referenced the part of Luck Runs Out where Odysseus tells Eurylochus to be quiet because I feel like that’s an element missing from a lot of Eurylochus interpretations.
“I need you to always be devout and comply with this /Or we'll all die in this” is important because Eurylochus fails to do it by questioning Odysseus’ words (the bag is NOT treasure, it’s storm) and opening the wind bag and his actions lead directly to the facilitation of the death of most of the crew. I hesitate to say he’s to blame because, well, Poseidon is taking revenge due to Odysseus’ decision, but Eurylochus handed him means and perfect opportunity to do it.
So, after that, Eurylochus obeys everything Odysseus says to do. He takes men to explore Circe’s island. He stays put instead of running when Odysseus goes to rescue him. He follows intl the Underworld despite the fact that “hey this witch is helping us now by sending us to death’s realm, this is definitely not a trick” probably raised some questions. He doesn’t (or at least we don’t see) stray or talk to the souls in the Underworld even though Odysseus ends up doing it. He traps and kills the sirens.
He lights and gives out six torches.
So, if devotion to Odysseus wasn’t enough to save them? If Odysseusnis now using that devotion and trust to get them killed as long as he gets to make it home to his wife? What is he meant to do now?
Eurylochus doesn’t sound… fully there, during the second half of Mutiny. Whether there was divine intervention pushing him or madness or simply the pain of it all, he’s not acting rationally. He just saw six of his trusted men brutally murdered, asks Odysseus to lie and say it was a trick, and can’t even kill him when the truth comes out. Odysseus’ wounds are bandaged! (I’m not sure that he doesn’t actually know where Helios’ statue is from btw, both due to the melody and bc it seems outrageous)
We’re all talking about Odysseus pleading for Eurylochus to stop before killing the cows, but Eurylochus is pleading too. He asks how much longer is he expected to suffer, to push through doubt, to follow the orders. And Odysseus’ first plea is “I need to get home” (later “we can get home”). Let’s not forget Odysseus is selfish and Eurylochus knows that, maybe even loves that, but he’s not just hungry, he’s tired.
When Polites gets the location of the sheep cave from the lotus eaters and takes the men to it, he leads several of them to death and himself to his doom. When Eurylochus stumbles upon the cows, does he remember that? Does he deliberately invoke it?
Killing the cows isn’t about the hunger, not really. It’s about the devotion that was asked of him, the price he paid to learn that lesson, and the pain that silence put him through anyway.

So, I know people are really desperate for Sandra Lynn to have hooked up with Pamela Dawn instead of Bobby Dawn, and I completely understand that!* Bobby Dawn is slimy and awful and we don't know much about Pamela, so maybe she's better? But it is 100% Bobby Dawn for two very clear reasons:
Sklonda literally said it was him
Bobby Dawn has always been a predator
The first thing we learn about Sandra Lynn's affair during Spring Break Sophomore Year was that she had just left Aguefort (she dropped out her senior year and got a diploma later on) and she was very young. She was asked to join an established adventuring party of people who were older than her and that had lost one of its members. She fell in love with another member of the party that was already in a relationship, they had an affair, and then when the affair was discovered, Sandra Lynn was blamed, kicked out of the party, and her name was smeared as far and wide as possible by the person who had taken advantage of her so that person could absolve themselves, likely in the eyes of their partner and the party.
So what we can immediately deduce from this is that Sandra Lynn was an outsider to her new adventuring party, likely looked down on as "just a kid", maybe disdained for being a dropout, and most definitely resented for taking the place of the (presumably) dead party member. She was in actively dangerous and stressful situations while questing with the party and she probably had little support from the group during that time.
Sandra Lynn was very very vulnerable.
When he met Sandra Lynn, Bobby Dawn would have been about 20 years younger than he is now, likely in his late 30s/early 40s.** Probably still handsome, still a "dashing" active adventurer. He was married to Pamela already (not just in an established relationship), since he had a child by then that was close to grown and I don't think the Church of Sol would be very happy about a child out of wedlock. He would have been a cleric of Sol and probably still preaching "the good word of Sol" but it likely wouldn't have been constant. You can't give sermons while fighting monsters. I'm sure he even saved Sandra Lynn's life a few times!
The thing about Bobby Dawn being a televangelist now, but not then, is that when he was young, he was probably just as good at persuasion, at finding vulnerable people and exploiting their weaknesses to get what he wanted, and yet he hadn't made a name for himself as a televangelist, so people wouldn't know to be wary of him trying to convert or manipulate them.
The scene between Bobby and Kristen, when Kristen is pretending that Cassandra died shows exactly what kind of terrible person Bobby really is. He is happy to find Kristen devastated, that she is having "a real dark night of the soul" and needs guidance. He refuses to help Kristen stay at Aguefort (something that's within his power), despite knowing how beneficial that would be to her well-being, because that goes against his own goals. He is smug and condescending and cruel. He is preying on Kristen's devastation and vulnerability (not knowing it's an act), to draw her back into the fold of the Church of Helio/Sol.
The person who did that to Kristen, is the exact same person who took advantage of Sandra Lynn when she was still basically a kid, just out of high school. He took advantage of her feelings for him, her inexperience and isolation. And then, when they were discovered, he threw her away and made her the villain so he could get away with it.
He ruined Sandra Lynn's life. Yes, she's happy now with her daughter, her partner, and the beautiful home they've made at Mordred Manor with Adaine, Kristen, Lydia, Ragh, Tracker, Zayn, Aelwyn, Boggy, and 15 cats. But Sandra Lynn ended up with self-esteem and relationship issues that she is still dealing with to this day. Those issues ruined her marriage, could have ruined her relationship with Jawbone, and likely played a hand in the difficulties between her and Fig in Freshman Year, as Sandra Lynn saw her daughter take her first steps into the world of adventuring.
Because Sandra Lynn first wanted to be an adventurer and Bobby Dawn took that away from her, just like he tried to do to Kristen.
Bobby Dawn has shaped his career as a high priest of Sol and as a televangelist by portraying himself as the epitome of righteousness. He is rotten to the core, a predator in a job where he is meant to help people, and I CANNOT WAIT to see the Bad Kids take him down.
*I don't really understand it. Pamela Dawn is likely just as bad as Bobby. She's the chief paladin of the church of Sol, her husband is a televangelist and a High Priest of Sol, and she would have been around the same age as Bobby and having an affair with a vulnerable young girl who she then kicked out of the group and slandered. It being Pamela would still be awful!
**Even with the assumption that both Bobby Dawn and his child had their kids at a young age, the math still has to take into account that Sandra Lynn's daughter is the same age as Bobby Dawn's GRANDSON.

Everybody gangsta until the power of friendship becomes a thing and takes your trident
___
Seriously, I have this vision of hundreds of ghost hands pushing the trident in Odysseus' hands to help him defeat Poseidon
Also, do you know how well this fits with my vision of Hades throughout Epic which I made a joke about earlier in the post????
Like:
Poseidon: you want to explain to me.... why, out of nowhere... six hundred souls have come to his aid...
Poseidon: SOULS YOU WERE TASKED WITH KEEPING HERE
Hades: *calmly hides a friendship band from Polites in a drawer*
Hades: it's not like they asked or something
Poseidon:
Hades:
Hades: besides, what was I supposed to do. say no?
Or
Hades: oh no, aren't these the consequences of your own actions? How could this happen?
Poseidon:
Poseidon: are you finished?
Hades: just a moment more
OR
Poseidon: we talked about letting three of them go to encourage him to give up
Hades:
Poseidon: not his whole army
Hades: you know, I thought they might resent him for the way he ended things with Helios' cattle
Hades, spreading his hands: I underestimated how much you can unite people with hatred against you

riz and adaine are the brain: obviously. but also because they have both at some point been ruled by their neuroses, they live in their heads, have been told their entire lives that the thing they are good for is their intelligence. it is what they can give to other people.
fabian and fig are the body: in completely different ways. fabian thought he knew his body when he was just fighting with it but it failed him. he had to learn to trust it again - to trust his instincts as well as what he’d been told his entire life. his instincts told him to dance, and he weaved that in with his fighting skills for both more complete control over his body and trust in it when he isn’t in control. this leads us into fig - instincts. she’s never completely felt fused to her own body the way most people do. it’s hers to with what she wants, including making it other people completely. those other people are still her though. she never sits with one thing, but moves fluidly wherever her instincts tell her to whether it makes sense or not. one of the coolest things a body can do is called the flexor / withdrawal reflex. when you touch a hot stove and pull back your hand before you’ve even registered the pain. the only time (that i know of) that your sensory receptors tell your muscles to move instead of relaying information to the brain and letting it decide. you literally have no choice whether or not you pull your hand back. your body decides for you. this is fig’s entire life. people often think the strongest, healthiest bodies are the biggest, sturdiest ones. yet often it’s the annoying bitches that do the most yoga, strength in flexibility. something fig (and now also) fabian have in spades.
kristen is the soul: seemingly inconsistent and ever changing, the only way kristen changes is cosmetically. she struggles so hard to find a god that makes sense for her because she’s not just finding her god. she’s finding a god for all the bad kids. because at the core of her, she is trying to do what is right, what is kind, what is best for everyone else. she wants to help people, save people. even if she doesn’t go about it the right way (ie immediately trying to convert everyone to helio on her first day) she is just trying to help. no matter what god she has, or who she’s faced with - that’s never changed. the soul is forever, and despite all aesthetics, so is kristen.
gorgug is the heart. because of course he is. “it’s gorgug keep going.” bum bum “it’s gorgug. keep. going.” he keeps them there, all together, all in sync when their differences threaten to overrule their similarities. he pulls them back in with the gravity axe he made for love of his parents and the culture that raised him. with the courage he had to stand up and declare he would in fact do the impossible. bum bum.
“it’s gorgug keep going.”
