Twitch Streamer Tommy, because apparently I still have thoughts on him being one of those dudes who's into Flight Simulator.

Buck mostly starts out watching the streams because Christopher watches streams. Buck and Eddie have had discussions with Chris about how much info he should be sharing with strangers on the internet, it was a whole thing. Chris can watch them without being monitored, neither of them are helicopter parents, but Buck does in general keep tabs on them. Because he's constantly reading shit about someone w/ fame on the internet taking advantage of it.

There's a variety to the ones that Chris watches, but all of of them are for games that he already plays. Except one. Some guy called REMOVEB4FLIGHT and it's straight up just Flight Simulator content. There's not a ton of consistency to when the guy streams, it's all over the place schedule wise. Maybe once or twice a month, and he's clearly not a Professional Streamer™ so much as a guy with a hobby. His set up is crazy though.

And sometimes Christopher watches them when Buck is in eyesight, and yeah. Buck won't lie. He's interested. He became legitimately invested when REMOVEB4FLIGHT sat down and simulated a flight from JFK International Airport to Singapore Changi Airport, and it was just under 19 hours.

Buck didn't watch the entire thing, don't be stupid. But he did watch the last 4 hours which... Shut up. It should have been boring, but there was enough going on between the chat and REMOVEB4FLIGHT that it wasn't.

And it was also cute. The guy was cute. He was already obviously tired by the time Buck and Christopher started watching, and as he got more tired he got gigglier and gigglier. Explaining that "No. No pilots will ever fly 19 hours straight, I'm just doing it because I thought it'd be a fun challenge and oh nooooo do I regret it. My only goal is to be coherent enough to not crash land this A350."

The plane does not crash land and at the end, REMOVEB4FLIGHT runs his hands through his curly hair, laughs in exhaustion, and says "Great, I'm gonna go sleep for 12 hours because I've got a shift in 14. BYE."

And Buck keeps watching after that, when he can. There's something calming about it, in a weird way. It's both is and isn't ASMR. Any ASMR is absolutely on accident, but the guy has a really nice set up, a really nice mic. And a really nice voice. And a really nice face. He explains in detail what he's doing and why, like he's giving a casual lesson on How To Fly.

Buck learns that the his name is Tommy, and he is actually a pilot but he flies helicopters and that's "-the only other information you need about my day job."

Not all of Tommy's streams are 19 hours, though they're still long. A lot of them are him being like "What's the weirdest place I can land this thing?" or messing around in multiplayer. Maybe something where he tries to recreate relatively famous crash landings, like one day he goes "We're Gimli Gliding it today" and he does crash pretty badly the first time, but he gets it on the second.

It becomes a thing Buck and Christopher talk about, because they both keep up with it. Chris starts pestering Eddie to get him a joystick and pedals to play Flight Simulator, but those aren't exactly cheap so Eddie promises it for xmas. Buck is already stewing over how to potentially adjust settings and shit to make sure that the inclusion of foot pedals isn't an issue for Chris, etc etc.

Sometimes when Buck is part of the Chat Conglomerate Tommy comments on something he's said. It makes him giddy. It's difficult to describe. He just likes this guy. This guy's cool. Buck's getting attention from someone on the internet, sue him. He likes it.

And then the drama with the cruise ship. Buck doesn't think anything of it when Chimney reaches out to an old friend named Tommy, because why would he? It's a common enough name. But then Buck walks into Harbor Station and comes face to face with REMOVEB4FLIGHT and oh. Oh shit.

I'm sorry, I can't take any of you seriously. A CHILD managed to stabilize a literal commercial flight and save a bunch of people because of his special interest and his VR headset where he probably flies those things on a simulator and thinks about being a pilot when he grows up and you are calling the episode boring because the solution to the problem wasn't a guy who flies helicopters for a living? A CHILD IS GONNA LAND THE PLANE. A CHILD. This is incredible. This is the shark on the freeway show. Buck saved the day last episode with perfume and bee facts. Of course they were not gonna do the "oh there's a trained pilot in place" route. That's unimaginative. Jem is saving the day and it's beautiful.

I don't know how to tell you this Shinichi, but I don't think playing flight simulation will give you the real experience of an actual helicopter

The part of this home that was decorated by a professional designer is dull as dishwater, but part that was done by the owner is amazing and it all comes with the house. 2022 build in Kissimmee, FL, has 10bds, 11ba, $2.2M + $535mo. HOA.

The designer did all the white with splashes of neutrals.

Triple wide dining table.

The house is new, so it came with the kitchen. I like the counters and big island.

She also did a home theater.

I don't know which bedroom is the primary b/c they're all the same size, not very big, and each has an en-suite.

And, now we progress to the owner's vision. Check this out. He is a collector of military/war history collectables, but this stuff is prime. Look at that car.

Believe it or not, this helicopter that served in Afghanistan & Iraq, is worth $25M alone! So, the house is a bargain.

Inside, it's been converted to a gaming flight simulator w/bunk beds.

The realty description suggests that it can be rented out, and it could, but that's up to the new owner. This stuff if pretty expensive.

This biplane's wings were made into beds. I guess the propellor was removed for safety reasons.

This is a cute touch- clear birds hanging from the ceiling.

This table is made from a plane wing and he's got a framed uniform, plus other artifacts, on the walls.

There's a pool in the back yard.

HOW TO BECOME A FIGHTER PILOT

So as you may or may not know, I am writing a fanfic. Unfortunately for me, I can never do things half way, and because aviation is my passion I must do hours of research on a particular subject that I probably won't even use or reference in said fanfic. Here is a guide for how our favorite characters (probably) became fighter pilots. If there are inaccuracies let me know, I want to know :)

United States Naval Academy

The USNA is an undergraduate college that is a combination of academics and military development programs. Students who want to go into Flight School could qualify with one of a variety of different majors, but there are particular majors that obviously may provide a bit of an advantage to aspiring pilots. The USNA currently offers a variety of different majors and minors, though there are fewer than you might expect from a typical university, and overall the degrees are more tailored towards the Navy. They encourage participation in athletics in the form of a Varsity or club/intramural sport(1). 

NOTE: Maverick likely attended a regular college and was a part of the Naval ROTC program at that school. He would have gotten his degree in a field relevant to aviation, likely Mechanical Engineering given his mechanical aptitude seen in Top Gun Maverick, and then attended the 13-week program called Officer Candidate School. To be honest, Maverick’s path within the Navy is a mess and impossible to follow but in the most straightforward scenario, he would go to flight school following Officer Candidate School.

Flight School 

Flight School is an approximately 2-year-long program that is required for Naval Aviators to earn their wings. Primarily located at the “Cradle of Naval Aviation” aka Pensacola, FL, flight school consists of many different phases that will divide students into different specializations. 

1. Naval Introductory Flight Evaluation (NIFE)

Divided into four phases, NIFE is a program that evaluates students’ aeronautical aptitude as well as screens them to ensure they’re capable of becoming aviators. Students may earn a “pink sheet” for any score below 80% or a failure of a task, requiring them to stand before a panel of instructors to explain why they failed and how they plan to improve. Too many pink sheets result in removal from the program(2).

1a. Water Survival Training Following medical clearance, students are taught and tested on their ability to swim while wearing flight gear as well as formerly instructed on various survival techniques and CPR(2).

1b. Academics  A 3-week phase where students take classes and exams in five subjects. It is condensed to test a student’s ability to retain information, learn new information in a high-stress environment, and challenge their self-discipline in regard to time management and other areas(2).

1c. Introductory Flight Screening (IFS) Students are entered into a 2-week-long modified civilian flight training program where one week is dedicated to ground school courses before they must conduct a series of flights in a Cessna using Navy flight procedures during the second week. Students had to memorize and prioritize information to complete the flights, specifically in regard to conducting pre-flight briefings and emergency procedures. Overall, they’ll conduct seven flights in which they are required to complete a set of standardized maneuvers(2). 

1d. Aviation Physiology A week-long training course that consists of emergency-specific training evolutions such as the hypoxia chamber, emergency first aid, and the “helo dunker.” The “helo dunker” (from what I understand) is a particular training device that consists of strapping a pilot into a cockpit-like or helicopter contraption within a pool and submerging the entire structure under the water, simulating an environment in which their aircraft has landed in the water and they need to escape from the seat(3). An image of this can be seen below(2).

The Top Gun cast had to undergo a similar training course in order to be allowed to fly in military airplanes for filming. A video of some of their training can be viewed below.

2b. Aviation Pre-Flight Indoctrination

A 6-week long program that marks the beginning of the aviation pipeline. Located in Pensacola, FL, students attend classes covering the basics of aerodynamics, weather in relation to aviation, air navigation, flight rules and regulations, and aircraft engines and systems (3). 

Prior to API, those interested in becoming Radar Intercept Officers (RIO) will have expressed their interest and requested a designation as a Naval Flight Officer (NFO). 

2c. Primary Flight Training

A 6-month-long program that teaches the students the basics of flying. There are two locations for Primary, one at Training Air Wing 5 at Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Pensacola, FL, or Training Air Wing 4 at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi in Corpus Christi, TX. Both Naval Air Stations (NAS) are taught the same curriculum and fly the same aircraft, the T-6 Texan II. The students learn about the instruments, flight basics, radio instrument navigation, formation flying, and aerobatics, and also conduct several solo flights. At the end of Primary, students choose which pipeline they would like. This is conducted depending on the needs of the Navy and how many spots are available(3). 

Obviously, Iceman, Slider, Goose, Cougar, and everyone else got Jets, though they may not have gone through flight school at the same time. 

2d. Intermediate Flight Training

Intermediate Flight Training is a 27-week program. Split into five platforms; Jet, E2/C2, Helicopter, Maritime, and E-6 TACAMO. The jet platform flight training focuses more on navigation, air traffic control, individual skills, and cooperative skills of flying jets. The intermediate flight training program for jets is located at Meridian, MS (Training Air Wing One) at either VT-7 or VT-9, and Kingsville, TX (Training Air Wing Two) at either VT-21 or VT-22, both of which teach the same curriculum. Students in the jet platform will complete 58 graded flights in the T-45C Goshawk jet trainer aircraft(3). 

2e. Advanced Flight Training

Similar to Intermediate Flight Training, the program is split into five platforms but lasts 23 weeks. The students will probably have stayed with the same training squadron throughout the intermediate and advanced flight training. This stage includes learning skills specific to the chosen platform. The Advanced Flight Training program for jets is what’s called the Strike Syllabus. The Strike Syllabus includes an additional 67 graded flights in the T-45 covering air combat maneuvers, low-level navigation, tactical formation flying, and aircraft carrier qualifications. Students will then graduate from Advanced Flight Training with the Wings of Gold(3). 

3. Squadron Selection 

The final selection process assigns naval aviators to a particular squadron based on the needs of the service. Naval Aviators are assigned to a fleet replacement squadron or other similar training assignments for further training on their specific aircraft type. Here, RIOs and pilots must become qualified by gaining the required flight hours and meeting the proficiency standards necessary.

NOTE: It’s kind of hard to figure out when exactly the RIO training occurs. I know it takes place over the course of all the primary through advanced training occurs as well but I’m not sure if they have to attend seperate courses for it. 

TOPGUN

From there, pilots and RIOs may have been moved to their first official squadron for deployment. They would have been in their first squadron for approximately one and a half years, deploying with them. Their squadron would come back from a deployment and during the stand-down time before their next deployment, their commanding officer would select them to go to TOPGUN.

A helicopter is hovering near the trees. A huge spacecraft looming on the horizon Modern tech combined with industrial design that NASA could never afford The craft's nose is pointed straight up, ready for launch The workers in jumpsuits are scattered around the two-hundred-foot tall scaffolding, performing the routine checks.

Y/N stares up at the craft and looks back at Ben and Richard shaking her head "Nope not doing this not doing this at all" and turns back from the spacecraft. "Ben you take it"

"Y/N" Reed tries to stop her.

"Final decision" Leaving no argument over there

Ben makes a face "Why can't you do it? Y/N and well even I cannot do it."

Before Y/N could speak Reed beats her to it"External SRBs, orbital system engines. It's just like the shuttles you flew in- Y/N it was fun remember"

"Nope Reed"

"Same here I cannot take orders from that underwear model. The wingnut washed out of NASA for sneaking two Victoria's Secret wannabes into a flight simulator" Ben angrily answers him

"Then think about me, Ben" She whines, not interested in meeting the only person she hates.

"Youthful high spirits."

The three of them walk toward the base of the scaffolding. "They crashed it into the wall. A flight simulator"

"I am sure he's matured since then. "

"Well, I hope he is mature," she says, keeping a stoic face. But my guts says he ain't." From far away, she sees a man leaning over to kiss a hothead, only to reveal it's Johnny Storm riding his motorcycle, and the woman driving a red Corvette. Y/N rolls her eyes, knowing this man still hasn't changed. She glances at Reed and Ben, and hands them the binoculars, "I ain't gonna handle the spaceship but I will help you Ben" Saying this she walks away.

"Yep she is still angry with him" Reed mutters and glances at Ben that Y/N  "Well have I asked you to do something you absolutely said you could not do?"

"Five times."

"I had it at four"

"This makes five"

Y/N was on a call with Matthew asking her about the progress of the mission "Yeah we are nearly set" Reed and Ben were unpacking gear into lockers when suddenly

"Captain on the bridge"

Ben goes to attention on reflex Johnny snaps a picture with a digital camera and then advances as Ben realizes who it is. Y/N gives an irritated look when Jonny turns the camera toward her to take a quick shot: "Digital camera $254. Memory stick $59. The look on your hard-ass former CO's grill when he finds out he's your junior officer: priceless. The same goes for the best friend Say hi to the BF" and takes his seat.

"Yeah he sends his regard," Y/N says giving him a tight-lipped smile "I will talk to you later babe Luv ya" and hangs up the phone

Ben eyeballs Johnny and suddenly reaches up as if to grab him He flinches But Ben reaches for Johnny's zipper and adjusts his uniform "Thank you. That's so sweet"

"I can handle the ship" Johnny's eyes furrow glancing at Y/N meeting her eyes who turns away " I can even handle Mr. Blonde Ambition. But I don't know if I should be flying or playing Vegas in these suits." Ben says while removing the hanging dress and showing it to Reed Johnny and Y/N "Who the hell came with them?"

"Victor did." Sue enters, wearing her blue, wetsuit-like uniform, carrying a stack of flight suits. "The synthetics act as a second skin adapting to your body's individual needs to--"

"See, now that means it keeps the hot stuff hot and cool stuff cool" Johnny continues Sue's words.

Reed stares at Sue "Wow fantastic" he takes the suit from Ben "Material made from self-regulating unstable molecules" he turns enthusiastically to Johnny Y/N and Ben "I've been working on the formula for this" Y/N and Johnny glance at each other amused by hearing his work while Sue and Ben looked annoyed at him

"Great minds think alike" Sue mutters sarcastically and starts handing the suit "Here you go, Ben"

"Thanks, Sweetie"

"Here's your Y/N"

"Thanks" Sue then walks up to Reed and throws the Suit at him 

"This is so weird"Y/N mutters watching the interaction from far away "One is acting too dumb and the other makes it wanna see"

"Tough life."

Y/N flinches at hearing the voice and glances at Johnny beside her. She scoffs and walks in the same direction Sue goes: "Hey, wait!" Johnny calls out following her "What no hi how are you Jon Jon or something like that"

"No Mr Storm"

"Mr Storm?" Johnny asks raising his eyebrows "When did we go into the professional way?"

"Since you broke my trust" Y/N abruptly turns Jonny almost colliding with her his smile falls off "Now we have some work to do Mr. Storm so shall we proceed" he gives her a nod and follows her to the spaceship

Victor and Sue lead others inside the space station into the command center.

"ETA until cosmic events nine hours" Victor announces walking ahead of all of them

Johhny makes his dad voice "If you behave maybe next time daddy will let you drive" he says keeping hands on Y/N's shoulder who glares at him and ducks down to walk beside him

"Keep talking there won't be next time," Ben mutters Y/N snickers keeping a hand on her mouth.

Reed focuses on Earth Sue, who is coming behind him. "It's a Long way from the projection booth at the Hayden Planetarium, isn't it?" Reed turns towards her, a  little stunned that she would bring that up.

"Yes yes, it is."

Johhny Y/N and Ben exchange a look "The earth looks beautiful from far."

"And that's why you loved astronomy"

A small smile graced Y/N's lip and she glanced at Johnny he was still the same Jon Jon but after what he had done she turned away following Sue.

"Trouble in paradise Trouble in friendship" Ben hummed leaving Johnny alone

"We can monitor the cloud's approach and observe the tests from here," Sue says when the enter command center

"Is it safe?"Y/N asks her concern over her face

"The shields on the station should protect us" Reed replied Y/N furrowed her eyebrows

"Should?" Ben questions 

"What's matter Ben? Getting paranoid in your old age?"

"It was a genuine question Victor" Y/N answers Victor smiles coldly at her Johnny steps forward shielding from her any comments he would spew

Ben turns to Victor making the environment tense Reed cuts in

"Let's start loading  those samples Get your suit ready, Ben."

Victor keeps his eyes on Ben "So I still see you're doing all the heavy lifting?" he then turns to Reed "Maybe you should have stayed in the lab fieldwork never suited you and you" Turning to Y/N "Had lost the opportunity."

"I don't need it your welcome"

Reed doesn't defend himself Ben steps forward "He does the talking I do the walking Got it?" Victor holds tight to his smile He nods "Got it take a walk, Ben... Actually, if you'll all excuse me I need to borrow Susan for a moment"

"Sure"

Y/N sighs and walks away to the airlock ahead of Johnny and Ben.

Ben preps for the spacewalk Y/N closing the back rear of his suit "Please tell me your guy's not trying to rekindle things with my sister again"Johnny questions while checking Ben's suit

"Of course, it's strictly business," Ben tells him

"Yesh, well, his eyes says differently don't they?" Johnny answers him where as Y/N is setting the coordinates on Ben's suit.

"Hey, two hearts got busted last time." his voice came muffled through the glass "Maybe she's not over it either."

"Wow Dr. Phillips that's deep" Y/N rolls her eyes hearing Johnny's sarcastic answer

"Johnny"

"Let's hear about that you got Victor more money than God stud of the year" he turns around bringing a set of clear sample boxes of the cart each containing a variety of plants "And you got Reed, world's dumbest smart guy worth less than a postage stamp. That's a little toss-up."

"Don't trouble your tiny little mind."

"Don't wander off now, boy"

Y/N says "All the best Stay safe," she hugs Ben.

"Don't worry I will be perfectly fine"

Johnny and Y/N step out of the airlock Y/N goes to the control panel to shut the door Securing airlock chamber They look through a small window Johnny gives him a salute to see Ben giving a thumbs up and he returns it. The airlock door opens revealing the space and he steps into it gracefully

Y/N sees Ben walking on the threshold on his way to the equipment from the small window. "So how are you?"

"Good" 

Johnny nods at her, keeping her tight-lipped. "How is Matty?" He hopes these small conversations can help her talk.

"Good" still keeping an eye on Ben

"Won't you ask me how I am doing?"

She turns to look at him "No"

Jonny is shocked by her answer "All this because of what happened 8 years back"

Y/N takes a deep breath "Yes a person who was a great friend to me broke my trust and started ignoring me and that was you, Johnny"

"I didn't mean to do that"

She laughs sarcastically "Yeah then why didn't you defend me then why did ignore me?"Johnny stays quiet for a moment "You started going with those hot chicks who flaunted your money and your best friend who was with you all the time needed you" see walks to the control panel

"Look-" Before Johhny could say anything they heard Reed's urgent voice

"Ben, need to get inside now!"

"What's going on?"

I ain't done arranging your flowers yet, egghead.

Reed stood near the sliding doors "Ben turn around" Both Y/N and Johnny saw a huge solar storm heading towards them

Guys I am not gonna make it

"Ben you gotta jump It's the only way" Johnny speaks through the comm and Ben makes a jump

"Come on Ben come on" Y/N mutters

"Come on Ben you got this" Johnny yells when the solar storm is near to Ben. The entire corridor rumbles Light flickers and sparks as the watch helplessly

"Okay, Johnny, get ready to close the portal."

i was walking in bridgehead trying to get to the plane room as quickly as possible, ardmore needed something fixed ASAP.
