Writing Notes: Mushrooms

The edible parts of fungi are the fruiting bodies that are produced very dramatically by huge spreading masses of mycelia, which draw their nutrients as parasites from roots and decaying vegetation.

BAY BOLETUS (Boletus badius)

Usually found in woodlands, this fungus is pale to brown in colour.

Has light yellow pores on the underside and these stain blue if damaged.

The flesh also stains a bluish colour when cut and smells very mushroomy.

The stalk has no frills but is smooth from base to cap.

Can be stored by slicing and drying or flash freezing.

They taste fine raw when sliced and make great soup.

SHAGGY INK CAP (Coprinus comatus)

Very common but distinctive mushroom.

Easy to identify with its egg-shaped shaggy cap.

Often grows on newly disturbed ground in large clusters.

The cap is covered with beautiful white scales and there is no veil on the stem when the cap opens to a bell shape with a dark black underside.

Need to be young and fresh to make good eating.

Shaggy ink caps make a wonderful mushroom soup.

These mushrooms do not store well, so they are best used fresh.

GIANT PUFFBALL (Langermannia gigantea)

Can grow to 80 cm diameter.

The huge white ball of a giant puffball is not hard to identify.

Must be used young before the spores have time to develop and the insects have time to take their share.

Slice them up like rump steak to cook them.

By themselves they have little flavour, but fried quickly with a little bacon they are delicious.

HORSE MUSHROOM (Agaricus arvensis)

Can be found on old pastures that has been grazed by horses or cattle.

Has a slight aniseed smell and does not shrivel up when cooked.

Just beware you don’t over-indulge if you are lucky enough in these times of chemical farming to find a crop of these.

The cap of the horse mushroom may be yellowy in colour, but be careful not to confuse it with the “yellow stainer” fungus, which will make you ill.

CHANTERELLE (Cantharellus cibarius)

May be found in woodland clearings.

Seasoned mushroom hunters will keep their locations a close secret as they tend to grow in the same places each year.

Are fairly small – up to 4 inches (10 cm) across but usually smaller – with a distinctive yellow colour and a slight smell of apricots.

The caps become like small, fluted trumpets as they age and the gills are heavy, irregular and run down the stems.

Best stored in good olive oil or in spiced alcohol.

PARASOL (Macrolepiota procera)

Usually found in open fields and has large brown scales in a symmetrical pattern around a pronounced central bump.

The cap can grow up to 10 inches (25 cm) across and the gills are white.

The stem is long and tough with a large ring around it.

Will dry well for storage.

Make a delicious dish by dipping pieces of the parasol in batter and deep frying.

PENNY BUN (Boletus edulis)

Also known as the “cep” mushroom and is a great prize for the mushroom hunter, as it has an unusual nutty flavour.

Found in woodland or sometimes in heather with dwarf willows, the “cep” can grow quite large – over 2 pounds (1 kg) in weight.

When picking, cut the cap in half to check for maggots. These work their way up through the stems.

Its cap looks just like freshly baked bread.

The colour darkens as the mushroom ages.

The underside will have yellow pores, not gills.

The stem is bulbous and solid white with brown stripey flecks.

Stores well if dried in thin slices.

HONEY FUNGUS (Armillaria mellea)

This yellowy-brown fungus is a tree-killer – but highly edible for humans.

The active part of the fungus is a black cord-like rhizomorph that covers huge areas under the soil and seeks out trees, which it destroys.

Normally grows straight out from trees and stumps, usually in large clumps.

The flesh is white and smells strong and sweet.

The gills vary from off-white to brown and the stalks are tough, often fused together at the base and with a white, cotton-like ring below the cap.

The caps become tough if you dry them so it’s best to freeze.

ORANGE PEEL (Aleuria aurantia)

An extraordinary, brightly coloured and very striking fungus.

Found commonly in large clumps in grassland on bare earth from autumn to early winter. The caps soon become wavy and are of fairly robust texture.

Quite small – up to 2 inches (5 cm) across – the fungus is bright orange on top and a lighter shade on the velvety underside.

These store well if dried.

WOOD MUSHROOM (Agaricus silvicola)

Only found in woodland.

A more delicate version of its close relative, the horse mushroom.

Does not grow out of a volval bag like the death cap and its gills are pink to brown in colour, not white.

The flesh does not discolour when cut and the smell is of a slight aniseed.

The cap is a creamy-yellow colour that darkens as it ages and is smaller than the horse mushroom, growing to only 4 inches (10 cm).

THE PRINCE (Agaricus augustus)

Resembles a stocky version of the parasol.

Grows up to 10 inches (25 cm) wide and is found in woodland.

The top is flecked with brownish scales.

The gills are off-white when young, turning dark brown with age.

The flesh is strong white and smells of mushroom.

The stem is very strong and often scaly with a large floppy ring under the cap – it is too tough to make good eating unless cooked in stews.

It has a strong flavour and can be frozen or dried for excellent winter meals.

FIELD MUSHROOM (Agaricus campestris)

Undoubtedly the best known of all mushrooms, before the days of chemical farming whole fields would be covered by the prolific field mushroom.

Get up early after a hot summer spell has been followed by rain to pick.

The silky white caps grow up to 4–5 inches (10–12 cm), the gills are pink, and the smell mushroomy.

The ring around the stems is very fragile and often missing.

Maggots can be a problem – check older specimens by cutting through the stems.

Can be stored by flash freezing or drying.

WHERE TO LOOK

You will always harvest your best specimens early in the morning. Fungi grow in a wide variety of places, but they will not tolerate chemical fertilizers or sprays.

They say it will take 20 years for the horse mushroom to appear in grassland after the use of chemicals has been stopped.

In fact, the majority of edible fungi grow in the proximity of woodland and many have close symbiotic relationships with particular tree roots.

But wild grassland does always produce an excellent crop of fungi every autumn and you will find each season’s crop in similar places to the previous year’s.

WHAT TO AVOID

There is probably no need to warn you of the fly agaric, as this bright red and white spotted fungus is so well known.

The most dangerous of all fungi is the death cap (Amanita phalloides).

A single death cap contains enough toxins to kill several people:

Usually it grows in woodland, particularly with oak trees. It can vary in colour, being similar in size to a field mushroom, but its characteristic features are white gills on the underside and a “volval” bag at the base. Any fungi growing from a “volval” bag are best left well alone for many are poisonous.

A death cap has white spores, not brown like most edible mushrooms.

Another mushroom to avoid is the “yellow stainer”, easily confused with field or horse mushrooms:

It has the distinctive feature of turning bright yellow when bruised or cut. It also smells rather like disinfectant.

NOTE. There is no easy way to determine whether a fungus is toxic just by looking at it. You should never ingest any unknown fungi. Fungal fruiting bodies can be picked out of the planter pot and thrown in the trash if there is a concern that pets or young children could ingest them.

Even leaving aside the rest of that ask about Karen, how are the show runners "glazing Cara" according to st twitter now lmao. I swear no one on there understands the concept of just liking the people you work with...

very good point. tbh 'glazing' really lost it's meaning. that's just the thing you say now about characters showing up in the show or marketing that you don't care about that much

but looking at how fandom treats certain characters it is kind of apparent how Karen isn't really seen as big of a deal as the show actually makes her in general. (at last in hyper invested fandom spaces. more regular viewers see her as much more of a main character) which i think causes a bit of dissonance when the show keeps promoting her. because if you think she's as unimportant of a side character as say, Dustin's mom, then you probably would think her constantly showing up on posters and bts footage is undeserved glazing

the thing is that Karen is actually kind of important. she's absolutely not a background character

you have the primary mains like Joyce, Hopper, the kids. more secondary mains that don't really have the hard hitting plot points of the show happen to them but are fleshed out and who the writers still take care writing like Steve, Robin etc. and then Karen falls in somewhere between a secondary and tertiary protagonist

she actually gets things to do each season. she has character arcs. from actually meeting and being suspicious of Brenner in s1, to her worry about Nancy in s3, the Billy situation, even s4 ends with her and Holly at the window looking out at the spores

actual side characters in the show, like Ted, the Sinclairs, Claudia Henderson, don't have any arcs to their characters. they're background decorum when their children (the actual protagonists) are home or need to talk to someone

but Karen falls much closer to actual protagonist status. which also explains why she's consistently featured in the marketing alongside the other mains

which is how the Byers and Wheelers turned into the two big families the show kind of revolves around to begin with. we know the most about them because almost all family members are protagonists in their own right. you have the kids Mike and Will, Nancy and Jonathan. and then the moms. the only difference being that Karen is kept in the dark about the UD plot and Joyce got thrown directly into it in s1 because it was her son that went missing

and the thing that people seem to get stuck on about Karen is that she's the only protag that doesn't explicitly know about the UD

which, honestly, makes her kind of interesting. especially with where they'll take that in s5, because she'll have to be confronted with what's been going on eventually. and what has been tormenting both her children for years. hell, she had such a close encounter with Billy in s3, she would have been in Heather's place that season hadn't Billy still had some semblance of control at that point. and she isn't even aware

Karen has been involved in the UD plot for seasons, there just wasn't any payoff to it yet because she doesn't know

Karen Wheeler, tight rope walker when it comes to getting as close as humanly possible to the supernatural plot without having to actually confront it

but it really boils down to, Karen is, and always has been an important character and the marketing has always reflected that

side note but what i've also seen cause a lot of the 'they're just needlessly glazing xyz' complaints is that sometimes it's just people being pissy their favourite characters aren't getting a singular spotlight on them. i've mainly seen it from solo El or Will stans (still exist in the year of the lord 2024) who don't care about the rest of the cast or plot outside of one character. so when Karen who, 'doesn't even know about the UD' gets so much s5 marketing that's hype that could have gone to someone more important in their minds. again, glazing entering the pantheon of words that lost all meaning on social media

Doll restoration: Shadow High’s Heather Grayson

Didn’t realize until after I finished that I never took before pictures x_x. She came with the first lot of dolls I got, and was missing all but one single shoe of hers.

Unlike most of the dolls I’ve gotten, which had disastrous hair but face and body in pretty good condition, she was the opposite. Her body was really dirty. I had to wash her twice to clean off all the grime and grease buildup—the second time with stronger soap than usual. There were several weird smudges on her face that I went at with acetone when they didn’t come off on the first wash (very carefully so as not to accidentally remove her makeup), which thankfully worked even though Is still can’t think what might have cause them.

She also had what appeared to be mold on the back of her arm which I dealt with by scrubbing it clean and then wrapping it in an alcohol soaked paper towel for several hours to kill any germs or spores left over. Unfortunately, it was too late to prevent it staining the plastic.

Contrary to all that, her hair was in good shape. There’s some very slight discoloration on the underside of the white half, which I thought about doing an oxy-clean wash for, but frankly it didn’t seem worth it. You can only see it if you’ve got good light and you’re really looking for it. It combed out easily, and I washed and conditioned it and let it dry.

Now even though it didn’t take me an hour to comb out the tangles, that’s not to say her hair didn’t pose any problems. See, the thing is, her original hairstyle had been taken out and her hair was down, meaning I had to part it down the middle by color. And to make matters more difficult, rather than a single rooted part, she had a rooted line of black hair on the white half, and a rooted line of white on the black half, and I had to criss-cross basically one plug at a time, alternating to get it back to the way it was originally.

It took me about 5 hours over three days to do a two and a half inch part and I was separating strands individually way more than I would have liked. And that wasn’t even the end of it because once I got to the front, she had this huge clump of gray hair right on the crown of her head that wasn’t in any of the pictures I could find of the doll anywhere, so I wasn’t sure what to do about it. In the end, i just parted about ¾ of an inch in the front without regard for colors because how the heck else was I gonna deal with gray hairs. To make it look more intentional, I also pulled a small section in the back and reverse parted it so there was a streak behind her head.

Once her hair was fully parted, I could finally tie it up in her original pigtails, and that was when another problem presented itself: the bangs. They did not want to stay separated, and they really did not want to lay flat against her face. So what I did was pull them back and tie them together behind her neck with a hair-tie so they laid against her face like they were supposed to, then I rubbed some pomade on the hair over her face and especially right at her scalp, and left it for a few hours to set. When I took the hair-tie out, her bangs sit properly. There was a slight kink in her bangs where the hair-tie held them behind her neck, which you can see in the first pic, but it has since eased itself out with time and gravity.

Although I didn’t have her shoes, I did have most of her clothes, so I put her in her secondary dress and her awesome jacket, which has extra straps inside so she can wear it just over her shoulders and not on her arms, which I thought was pretty neat. I put her in Mila Berrymore’s thigh high embroidered boots because I thought it was a cool look with the minidress, and accessorized with a blind box purse and one of Carmen Major’s fishnet gloves to complete the look.

Jack is my favorite character, I think he's really underappreciated, so here's a section in my about me dedicated to him and why I like him. I related to Jack heavily, I see a lot of my traits reflected in him and find comfort seeing a character similar to me. A central part to what makes a character likeable is seeing emotional similarities in them, allowing for catharsis in the viewer. I find these similarities in Jack. He's a good place for me to place my more irrational thoughts, into a little contained pod of a character. I've been focused on Jack since about February 2022. In this time I've watched Statistical Probabilities and Chrysalis over 100 times combined, read nearly every fanfiction involving the members of the Jack Pack, and read every official novel/short story containing them with the exception of the Typhon Pact books past the first and the Section 31 novels. I've also photo-scanned the pages of the DS9 Companion and the DS9 Technical handbook pertaining to the Jack Pack. My sketchbook is full of portrait art of Jack. My inner voice sounds like Jack most of the time. Not only do I find emotional catharsis (also the name of a song I heavily associate with Jack btw) in Jack, I also find him a motivating character for me. Whenever I feel like not doing work or self-improvement, I think about Jack and I find a new eagerness to power through whatever I might be hung up on. I also find a sense of confidence from him. Since I view genetic engineering (in the episode of Statistical Probabilities and Chrysalis at the very least) as an allegory for autism, when Jack talks about finding pride in his genetic identity I can draw a sort of pride in my autism from that as well. Jack isn't just a charaxcter to me but a part of my soul. Okay

also about the innate powers thing: I've been saying it for ages but there' something SO weird about the people that see El in the void

the list is literally:

Henry x3 (as Demogorgon-hivemind, flayed Billy, flayed Heather), Terry x2, Will x1, potentially Kali x1 (but her turning around to El is ambiguous since she was still a mysterious character so you can question whether she saw El)... and Mike... x?

not only does Mike look Weird on this list, he's even implied to have have seen El in there more than once as well since he talks abut "still seeing her" in terms of a regular thing + neither him or El are spooked when he suddenly just Looks at her out of nowhere

++ it should actually be even More startling to them, but especially El, since he's also the first person we ever see notice El in the void without her making contact first like with the Demogorgon or Will in s1. he literally just stops and directly looks at her before going "El?". and she didn't just Not get to touch him, she also doesn't even say anything to get his attention. he really just suddenly realized that she was there. like. it's weird

especially with the list then going on only to have every other person to get on it after him have powers (counting Will and his UD connection here bc Something supernatural with him is basically already confirmed to happen)

it's literally just El's weird mentor/older brother/pls pls pls not dad figure, El's mom, El's sister, El's future step?brother... and Mike

WHAT IS HE DOING ON THIS LINE UP???

he's the odd one out no matter how you spin it (both by family relation and psychic ability)

and it's not even like they retconned this later on, in s3 El and Max go out of their way to directly talk about Mike having "sensed her in there [the void] before" specifically after Billy (Henry) just did the same thing and they were confused by it

honestly so fucking weird to me. it's giving Will's abduction vibes where the first time we see something happen is actually the one time that doesn't fit the pattern, but bc it's the First time we can't question it yet. Will's abduction was the one that broke the pattern but bc we hadn't seen any other abduction yet we can only see that when looking back and comparing it with other instances. same way, Mike is clearly the odd one out of this entire "ofc i can see El in the void? no biggie?" lineup because he's the ONLY one on it to 1) not be related to El in some way (or have a family like connection like Will-El, and 2) not have powers

Hopper, agents, the rest of the party, etc all never see El in the void EVER despite her getting right up in people's faces, so there's clearly a reason why Some people are able to do it. i wonder if there IS actually a common denominator and we just don't know about it yet...

He's 1000% sus, I absolutely agree. There's something fucky about Mike Wheeler/the Wheelers, and while initially I attributed it to something narrative-only...my opinion has been swayed somewhat. It's weird. All of it is weird.

I thought El and Will were the Luke-Leia duo, but...the more I think on it the more it feels like El and Mike. He senses El the way Leia can sense Luke, which, as you said, he technically shouldn't be able to.

And then there's also the weirdness with Holly in the Byers house, how she always seems to be around when weird things are happening (Fleshflayer, the LiteBrite, the Spores, etc.), and the fact that she Very Much looks like a Creel.

Em has talked about Karen and Virginia stuff as it relates to Karen being an alternate timeline version of the Creel daughter (From the Edward Creel/Indianapolis Gazette timeline where Alice was the mother and Virginia was the sister), given that Cara Buono and Raphael Luce look pretty similar, as do Cara Buono and Tyner Rushing (Virginia, Henry's mother).I was highly skeptical of "Karen is Alice", and I still am. She's not Alice, imho. She's Virginia, hence all the paralleling to Henry's mother, Virginia.

Karen being Virginia (sister) would make Mike a Creel by blood as well, which would explain why he seems to have this weird ability to sense people. If Henry/Edward is El's father...well. That cousin bit from ST1 becomes a touch more literal...

As for Henry/Edward being an older brother figure rather than a father...there's some uncomfortable stuff to talk about here.

We're in Martin "Three-Legged Papa" Brenner's realm here. We're talking about the guy who kidnaps kids and makes them into superweapons for a living and seems to enjoy his work. We're talking about Martin "MKULTRA" Brenner. Who knows what kind of samples he was collecting from his prized subject?

(Mind you, this was all happening around the same time cells were stolen from Henrietta Lacks, whose regenerative capabilities provided a pure human cell line for medical research from 1951-Present Day. She was only recently recognized for her contribution/what was stolen from her. Keeping cell lines from test subjects would not be outside the realm of believablility, especially in Henry/Edward's case.)

Henry/Edward talks about Brenner wanting to "recreate him" and immediately segues into "soon, others were born". He includes reproduction in the list of things that bother him about the repetitiveness of life. He also has a weird amount of knowledge about Terry, enough to tell El about her.

He tells El about Terry breaking in, which means he was present for it...but that all happened in a different area of the lab. What was he doing up there? Why would Brenner assign him to be up there?

I'm staring directly at Henry/Edward/Vecna's "I just want you to watch" line, because that line applies to El...but it also applies to Brenner keeping him as an orderly with the kids. Brenner may have had Henry/Edward up there witnessing the fallout of his refusal to be controlled.

El has brown hair/brown eyes, yes, but that likely comes from Terry given that brown/brown is generally a dominant trait over blonde/blue. However, we see that Terry has (weak) abilities. If you combine that with Henry/Edward, you get a kid with freaky strong abilities: El. We also see that El has a lot of mannerisms that are derived from Henry...before we even know who Henry is.

So while Henry may have been an older brother/mentor figure, he could very well be her biological father.

(Also, an aside: Many young/unwilling parents end up being portrayed as an older sibling if their parents decide to raise the baby as such. So...not necessarily an uncommon type of relationship here, especially given the fucked up "family" dynamic in Brenner's lab.)

Anyway...

Mike: My point is, they'll take care of you. They'll be like your new parents! And Nancy, she'll be like your new sister.

El: Will you...be like my brother?

Hopper: There's something very wrong with this thing between Mike and El

Joyce: They're just kissing, right?
