Honestly, a thing I do like about my workplace is there is an active effort to reinforce, acknowledge and implement the idea of 'Healthcare employee self care makes for good customer / client care and a good business model'
Like its absolutely something ALL fields should adopt and understand but even from a strictly economic standpoint, health care, especially in patient mental health care has a HUGE turnover rate issue because of the sheer high stress, secondary trauma, and burn oit it can cause. Particularly in the job Im working at, training an on boarding can take a month or more before services even really are possible. So if someone burns out fast and/or quits because they dont feel respected, thats easily like $4k minimum wasted + people capable, qualified and willing to work in in patient mental health care are not an endless market, so if you burn through the local people willing to work theres a huge business model issue
And thats not even touching legal responsibilities and issues that can come up from over worked clinicians and staff that could cause lawsuits, loss for grants and closures if left unaddressed.

I got a new stethoscope this week (a much needed upgrade from the hand-me-down I've been used through nursing school and the last few years of being a nurse) and I get to use it for the first time during my shift tonight and I'm very excited. Everyone's getting auscultated tonight baby!

Vent post
I’m sick as a dog, right? Like— cough, chills, sore throat, achey— the whole kit and kaboodle with the exception of a fever. I offered to my boss that I would work a half day and go home after lunch so I could recover before it got any worse.
Backstory: I told these people when they hired me that my health wasn’t great. I need to have my tonsils removed and the chronic tonsillitis is causing my immune system to work like a dodge neon (not well at all.) I had been scheduled to get them removed in late February so that I could amend the issue in which I keep calling out because I got sick. They made me postpone it to mid April because one of one of my managers going on vacation.
On that note, I’m never more than 1 minute late to my shifts. This, to me, is damn impressive when you consider that the ADHD time blindness is REAL and difficult to take care of— especially when I was diagnosed late. They are about to write me up because I showed up “one minute late” more than 3 times in the past 6 months. Then the threatened to write me up for having to go home sick more than 6 times in the past six months.
The kicker? I work for a fucking hospital. The sort of place you’d expect would understand that health needs are a real thing. Besides that I hate coming in when I’m sick not because I can’t work while ill (I can, I just tend to make mistakes.) it’s because I know I’m still contagious and our patients (ages 60+) are immunocompromised. A cold for me could be deadly for them.
Plus I’m going to school full time on top of working full time too.
So what I mean to say is: make it make sense. You’re mad that we call in but we call in because we get sick and we all get sick because we still come to work when we are not feeling well because you don’t let us call in. If you don’t want me to take time off why give me PTO? I can’t h e l p if I get sick more than 6 times in 6 months. PLUS this issue would be under control if you guys would have let me get the tonsillectomy when I had originally scheduled it and decided to prioritize the needs of the clinic over my own personal health.
So anyway
I’m sick as all get out the rotting at this damn place that I hate because if I take care of myself I’ll get written up. It’s very cute. 🙄

Ahh, HIEEE 🖤 I’m Halo 👋🏻 tumblr has been my escape since high school (2010) but I took a break for a while as I shifted through some hard phases in life and learned a lot about myself through adulting, becoming a mother at 19, and just life’s bullshit but I am back and so excited to make new connections.
I love books, I am an artist and I also have a reptile obsession. I plan on getting the snakes, the frog and the cresties in my lives and on my page soon, they are so excited to say hiee 🐍
🦋 My inbox is always open, but be kind. I don’t tolerate asshat behavior, I’m not scared of my block button 😜

Book of the day #2
Trauma Stewardship: An everyday guide to caring for self while caring for others by Laura Van Dernoot Lipsky and Connie Burk
After working in primarily entry level mental healthcare positions, I can't express how important it is for people to learn how to nurture themselves! In healthcare, there seems to be a constant need for repressing one's emotions as a result of keeping the client/situation as the priority. This book breaks down the 16 signs of trauma exposure responses individuals may cultivate as a result of working in the emotional taxing fields of social work. I will list below the qualities of people (This book includes interviews with professionals such as EMT's, environmentalist's, child welfare workers, etc.) who shared similar characteristics needed to maintain resiliency for their mental health's sake. The authors listed other methods to center oneself in addition. While I have come to realize healthcare is not going to be my career choice (or degree choice T.T) I appreciate the incredible coworkers I have had and the wisdom they have shared with me. This field has caused me to grow as a compassionate human being and the client's will always hold a special place in my heart:) For anybody currently in the field, please read this book and feel comforted by the stories of other professionals struggling along, regardless of the years spent supporting other's and/or their causes. We can't support others without supporting ourselves first.
P.S I can't remember if these are directly pulled from the text or paraphrased by me so sorryyyy:)
A sense of Personal Control
Stress resistant people perceive a connection between their own actions and how they feel; they believe in their own capacity to influence the course of their lives.
Pursuit of Personally Meaningful Tasks
They are present and engaged in our lives, and this helps them to be active not passive, during challenging times.
Healthy Lifestyle Choices
They show "decreased use or general avoidance of known dietary stimulants of refined white sugar, caffeine and nicotine; they seek out multiple periods of hard exercise each week; and they find time each day for a period of relaxation."
Social Support
They have relationships with others who can serve as a buffer in dealing with difficult situations creating space for inquiry.
"Street yoga, is working to ensure that every person is at home in their own body, their own mind, and their own community, and that no one is ever homeless again." - Interview with street yoga non-profit worker

As a healthcare worker, I find it funny to realize people actually want to see you get hurt/sick/angry in order to say preventive measures just don't work, all the while governments don't have enough supplies for Covid, tuberculosis, cancer and PPE. How is it that a dead Doctor makes someone happier, instead of demanding better health services? How is a dead Doctor better than complaining about a system that lets this happen?

So the hospital I work at no longer requires us to wear masks generally. Feeling absolutely insane. Has this whole thing been memory-holed?

Hey I wanna be a phlebotomist, any advice on how to go about this being a high school drop out? Does it pay well?
i took a class on it. my class wasnt the best but i have work experience now anyway so its less important
it is so hard to get a job starting out. everyone struggles. id recommend plasma/blood donation places as a first job, because thats the easiest to get in. i did that first and now work at a hospital
pay really depends. i have a weekend differential and overtime and am making pretty good money for someone who doesnt have several years behind me. theres also often the possibility for raises. however, given our particular skillsets, we are still pretty underpaid. however, to be fair, thats just how the economy is right now (thanks capitalism)
most jobs unfortunately require a high school diploma or a ged, and this includes phlebotomy. i dont even think you can take courses in it unless you have a diploma/ged, so consider that
i work 12s as well and its not bad. i get 8hrs of overtime per pay period, which is nice. 12s seem daunting and maybe it was an easier adjustment because i worked up from 10s, but its nice having several weekdays off. i also have a biweekly schedule. but if you dont like long shifts, you can work up to an outpatient center eventually. i dont see myself ever working 5 8s again though
you do eventually want to get certified. theres two certifying bodies and they both require a certain number of capillaries and venipunctures. i personally have to have a year of full time phlebotomy experience to be eligible for the certificate test but im working on it, i already have the sticks (10 capillaries and 30 venipunctures). if you take an accredited course, you can skip the year part
