Jinshi’s Scar

Why did she do it and why did he accept it?

Why Shisui gave him the scar:

Overall I think this is fairly simple. Regardless of how her mother treated her, the bad blood between them with her sister or the downfall of the clan, a part of Shisui loved her mother and wanted to do something to show she could please her.

The one thing her mother seemed to want was to get back at the former Emperor for spurning her. Even if she didn’t understand the motives behind it, she hated him. So Shisui marking Jinshi is basically fulfilling her mother’s one wish, to get back at the face of the empire in the only way really left possible to her. Is it somewhat petty and ultimately futile? Yes, but it’s a young woman showing what little love and honor remains for a mother who never gave any back to her.

I believe it also has to do with her knowing that if she does make this choice to mark a royal person, she will be punished and as she had realized by then, there was no turning back. The only choice was to cast the stage light on herself to pull it away from others like her sister. So in scarring Jinshi, she ensures that those who protect him will act against her as the final villainess and with Jinshi's protection, leave her sister alone.

Why Jinshi accepted being scarred:

Outwardly this seems like a strange choice that he would let the enemy’s daughter mar his face. Especially when we learn that he knows his subordinates would be punished if his face is damaged. Here’s the double-edged sword to that though, Jinshi at his core is a very caring person, almost to his own destruction at times. We see when he confronts Shishou and the solider is nearly shot, Jinshi steps in front of him and blocks it.

This is shocking considering he’s the one meant to be protected and the Prince. So for him to willingly let Shisui scar his face when he knows others will be punished when he’s tried hard to keep from people being hurt shows that he’s doing this for a deeper purpose. Jinshi’s subordinates will not be privy to the bigger picture of everything Jinshi learns about the Shi Clan plot and how it ties into the nation as a whole. He is the one who willingly takes on the burden of the knowledge and the atonement for the former emperor’s wrongdoings.

As Jinshi says after Shisui asks him why he didn't take the feifa from her. "You had something you wanted to tell me." He's a reasonable and sympathetic person, once he's listened to her story, he grants her requests, one of those being to scar his own face. Jinshi has also always struggled with wondering if he looks like the Emperor and feeling the burden to break away from that legacy, this scar in a sense finally gives him the chance to do so. That’s why he embraces it almost in a fond way later in the novels.

So for Shisui this scar was the last severance of familial obligation and love for a parent who couldn’t get past her revenge and for Jinshi it was about trying to right wrongs done by the past and show a new way forward, even to rid himself of his “nymph” status by having a flaw. The scar is important to both for what it represents as a means for change.

Later at the wish granting ceremony, CEO Magnifico announces he’s greenlit Ice Age 6 and five more live-action remakes.

There are so many cancelled and unrealized projects that Disney is sitting on, that they do not benefit from in any way by keeping them locked up tight. They really ought to just let them go if they don't have any intentions of doing anything with them.

Incidentally, I could never agree with the mentality of “Magnifico is actually the hero, and Asha is the TRUE villain” that a lot of people seem to have. I drew my comic based on this post. I feel like if more people had been aware of this possible interpretation, they wouldn’t have sympathized with Magnifico.

Does Wish have bad writing? Yes, it does. And it’s because of that bad writing that every single character suffers. What I think happened is that, as a result of said bad writing, Asha became a character that’s so uncompelling and lacks uniqueness that she ends up a blank slate for audiences to project their frustrations with the movie onto. King Magnifico on the other hand, is probably the most interesting and entertaining character, due in no small part to Chris Pine’s performance, and so the audience is much more sympathetic towards him and willing to ignore his flaws.

One of Asha’s problems as a character is that she doesn’t really contribute much to the story. By contrast, Magnifico’s downfall is brought about entirely as a result of his own actions. Magnifico is in fact not a good leader, because he gives in to paranoia and temptation, acts in a very unprofessional manner, and escalates the conflict to an absurd degree.

Please note, Asha does not get upset that Magnifico refuses to grant her grandfather’s wish, nor does she ever demand that Magnifico needs to grant every wish. She gets upset that he insinuates that her grandfather might have dangerous intentions, and because he does not have a convincing reason why he doesn’t return wishes that he won’t grant. Rather than calmly explaining his reasoning to her, Magnifico rudely dismisses Asha and then blows up at her.

If Magnifico were a good leader, he would have explained to each person WHY he won’t grant their wish, and given them advice on alternatives. As it stands, he knows full well that everyone expects their wish to be granted. It’s why they even came to Rosas in the first place, it is the literal reason he even built his kingdom. He clearly makes a big spectacle out of the wish granting ceremonies, which every citizen visibly goes wild for. He never elaborates to anyone his specific standards for the wishes he chooses to grant, other than a broad statement of "for the good of the kingdom". In his regard, Magnifico reminds me of bureaucratic systems that never provide every option or solution upfront, with their logic being "you didn't ask".

Not to mention, he literally tells Asha, "People think wishes are just ideas. But no, no, they are a part of your heart. The very best part." He knows, for a fact, how important wishes are to everyone. But the movie's awful writing makes him think the best solution to dealing with wishes that MIGHT have dangerous consequences, is to just hoard them. All that returning the ungranted wishes will accomplish is returning the memory of what the wish even is, that's literally it, and the people will be no better off than they were before they gave Magnifico their wish.

I dunno about you guys, but whenever I watched stories that preached “be careful what you wish for”, my takeaway was never “your desires could be dangerous and you should never pursue them for fear of disaster”, I always thought the stories were telling us, “beware of anything that promises instant gratification, because it’s usually too good to be true, and will cost you more than you will gain”. While the things you want in life may have disastrous consequences, you won’t really know until you try to pursue them through your own honest efforts, and not through “magical” shortcuts. That’s how we learn and grow, through trial and error. 

As it currently stands from my point of view, when people say "Magnifico has every right to keep ungranted wishes" it looks like they're unintentionally saying, “The Disney Corporation has every right to keep your work and ideas, because you willingly and legally handed them over. Tough luck if you regret the deal you were given. No takesies backsies!”

While I have found no evidence to confirm that the filmmakers intended for Magnifico to be a criticism of Corporate Disney, considering the inclusion of the animation sweatshop scene in Pixar's Inside Out 2, I think the probability is likely. (Not to mention, when Asha shows Magnifico her little flipbook animation, he dismissively remarks “Do we consider that a talent?”)

Please note, everyone is free to rewrite and reinterpret Magnifico however they want. He's just a fictional character after all, and fan content is supposed to be for fun. I just think it's funny how defensive people get over him a he appears in the final movie. They say he deserved better, and I agree, but we have very different ideas of what "better" means. In fact, I think every character in Wish deserved better, because again, they were all victims of bad writing. My problem isn't that they took a good man and made him arbitrarily "evil", it's that they didn't make him evil enough from the very beginning. Remember those deleted scenes featuring a villainous Magnifico with better writing, along with an evil Amaya that he can play off of? I'm fairly certain that everyone unanimously agreed these deleted scenes were much better than the final movie, and yet some still insist that Magnifico should have been a hero all along. I dunno, it's a funny dichotomy. 

EDIT: A few days after posting I came across this video essay supporting the interpretation of Magnifico as a critique of Corporate Disney and I loved it. Please go watch it!

Funny enough, I like the fact that mainly the Sam comment got a negative response.

Whatever first, confession: This was 90% written the way it was bc I wanted to see how ragey people get over certain things so. It's my own version of an internet test.

And also I specified 'my opinion' on 'characters and controversial topics'. Logically, that should stand to mean it only applies to me and it's okay to have different opinions bc we all respect each other's opinions here? Right? That's a thing?

Anyways, context bc you insisted. (and also ig bc they did in the replies @oyedeng and @red-balloon12- which, kudos to red ballon for actually asking in a semi-neutral way)

Oh, and I'd like to request, if you want to retaliate, hit every single point bc according to you they're all 'bad takes'.

Loki needed a hug and was a victim as well as a villain. -> I can go on about this, but to put it short, a lot of Loki's arc was centered around loneliness. If he had at any point had his pain acknowledged- and it didn't have to be necessarily done in a way to say he was innocent just acknowledging he was hurt as well- it's highly likely he wouldn't have gone off the deep end in Thor/Avengers. Of course, he's still a VILLAIN, he hurt people, but if given a support system, it's highly likely he wouldn't have.

Stark and Steve were both right; but Steve kept a secret he shouldn't have and was wrong for that. -> Ref to Civil War, both sides were right to some extent and had understandable reasons for their actions, but Steve kept the fact that the Winter Soldier killed Tony's parents on the down low when he shouldn't have.

Tony trying to kill Bucky was understandable but not excusable. -> Pretty self-explanatory. It's not excusable to attempt murder at all- but you CAN understand where he's coming from, it's not him being a villain or edgy or anything. I'd argue it's not even really an overreaction. (Found out his mom was in fact murdered + somebody he considers a close friend knew that and hid it from him to protect the killer = strong emotions = bad outcome. Still not excusable tho)

Mobius and the TVA hurt others bc they'd been used and abused. -> Eh, self-explanatory. They pruned entire timelines, which is basically murder indirectly (Because they only died when Alioth eat them/somebody else ate them), because they had been manipulated by HWR into thinking it's the best option.

She-Hulk sucks as a character. -> AS A CHARACTER, she has less of a full-feeling arc TO ME. I feel a big part of Hulk in general (Hulk and Red-Hulk) was about the fear of losing control and hurting others/self-loathing, while She-Hulk just has a cool alt skin and super strength so it wasn't my favorite. She had other issues, they just weren't as relatable.

So does Captain Marvel. -> Tbh, this one was more the writing didn't make her feel like a threat, we were more told she's the most powerful.

Yelena and Kate were an amazing pass down of legacy. -> They were, idk what else to say, they had ties to the OG six and fill the roles well. I love them.

Bucky shouldn't be a politician. -> Just felt off to me why he's a politician all of a sudden. Again, I haven't watched Thunderbolts* so i don't know if it's highly relevent there, but in TFATWS and Cap 4, if he has to be one, they didn't set it up that way at all. In TFATWS he was dealing w/ issues and then suddenly he's a politician (And I know there was a time jump but still)

Sam's not a bad Captain America- he IS a bad friend. -> And the biggy ig. Sam rubbed me as the wrong way as Cap several times because he's VERY dismissive of Bucky's past and trauma while being far more sympathetic to the villains, although I liked him as Cap in Brave New World. I understand it makes sense for Sam's character to be sympathetic, I feel as though he wasn't as sympathetic to Bucky, making comments about WS, killing machine, etc (and that kind of almost personally attacking comments was largely one-sided for the show (IE, Sam gets called wingman iirc, not like. Murderer.)), when Bucky was shown to still be dealing w/ guilt over it/not in a good headspace. While Bucky does eventually come around to apologize to Sam, Sam never truly apologizes. In addition, Sam, similar to Raynor, seems to treat Bucky = Winter Soldier, like he should be held accountable (Because they're pushing Bucky to 'make amends'. He CAN apologize to them, but he needs to have his trauma cared for first. Sam's a good friend to OTHER people (Torres, Isaiah, Sarah, etc.) so perhaps a general 'bad friend' wasn't the best choice, but he wasn't exactly the right term, but he wasn't the greatest friend to Bucky. (And yes, I'm aware a good part of that could come from the actors' dynamic, where they're ribbing on each other, it just felt out of place in the show because of Bucky's headspace) I LIKE their dynamic I just felt it was one-sided for a while, esp. compared to Isaiah and Torres w/ Sam. Not saying he wasn't empathetic and/or helpful, just that he wasn't the greatest overall. And that IS a big part bc of poor writing, but once writing flaws hit the screen, they’re canon. Again, Sam's not a bad character, or Bucky's innocent in this (Bucky's overall a good friend tho bc he apologizes/is loyal to a fault, so that's why he didn't get a comment), and their dynamic is fun, but it was written poorly and in a way that makes Sam seem lack empathy to Bucky.

Captain America's as a whole seem to have a trend of being bad friends to Bucky when it matters most. -> See above and below

Steve should have died in Endgame, not gone back in time. -> If the whole POINT in him going back in time to return the stones was to prevent an alternate timeline, this makes no sense. In addition, it seems he didn't do what Sam did for Isaiah (IE, clear his friend of the charges bc he was used like a tool and had no control) for Bucky, so. That's fun. And I get they wanted him written out, so he should have died bc I don't think he'll retire if in peak shape.

Sylki was a cool ship in theory, horrible in practice, and Sylvie had no gd character arc. -> It represented self-love, cool. I still didn't like it bc personal taste. And Sylvie had no arc, she remained pretty stagnant in her 'personal freedom > all, fuck the consequences' mindset. The only amount of growth she had was not killing Viktor Timely, which yay! But still, she never moved beyond that core mindset so she had minimal growth, which was sad because she could have been a cool character too.

Odin's an asshole./Thor is an asshole BECAUSE Odin raised him that way./Loki and Hela too tbh. -> They all line up. Odin's an asshole, yes, that's pretty clear based on how he acts in TDW, and also hiding Hela, and also his punishments for his kids and how they vary WILDLY for pretty much the same thing (They all tried to destroy Jötunheim. It makes sense Thor had the lightest sentence bc he didn't have anything else. Yet Hela did more than Loki in trying to conquer all nine realms not just Earth and yet Loki only barely escaped a death sentence while Hela got locked up. I can expand more on this too tbh)

Frigga is a B parent at BEST. -> Bc she was complicit in most/all Odin did.

Loki and Thor need writers who actually watched the past movies/shows and know their damn arcs (All of the characters do tbh, but these two have it. So bad.) -> Not sure how this is a bad take, but okay ig? Thor just gets a lot of regression and Loki's arc feels inconsistent at places.

Clint got done dirty by the writers/plot lines and so did Bruce. (They/their arcs got forgotten/never existed, it felt like.) -> I explained this one a bit, they didn't get the most complete arcs in the movies. (Bruce got flattened into Smart hulk, and Clint just gets forgotten a lot from what I've seen)

Bucky got done SO dirty he deserves his own point. -> His trauma got glazed over/used as a plot point. Which, consistent for Marvel, but still, give him a good therapist please.

Ditto for Loki. -> I'm just biased, I love him, but he also can't have a happy ending (Died in Movies timeline right after fixing his relationship w/ Thor, and then in the series he befriended ppl and grew and is now alone forever.)

Cooler Than Me

SHANKS

Shanks is the type to approach things in a fun way.

As the Captain, Shanks is certainly used to making rational decisions that can be explained with logical reasoning… as a person, however, he isn’t quite as likely to keep his cool. He’d be miserable once the heat gets to him and lose it on a pretty tight schedule. Frustrated groans and curses just follow him around once he realised that his own sweat seeped through today’s linen shirt once more – after he’d let his cape be, too. It’s a tragedy! With you as his beloved, he tries to prevent himself from turning into a complete grump, but every sweet moment at night is cut off after he realises, after barely a minute, that he cannot cuddle you to sleep today without dying.

Shanks is still very much smitten with you and cannot bear to watch you suffer just as much as he does. Most of his crew can handle the heat, some even prefer the intense climate of summer islands, but you two stick out like a sore thumb. Shanks, as fun-loving as ever, would try to cheer you up by eating popsicles with you. It’s a sweet treat that cools you from the inside out – and he can share flavours with you. Watching how giggly you get when you saw just how deeply red the ice cold popsicle dyed his tongue made it worth all the hassle. He excitedly looks at your own tongue, now dyed as blue as the sea.

And he cannot help but kiss you right then and there.

BENN BECKMAN

Benn is the type to approach things in a methodical way.

Benn is a force to be reckoned with. You may not hear him, but you can feel his presence; that’s how imposing he is. Despite not hailing from more exotic lands, he can handle the heat quite well. If the temperatures rise too much, he cools himself down by keeping his hair wet. Still, he’s willing to move crates around, do ship maintenance and do other forms of physical labour. It honestly makes you jealous. He is so unbothered that he doesn’t even look like he’s sweating all that much. Meanwhile, you can barely move around without breaking a sweat. Moisture gathers at the nape of your neck as the sun beats down on you, which has you taking a shower almost twice a day. It is ridiculous!

Benn notices just how much you struggle, feeling sympathetic towards the person he secretly fell in love with… He doesn’t want to treat you any different from the rest, you should be able to fit in without any complications, but the Vice Captain himself just cannot ignore his affections for you, no matter how much he tries to bury them. He follows you around like a ghost and wordlessly hands you glasses of water. Somehow, he picked up on your bad habits and takes care of you in his own way. The water’s always cool, fresh and he always appears when you need him the most.

It’s bizarre, but you might just pick up on the fact that acts of service are his love language and he’s desperately trying to be serious and respectful about this…

MARCO

Marco is the type to approach things in an analytical way.

Marco is a doctor, which means that he’s definitely best equipped to help you. Plus, his eyes just dart towards you fanning hot air towards yourself after Whitebeard asked you to mop the deck… and you just chose to do it in the dry heat. Congratulations, now you’ve got Marco monitoring you. He watches you carefully, analysing every sway with a judgmental gaze – he’s always ready to step in and excuse you for the day, but he also doesn’t want to take your autonomy away. You’re independent and he honours your own decisions, no matter how irrational they may seem. If you want to work in the sun, fine, but he’s not letting up until he can make sure you’re safe.

He loves you so dearly, that’s why he doesn’t even mind sneaking around your peripheral vision to make it seem like he’s nonchalant about his pining… he’s really not. He’s just waiting to pin your hair up and apply wet towels to your pulse points, slowly cooling your blood down. That refreshing feeling will distribute itself evenly throughout your body and he can just watch with a soft smile as relief makes you go lax instantly. And he’s just there, touching your neck and wrists like it doesn’t make him nervous, like there’s no fire in his eyes at the sight of you feeling so safe in his presence… You’d rest your pretty head on his shoulder and let him check your vitals… just to be close to you without seeming like a total try-hard!

Marco’s also most likely to keep you in the med bay and secretly fan air towards you with his fiery wings. It’ll be your little secret!

ACE

Ace is the type to approach things in a silly way.

So… being around Ace when you’re suffering from the extreme weather is actually pretty hard. His body temperature is just naturally a lot higher, which means the match-up is just overall bad. He trails after you like a lost puppy as he ignores all those stares that follow the two of you around. Ace doesn’t feel the heat at all – the fact that fire is hot doesn’t even register to him; he’s made of it. Of course he notices that you’re not exactly in top shape… you sweat a lot, started carrying around a massive jug of water – oh, and you avoid touching him. He’s yearning so bad, flashing you the sad kicked animal eyes every five minutes because he cannot stand not being close to you…

Ace does, however, have a genius idea that he remembers from his childhood.

You aren’t as impressed as he is when he presents a tiny kiddie pool to you… right on the main deck. Anyone could watch you lounge here, but your dear boyfriend even propped up a deckchair right next to this abomination… and the thought alone is what counts. It’s kind of sweet, to be honest, to watch him go bright red as soon as you sit down in a tiny puddle of water, looking up at him with a deadpan expression, legs hanging off one side of the meagre ‘pool’, but he still listens with rapt attention once you tell him what you’ve been up to on this hot day. He even clenches his fist in victory for this million Beri idea.

And… it’s ridiculous, but it did cool you down!

The annoying thing is that reducing Solas to a dislikable two dimensional caricature in Veilguard didn't even come close to fixing the problem they set out to fix in doing so, and it was never going to.

I can’t pull up the exact quote, but I believe one of the writing team said something along the lines that they needed to make Solas less sympathetic because at the end of Trespasser too many people agreed with him and wanted to end the world. Which is why they chose to have him kill Varric, among other things. 

While I will say that I agree with the choice to have him kill Varric(I like the idea of him making Rook hallucinate him too, that could have been sweet if it had been well executed rather than a bland set up for a M. Night Shyamalan level twist) to raise the stakes and set Solas up as a serious antagonist for a new audience, or an audience that hadn’t been paying particularly close attention to him - but there is no way it could have ever suddenly made his goal to tear down the veil unsympathetic for those who found it to be so.

The writers seem to have been under the impression that members of the audience sympathised with Solas’ plan to tear down the veil not on its own merits, but for the draw of his sparkling personality alone. Not for well established lore related reasons, or for extra-narrative reasons rooted in a desire for emotional catharsis and narrative satisfaction (which a fictional body count has even less bearing on besides) but because he’s a sad pretty elf boi and we want to kiss it all better.

I’m going to be real with you, if they had surgically transplanted Ogrehn’s personality onto Solas and had him stone cold murder every other beloved character in the series, I would still want the  Veil to come down, or at the very least a better solution than leaving it just as it is. How likeable he is or isn’t has fuck all to do with it? 

Making Solas more dislikable does nothing to change the effect the Veil has on spirits and mages, it does nothing to address the question of the value of mortal lives weighted against immortal ones. It does not change the narrative role of a trickster in bringing enlivening chaos and upheaval to a stagnating world, in this case one that’s been forced to stagnate in service of the illusion of player choice; nor does it quiet our desire to see the rotten roots of Thedas’ corrupt institutions torn up and put to the torch ect. ect.

Most annoyingly, attempting to use Varric's death to accomplish this betrays the writer's assumption that players that did sympathise with Solas’ goals did so out of a naive misapprehension that he’s some sweet uwu softboy that could never do anything truly ruthless or cruel in order to accomplish his goals, and that once we had been disabused of that belief we would clutch our pearls in horror(you mean he’s willing to kill people? In a video game series with protagonists that each have kill counts numbering in the thousands? Quick, summon my fainting couch!) and tidily dismiss the notion that he might have ever had any worthwhile motivations at all. 

Look all you silly little girlies that want to kiss the fictional man, I feel like you don’t understand that he’s the *bad guy* here, glad we’ve cleared that up for you sweetheart. And isn’t he just sooo condescending?

It does not seem to have occurred to the writers that, to his fans, his stone cold ruthlessness is both one of the most well understood and deeply compelling features of the character.

I would happily give that writer a pass on a wicked case of foot in mouth, but the way Anaris & Cyran are written seems to very much enforce their the stance that an overabundance of sympathy for Solas as a person, as well as a desire to see him vindicated are the primary reasons any of the audience would ever agree with his goals. 

So to fix this issue, it stands to reason that the writers needed to de-emphasise everything that humanised(for lack of a better term) Solas and made him sympathetic as a person. Because apparently the problem is that their attempts to do so in the previous game worked a little too well on some people, right? 

As @mythalism pointed out, we cannot see him comfort his friends through their panic or grief or their crisis of faith, or have hushed philosophical conversations with them. We cannot see him flirt awkwardly, or try to pretend he didn’t just set his own coattails on fire.

He can’t ever say anything mean to Rook - that might hurt our feelings!

He doesn’t really do anything bad, and if he does he doesn’t really mean it. He committed war crimes, but only because Mythal asked him nicely. He killed Varric, but it was an accident. He makes Rook hallucinate Varric, but he doesn’t use that to manipulate them; Varric just hangs out and vibes. He uses blood magic on you, but he doesn’t do any of the truly fucked up violating things that we know full well blood magic is capable of. He misleads you when he says “the Veil will not fall by my hand”, but it’s so transparent that it’s laughable. He’s never allowed the conviction to really follow through on any of his misdeeds, while still he’s bizarrely framed as outright villainous for them. 

So what we’re left with is a character divested of most of his admirable qualities, but with most of the rough edges filed off as well. Toothless. Boring.

It feels so much like they’re talking down to their audience? Like they don’t trust us to see a character with BOTH vices and virtues in spades come to our own conclusions about them? 

So we get this bland mealy-mouthed version of the character that we apparently need watered down further with ‘our team’s’ insipid commentary, much of which is blatantly based on bad takes people were spewing online almost a decade ago, and many of which have no bearing whatsoever on the actual story we’re being told because ohh my godd apparently we need to have our hands held while we’re walked though every opinion the audience might theoretically  have about the character and gently reassured by proxy that it’s a hashtag #valid opinion and why does this game insist on speaking to us like we’re morons??

For all that they incessantly bring up how condescending Solas is, I’m not sure if I've ever felt more spoken down to by a story I had been so invested in.

Piltover has always been the wrong party, the bad and morally bankrupt side - even compared to SILCO of all people (in my opinion), Piltover is just the worst and nothing can redeem the. That badass entrance of Jinx and the Zaunites SHOULD have been them decimating BOTH Piltovan and Noxian forces without discrimination. It's literally what Piltover deserves for their actions!

though speaking of? my theory was right. joe did not give a FUCK about the murders. he's the only sane one of the show but he is still georgia's number 1 superfan. i know this is a soap opera drama but whatever

obviously if they're going down this route im team joe. show it's bad enough that you had this man go to her wedding to paul after he confessed his feelings and then you had them reach this lovely little mutual understanding by the end. georgia wants to be better for her kids so she isn't diving into another romantic relationship so she can focus all of her attention on them. joe is absolutely on board with this. this man was prepared to visit her in prison possibly her entire life sentence okay YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW LONG HE HAS WAITED. luke danes waited 7 years. JOE HAS WAITED 16 YEARS. unknowingly but still. please ginny and georgia end after season 4. they're obviously ending up together so don't have this man watch her have a baby with paul fucking randolph okay?? i don't like babyplots but if you're going down this road have it be joe's OR false alarm. please? please?

im weirdly very passionate about this show. anyways! onto other topics of discussion of this show. the baker family. okay so the final few episodes were a LOT. marcus was doing pretty well in this season but then his mental health got crazy terrible like pits terrible and he was less iconic in the last few episodes. i am so happy LIKE STOKED that they're making max more sympathetic now. in the final episode they fully season 1 abby'd max crazy hard. oh my fucking god i understand that max was bad but i am 100% a max defender now and the show is too. like max is ignored for most of the season and then everyone is like "max is just getting so dramatic at us" i know you guys are kids and max has been a lot but can you have like a grain, a drop of perspective here. or just stop being friends with her. you hate her so much let the theatre kids take care of her.

austin's becoming a really interesting character. he's obviously very resentful of what he had to do in court and even if you know your parent is a violent guy dude (no offense to ginny) being forced or at least pressured into accusing your dad of a murder you know he didn't commit when he personally hasn't harmed you but you do know that he has harmed others its a lot. breaking the glasses was crazy holy crap plus he shot his dad last season? can he pretty please go to therapy now

wolfe was a funny fucking character this season. when he first showed up i loved him a lot ngl and i still do. but That's Wild is so hilariously bad. i understand him but that reaction is the funniest most chaotic thing ever. he literally went "damn thats crazy" and drove away LMAO that's so terrible. but! im glad the show didn't go "and now he deserves to die so we'll hate him into oblivion" because as immature as that reaction was, like ginny said, she does not think he's evil. i really liked him lol he was so chill the entire time, even when he knew he was an active rebound. he still hung around. he came back another day and was supportive of ginny. wolfe wasn't so bad guys <3 but for the love of god condom next time okay. glad he and ginny ended up chill in the end. though ginny did fr go through an emotional shit storm and he did not support her at all until later work on that

In any case, war is something human beings do and show no signs of stopping doing, and so it may be less important to condemn it or to justify it than to be able to perceive it as tragic.

But once you take sides, you have lost that ability.

Is it our dominant religion that makes us want war to be between the good guys and the bad guys?

In the War of Good vs. Evil there can be divine or supernal justice but not human tragedy. It is by definition, technically, comic (as in The Divine Comedy): the good guys win. It has a happy ending. If the bad guys beat the good guys, unhappy ending, that’s mere reversal, flip side of the same coin. The author is not impartial. Dystopia is not tragedy.

Milton, a Christian, had to take sides, and couldn’t avoid comedy. He could approach tragedy only by making Evil, in the person of Lucifer, grand, heroic, and even sympathetic — which is faking it. He faked it very well.

Maybe it’s not only Christian habits of thought but the difficulty we all have in growing up that makes us insist justice must favor the good.

After all, 'Let the best man win' doesn’t mean the good man will win. It means, 'This will be a fair fight, no prejudice, no interference — so the best fighter will win it.' If the treacherous bully fairly defeats the nice guy, the treacherous bully is declared champion. This is justice. But it’s the kind of justice that children can’t bear. They rage against it. It’s not fair!

But if children never learn to bear it, they can’t go on to learn that a victory or a defeat in battle, or in any competition other than a purely moral one (whatever that might be), has nothing to do with who is morally better.

Might does not make right — right?

Therefore right does not make might. Right?

But we want it to. 'My strength is as the strength of ten because my heart is pure.'

If we insist that in the real world the ultimate victor must be the good guy, we’ve sacrificed right to might. (That’s what History does after most wars, when it applauds the victors for their superior virtue as well as their superior firepower.) If we falsify the terms of the competition, handicapping it, so that the good guys may lose the battle but always win the war, we’ve left the real world, we’re in fantasy land — wishful thinking country.

Homer didn’t do wishful thinking.

Homer’s Achilles is a disobedient officer, a sulky, self-pitying teenager who gets his nose out of joint and won’t fight for his own side. A sign that Achilles might grow up someday, if given time, is his love for his friend Patroclus. But his big snit is over a girl he was given to rape but has to give back to his superior officer, which to me rather dims the love story. To me Achilles is not a good guy. But he is a good warrior, a great fighter — even better than the Trojan prime warrior, Hector. Hector is a good guy on any terms — kind husband, kind father, responsible on all counts — a mensch. But right does not make might. Achilles kills him.

The famous Helen plays a quite small part in The Iliad. Because I know that she’ll come through the whole war with not a hair in her blond blow-dry out of place, I see her as opportunistic, immoral, emotionally about as deep as a cookie sheet. But if I believed that the good guys win, that the reward goes to the virtuous, I’d have to see her as an innocent beauty wronged by Fate and saved by the Greeks.

And people do see her that way. Homer lets us each make our own Helen; and so she is immortal.

I don’t know if such nobility of mind (in the sense of the impartial 'noble' gases) is possible to a modern writer of fantasy. Since we have worked so hard to separate History from Fiction, our fantasies are dire warnings, or mere nightmares, or else they are wish fulfillments."

Jin: He would be so kind and gentle with you, especially on your bad days, handling you with the utmost care and helping with anything you might need. He’s always looking up tips and tricks that help with your symptoms, whether it’s special recipes to help with inflammation, or pressure points to massage to help with muscle or joint pain. Anything he can do to make you feel a bit more comfortable, even if it’s just cuddles, he’ll do it.

Yoongi: He’s had quite a bit of experience with chronic pain in the past, so I think he’d be very sympathetic to your struggles. He’d try to find little ways to help you with day to day things, all the while making sure not to seem like he’s babying you or like you’re incapable of handling things on your own, he just wants to make you feel supported and cared for. He’s especially soft with you on days when you’re hurting more than usual, wrapping you up in blankets and holding you gently.

Hobi: He thinks you’re the strongest person in the world. The fact that you deal with your pain on such a regular basis and continue on with daily life as well as you do blows his mind, but he knows sometimes it gets to be too much, and then all he can do is be there to comfort you and try his best to distract you from your pain. He’s always finding opportunities to hype you up, calling you superman/woman, and offering to help in whatever ways he can.

Namjoon: He doesn’t say it, but he’s always keeping an extra close eye on you, especially whenever you’re out together, ready to help out or suggest taking a break if he notices you having a tougher time than usual. He tends to worry about how you’re feeling and if you’re resting enough, but he tries to keep it reigned in, because he trusts that you’ll tell him if you’re struggling or need help. He’s your biggest hype man and advocate, making sure you have whatever you need while avoiding you feeling like he’s coddling you.

Jimin: He’s such a sweetheart, he can’t stand seeing you hurting and not do something to try and help. He does everything he can think of to help make your bad days a little bit better, whether that’s helping with chores around the house, bringing you heating/cooling pads or pain meds, massaging sore muscles, or just snuggling in bed. You name it, it’s done. He always makes sure to celebrate your better days, but he has ways of making the worse ones feel special in their own way too, like building pillow forts for you to watch movies in or planning mini spa days when you don’t feel up to going out.

Taehyung: He’s the softest baby with you on your tougher days, being super patient as he helps you with anything you need assistance with and giving you all the cuddles you could ever want. It breaks his heart to know that he can’t fix your pain or make it go away completely, but he’ll do his best to make you feel as comfortable and loved as possible. The only time you’ll ever see him turn serious is if he catches you talking badly about yourself on your harder days, immediately shutting down your insecurities and reminding you how strong you are and how proud he is of you.

Jungkook: This sweetie, you mention you’re hurting or struggling with something, and he’s doing anything and everything in his power to help you. Man would straight up carry you around the house if you’d let him, lol. He just wants to be supportive and help make your life a little easier, even if it’s just opening jars because your hands are a little stiff that day. He’s incredibly empathetic, so your bad days would absolutely break his heart, staying by your side and babying you as much as you’ll allow him to, reminding you all the while how proud he is of you and telling you how amazing he thinks you are.

He loves the bumps and grooves on the back of your comfy thighs. He loves trailing his hands across your stretch marks when you're cuddling or when he's laying down on your lap.

He'll lift up your shirts and kiss any stretch marks that travel up to your tummy and he'll look and give you a warm smile if his kisses tickle your soft skin.

"These are a part of you and they all tell a story. I love every part of you including this." He says softly, pressing a gentle kiss on one of your stretch marks. "And this" He continues to kiss every stretchmark on your body, his touch showing you how much he cherishes each one.

He's a doctor and he's seen almost how every body looks and operates so he'll know that stretch marks are completely normal. He just didn't understand why you would care so much about something so small about stretch marks because they were natural for anyone growing. Anytime you guys were intimate, he'd like tracing against them with his cool fingers and will mindlessly rub circles on your striped skin. tears form in dean’s eyes

there is a knock on dean’s door, his brother’s voice is heard from behind the door “dean? you in here?”

dean clears his throat and wipes his eyes before he answers “yeah” his voice raspy from the alcohol he’s been drinking.

sam slowly opens the door, noticing dean sitting by the table behind the door, bottles of whiskey sitting on the table, some of them empty.

“dean you haven’t been out your room for a couple days, what’s going on?” sam asks with a worried look.

“have you been drinking all this time?” he asks, picking up one of the empty bottles, assessing it before putting it down.

dean says nothing. just takes another sip from his glass. sam sighs.

“talk to me man..” sam’s voice softening up knowing that his brother’s behaviour only means one thing and one thing only, dean is trying to run away from something. and that something usually being his own feelings and thoughts.

sam looks at dean with his well-known puppy eyes, “please..” he pleads.

“leave me alone sam” dean finally speaks, obviously shutting his brother out, but what else is he supposed to do when that’s all he knows thanks to john.

sam knows not to push his brother because it’s just no use, so all he does is sigh,

“alright.. i did find us a case though” he offers hoping dean will finally leave his room. get some fresh air. eat something. maybe even crack a half smile after the hunt is a success.

“you two can handle it” dean says in a monotone voice as he takes another sip. sam’s heart aches seeing his older brother like this, his jaw clenching slightly. the feeling of hopelessness flooding his system. he doesn’t remember the last time dean was in such a bad place. well at least to a point where he shuts himself in his room for days.

“so what now you’re just not going to talk to me and drink yourself to death? is that it?” sam tries very hard not to snap at him, but even he has his limit of patience.

“pretty much, yeah” dean shrugs, sounding more and more numb, like he actually doesn’t care what happens to him.

sam lets out a small scoff and shakes his head in disbelief, the dean he knows wasn’t a quitter, dean would never give up.

his brother is battling something very serious inside his head but he refuses to open up. wouldn’t be a first, but this time it seems as serious as ever.

“this isn’t like you dean, you have to talk me” sam attempts the soft approach again, he closes the door and sits down on the edge of the bed, his voice sympathetic yet pleading.

dean isn’t happy about sam pushing him, especially that he wasn’t going to tell him that he fell in love with his brother’s girlfriend, he wasn’t going to tell him how she makes his heart flutter whenever he hears her voice, or how he cannot keep his eyes off her when she smiles so beautifully, he cannot tell him that every time sam kisses her he wishes to be in sam’s spot, or even the fact that he can’t stop feeling guilty that he even fell for her in the first place,

i mean come on.

this ain’t a fairytale with a happy ending where they all hug it out and live happily ever after.

"Hey, look at me," Jisung says as he grabs your face. You were beginning to hyperventilate after seeing the look on Minho's face.

"Jisung I-"

"Stop, just breathe, okay, close your eyes," He held your face as you focused on every breath count.

Why did the idea of these two crossing paths make you so anxious and uncomfortable? Minho had been around your ex's before, even going as far as trying to befriend them for your sake. So, why was this any different? After your heart rate began to level, Jisung pulled you into a hug rubbing your back soothingly as he called someone. It was only a few moments after, you picked up you head to see the puppy faced boy who was the 2nd person closest to you.

Seungmin took the seat on your on the side of you before ruffling your hair.

"What's wrong?" He asked sympathetically. Even his voice was enough to ground you in something.

You gave him the run down of saturday morning's argument with Minho, then going out and meeting Hyunjin, going home with Hyunjin, to now sitting outside the dance studio where the two have crossed paths.

Seungmin doesn't shame you or even scold you but he does lightly bump his fist to your head making you let out a strained laugh.

"Why are you so worried about this? Is Hyunjin a bad guy?"

"No... he's actually a really sweet guy, even for an alpha.."

"Okay, and how is this situation any different then when you were dating someone else?"

You stop for a moment thinking with pursed lips.

"I guess it's... not? I just... you didn't see the look on Minho's face, he looked like I had just murdered his cat."

"That's a bit extreme," Seungmin says with a chuckle as he fixes a strand of hair from your face. "Either way, who you sleep with or don't sleep, whether he knows or doesn't, is your choice and only you for you to judge. If you say he's a good guy, then trust yourself."

He was right. Why should you be so afraid of what Minho thought? As much as you valued his opinion as a friend, it was just as much you're right to sleep with whoever and whenever as you were single, not tied down to anyone. You lay your head on Seungmins shoulder for a moment.

"I should've told you everything yesterday but I knew you were busy with-"

"I am never too busy for you, okay? Call, text, send Jisung to my door with a message from you- actually don't do that I don't want him at my place," Seungmin says as his face scrunches in disgust at Jisung who sits next to you about to protest.

The two banter back and forth for a moment making you laugh, feeling lighter about everything. They keep you company until the others emerge from their dance class.

Jeongin yapped Hyunjin's ear off in those 10 minutes they had for a break as Felix shielded his face in hands. He could feel Minhos eyes throwing daggers at Hyunjin's head.

Hyunjin had learned in those 10 minutes that Minho and you had been friends since childhood, with Minho having had a crush on you long before you presented as an omega and him as an alpha. He couldn't help but wonder why the two of you didn't ever get together. As far as he could tell, the two of you seemed a likely match. While he did know Minho well enough to pass judgement, it was clear the Alpha had an affinity for taking care of the people around him, even if it was as simple as helping someone get a dance move down correctly or making sure no one was too worn down.

Even the bite in the way he joked was so similar to you, it was playful and harmless but could be taken very different if aimed at the right person. There was no denying how good looking he was either. From his build and stature despite not being very tall, there was an energy about him that asserted that dominance intentional or not.

Hyunjin had decided it was best to not let Minho on any further information about the nature of your relationship. If Minho wanted to know anything then he would have to ask you.

The class continued on for another hour, if Minho went back to his cool and collect facade for the remainder of class. Felix watched every movement for Minho waiting for the moment he snapped but he never did. Once the class was over, students trickled out slowly until it was just Jeongin, Hyunjin, Minho and Felix.

As much as it hurt Minho to do this, he couldn't deny the talent that Hyunjin had. The two exchanged numbers so they could work on a possible separate choreography to film. Hyunjin kept his cool so long as Minho did. As the four of them began to make their way to the door, Minho's stomach turned at the idea of facing you.

When he saw you sitting on that bench beside Jisung and Seungmin, it seemed to all melt away. You held out an electrolyte bottle to Minho who gleefully took it. Hyunjin trotted behind him with a smile on his face.

"I'd hug you but I'm soaked in sweat," Hyunjin said as he stood in front of you.

"Oh it's fine don't worry about it! So, uh, I'm guessing I don't have to introduce you two to each other?" You ask looking between Minho and Hyunjin.

"We're pretty well acquainted now," Minho says a bit stiff but Hyunjin just laughs. You attempt to change the topic.

"How come you didn't tell me you were a dance major?" You asked nervously looking between Minho and him.

"You never asked," Hyunjin shrugs as he drinks his water, "I'm not a dance major though."

Minho, Felix and Jeongin cock their head in confusion. He laughs at their reactions before speaking again, "I'm an illustratrative art major, painting is more my forte but dancing is my outlet."

Felix chimes in, "Was that tattoo your design then?"

"What tattoo?" You ask confused but Hyunjin just lets out a soft laugh as he nods to answer Felix's question.

Hyunjin puts his bag down to peel his shirt up revealing the rose tattoo the starts between his shoulder blades and trails down further beneath the fabric in vines and thorns. Unconsciously you reach out to touch it which makes Hyunjin shiver and takes everything in Minho to not rip your hand away.

"I didn't see this before," You murmur in awe of the space it takes up on his back.

"Kinda hard to with when you were preoccupied with other things," Hyunjin says with a wolfish grin as he pulls his shirt back on as he watches the flush creep onto your cheeks and watching you awkwardly laugh.

Minho clears his throat grabbing your wrist abruptly, "We should get going, have somewhere to be in a few but we'll see you guys on wednesday."

"Minho, we don't have anything-"

"Yes, we do, remember." He says through clenched teeth before continuing to drag you away from the group.

"Still on for Friday?" Hyunjin's calls out as he watches the Alphas drag you away.

"Yes!" You shout from over your shoulder as Minho throws his arm around your shoulder to keep you from looking back.

Hyunjin watches feeling satisfied by successfully getting under Minho's skin. He bids his goodbye to the others but before he does Felix runs up to him asking to exchange numbers, you know, incase co-captain things come up. Hyunjin is more than happy to exchange numbers with the pretty blonde omega as he bids goodbye for the last time.

"This is the urgent business you were talking about?" You ask sarcastically as you sit in the quiet boba shop booth with Minho across from you.

It was your normal hangout spot but it was also ritual for the two of you to come here every 1st day back of the new semester. It was a cat themed boba shop and it was truthfully one of Minho's favorite places to be, especially with you.

"Yes, they close at 8pm, I didn't want us to miss our chance... how were your classes today?" He asks looking up at you attempting to change the topic from his insistent ways of getting you as far away from Hyunjin as possible.

"Good, my professors are pretty nice. I'm writing my first novel this semester too."

"Will you read it to me when you're ready?" He asks.

"Of course, who else will I read it to?" He internally responds with a scowl at the thoughts of you reading it to Hyunjin.

The two of sit in a comfortable silence listening to the sounds of the people chattering around you.

"What are you doing with Hyunjin on Friday?" Minho is the first to speak up. Likely plotting how to disrupt those plans.

"Not too sure yet... How did you like him?" diverting the question back to Minho.

"Seems nice." He says shortly, unable to meet your gaze. He wouldn't admit that despite his flirty advances towards you, he liked him enough to consider him someone worth getting to know. You hum in acknowledgment. "The lunch you made me was good, thank you."

"You're welcome, nothing compares to your cooking but I try," You say as you stretch up in your seat feeling the exhaustion of the day wearing on you. Minho takes the signal and grabs both your belongings ready to head out.

The warm feeling that spread through your chest as you can't help feeling thankful how easy Minho picks up on your body language, almost better than you can. The drive to your apartment is quiet as the two of you talk about the coming day of other classes tomorrow.

"Oh that reminds me, Saturday night, are you free?" You perk up in your seat.

"I should be, something you want to do?"

"I promised Seungmin that we'd go to his nerdy film marathon, please come with me?" You ask jutting out your bottom lip, while giving him your best puppy eyes.

"Mmmmm what's in it for me?" Minho would say yes regardless but he wanted to see what you would say.

"I'll make your favorite cookies but... i'll make them into little cats." You say with a straight face.

"Deal." He mimics your face until he sees that smile on your face making his heart do a flip.

"Perfect, I'll see you tomorrow," You say quickly climb out of his car before he got a chance to say anything else.

He watches as walk off into your building waving back at him, meeting Hyunjin was like setting a fire under him. He was more determined than ever to get you to see him as someone who could be there for, love you, to be your mate. He would stop at nothing now to be the one that puts that smile on your face.

why do so many people act like lestat has better morals or is nicer then Armand in some way? there is nothing in the books that suggest this, Lestat and Armand have committed like the same exact crimes (even the sexual ones.) have fairly similar philosophies on murder (lestat tries to only kill criminals cuz he doesn’t want to take innocent life, Armand tries to only kill people who want to die and would otherwise take there own lives bcus he doesn’t want to take the life of someone who wants to live) Lestats moral stance on killing is more brutal arguably then Armand’s bcus he chooses to kill criminals cuz he likes chasing down his prey and tormenting them it’s fun for him, and Lestat finds maintaining his criminals only rule very hard bcus he “loves innocent blood it tastes better” which is fun. Armand sometimes brutally kills or hunts too and definitely drinks a lot of innocent blood but more often then not tries to make his killing as sparse and merciful as possible. Literally the only evidence at all that Lestat is a better person then Armand is the fact that most of the books are narrated by Lestat who is always informing the audience of his perspective while committing his crimes while Armand never explains anything he ever does even in his own book. But taking “we know more about what lestat thinks” to mean “lestat is a better person then Armand cuz he’s easier to understand” is shallow and biased imo.

But again, Lestat and Armand both torture people, they both are physically violent and scary, both are abusive, both are highly motivated by histories of trauma and being crazy, etc. they are like the same amount of bad 😭 did I miss the thing that told everyone that lestat has a kind heart and Armand doesn’t 💀. I think people just sympathize easier with Lestat in the show bcus he has a really sad backstory we r informed of, but idk bcus we r also informed of Armand’s very sad backstory that In my opinion is easier to conceptualize as capable of breaking someone’s brain to the point where they casually enact torture and live in a constant state of violence. the worst of Lestat’s trauma happens to him when he is like (in the show) 37? 💀 which is still terrible, obviously, but man. I don’t see how he is more sympathetic then Armand😭
