Napoleon and Sugar Production and Trade
A little bit about how the sugar industry was transformed during the Napoleonic Wars. Specifically, how sugar beet substituted and replaced sugar cane.
From Robert M. Harveson, History of sugarbeets, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (source)
“Sugar was only obtained from the tropical sugar cane and was prohibitively expensive for most Europeans. During the early 1800’s most sugar was obtained from the West Indies. After supplies were cut off by the English blockade of continental Europe during the Napoleonic Wars, the demand for sugar grew throughout Europe. Napoleon encouraged new research with sugar beets, and between 1810 and 1815, over 79,000 acres were put into production with more than 300 small factories being built in France.”
From R. N. Dowling, Sugar Beet and Beet Sugar:
“Napoleon I, brought real life into the new industry. As a farsighted statesman, he recognized the great advantages connected with a future beet sugar industry that would produce at home all the sugar needed by his people. For this reason he at once, by a decree of 1812, appropriated 100,000 hectares, or 247,100 acres, exclusively for the cultivation of sugar beets and 1,000,000 francs for experiments in connection with beet raising and sugar extraction.”
The trade war:
“The interest of Napoleon was due to the continental blockade that excluded all products manufactured in England and her colonies from the European markets. As a consequence the price of cane sugar rose to an extraordinary height: it was more than 30 cents per pound in the period from 1807 to 1815. Under such circumstances the erection of beet sugar factories was a very profitable investment of capital and it is, therefore, not to be wondered at that in France, as early as 1812 some 40 factories were in operation, working up 98,813 tons of beets obtained from 16,758 acres, and yielding a total output of 3,300,000 Ibs. of sugar. For the first time in the history beet sugar came to compete with the tropical product. From very modest beginnings in the first quarter of the nineteenth century the beet sugar industry grew to the enormous dimensions of today, crowding out cane sugar from the markets of the European continent and successfully competing with the tropical product in many other countries.”
(From R. N. Dowling)
Long-term impact—Sugar beet today:
“Of the current world production of more than 130 million metric tons of sugar, about 35% comes from sugar beet and 65% from sugar cane. In the USA, about 50-55% of the domestic production of about 8.4 million metric tons derives from sugar beet.”

Heya, Tumblr! It’s been a while. XD
I do think Casper ‘95 is the best film based on the Harvey characters. Sure, the screenplay has some flaws and the jokes don't always work, but it does have an engaging overall story, top-notch voice acting, excellent production design, and a great score to boot. Plus, I think this was J.J. Abrams' first big success given that Spielberg brought him onboard to rewrite it. True, he was uncredited, but given the screenplay he was handed, he gave the film the dramatic boost it needed.
Figures that I think it deserves a continuation. I've had this in the back of my head for a while (As is the case a lot. XD), but I really wanted to get all of these out.
The basic story I have in mind is that Whipstaff has been abandoned again for some 50 years since the Harveys left and Kat pursued a career to take up her dad's mantle. 50 years after the 1995 film, Little Dot, Little Audrey and Little Lotta stumble across Casper and his uncles Stretch, Stinkie and Fatso around Christmastime, and they befriend them. Dr. Kathleen Harvey also returns to Friendship as one of Dot's dads has called her over to investigate. Casper and his uncles have a small grudge over Kat for leaving Whipstaff, but overtime, Kat regains Casper's trust and he eventually gets his uncles to do the same. Obviously, they don't love each other anymore because... well, that's just ewwy. No. Just no.
During a Fair scene, Casper stumbles across another ghost on a Fairground built where the local insane asylum used to be - the ghost of his father J.T. McFadden. Overtime, Casper tries to get his dad to remember who he was, with some help from Kat.
But there's another reason why Dot, Audrey and Lotta are drawn to Whipstaff. In this universe, Audrey and her sister Zoe have a familial connection to Carrigan Crittenden (Great-nieces.), and thusly are entitled to Whipstaff. What's more is that the Crittenden lines has ties to the McFadden line, and Audrey, Zoe and their mother are some of the last surviving people related in some sense to Casper as a result. What I think will happen is that a direct relative (A grandfather?) will want Whipstaff and the Lazarus for themselves and will try to kill Audrey and Zoe to get it, so they kidnap Zoe to get her to reveal where the Lazarus is and what it does. This will result in Casper, Kat and the 3 gals going to save Zoe and her and Audrey confronting their relative. He dies and becomes a ghost, but instead of having him cross over to the Afterworlds, he is exorcised there.
In the end, Audrey, Zoe and their mom move in to Whipstaff to live with Casper and his uncles, his dad regains his memory, he and Kat rekindle their friendship, and all of them, including Dot and Lotta, become a sort of group of friends. On Christmas Eve, Casper says it'll be fun while it lasts, and even when the next family comes around, he'll still have his own to keep him company. Just then, Casper's dad finds the Primordial soup formula for the Lazarus and gives it to him. He gets excited and goes to tell everyone about it, ending the film.
The idea for the Harvey Girls for Casper Returns is that they will be based upon their Harvey Girls Forever counterparts, henceforth why I drew them here. I know Harvey Girls Forever already has their own Casper, and I do think they did a great job with that version! This one here will exist as an separate world, so you won't see any statue of Harvey E. Harveson since he won't exist in this world.
I think Audrey and Lotta will act as sort of big-sister figures to Casper, Audrey especially since she'll discover her relations to the McFadden line. Dot and Casper might have some affection for each other and date for a small while. Yeah, screw it. I like it, it's a fun crack ship and it'll still be a little bit before Wendy comes into play, though not too long.
For this drawing, I wanted to visualize how Kat and Casper's uncles would look with him and the 3 gals. I drew Stretch too small, so I had to resize him. XD Still, I think I did a'ight. I think adult Kat looks cool in Katie Rice's style too.
As far as writing goes, I want J.J. to come back to produce and help with the main story, but I want Phillip LaZebnik to do the actual screenplay. The Prince of Egypt was really good, and I want to see more stuff from him. I could probably bring in Guillermo del Toro in to co-write/produce too since he did Trollhunters and is doing a film of it soon. I'd also bring in the Brendan Hay to co-write since he helped develop the versions of Dot, Audrey and Lotta I want to integrate.
As you expected, I want Burton to produce as will everything I want to make, but I especially want the Spielberg family on board. Steven will probably have a good excuse not to, because he'll be dead by the time I get to produce this, in which case may he rest well.
As far as directing goes, I think Peter Ramsey. He directed Rise of the Guardians, but he also has some experience in live-action doing some second-unit work for John Singleton. Plus, he was an artist on Casper '95.
That's pretty much all I've got for now. I'll try to add more as time goes onward, but if you like what I've got so far, feel free to give some feedback if you want.
-S.

╰☆╮ BRANDON ARREAGA ─ DARCY HARVESON identifies as CISMALE and uses HE/HIM pronouns. they’re a SINGER/PRODUCER, and they’re only NINETEEN ! they’re said to be ATTENTIVE, but also RECLUSIVE. i guess that’s why they’re known as the EMOTIONAL WEIRDO in the tabloids.

Hi, lol, I'm Breeze, I live in the CST area, and I'm 18, plus a new graduate ((: yes I had to add that bc I actually made it lol. here's my eboy Darce, love him pls.
Darcy "Darce" Grace was expected to be a baby girl, but obviously his parents were in denial bc lmao look. His mom was the most loving and tender one if the family, his dad just like 'whatevs', a heARtlESs wREnCh. Darcy didn't really stay underneath his father a lot and he is a momma's boy and he isnt ashamed.
Darcy doesn't like mentioning his past that much because it's a "forgive and forget" type of thing when it comes to his past. Dont bother asking him about it because he will go off on you unintentionally because of undealt internal feelings. Yes, he is an emotional wreck.
Hes such a introvert that his Mom calls him weekly to make sure 'he did something socialable'. His parents do happen to be divorced and hes like over it. He does notice anything and everything. Darcy can be that bitch sometimes so dont get on his bad side hunty.
he's a workaholic, he's quiet which is why he notices anything and everything about people, but sometimes that gets him in trouble because he thinks he knows shit.
I dont know what else :/ still developing so just come to my ims and I'll throw something at you as far as plots. k, bye. xo

“Woman Carrying $13,000 Among Hundreds Interned,” Toronto Star. September 30, 1939. Page 02. --- Petawawa Camp Being Prepared to Accommodate Alien Enemies --- R.C.M.P. Is Active --- Several hundred Germans, including some naturalized Canadians, are now under arrest, held at internment camps at the Quebec citadel, Fort Henry at Kingston, and Kanaski, Alta. Since war was declared, the special branch of the Toronto police and the R.C.M.P. have rounded up ‘scores’ of Germans in Toronto. All were taken first to Stanley Barracks for detention and some were transferred later to Fort Henry, it was learned.
One of those arrested was a woman said to have had $1,000 in cash and $12,000 in travellers’ cheques in her possession.
The Petawawa military camp used during the last war for training of Canadian troops, is being prepared for use as a huge internment camp. Today Ottawa announced internment camp prisoners are to be given an opportunity of proving they are entitled to their liberty.
Now the government has ordered all aliens of enemy nationality to register with the R.C.M.P. at once.
Five hundred and sixty cities and towns in Canada have been designated as points for registration, the Canada Gazette discloses today.
Members of the R.C.M.P. at the designated points will set as registrars and provincial police in places where there are no R.C.M.P. offices. Commissioner S.T. Wood of the R.C.M.P. is registrar-general of enemy aliens.
The interned people in the concentration camps are of two classes. The first are those whose petition for liberation will be heard by county court judges, and the second class, interned under regulation 21 of the Defence of Canada regulations, who will have to come before the new advisory committee, headed by Judge F. L. Smiley, and including W. P. J. O’Meara, assistant under-secretary of state, and Jacques Portier, solicitor of the transport department.
R.C.M.P. Arrested Most Most of the aliens in the concentration camps at Quebec, Kingston and Kananaski were arrested by the R.C.M.P., acting under the minister of justice, but, once interned, they are under the military authorities, specifically under Brig.-Gen. E. de B. Panet, Montreal, commissioner of internment. ---- Over 20 in Maritimes Halifax, Sept. 30 (CP) - More than a score of aliens ave been arrested in the maaritimes since Canada declared war on Germany, and they are now in detention camps, Royal Canadian Mounted Police said today.
Sixteen have been arrested in Nova Scotia and one Prince Edward Island. Six New Brunswick arrests were made.
All those detained were unnaturalized residents of German nationality. Some have been sent to Quebec City and the remainder to Sussex, N. B., where an alien reception camp has been established.
‘Several others’ signed undertakings to conform with certain wartime regulations, including periodical reporting to police.
R.C.M.P. officers make the arrests and then hand over the aliens to military authorities. --- Now in Fort Henry Montreal, Sept. 30 - (CP) - Since the outbreak of hostilities ‘about 120 men’ have been interned by the Montreal division of the R.C.M.P., Inspector C.W. Harveson of the R.C.M.P.’s secret service organization said.
The R.C.M.P. began activities against enemy aliens the day war was declared when 30 patrols of R.C.M.P. officers and troopers, ex-servicemen and trusted civilians detained nearly 60 men. Arrests have dropped off since then, police said, and recently one or two a day has been the limit.
First held in the former general post-office in downtown Montreal, the enemy aliens later were transferred to the provincial police cells. They were returned to the post-office for a time before being taken to historic St. Helen’s Island, betwene the island of Montreal and the south shore of the St. Lawrence river. They since have been sent to Fort Henry, Kingston, Ont.
Inspector Harvison said that in addition to the men interned about 300 other persons were detained or taken into temporary custody at their homes, offices, stores or other places for questioning and then released.
Fear of sabotage is said to be one of the chief reasons that prompted the government to intern suspected persons. There have been some complaints that several loyal persons have been interned. These will have an opportunity to prove they are entitled to their freedom.
