"Once in Hull, the [Communist] internees spent considerable time trying to get out, sending multiple petitions to the government, even though many petitions were initially intercepted by camp commandant, Major Green. Otherwise, it was as an individual that the internee appeared before the consulting committee that would hear the appeal of the internee as to whether he might be released, and make a recommendation thereupon to the minister of Justice. The internees and their lawyers often did not receive all the information presented to the committee by the RCMP. Other than being accused of being a member of the Party, which many internees chose to deny, new grounds for the internment kept appearing during questioning by the consulting committee members. Sometimes, these appeal sessions degenerated into wide-ranging political discussions about war and peace, where internees might be expected to name associates in the Party. In short, the burden of proof fell to the defendant rather than the state. Usually, the official offence for which he was being held was membership in an outlawed group, that is, guilt by association. Bill Walsh wrote to his wife, Anne, about the nature of his experience with the consulting committee.
The very star chamber nature of the procedure had a stultifying effect upon me… Seeing the indifference written all over their faces at the moment that I am literally turning myself inside-out for them to see and understand; all the time, growing consciousness that your happiness, my freedom… leans so heavily upon such a method of dispensing ‘justice’; it was only with an effort that I could force myself to continue.
Internee Kent Rowley, in fact, refused to participate in a closed hearing wherein his legal rights were denied. Rowley spent two and a half years either imprisoned or interned, never to actually hear any charges read against him."

If you wanted to know more about the saga of protests and resistance against Canada’s open-pit copper mining in Panama:

Headline by: The Associated Press. “Panama reaches 20-year deal with Canadian copper mine.” As republished at ABC News. 8 March 2023.
---
An excerpt and explanation:
In Panama, a dispute has emerged of a type that is common to countries in Central and South America: a huge transnational company has invested in the country’s resource wealth, resulting in a conflict over suitable payments to the government that draws in officials from the company’s nation of origin in defence of corporate profits. In this case, the company in question is First Quantum Minerals, a mining giant with lucrative investments across the Global South -- and the country of origin is Canada.
This summer [2022], Panamanians rose up in nationwide protests against the neoliberal status quo imposed on the country by the government of Laurentino Cortizo. Beginning on July 1, these protests brought together diverse groups including teachers, students, trade unionists, farmers, and Indigenous organizations [...]. The causes of the summer 2022 protests go back decades and help illustrate the dynamics of the current conflict between First Quantum (and their backers in Ottawa) and the Panamanian state.
Throughout the 1990s, Canada aggressively pushed for states in Central and South America to adopt neoliberal reforms that would permit more foreign investment and fewer regulations for transnational companies. [...]
Several protest movements emerged in Panama in the 2010s in opposition to the effects of free market reforms generally and the predominance of Canadian mining specifically. At the heart of these resistance movements is the Canadian-owned Cobre Panamá mine, which is the largest foreign investment in the country [...].
---
Cobre Panamá was owned by the Toronto-headquartered Inmet Mining until 2013, at which point it was acquired by Vancouver-based First Quantum. In 2011, the Martinelli government attempted to limit the Indigenous Ngäbe-Buglé nation’s rights to autonomy and self-government in order to grant mining companies access to minerals on their land. Meanwhile, Martinelli repealed a law that prevented foreign governments from investing in the mining sector -- a gift to Canada’s Inmet Mining, which at the time was seeking financing from the sovereign wealth funds of Singapore and South Korea.
These moves sparked protests that continued into 2012. Martinelli responded to demands for the annulment of mining and hydroelectric concessions on Indigenous territory with violence by dispatching riot police. The police killed one protestor, injured thirty-two, and detained forty. The protestors did not budge; instead, they blocked the entrances to Cobre Panamá and another mine owned by the Canada’s Petaquilla Minerals. Eventually Martinelli relented and vowed not to approve mining projects on or near Ngäbe-Buglé lands.’
---
During the 2011-2012 conflict, nobody in the Canadian government issued a single statement on the matter. When protestors took to the streets again in 2022, Ottawa released a statement that totally omitted the reasons behind the uprising.
Following the economic shock of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Cortizo government declared that Panama’s recovery would rely on incentivizing foreign investment in the mining sector. Social movements have by and large rejected this new arrangement due to the history of corrupt collaboration between state officials and foreign companies and the weakness of environmental protections.
---
For example, in April 2022 the Panama Worth More Without Mining Movement -- which arose in opposition to the Canadian-owned Cobre Panamá mine -- released a report that found over 200 “serious” breaches of environmental commitments by the project managers, including the breaking of reforestation promises, “the felling of 876 hectares… in an area of high biodiversity and international importance,” and “the discharge of waste from the tailings tank into natural bodies of water without official endorsement.”
Following the summer 2022 protests, the Cortizo government announced plans to reform the mining sector by instituting greater regulations on foreign companies. In the meantime, the Panamanian state and First Quantum were in the process of negotiating a renewed contract. Jason Simpson, CEO of Canada’s Orla Mining (which is hoping to begin extraction at its Cerro Quema gold project), said, “The biggest story in Panama is Cobre Panamá, so as the government works through their renewed contract law for First Quantum’s asset there, that’ll take priority… We’ll be patient for that to be resolved and then we hope to get working on construction in Panama.”
The negotiations for the renewal of the Cobre Panamá contract began in September 2021. The two parties agreed that First Quantum would provide Panama with between 12 and 16 percent of its gross profit, a new rate that would replace the previous two percent revenue royalty. [...]
---
Much like Ottawa jumped to the defence of Centerra Gold following Kyrgyzstan’s nationalization of the Kumtor gold mine last year, the Trudeau government has taken a keen interest in Cobre Panamá and, according to the unnamed Reuters source, is actively backing the mining company’s position. Given Canada’s long history of support for neoliberal reforms and transnational investment in Central and South America, Ottawa’s support for First Quantum in these negotiations should come as no surprise.

The Ukrainian Labour Farmer Temple Association (ULFTA) was established in Winnipeg in 1918 as an association of cultural societies and community halls and the Ukrainian Social Democratic Party of Canada (USDPC). By 1928 it had 167 branches across Canada. Labour Temples and other associated halls existed in cities like Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Toronto (1921),[1] as well as in rural communities in the Ukrainian Block Settlements. As no form of public medicare was available at the time, ULFTA founded the Workers Benevolent Association (WBA) in Winnipeg in 1922, with branches and membership rapidly spreading throughout Canada; it even extended its membership to all workers, irrespective of ethnic origin. In 1940, the ULFTA was banned under the wartime Defence of Canada Regulations, and a few of its leaders and journalists were interned. Several Labour Temples were confiscated by the federal government as "enemy property" with several being sold off.[2]
In 1940, the ULFTA underwent a name change and became the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians (AUUC).[3] Few post World War II immigrants joined the AUUC as most were opposed to the Soviet Union and Communism. However, the AUUC has a legacy of senior's homes, children's camps, monuments and museums to Ukrainian literary giants, most notably the monument to the Ukrainian poet Lesya Ukrainka, a gift from Soviet Ukraine, on the grounds of the University of Saskatchewan in 1976. In addition, the AUUC still runs programs such as Edmonton's Trembita dance ensemble.
#auuc is still around & has published statements on the war if ur curious#id characterize them as fairly evenhanded#this article also doesnt rly go into any extent abt their relations w soviet ukraine for decades

CBC launched its highly revealing defence in an email reply to Jeff Winch, a retired professor at Humber College who had filed four complaints about CBC’s coverage with the CRTC, Canada’s telecoms regulator.
“The Hamas attack was referred to by the reporter as ‘vicious,’” Winch wrote in one complaint, citing an instance in early November on CBC Radio. “Why is it when Hamas attacks there is a toxic adjective attached but when Israel kills 8 times the number of people (including babies) no such adjectives are used?”
‘The events…are very different’
CBC’s senior manager of journalistic standards Nancy Waugh responded in a Dec. 5 email that Winch shared with The Breach:
You wrote that CBC reporters refer to the October 7 attacks as ‘murderous,’ ‘vicious,’ or ‘brutal,’ but don’t use the same words to describe Israeli attacks that kill Palestinians. Different words are used because although both result in death and injury, the events they describe are very different. The raid saw Hamas gunmen stream through the border fence and attack Israelis directly with firearms, knives and explosives. Gunmen chased down festival goers, assaulted kibbutzniks then shot them, fought hand to hand, and threw grenades. The attack was brutal, often vicious, and certainly murderous. Bombs dropped from thousands of feet and artillery shells lofted into Gaza from kilometers away result in death and destruction on a massive scale, but it is carried out remotely. The deadly results are unseen by those who caused them and the source unseen by those [who] suffer and die. It’s a different kind of event and is described differently as ‘intensive,’ ‘unrelenting,’ and ‘punishing,’ raining death and destruction on one of the most densely populated places on earth…They are different stories, and we have tried to describe both accurately and vividly.
The former professor Winch called this “a terrible answer.”
“I don’t think the language should have to do with the comfort of the person delivering death,” he told The Breach in an interview. “It’s about the devastation and destruction and violence that’s happening to the victims.”
[...]
Winch, one of the creators of the oral history project Voices of Palestine, said he’s been concerned with the Canadian media’s coverage of this issue since 2002, when Israel killed 22 civilians in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank.
“I remember thinking something was wrong with the news. I remember thinking the pictures and the words were not lining up for me,” he said. “I started reading and the more I read, the more it became clear that this whole conflict had been flipped upside down.”
Winch said he believes the Canadian media has inaccurately portrayed the Israeli state as the victim of “savage Arab terrorists” by systematically distorting the context about the state’s history of military occupation of the Palestinian territories.

US eases restrictions on exports of space-related goods to allies
The Biden administration relaxed export restrictions for US commercial space companies to supply certain satellites and goods to allies and partners, according to Reuters.
The changes are designed to make it easier for the growing US commercial space industry to expand sales and to protect national security and foreign policy interests.
US space companies like Elon Musk’s SpaceX and large defence contractors with space divisions, such as Lockheed Martin, L3Harris Technologies and Boeing, could benefit from the new regulations. The updates would also enhance the US ability to “broaden and deepen international partnerships, to grow our economy and to collaborate on mutual space priorities,” Don Graves, deputy secretary of the Department of Commerce, stated.
As the diversity of commercial activity in space grows, these rules will reduce the burden for US industry to continue innovating and leading in the space sector.
The rules could help the US advance the trilateral AUKUS security pact between the UK, US and Australia, struck in 2021 in response to China’s growing power in the Indo-Pacific.
Certain less sensitive parts and components of satellites and spacecraft would no longer require licences to be shipped to more than 40 countries including Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea and most EU member states. Besides, the Commerce Department would waive licensing requirements for the least sensitive products, such as electrical connectors, for most of the world, but not for Russia and China, the source claimed.
After publishing the 2019 notice SpaceX urged the US to consider ways to “streamline export control regulations for the US commercial space industry to lower administrative burdens, decrease regulatory compliance costs and increase exports thereby bolstering the US space commercial sector and industrial base.”
The relaxations could expand SpaceX’s overseas presence as it develops Starship, a next-generation reusable rocket. The Starship agreement could also pave the way for a larger SpaceX presence in Australia.

"The RCMP tried to place plants among the internees, false prisoners whose mission was to spy on the other internees. Patrick Lenihan reports that it happened twice, although this author has uncovered only one occasion. This involved a man who arrived from Montreal in March, 1942 named Paul-Henri Robert. Some of the French-Canadian internees knew Robert. Jean Bourget and Joseph Duchesne had known him in a Montreal group that defended the unemployed called Ouvriers Unis. His behaviour with this organization, always calling for violent demonstrations and confrontations with the police, led some of the internees to believe that he was an agent provocateur, working for the authorities. If Robert was sent to spy, he was not very effective for he even admitted that he had once been an RCMP officer, who had been mistakenly sent to Hull rather than Petawawa. Robert shared a cell with Jacques Villeneuve and described to his cell-mate the circumstances of his most recent arrest which led him to Hull. Robert claimed he had been arrested for making anti-British remarks while in a tavern. The story sounded strange, at least in the opinion of Bourget, Duchesne, Villeneuve, Rodolphe Majeau, and Roméo Duval, who wrote to Major Green on March 25, 1942, demanding that Green get rid of Robert since they believed he was a stool-pigeon, a spy, a plant. Green refused to acquiesce to the demands, maintaining that he had no idea who Robert was. The internees made life miserable for Robert, isolating him, and threatening to beat him. Was this an instance of the Hull internees being paranoid about someone they did not like from the outside world? Possibly, but when Major Green [camp commandant who liaised with the RCMP to report on internee conduct] was transferred to the POW camp for German soldiers at Bowmanville, near Oshawa, Ontario, on April 15, 1942, the very same day, Robert was transferred to Petawawa. The whole incident is unclear but shows, nevertheless, that the internees, at the very least, were concerned about spies among their ranks.
...
A phenomenon readily detectable was the censorship to which the internees were subjected. Letters from family were intercepted and delivered. Mention of news from the outside world, including actions being taken by lawyers on behalf of internees, was removed from letters. The internees were not allowed to use terms such as ‘anti-fascist’ to describe themselves, nor were they allowed to refer to Hull as a ‘concentration camp’.
Censorship was a regular part of military life during the war. Soldiers were required to be circumspect in describing their whereabouts or activities, and their communications both to and from were subject to censorship. Applied to the internees, however, censorship was just one more limitation of their civil rights, which provided dubious military benefits, at best. Sometimes, correspondents of internees were objects of investigation; this was especially the case for soldiers who were sons of the internees.
According to a Cabinet order of May, 1940, the federal government was responsible for social assistance provided by municipalities to the families of internees, but this did not mean much if municipalities refused to provide this assistance, or if the amounts were too little. The trust companies working for the Trustee of Enemy Properties froze assets of the internees and their families. The internees were not permitted visits by their families, always an object of contestation by the internees. Nonetheless, Jenny Freed did lead a delegation of wives, who hitchhiked from Montreal to the Hull prison, and caused quite a commotion when the men were able to talk to the women, who were standing outside the prison walls.
In October, 1941, the authorities began permitting conjugal visits to Hull. John McNeil’s wife from Winnipeg was the first to visit her husband. In November, 1941, other visits followed, and they soon become typical, even if not too intimate since the visits were limited to thirty minutes in the presence of guards. Visits from others were also controlled, including even one official visit from the Premier of Quebec, Adélard Godbout.
Godbout was allowed to meet Colonel Sherwood, commandant of the Ottawa region, and Major Green, during a visit in Hull in October, 1941. While Godbout was permitted to inspect the quarters of the guards, the Army did not allow Godbout, accompanied by local politicians from Hull, inside the prison to visit the internees’ quarters. His only contact with the internees that was permitted was listening to a few songs sung by a choral group of the internees."

Empowering Your Mental Health with Canadian Jiu-Jitsu
Everyone knows that staying active is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Whether it’s a daily walk or participating in a sport, keeping your body moving helps improve circulation, digestion, and energy levels. Exercise can also have many positive impacts on our mental health. Staying active is also proven to improve mood, concentration, and self-confidence. When it comes to improving both your physical and mental health, there’s no better sport than Canadian Jiu-Jitsu. Here are some ways hitting the mats can help keep your body and mind healthy.
Stress Relief
We may be known as one of the friendliest countries in the world, but that doesn’t mean Canadians don’t experience their fair share of stress. Stress can weigh heavily on not just our minds but our bodies as well. Sustained stress can lower the body’s immune system, interrupt sleep, and affect our diet. There are many ways to deal with stress, but one of the most effective ways is to get moving. Fitness activities are extremely helpful in reducing stress levels and releasing pent-up frustrations. One of the many benefits of Canadian Jiu-Jitsu is the diverse range of fitness activities it entails. This sport requires strength, stamina, focus, and flexibility. It works your core and cardio, builds muscle and endurance, and hones your focus and agility. At All Vs. All, we know is that while your body is your main piece of equipment when practicing Jiu-Jitsu, the right clothing and gear will support your movements, keep you cool, and help you fully engage in the sport. Whether it’s the perfect rash guard to regulate temperature or an impressive kimono, equipping yourself with a few key supporting elements can elevate your experience on the mats and give you the stress relief you need.
Laser Focus
Martial arts require commitment, practice, awareness, and determination. One of the most rewarding yet difficult requirements of martial arts ability to focus like a laser. Focusing on your breathing, body, your opponent’s movements, and tuning out every other surrounding distraction. Life can be incredibly busy if not overwhelming, but learning to hone that focus out on the mats and build that skill can help us focus outside of the gym, too. With improved focus and concentration, we can be more productive in our personal lives, less bothered by the distractions of the day, and more self-aware. Our mental health is supported by our ability to multitask without becoming overwhelmed when we can exercise those focusing skills in all areas of our lives.
Community Minded
Although many of the martial arts practiced in Canada focus on individual training and one-on-one competition, there is also a great sense of community among martial artists. The Canadian Jiu-Jitsu community is a strong, diverse, and energetic collective of athletic-minded individuals with a passion for fitness, self-defence, and positive mental health. Being able to work on individual fitness goals while also feeling included in a larger community can boost self-confidence and help us strive for achievement among our peers. If you visit us online to sport an AVA hoodie, it’s not just about looking great on the way to the gym. It’s a way to participate in a community of Jiu-Jitsu practitioners with like-minded goals.
Balancing our busy lives and our mental health can be an ongoing challenge. Our team at All Vs. All are here to help Canadian Jiu-Jitsu martial artists stay active, set fitness goals, and participate in a community to stay physically and mentally healthy every day.
