Book Two, Parseltongue
Tumblr media
After a year that could only be described as normal - by Hogwarts standards at least - Harry goes back to the Dursleys for the summer, and comes back to school at the start of term changed in ways his friends can’t hope to understand. Students start getting petrified at Hogwarts, and all signs are pointing to the boy that already has blood on his hands. Also there’s a giant snake roaming the pipes.
What could possibly go wrong?

Hi! Just wanted to say the latest chapter is lovely & amazing & sweet & had me smiling the whole time! I absolutely love your characterisation of everyone, especially Draco, so it was so so lovely to return to this world & to his thoughts!! with his best friend and crush at malfoy manor no less! All the yearning is already off to a great start hehe I am so excited for the rest of book 5!
Wanted to ask you how has it been for you to write this new book and volume? Has your writing process changed since when you’d first begun taking on a long form project like this?
& also are there any moments or surprises in this book that you’re especially excited about?
sending so much love & gratitude for you and your incredible works 💓
Thank you so much! This is really encouraging, I so appreciate it.
Inasmuch as I can use this metaphor without having kids myself, I sort of see each of the books as a different child. The first one flew out in basically a few weeks of very intensive writing, and it was a total dream — plot, pacing, symbolism, major beats, all fell into place basically without effort. The character stuff was the hardest, as I've written about before, but even then, the glorious part of writing beginnings is it's the most energy you'll ever have for a project, so the lows were pretty soft lows. Book 2, in contrast, I had to drag kicking and screaming by its ankle from under the bottommost mattress of my brain. It's one of my least favorite books (tone problem; COS has killer plot/setting/ingredients for a YA novel, but it's stuck in the doldrums of Harry Potter's well-documented Early-Installment Weirdness, before Cedric Diggory slams the gas and upshifts the whole series into its correct age bracket). More specifically, once I'd gone through and picked out everything in the book that happened because of Lucius, I didn't have a plot — hey alexa how do you rewrite Chamber of Secrets when We Got No Fucking Chamber Of Secrets — and oh by the way, even if you want to do a moody tone/political setup book, remember that your protagonists are still twelve, so if you go too dark or too intense, you'll risk torpedoing your readers' suspension of disbelief. Good luck, Charlie.
Book 3 felt the most like its own novel, if that makes sense? It's the last truly feel-good book of the series; it's a great stand-alone mystery novel with relatively low stakes. Plus you get a bunch of the big series icons: patronuses, dementors, werewolves, Hogsmeade, the Marauders' Map, and time turners arithmancy. It just felt like a good old-fashioned motherfucking romp of a mystery/adventure story, before any of the complex character work and major stakes of the late books come in.
Book 4 was the most fun I've had writing anything maybe ever. I don't even know what it was. Maybe the tournament arc, honestly? Love me a tournament arc. But in any case, I opened every new chapter feeling a tingle of excitement for what I was gonna get to do. Oh, and the romance started, finally, Jesus God (if it feels like a slow burn reading, just imagine what it felt like writing it, when everything takes ten times as long, and you have to figure out how to word the fucker.)
Book 5, in contrast, has felt much less like that tingle of "here we go!" and more like "oh, man, this is gonna be cool." Because this is the arc of the story that composed the original idea for Lionheart, literally years ago, and to be honest, I didn't think I'd get this far! If you'd asked me "do you know that it's going to take you 500,000 words of backstory before you can start writing that concept you're thinking about, and you're going to do it anyway?" I would have said: "absolutely not, strange mind-reader!" But like... I'm here! Finally! And it's... real now? Like, this isn't just a bunch of clips of scenes in my head anymore! That's rad!
That being said, it's definitely been slower than Book 4, because I kept switching back to my outline document to make sure that certain things were set up properly, and that I hadn't lost any of the plot threads or forgotten a minor beat that was vitally important for the story three chapters later. And I had a minor crisis about three months ago when I ripped out about 8 chapters in the first third of the book — basically everything from September to December — because I'd done a readthrough to check pacing (big mistake! never edit while drafting, that's satan talking) and realized I had a missing storyline. Like, there was a whole layer of the story that was just. Missing. Not there. And the existing text really couldn't fit another thread, so instead of taking weeks to pore through and try to sift out what I could save, I needed to factory reset and start over. And I didn't want to! I vividly remember sitting there with my head in my hands, trying not to weep, because I'd decimated 90,000 words of work in a single edit. But it had to be done. Because the story wasn't going to work. And now (hopefully) it will.
And of course, there's still that sense of excitement and exhilaration from before. Always. But whereas Book 4 felt like a delicious chocolate pudding, Book 5 is a medium-rare steak.
(Book 6, so far, is four shots of espresso and a whiskey chaser. FWIW.)

Note
If the saga were rewritten again only this time from the perspective of another character in each book who would the characters be?
My choices:
Philosopher's Stone: Hermione and Ron
Chamber of Secrets: Ginny
Prisoner of Azkaban: Lupin or Sirius
Goblet of Fire: Cedric, Barto Crouch Junior or Ron (when he was angry with Harry)
Order of the Phoenix: Neville, Luna and Dumbledore
Half-Blood Prince: Snape and Draco
Deathly Hallows: Snape, Voldemort and Neville
Hmm, interesting idea. Honestly, I never really considered rewriting it because if I wrote it, it won't be Harry Potter. But I really love multiple POVs, and it's a fun thought.
The main concern would be how to not reveal the mystery too quickly in some of them. And I think sticking to a limited number of POVs and being very careful with them is the way to go here.
For Philosopher’s Stone, Ron and Hermione are solid choices. I agree with you there. Like, I imagine a chapter from Hermione's POV that she's crying in the bathroom and it ends with a cliffhanger of a troll barging in, then the next chapter is either Harry or Ron. I think it could be fun.
For Chamber of Secrets, Ginny is the obvious choice. The main risk is that if Ginny is a POV, it'll be really hard to keep the readers guessing about who the heir of Slytherin is. Even if the readers know she has the diary early on, it's enough to undercut the mystery. Maybe she could have a few chapters in the end to cover her side of what happened. I imagine towards the end, after Hermione gets petrefied, we start getting Ginny's POV that goes back in time a bit, shows her losing time, and writing to Tom. The reader would feel the dread build up slowly and then, bam, she's writing her own death message on the wall while crying, and then we cut to Harry's POV. I think maybe for the second POV, we could get away with a Tom POV? But like, not one that makes it obvious he's writing to Ginny. Like, the POV would cover Tom's diary experiences before coming into Ginny's hands in a way that'll leave the reader uncertain who he is and how he connects to everything. Bonus points if the reader gets attached to Tom and then recognizes him when Harry gets his hands on the diary. The reader would then be shocked and heartbroken when Tom is revealed to be Voldemort.
For Prisoner of Azkaban, I think Lupin would be a fun one. More stories of the marauders, his guilt and wondering if he should tell Dumbledore Sirius is an animagus or not. Like Ginny, Sirius reveals the mystery too fast if he's a POV. I would actually want to hear from Hermione in this book. The time turner is a mystery, but it's not the main one, and I feel it can be used for fun shenanigans from her POV. Also, we could discover Lupin is a werewolf throughout the book with her.
For Goblet of Fire, so with Barty Crouch Jr we have the same problem as with Ginny and Sirius. The readers get answers too fast. So, I feel like Ron and Cedric are really solid options for this book, I agree with you there. And maybe once Barty is revealed we can have like 1 chapter from his POV to sum the situation up instead of listening to the varitesorum interrogation, or during the interrogation we have this chapter and get his thoughts too. I just don't think his is a POV that'll work if we want to keep the reveal at the end. But I love Barty, so I can give him one chapter at the end.
For Order of the Phoenix, I want Sirius' POV a lot. This is the book that should make the reader connect with him the most so his death hurts the most. So, I want his POV, well see a bit from the Order without revealing all of Dumbledore's cards. The second POV, I think either Neville or Luna are a good choice, but I'm leaning towards Luna here and Neville in DH.
For Half-Blood Prince, Snape is a very fun POV here, and so is Draco. Draco’s POV in this book would be fascinating. The thing is, both of them would reveal everything too fast. So, I'm thinking some chapters from Snape's POV that are carefully selected to not reveal too much, but show a little of what's going on with the Death Eaters and Draco's book long breakdown, without revealing he's on Dumbledore's side. It's the book named after him, so I feel he should get a POV there. The second extra POV, I think, could be someone like Pansy or Blaise Zabini, maybe? Like, a Slytherin student we don't really know that'll shed light on what's going down in their house in the wake of Voldemort’s return. But they'll still not really know what's up beyound, Draco has a mission, and we're growing a little concerned.
For Deathly Hollows, I definitely agree on Neville being a POV. It'll be great to see what's going on with the DA at the school through his eyes. As for Voldemort and Snape; Snape, I feel, would be too revealing, and Voldemort would be a fascinating POV, but I think it wouldn't really fit what the book is going for. I think Draco could be a better POV here to show the Death Eater side of things, without undercutting any tension. He'd just up the tension, becouse he'd have a shitty time. Also, Draco POV adds another mystery to the book: "where is the Dark Lord disappearing to?" It'll kind of mirror Harry wondering the same thing about Dumbledore in OotP and HBP and could be really interesting.

Parings: George Weasley x Female OC (Slytherin)
Description:
Rosalie Riddle lives in the shadow of her father, going to Hogwarts made her feel safe and happy and when she meets George Weasley she feels a whole new emotion. Follow her story from the beginning of her Hogwarts Journey.
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Can fluff be a warning? Little bit of angst. Fred still dies, sorry.
P.s. So this is a rewrite from a fanfiction I originally wrote when I was roughly 16. It was awful, truly awful, but I adored the story so I decided to rewrite it ten years later. Enjoy.
Tumblr media
I was curled up on a armchair in the Slytherin common room, with a book in my lap. It was 2am, and I couldn't sleep, so I was reading and watching the lake, it brought me peace.
"Couldn't sleep?"
I turned around to see Draco, I shook my head, he joined me and sat on the armchair opposite me.
"I really want to know more about the secrets of this school" I spoke
"I know that only the heir of Slytherin can open the Chamber" Draco said.
"Are you hoping it's you?" I asked, he shrugged, most people thought it was me. I couldn't find any records of my family tree in the Library. So I had no idea.
"It would be cool, I suppose if I were the heir" Draco spoke, I chuckled.
"Though you would know, your parents would probably of told you" I explained "Plus, people have already been petrified, and you didn't order the monster to do that, did you?" I asked, Draco shook his head.
"Who has been petrified?" He then asked.
"A first year from Gryffindor, a few others and Hermione Granger" I answered.
Draco laughed.
"Glad it happened to know it all Granger" He sneered, I shrugged, over the last few weeks Hermione and I were civil to one another, and unlike my father I had no bother being mean to everyone around me. It's what made me think I was more like my mother, if only I knew who she was.
_________
"Where do you think Potter and Weasley are going with Lockhart?" I ask, watching them, for the last few weeks, Draco and I had been watching and following Potter and Weasley, we were curious to see what they were up too. And we wanted to know who was the heir of Salazar Slytherin, people actually thought it was Potter! It kept them from staring and whispering it about me.
"Come on Draco!" I say, we watched Potter, Weasley and Lockhart jump town this pipe inside of the girl's bathroom. Draco and I stared down, it didn't look like it had a bottom.
"We have to jump" I say, reaching my hand out, Draco held on right, and we jumped. We screamed as we fell until we slide down and hit something hard. I looked around, seeing thousands upon thousands of bones.
"Draco, oh my god, why did we do this?" I ask panicking.
"Rosalie, be quiet, we don't want them hearing us do we?"
Draco was right, we had to be quiet. We stood up, brushing the dust and dirt off of us, and started walking.
I could faintly hear the other's voices, so we followed that, we turned a corner and I saw Potter, Weasley and Lockhart. I sped forward leaving Draco behind until I caught up to Harry.
But then rocks started falling, creating a wall between Harry, me and the others. I looked at Harry, nervous. I felt scared. I know I could of avoided this, but where's the fun.
"Come on" Potter spoke, I nodded and followed him.
"Why are we down here?" I asked, but he didn't answer. We walked through a door, into a huge room, covered with gorgeous snake statues, and a giant head statue at the end.
"Ginny!" Potter suddenly yelled, he ran forward to the small body lying on the ground.
"She won't wake up" A voice suddenly spoke, I looked around to see a boy, a few years older than us in Slytherin uniform, but an older version. It was my dad, when he was at Hogwarts.
"Who are you?" The man asked, looking at me.
"Rosalie" I answered, I took my wand out of my robe and held it close to me.
"Riddle, she's your daughter" Potter spoke to him. How was this possible, I knew he was powerful when he was alive, but how could he be scattered throughout, and how have I met two different versions of him in my two years at Hogwarts. I had to stop following Harry into these situations.
"Soon Ginny Weasley will die, and her power will become mine.. Lord Voldemort will rise once more" He spoke, I was taken back.. I stepped back until I reached the edge of the room. I slid to the ground and watched as the head statues mouth opened, and out came the Basilisk.
It was beautiful really, but I was scared, I felt tears dripping down my cheeks as I watched it chase Harry and I did nothing.
Suddenly Tom Riddle walked over to me.
"You can't be a child of mine, no child of mine would cower at the side" He sniggered, I felt a pang of hurt in my chest.
"I'm sorry" I whimper.
"Pathetic" He spoke, walking away from me.. I couldn't do anything. I was powerless, pathetic.
"No!" Tom screamed, the basilisk shook from side to side, screaming in pain. I looked up to see it's eyes running red with blood. I was sad really, I almost wished I could have it as a pet.
Potter kept fighting it though, he looked bloodied up and in a lot of pain, I stood up and took my wand from my robes, but I couldn't think of any spell I had learnt. I truly was pathetic.
But Potter had thrusted the sword up into the Basilisk's mouth killing it, he took a fang which was lodged in his arm and stabbed the black book which was closed to Ginny's body, and suddenly, Tom's body started to fade away in fits of a shining light.
I ran over to them.
"Harry, I'm sorry" I whispered to him. He lifted his hand and placed it on my shoulder.
"You were scared, don't worry okay?" He smiled at me.
"We need to go back, get to Dumbledore!" Harry said, he helped Ginny up and we hobbled back to the wall, which Ron and Draco managed to break down.
"How will we get back up?" Draco asked.
"Fawkes can take us" Harry smiled, petting the birds head.
And soon, we were holding on to one another, flying upwards whilst Lockhart was screaming.
"It's just like magic!"

Fanfic Idea #2
Rewriting scenes and creating new ones from Harry Potter (or any fandom since it’s universally compatible), but from other characters’ P.O.V.s while keeping them in character and not diverging or contradicting what’s canon.
Examples:
The night Harry’s Parents died from either Lily’s or Voldemort’s POV.
Oliver Wood’s reaction to McGonagall putting Harry on the Team and then their first practice.
Or Ginny P.O.V. during the Chamber of Secrets.
Or Sirius and/or Remus P.O.V. during the Prisoner of Azkaban. Or Even Peter Pettigrew’s reaction to Sirius escaping.
Cedric Diggory’s P.O.V. During the Goblet of Fire,
Draco’s during the Half-Blood Prince,
Dumbledore during the Order of the Phoenix,
Voldemort’s during the Deathly Hallows or honestly any of the books/movies.
Or even scenes with these characters that take place during or even before the books/movies that are never referenced in the books/movies because it’s not Harry’s P.O.V.
And this type of prompt is compatible with any fandom. Which makes it more awesome.

Harry Potter and the Hidden Mind
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/Rd36Znf
by Anomalist
Harry Potter has always been in his twin brother's shadow. Chris Potter, the Boy Who Lived, has captured the hearts of the wizarding world and his family alike. The plan has always been that Harry was going to be his bodyguard and protector when they got to Hogwarts, staying by his side and making sure that he was safe, and he wants more than anything to be important and useful. And when Harry is sorted into Slytherin, it all falls apart. But, with his talent in Occlumency and Legilimency, and his strange affinity for wards, Dumbledore realizes that he just might be the perfect spy.
After his sorting, Harry found that he was neither wanted as his brother's protector nor able to be it, and that Dumbledore seemed to have no way for him to be of use anymore. Still, he survived the year, pursuing his talents and making allies (and enemies) within his House.
Before he can return to Hogwarts, he has to make it through a summer with a family that doesn't think too highly of Slytherins. But once he does return, he finds himself in an even more hostile environment as the whole school has turned against them. And to make matters more complicated, Dumbledore finally has a way for Harry to help.

“Fucking shithead perfect potter” IM CRYING ITS SO MATTHEO CORE AHAHAHAHHAHAHA
No harry is such a little brat idec 🙄 he’d so be all weird around Mattheo too, touchin his forehead scar and shit. Im a passive person(i say this after playing high impact/contact sports my entire life, including competitive wrestling) but if I was Mattheo i’d beat the shitttt out of harry the second he opened his mouth. Omg or Mattheo getting his hands on the tom riddle diary and his father speaking to him during chamber of secrets
UGH I NEED A FULL REWRITE OF HARRY POTTER BUT MATTHEO RIDDLE IS JUST HARRYS FUCKIN SCAPEGOAT FOR EVERYTHING
Okay but can we also talk about Harry and Mattheo in a world where they can be friends? Trauma bond? Trauma… healing???
Yknow my #1 fear while taking a break was falling out of my fixation with the slytherin boys?? But alas. I only simp for mattheo harder now
Also can we take a moment to talk about how Slughorn would TWEAKKKK around Mattheo? Because he so would.

COS: Part 11
For a moment there was silence as Harry, George, Percy and Lockhart entered the room, standing there in muck, slime, and blood. Then, there was a scream.
            “Percy!”
It was Mrs. Weasley, who had been sitting, crying in front of the fire. She leapt to her feet, closely followed by Mr. Weasley, and both of them went to embrace their son.
“You saved him! How did you do it?”
“I think we’d all like to know that,” said Professor McGonagall, who was standing by Professor Dumbledore and Professor Snape. Harry walked over to the desk and laid the Sorting Hat, the ruby encrusted sword, and what remained of Riddle’s diary down before them.
Then he told them what happened, Hermione’s discovery about the basilisk. Aragog. Myrtle. And how they got into the Chamber.
“How in Merlin’s name,” Snape interrupted. “did you survive that?”
Harry felt strongly that Percy’s bit of the story wasn’t his to tell. How Riddle had used him and got inside his head. But what if they expelled him. Percy wasn’t a little first year, he was a sixth year prefect. Would they think he should have known better? Or that he never should have put himself in that position to begin with? Would they place the blame on the victim when it was no one’s fault but Voldemort’s?
Instinctively, Harry looked at Dumbledore who smiled faintly.
“What interests me most,” said Dumbledore. “is how Lord Voldemort managed to enchant Percy when my sources tell me he is currently in hiding in the forests of Albania?”
Relief, warm, sweeping, glorious relief swept over Harry.
“W…what’s that?” said Mr. Weasley in a stunned voice. “You-Know-Who? Enchanted Percy. But Percy’s not….Percy, how?”
Harry didn’t answer. If Percy was ever going to get over this then he needed to be the one to explain.
“It was the diary,” said Percy. “Tom Riddle’s diary.”
“Oh, very few people know that Lord Voldemort was once called Tom Riddle. He was probably one of the most brilliant students that Hogwarts has ever seen.”
            Dumbledore looked to the Weasleys.
“He disappeared after leaving school, traveled far and wide…sank so deeply into the Dark Arts, met with the darkest sorts then resurfaced years later as Lord Voldemort. He was barely recognizable as the head boy who once went to school here.”
“But Percy,” said Mrs. Weasley. “What does our son have to do with…..with him?”
“I found his diary,” Percy said, voice getting stronger as George stood firm beside him. “I’ve been writing to him all year. I was unsure, at first, I just thought it was a trick item, until…..”
“Percy,” said Mr. Weasley flabbergasted. “Haven’t I taught you anything? What have we always told you?”
“Never trust anything that can think for itself if you can’t see where it keeps it’s brain,” Percy replied dutifully.
“Why didn’t you show it to anyone? Me or your mother? A Professor? A suspicious object like that, it was clearly full of Dark magic.”
“Enough, dad!” George cut in. “How was Percy to know it was a Dark object? Anyone can get joke diaries at Zonkos for a few sickles. He shouldn’t be punished because some psycho took advantage of him. If anything I’m the one who should be punished. I knew he was having a hard time…”
George choked up, and the tears were already flowing down Mr. Weasley’s face.
“I should’ve asked him… I should’ve been there….”
Then Mr. Weasley pulled both of his sons into a crushing hug, each Weasley repeating the same phrase, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” Even Dumbledore looked touched at the family’s loving display.
No punishments were doled out, but three awards for special services to the school were given out, one for Harry and one for George, and one on behalf of Millicent Bulstrode, Draco Malfoy, Hermione Granger, and Percy Weasley, all who had aided in the discovery and removal of the basilisk and the diary. It turned out that Hermione wasn’t the only one who had discovered what was going on. In order to prove Harry wrong, Draco had been spending countless hours in the library, finding out the identity of the monster right before he had been petrified. He set out to prove Harry wrong and he did.
“And what do you say Lockhart, do you corroborate their story?” asked Snape, skeptically. But Lockhart was just staring off into space, the jewel on the sword having caught his full attention. George then explained about the memory charm and Snape had to hide his smirk.
“Impaled upon your own sword, Gilderoy?”
“Sword?” he said, absentmindedly. “Is this my sword?” he asked, wide eyed.
“Would you mind taking Professor Lockhart up to the infirmary too?” Dumbledore asked George who was to escort his brother there immediately along with Mr. and Mrs. Weasley.
“I’d like a few more words with Harry.”
“Sit down, Harry,” he said, and Harry sat, feeling unaccountably nervous. “First of all, Harry, I want to thank you,” said Dumbledore, eyes twinkling. “You must have shown real loyalty down in the Chamber to have called Fawkes to you.”
“Tom,” Harry stated, he assumed that’s what they were here to talk about. “He said I’m like him. Strange likenesses, he said.”
“Did he now?” said Dumbledore, looking thoughtfully at Harry from under his thick silver eyebrows. “And what do you think, Harry?”
“Maybe I am in superficial ways, but I would never have done that to Hagrid or Percy. He didn’t understand love or that Percy would try to fight back. He underestimated all of us. A real Slytherin wouldn’t have done that.”
“Indeed,” said Dumbledore. “There are a lot of things Voldemort does not understand. Harry, I believe you can speak Parseltongue because Lord Voldemort can speak Parseltongue. If I’m not mistaken he transferred some of his powers to you the night he gave you that scar. Not something he intended to do, I’m sure….”
“Voldemort put a bit of himself in me?” Harry said, thunderstruck.
“It certainly seems so.”
“But sir, I wanted to be in Gryffindor. I asked the Sorting Hat to put me there, but it put me in Slytherin instead.”
“A truly extraordinary magical artifact. It gave you the sword when you truly need it and it gave you the house that you needed, you may not have chosen your house, Harry, but you chose to after Percy in the Chamber, you remained friends with Misters Weasley and Longbottom and stood by Ms. Granger. It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities. You have defined your time here not as a Slytherin or a Gryffindor, but as a student of this school. What you need, Harry, is some food and sleep. While I need to write Azkaban, we need our gamekeeper back and dear me, it seems we need yet another Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher. We do seen to run through them, don’t we?”
It was then the door burst open so violently that it bounced back off the wall. Lucius Malfoy stood there, fury n his face. And cowering behind his legs, fingers wrapped in bandages was Dobby.
“So, you’ve come back. The governors suspended you, but you still saw fit to come back to Hogwarts.”
“Good evening, Severus,” said Dumbledore, smiling evenly. “Once the eleven other Governors heard that Arthur Weasley’s son had been killed, they wanted me back here at once. They seemed to think I was the best man for the job after all. Very strange tales they told me, too. Several of them seemed to think that you had threatened to curse their families if they didn’t agree to suspend me in the first place. You’ll be glad to know we stopped the attack without any fatalities and caught the person responsible.”
“Well?” said Mr. Malfoy sharply. “Did you find the person who did that to my son?”
“The same person as last time, Lucius,” said Dumbledore. “But this time, Lord Voldemort was acting through somebody else. By means of this diary.” Dumbledore held up the diary, a giant hole now in the middle of it.
“I see….”, said Mr. Malfoy slowly to Dumbledore.
Dobby behind Mr. Malfoy was doing something very odd. He would glance at the diary then point to Mr. Malfoy then hit himself hard on the head with his fist.
“A clever plan, if not for Harry here and George Weasley, Percy Weasley might have taken all the blame and we would never have known.”
Mr. Malfoy forced himself to speak.
“Very unfortunate,” he said stiffly. And it clicked.
“Don’t you want to know how Percy got a hold of the diary, Mr. Malfoy?” asked Harry. Lucius Malfoy rounded on him.
“How should I know how the idiot boy got a hold of it?” he said.
“Because you gave it to him. In the overcrowded Florish and Blotts, you bumped into him and slipped it in his pocket.”
He saw Mr. Malfoy’s hands clench then unclench.
“Prove it,” he hissed.
“Oh, no one will be able to do that,” said Dumbledore, smiling at Harry. “Not now that Riddle has vanished from the book, but I’d say Arthur Weasley, for one, would make it his personal mission if you were to give out any other of Lord Voldemort’s school things to innocents.”
Lucius looked like he was going to reach for his wand, but instead said, “We’re going, Dobby.”
“Mr. Malfoy,” Harry gasped after he had caught up with the man in the hall. “I’ve got something for you.” And he forced his smelly sock into Lucius Malfoy’s hand.
“What the…” Mr. Malfoy ripped the sock from the diary, threw it aside then looked furiously from the ruined book to Harry. “You’ll meet the same sticky end as your parents one of these days Harry Potter,” he said softly. “They were meddlesome fools, too. Come, Dobby.” He turned to go.
            “I said, come.”
But Dobby didn’t move.
“Got a sock,” said Dobby in disbelief. “Master threw it and Dobby caught it. Dobby….Dobby is free.”
Lucius Malfoy stood frozen then he lunged at Harry.
“You’ve lost me my servant, boy!” But Dobby shouted. “You shall not harm Harry Potter!” There was a loud bang and Mr. Malfoy was thrown backward. He crashed down the stairs, three at a time, landing in a crumpled heap on the landing below. He got up, pulled his wand, but Dobby raised a long, threatening finger. Lucius Malfoy had no choice.
With a last, incensed stare at the pair of them, he swung his cloak around him and hurried out of sight.
“Harry Potter freed Dobby. Harry Potter set Dobby free!”
“Least I could do, Dobby, for a friend,” said Harry. The elf’s ugly brown face split suddenly into a wide, toothy smile.
“Harry Potter is greater by far than Dobby ever knew!” he sobbed. “Farewell, Harry Potter!”
And with a final loud crack, Dobby disappeared. And Harry smiled.
Harry took his seat at breakfast the next morning and glanced over at the Gryffindor table where Percy sat flanked by his brothers. Fred sat beside him, a companionable arm threw across Percy’s shoulders. Oliver Wood sat in front of them as they all sat chatting merrily and though Percy and George looked a bit rougher than normal, Harry could see that none of that mattered.
“How long do you think that will last?” asked Millicent.
“Awhile,” Harry answered honestly. They all looked like one big happy family, now, but Harry knew what often happened with good intentions.
Percy would need help to get over what happened between him and Voldemort, Harry just hoped that they would be there for him then, too. It’s always different when it’s old wounds verses new and people often lose interest when things aren’t exciting anymore, but he hoped the Weasleys were better than most people.
“And what are you going to do this summer, Potter, or do you just plan to rest. I hear being the Heir of Slytherin can be quite taxing,” said Blaise. “The Dursleys aren’t much for rest and relaxation, at least, not where I’m concerned,” replied Harry. Blaise laughed.
Millicent and Blaise knew a little of what it was like to live with the Dursleys, but he spared them the details. They saw the Christmas gifts, if you could call them that, and how he skirted certain issues, or always kept his eyes trained on the person who happened to be the loudest one in the room, but they respected his privacy.
“What about you, Mil?” Blaise asked.
“France,” Millicent answered. “Berma’s getting married.”
            “Who’s Berma?” asked Harry.
Millicent growled.
            “Millicent’s sister,” Blaise answered.
“Oh,” Harry said awkwardly, but didn’t press.
As people were staring to leave the Great Hall, a Slytherin girl stood up with a plate full of food and “accidentally” spilled it all over Vincent Crabbe’s head. He spluttered then stood up in a huff, taking off out of the Great Hall intentionally ignoring Millicent’s smiling face.
“Wait, I meant to ask you, that night, Crabbe said something about your….”
“Don’t say it, Potter!” Blaise paled, his dark face growing slightly ashy.
“Sweet Salazar, Unless you want every Slytherin girl on your case like that poor fool Crabbe then you don’t want to finish that sentence.”
“What’s the big deal?” Harry asked as he and his friends stood to leave the Goodbye feast. Gryffindor had won the cup, but just barely. Slytherin was second, due to Malfoy and Wood’s accident and that last match being ruled a draw.
“I’ll let Granger explain it to you. Respectable young ladies don’t speak about such things in mixed company,” said Millicent, brushing her hair over her shoulder.
“Ha!” huffed Hermione as she met them outside the doors before her curiosity got the better of her.
“What do I need to explain?” Millicent leaned over and whispered something in her ear. Hermione’s eyes widened comically before turning murderous then slightly amused.
“The C word,” Hermione started. “is an old Pureblood tradition, quite archaic really.
“The point Granger,” Millicent prompted.
“The contract,” she whispered. “is a tradition for pureblood girls. Most get them as soon as they are born, it’s the first stage in an arranged marriage. A contract could say, “She will not date anyone before the engagement,” It could have clauses for a specific hair color or style. It normally determines dowry and dictates property rights and such, but the details could be anything.”
“And you get these from birth?” asked Harry.
“Six days old,” Millicent replied.
            “But why?” Harry asked.
“Think about it, Potter,” said Blaise. “If there were no, uh, c words, then Goyle would have even fewer brain cells because they would be split between two heads.”
Hermione nodded. “It’s a very taboo subject, usually only discussed within feminine company. What Crabbe said was a major faux pau. Pureblood marriages are carefully monitored and the sheer mention of Millicent’s contract could have hurt her in her current betrothed’s eyes.
            “You’re engaged!” Harry exclaimed.
“Potter,” said Millicent, long suffering. “I’ve been engaged four times.”
            “You’re twelve,” Harry deadpanned.
“You should hear about Tracey Davis. Besides it’s not my fault Blaise and I didn’t last. Daddy just thought I could do better.”
Blaise smiled at her. “It was an honor while it lasted, Ms. Bulstrode.” Blaise bowed low to the ground, and Millicent curtsied.
            “Who else?” asked Harry.
“Let me guess,” said Hermione. “Goyle for sure.”
“Yes,” said Millicent. “He was number three and my personal favorite. No offense, darling,” she told Blaise.
            “But not Crabbe.”
“No,” said Millicent. “Can’t guess, Granger?”
            Hermione nodded.
“Your old Captain,” Millicent told Harry.
            “Marcus!” Harry exclaimed.
“Yes,” said Millicent. “He was number two. A little harsh, but better than my current betrothed.”
Just then Malfoy walked by and Harry caught the slight incline of his head in Millicent’s direction.
            “No way! Malfoy!”
Millicent clicked her tongue. “Sad, but true.”
“But there’s no way you could marry Malfoy,” said Hermione.
“It’s the way things are done, Granger.”
“But that’s horrible,” said Harry. “You should, at least, have a choice.”
“Oh, I do,” she said. “Any pureblood would do really.”
            “Any pureblood?” asked Harry.
“In theory,” replied Millicent distractedly messing with her hair.
“So, in theory you could marry a Weasley.”
Millicent stopped her ministrations.
            “Uh,”
“Because that’s what you said, Mil,”
“No,” Millicent balked. “Not ever did the words, I would marry a Weasley come out of my mouth.”
            “But you said,” Harry laughed.
“Harry Potter, mark my words, I would rather eat slugs then marry one of those red headed miscreants.”
Harry stifled a giggle remembering poor Ron, and told Millicent to be careful what she wished for. Harry got a jelly legs jinx for his trouble.
“Hey, at least a Weasley would be better than a Malfoy.”
Millicent nodded indiscriminately, but didn’t say anything.
As they boarded the train later that day, Harry was glad to see George, Percy, Fred, Lee Jordan and Oliver Wood sitting together, talking and laughing.
Harry fell in behind Hermione and Ron, Millicent claiming the seat next to the window, and sat down, hoping that the next year would be quieter. Please, Merlin, no more creepy diaries or giant snakes, and no more finding out his friends were engaged to evil, blonde gits. Yeah, Harry thought, next year would be a lot more peaceful.

Intertwined - WIP - Sneak Peak
Harry has survived Year 1 in Slytherin- What will happen in Year 2?
___________________________________________________________
The writing appeared slowly in the diary.
I see. Do you know Harry Potter?
The flash of his intense green eyes came to Hermione’s mind.  Did she know Harry Potter? Not really. Not at all.
No.
Her hand trembled as she wrote the word, and she pressed the quill down too hard, the black ink spreading around the dot at the end.  It looked like black blood slowly creeping over the page.
It felt like her mind blurred for a minute and when she came back to herself she had set aside the quill and was staring down into the diary.  She rubbed her eyes with her hands, she had been so tired lately.
She gathered up her things sluggishly, slowly making her way out of the library.  As she made her way down the corridor towards house rooms, she swore she could hear hissing just like in her dreams.
She sped up her walking and turned the corner to see Draco and Harry both in quidditch uniforms talking heatedly.
“I’m telling you Potter, Dobby is trustworthy, we have to take it seriously.”
“House elves are dedicated to their masters-” Harry cut off as they both spotted her.
She was just about to walk by them without a word, when she heard the hissing again.  She looked around the corridor trying to spot the source.
“You heard it.” Harry’s voice was almost accusatory. What?  The tone made her back a bit away from them, two boys dressed in green Slytherin colors with cold eyes.
“I didn’t hear anything.” She realized she needed to walk past them to get to her house rooms, it was almost curfew.  She set her shoulders and tried to step around them when Harry’s hand shot out to grab her wrist.
“I’ll see you back at the dormitories, Malfoy.”  Draco looked between the two of them, then rolled his eyes and strolled away, Harry then turned to her. “I’ll walk you to your rooms.”
Hermione yanked her hand back. “I don’t need rescuing right now, thank you.”  She set off with her nose in the air, only a teeny bit ruined when she almost tripped over her own feet.
She ignored the footsteps following her, until he started talking.
“You did really well in herbology with those mandrakes.  Sometimes you talk like you swallowed the textbook.”
Hermione’s steps slowed, and Harry caught up to walk next to her.  “I just read a lot.”
“It shows, you’re always top in everything.” His voice was admiring and Hermione was suddenly really really glad he had decided to walk her to Ravenclaw Tower.  She looked over at him, his quidditch uniform was a bit dirty, he must have just gotten out of practice.
The uniform and the bracers and pads that went along with it made him seem larger than normal.  His eyes met hers and she realized she had been staring at him and jerked her head forward, just as they came to the Ravenclaw entrance.
The entrance to Ravenclaw Tower was a door without a doorknob or keyhole, only a bronze knocker in the shape of an eagle.  One had to answer a riddle asked by the eagle. As Hermione got close it spoke.
“What came first, the phoenix or the fire?”
“A circle has no beginning.”
The door swung open and Hermione stepped in, glancing back to murmur thank you to Harry as the door swung shut behind her.

Gryffindor Extensive Dating Neville Headcanons:
A/N: Y’all keep finding and requesting the characters I’m so soft for. Here’s my baby Neville who is an absolute sweetheart of a character and should be appreciated more. Requested by @maybenotjellytot (and it’s not letting me tag you, curse you Tumblr)
You know the drill, this is super long and super cute
Tumblr media
You meet on the Hogwarts express. He’s stammering and clinging to Trevor for dear life
He’s so shy and blushing and tripping over his words that you can’t help but giggle and introduce yourself
“Neville. Me. I’m. Yes. Leville Nongbottom” You giggle again and he’s bright red.
“Nice to meet you Neville,” you smile brightly.
You sit together on the train ride and it’s sort of awkward but a good awkward. He starts to open up a bit about wanting to learn magic and that his Gran is expecting a lot from him.
You can sympathize with your overbearing well meaning pure blood grandfather
Then you’re both sorted into Gryffindor and it’s nice to have a friend. You find friends in the Golden Trio as well, but you’re always partial to Neville because he’s the first one who had the courage to say hello to you
Since you’re in the same house it means you have all of your classes together. Potions is rough for both of you and Snape just terrifies Neville—sure he was creepy but you didn’t really understand it. You still defended him though, even if it ended you in detention a lot
“You really don’t have to do this,” he stammers, meeting you after detention. “I don’t mind,” you smile and so does he.
You love Astronomy and he loves Herbology and you two are the biggest dorks. He knows everything about plants and you know everything about the stars
Soon you’re learning to ride brooms. It comes easy to you and Neville breaks his wrist. You take him to the infirmary flipping Malfoy off as you walk away sure Hooch took five points from Gryffindor for it but it felt good. The little prat
“There’s always one,” Pomfrey sighs and resets Neville’a wrist. You stay by his side all the while, reassuring him that he was amazing anyway.
“I can’t do anything,” he groans. “Some Gryffindor I am. I don’t belong here.” “Neville that’s not true,” you frown. “You belong in Gryffindor as much as Nifflers love gold.” You both blush at your sudden defense of him.
And honestly it’s nice to have a friend. When the weather turns colder and you’re freezing Neville gives you his gloves and tells you not to worry about it.
You study for exams together. It takes some time but Neville finally catches on to Potions when you (re)teach him the lessons. Snape doesn’t bother you like he does Neville you always want to ask him about it but never find the courage. Some Gryffindor you are, you think
The Christmas Holiday comes and you both hug each other goodbye, promising to write to another and his grandmother and your parents catch sight of the interaction and they tease you both about it all the time
“Mum he’s just a friend!” You whine. “Gran she’s just a friend! That’s all!” Neville dismays. Neither guardian is convinced.
You get Neville a Herbology book and spend time drawing a few of his favorite plants perfectly for Christmas and he gets you a monocle that works like a telescope and shows the night sky any time of day
You go to Quidditch games together and you both put in the same amount of effort into Gryffindor spirit but something is always slightly off to you about the house system that you don’t really tell anyone
You sneak up to the Astronomy tower most weekends and one time Neville catches you saying “you shouldn’t be here you’re going to get in trouble” you take his hand and pull him up the tower and let his hand go, marveling at the stars
“Aren’t they wonderful?” You sigh. “So many stories are written up there Nev, and every night they smile down on us,”
Neville doesn’t understand your passion for the stars but he loves the way you talk about them, like you knew each of the characters in the stories that the stars told
One night you find Harry and Hermione in the Astronomy tower and you’re surprised. Now thanks to Malfoy you all have detention.
In the Forbidden forest you’re paired with Neville and Hagrid and you both set off, terrified. Neville hated the dark and you hated not being able to see the stars. You hear a noise from behind you and jump into Neville arms.
You’re both blushing and awkward. As you apologize and he stammers something about not worrying. Gee some Gryffindors you two are
You’re the one who finds Neville after Hermione immobilizes him and after you undo the spell, you two go straight to McGonagall. Again, you take his hand and pull him through the halls on the way to McGonagall. When he explains what happened, you beam because of course he’s a Gryffindor how can he not see that?
At the End of Year Feast he’s awarded the ten points that causes Gryffindor to win and you hug him without a second thought and now you two are blushing and awkward again and everyone laughs at the two of you.
You write to him over the summer and it’s really nice to have him to talk to. He’s a bit more honest in his letters than he ever was actually talking and laments quite often about his grandmothers expectations and that he’s afraid of failing everyone—especially his parents.
That threw you off guard because you didn’t know anything about his parents and he clammed up about the matter whenever you brought it up so you dropped it a long time ago. You still didn’t ask because well, you figured he’d tell you when he was ready. You also tell him that he could never fail you
You send him a photo of the little garden you’ve started because maybe listening to him talk all those nights made something actually stick and you weren’t half bad at gardening and a bit of Moon Lace (a flower that only blooms under the full moon) for his birthday.
Boy does his grandmother ship you two so hard “Ask her out Neville! Be a man! Treat her with respect! I’d always knew you’d find some lovely girl,” “Gran we’re twelve,” “Nonsense dear boy. When you find a girl like that you don’t let her go,”
Now Neville’s worried about being around you because he feels pressured and maybe he does actually like you but he’s sure you only see him as a friend and he doesn’t want to lose you because his grandmother is right, he doesn’t want to let you go
You meet him on the Hogwarts Express again and you two sit together and all of those worries seem to fade because you weren’t just his friend you were his best friend and he wouldn’t trade that for anything
You’re also sitting with another girl—Luna Lovegood. A first year who has her head in the clouds who then gets sorted into Ravenclaw and you three become the “Silver Trio”
When every girl is enamored with Lockheart, you roll your eyes and scoff and Neville feels slightly satisfied at that.
Neville can tell that you’re saddened because you don’t have Astronomy this year, so he tries to cheer you up by sneaking you to the Astronomy Tower whenever he can manage
You spend those nights telling him stories about the ancient gods and heroes that the stars hold, and he gets lost in your words wondering what it would be like to live back then
When the Chamber of Secrets opens you’re a bit more scared than you let on. The only one who knows that is Neville.
When students start to get petrified, you’re hardly seen away from Neville because you don’t want to be next
Malfoy teases you about it and boy does Neville go off on him surprising everyone even you a bit because you knew he was brave but standing up to Malfoy was a different matter that bordered stupid and you’re a goner because if you doubted your feelings for him before you didn’t now
Neville isn’t the best with comforting people so he normally just ends up getting you plants/flowers. You have a small garden on your bedroom window filled with anything and everything and you care for and name each of them
Third year comes and this time you’re enamored with the new DADA teacher and Neville doesn’t get it and neither do you really. But there’s something about Professor Lupin that just draws you in. Of course you have no idea yet that he’s a werewolf and thereby connected to the moon and stars of which you adore
You love Lupin a little more when he teaches the Laughing Spell and makes a fool out of Professor Snape on Neville’a behalf
But now you’re sort of really worried because why in the world the thing Neville fears most Snape?
When your boggart turns into a mirror Neville worries too because what in the world is that supposed to mean?
It’s a late night in the Astronomy Tower that has you both blurting out “why is that your boggart?”
You both look down, scared to admit what’s deep inside. Neville gives in first and begins to explain.
“Snape was one of You Know Whos most trusted in the first war... my... my parents were—”
“Neville you don’t have to tell me if you’re not—” you quickly cut in
“No, I trust you. And... it’ll be nice to have someone understand,” You take hold of his hand and listen earnestly while he tells you about his parents and how they were driven to insanity by Death Eaters and that Snape reminds him of that every day because all he sees is bravery of his parents that he can never live up to and the one who forced it upon him
You pull him into a hug and just hold him close. You had no idea, but now that you did, it out the world into perspective for you a bit more.
“What about you?” He asked softly. “Why...?”
“The mirror,” you sighed. “I... I hate my reflection. It... it reminds me that I’m never enough. I’m not enough for my parents... or my grandparents... or other people. That I’m not good enough, pretty enough, smart enough, brave enough...” you hug your knees. “Nobody wants someone who’s broken. No one wants a freak,”
“I do,” Neville’s words are sure and confident. “You’re more than enough for me. You’re... you’re perfect...”
There are tears in your eyes and you wrap your arms around him.
Now when you by the off chance catch your relflection in something, Neville is normally right beside you and all your fear and worries about not being enough fade over the next few years
The Fat Lady’s portrait gets attacked and you take Nevilles hand without thinking because it feels secure and safe. You side by side with Neville in the Great Hall that night and you’re thankful for the night sky that’s projected on the ceiling
You can’t sleep so you watch the faux stars. Neville sits up with you and asks you to tell a story because it calms him and you and now there are a bunch of students and some professors listening to your stories.
You’re absolutely outraged when Snape steps in to reach DADA but you quiet down when Neville shakes his head, silently pleading not to draw attention to yourselves. You sulk and dive into the lesson because it’s very close to the lore you’re used to reading.
Then you almost drop your quill because you realize why Snape has you reading up on werewolves. “Hey, what’s Professor Lupins first name?” You ask stammering. “Uh, Remus, I think,” Neville frowns. “You alright?”
You nod and rush out of the room as soon as the bell ring and Neville is chasing after you because you’re normally not this skiddish/flighty
You grab a book from your personal library—a book on classical mythology—and flip through the pages. “I knew it!” Then you hear a crash and a yelp. “Oh stars, Neville,” you realize because you know for a fact he’s forgotten that the girls dormitories are enchanted. You race down and find him sprawled out on the common room floor.
“I’ll tell you,” you help him up. “Tonight,” then you’re at war with yourself because you don’t know how safe it is to be out in a full moon but you trust Dumbledore and Professor Lupin enough that later you and Neville are up in the Astonomy Tower
“A werewolf? You think Professor Lupin is a werewolf?” Neville asks skepically. “Yes,” you confirm and you’re about to go into it again when Neville intervenes “No, no I trust you. I do... but what are we going to do about it?”
“Nothing,” you whisper. “It wasn’t his choice... and he hasn’t hurt anybody...” “shouldn’t we tell someone?” Neville asks. “And out him? It’s not exactly easy to be a werewolf Nev.” you two just sit looking at the stars. The Neville reminds you that you both have an essay due for DADA for Snape.
“Oh! That wretched Snape!” You jump up. “Merlin! He’s making the entire class write how to kill werewolves for Lupin to read when he gets back!” You are absolutely seething and Neville has to stop you before you go and hex the stars out of Snape but Merlin does he love you for it
You refuse to write the essay. Instead you copy down all your notes about Roman mythology and Romulus and Remus and the She-Wolf Lupa and how all great heroes of Roman mythology start under the care of the She-Wolf
Remus is about having a nervous break down when he gets to your paper and now he’s sobbing because he’s reading your paper about heroes and wolves
You get full marks on the essay and Lupins deepest respect
Anyway
Neville stumbles through an invitation to Hogsmeade and again you laugh and accept and then before you know it it’s not just you two but an entire group of third years and you two can’t help but feel a bit disappointed
He followed you around the book shop as you pick up books and flip through them and you watch him marvel at the plants in a nearby shop. He goes back and buys you the book you were looking at and you buy him the vine plant. For Christmas. Obviously. As friends.
The holidays come and you’re both hesitant to say goodbye because of the fear lingering over Hogwarts but you part ways
You don’t spend a day without thinking of Neville is okay over the holidays and you send him letters constantly. He’s always worrying about you
When he visits his parents that Christmas he sits down and tells them about a girl he met who’s full of courage and stories and how kind she is and stubborn and brave and how they would adore her
His grandmother over hears and doesn’t tease Neville about it, but she has a deeper respect for you because you really have captured her grandsons heart
Malfoy is being Malfoy one day and you’re about to punch the git in the face but Neville grabs your arm. “It’s not worth it,” he whispers, “he can be wrong, but I know you and you’re not like him. Don’t stoop to his level.” and Merlin if you don’t melt on the spot and somber up
You figure out that Neville has the biggest sweet tooth after catching him in Honeydukes and you ask your (muggle) dad to send you Muggle candies and sweets for Neville to try. He always shares them with you and prefers sweets that don’t have an air of danger to them
You meet fourth gear on the train and your heart skips a beat because he’s grown about half a foot and his hair is shaggy and a mess and perfectly Neville and he still has Trevor and it makes you smile
He’s also freaking out internally because you’ve grown a lot over the summer and you’re in a muggle tshirt and jeans with an MP3 player and he’s just... wow. You two listen to music on the train ride this year and end up falling asleep on each other
At this point everyone including you is waiting for him to ask you out and become an official couple and every time you think he tries to ask you he stammers and freaks out and doesn’t because you’re just so perfect and pretty and popular and he’s not and he’s sure that you like someone else and he’s not much
He finally asks you to the Yule Ball... sort of.
“He’s been practicing dancing alone all month,” Rom jeers. “Must be some girl,” Neville is absolutely red and you can’t seem to look away from your dinner because you think he’s doing it for someone else because why wouldn’t he just ask you to practice dancing? You were best friends anyways, of course you would help him
You ask him who the girl is totally not jealous at all and he goes red and quiet again and you’re really worried now because you don’t want to lose him as a friend if he does like someone else
He finally admits that it is you that he wants to go to the ball with and you just stare at him not expecting that at all because you were convinced he liked someone else but no it’s you. Then it hits you. MERLIN HE LIKES YOU
He’s fumbling for an explanation and that it’s okay if you don’t want to go and a thousand other things and you just pull his tie and press your lips to his to shut him up. It’s awkward and uncoordinated but a perfect first kiss
You both can’t stop smiling the next few days because you’re finally together and there aren’t any walls between you anymore and it’s just nice to have your best friend back who is now also your boyfriend
Oh and you’re also going to the ball together. You smile about that too.
“It’s... it’s not much,” you flush looking down at your dress. “And it’s a bit muggle...” “You’re perfect,” Neville cuts you off and for once you believe the words and him practicing dancing really pays off because he’s bloody marvelous. You two spend the whole night laughing and dancing
Though everyone is staying on campus for the holidays because of the tournament Neville asks you if you want to come with him to visit his parents on the holiday. You smile softly and take his hand, nodding
You formally meet Neville’s Grandmother this time, not just passing by at a train station. She starts to scold Neville about doing something, but sees you clench your fist and take his hand and she pauses.
You’re nervous and it’s written on your face and Neville thinks that it’s because of the entire situation and that his parents are well... but you quickly blurt out “What if they don’t like me?” Both Neville and his grandmother gape at you. His grandmother recovers first “a sweet brave witch like you? How can they not my dear?”
You can see that Neville’s smile falls the father you walk into St. Mungo’s, so you take his hand and smile. He doesn’t smile but he doesn’t look so upset any longer. His gran leaves you two alone as you walk into the long room
“Mum? Dad? This is the girl I was telling you about,” And your heart just breaks for the one holding your hand. “Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Longbottom,” You smile and introduce yourself. “You have a wonderful son, and should be very proud,” and you realize just how brave Neville is for the first time in knowing him and Neville realizes that he never wants anyone but you by his side because you make him feel the bravest
You do visit him this summer. He lives in a downtown flat in the outskirts of London with his Gran. He’s got a garden in the small space out back and it’s filled with the most beautiful plants the moonlace you sent him is in a window box outside his bedroom
he’s got a jar of old candy wrappers sitting on his dresser and you give him a questioning look. “They’re from my mum,” He admits “I... I don’t want to toss them but I don’t know what to do with them,” “May I?” You ask and he nods, looking slightly worried.
You take one of the wrappers and easily fold it into a tiny origami butterfly. “My dad showed me how... we used to fold our gum wrappers...” soon each wrapper is folded into a little butterfly and placed into the jar again.
Fifth year seems like a total fiasco between Umbridge and the ministry but you and Neville both love DA
You know he loves it because he feels like he’s finally making his parents proud. “You do that just by being their son, I don’t care what your gran says,” You whisper one night, looking at the old photo of the Order of the Phoenix
You and Neville both get very good at defense spells and though you can’t sneak away to the Astronomy Tower that year, you do go to the RoR on quiet nights by yourselves and it’s just a huge greenhouse with a glass roof and walls where you can sit and watch the stars and maybe have midnight picnics
okay i’m calling bullshit on JKR again neville has a corporeal patronus
It’s a lion, let’s be honest
When he does cast the patronus you let out a yell of victory and so does he. Then you’re hugging and the charm falls but he doesn’t care. Your patronus might be a five foot butterfly but its fine and terrifying
You steal his sweaters all the time even though you think they’re god-awful but they’re always warm and smell like him and soft and you like people including your reflection knowing that you’re his and he wants you and chose you
Neville only gets caught by the Inquisitorial Squad because Draco  throws you to the ground and Neville breaks his nose a-la-muggle then helps you up
At the Ministry you and Neville are a force to be reckoned with against Death Eaters and he saves you from Bellatrix because damn if he’s letting anyone else he loves get hurt by her
But you’re one step ahead and jump in front of Neville just as Bellatrix sends the Cruatius curse at him and furious, Neville sends one right back at Bellatrix before lifting you into his arms
You’re not awake but you’re breathing. “Stupid brave girl,” He cries, holding you, carrying you away from the fight as the rest of the Order shows up
He stays beside your hospital cot and refuses to be looked after himself by Pomfrey until you open your eyes. “Nev?” You rasp. “Stars! What were you thinking!? Running in front of me like that!?” He yells, pulling you into his arms. “Couldn’t let her hurt you too,” your voice is shaky and broken and he finds himself crying because he loves you. “I love you too Nev,” you whisper out
Then proceed to yell at him about refusing treatment and he laughs, wiping away your tears and pressing his lips to yours. It’s caked in dirt and blood, but it’s the best kiss and he refuses to let you out of his sight
That summer you go over every Sunday for family dinner and to just hang out with Neville. His gran hovers the first few weeks, but boy is she smitten with you because you remind her so much of Neville’s mother
He comes to your muggle and magic home and is amazed at the farm house that you live in in the middle of nowhere and finally understands where your love of stars comes from because out in the country he could see everything
He loves your cat Moxy and asks why you don’t bring her to school and you explain that she’s not a familiar, she’s just a normal house cat. And he swears that you and the cat have a language of your own and sees you two have full on conversations and arguments and just smiles because he loves you
Your parents love him so much and adopt him into the family on the spot. You show him some muggle flowers and plants that are your favorite (sunflowers, marigolds, loquat trees hydrangeas). You two spend forever binging Disney movies because he’s never seen any and you’re not having that and despite the war looming overhead, it’s a moment of peace
Sixth year when Neville gets the invitation for Slughorn’s lunch on the train you practically have to shove him out the door because “We always ride together, I can’t just leave you, I’m not going.” “Neville I swear to the gods go!”
He comes back, slightly sulking and you ask. “Just wanted to know my for who my parents are,” You dislike Slughorn on the spot. “Or maybe he wants to know you because you’re a hero,” You brush his hair from his eyes. It’s not hard to get the smile back into his eyes and on his lips
Sixth year is relatively normal for you and Neville, despite all of the fear and rumors spreading about He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. You are aware that the Golden Trio and the “chosen one” are up to something but for the moment you just want to go to Hogwarts, kiss your boyfriend, and pass your N.E.W.T.s
And maybe you worry about Draco Malfoy a bit because you know he’s a prat but he just looks like death this year. Neville can’t deny that you’re right and aids your efforts to try and reach out to the Slytherin
Then Dumbledore dies and everything changes. Part of you regrets not doing something more, but part of you is grateful that you enjoyed the moments before, while you still could.
Again you just want to punch Bellatrix in the face because at this point she’s frankly just annoying
You and Neville go to the funeral and you’re both stoic but gripping the other’s hand tightly.
“It’s up to us now,” Neville whispers one night while visiting his parents, a common thing for you two recently. “Harry isn’t coming back next year.” You’re furious with Harry for skipping out on Hogwarts, but you know Neville is right, the school needs hope still
You two reopen DA and you start a support group on campus under Snape’s nose for the younger kids who need to feel safe and protected. The first years just break your heart because they’re so young and it’s just not fair that they have to go through their first year of Hogwarts like this
The Room of Requirement becomes a safe haven for anyone and everyone but especially you and Neville who really can’t seem to catch a break. You’re rarely apart when you can help it and have been sleeping curled up with another since the first week
You defend first years ruthlessly from the prats in Slytherin and still try to get through to them that it didn’t matter whose side they were on, this isn’t right and maybe Draco and a few others let you go a few times scot free
You and Neville still watch the stars whenever you can manage and story nights with you become a commonality amongst younger years who really just need a hero or fairytale to believe in and Merlin it does something to Neville when he sees first years curled up in your lap hanging on to your every word or fast asleep
You two are sort of honorary parents that year and all of the professors who still believe in the cause are on your side and giving you two anything you need to give to the younger kids
Patching each other up after “detentions” you decide somewhere along the way that if you ever make it out of this alive you want to do two things: marry Neville and become a Healer because you’ve got a knack for healing spells and potions
The Battle of Hogwarts finally comes and you both are more than ready for it. After helping the first years to safety you and Neville join the fight hand in hand. You’re terrified but you can’t help but smile at him because you remember a shy dorky kid from first year and now he’s a leader and everything you knew he could be
When Harry is pronounced dead Neville looks at you, despaired and kisses you. It’s desperate and fast then he kisses your forehead and runs out of the crowd to face Voldemort alone and you don’t know if you love or hate him in that moment
Luna catches you and boy is she string because you can’t shake her grip. “Watch,” She whispers softly. “He’ll be alright. He’s got a fighter’s spirit,” You want to argue and run out after him, but she’s right, he’s bloody brilliant on his own as you watch through tears
As soon as you realize that Harry isn’t dead you throw Luna off, call Neville’s wand to your hand and you’re back to back fighting off Death Eaters while scolding him about never doing that again “Yes dear,” He laughs.
Then Nagani coils around your feet, making you fall  and scramble back, wandless. “Neville!” You scream, terrified. He looks around panicked for you and then at the ground. The Sorting Hat was inches from him, a silver handle with red rubies presented.
He draws the sword and roars, killing the snake. You’re both panting and staring at each other. He helps you up and you pull him into another kiss before there’s an explosion behind you two. “We should...” “Yeah...” you chuckle and take his hand and dash off into the madness again.
The fighting seems to stop as Harry and Voldemort face each other down. You and Neville watch side by side, clinging to each other
As soon as Voldemort is gone you scream in victory and Neville takes you in his arms and you’re kissing again and for one moment everything is okay, because you’re both alive and free and it’s going to be okay.
Then you quickly go around mending and healing those who need it, not stopping until Neville pulls you away from the infirmary and sets you down on a cot.
“They need me,” You mumble into his shoulder as he takes a look at your wounds. “And they might appreciate it if you live long enough to help them,” There’s a soft smile on his lips as he patches you up and presses a soft kiss to each of your wounds.
There are too many funerals and too many tears and too many nightmares, but he’s always there beside you. And you’re beside him. You both expect to wake up in the room of requirement with Voldemort still alive, but it never happens.
You and Neville go and visit his parents again and together you tell them both what happens, together, because even if they’ll never understand the words spoken, it’s a reassurance to you and Neville that it happened and everything is over and that you’re alright
Neville still stammers through his proposal to you and you’re laughing and crying and saying yes because Merlin you love him to the moon and back
You’re visiting his parents alone the day before the wedding and for a shining moment, his mother takes your hand and you see a light in them as she whispers “thank you,” then the light is gone and she’s back to her spaced out look
The wedding isn’t much, just school friends and professors and some family. Neville is in a sweater and you’re barefoot in your backyard with a bouquet of moonlace getting married under the stars
You speak on behalf of Draco at his trial and convince Harry and just about all of your friends as well, because Draco was a victim like the rest of you were
You decide that you want to open a place for all the kids at Hogwarts who need a summer/holiday home because it’s not safe at their homes or they don’t want to go home. Neville kisses you when you suggest it and starts looking into places to make your dream happen
Harry offers Grimmauld Place and you cry and hug him because it’s perfect and soon all of the alumni from your year are working on fixing up a the place because they agree, there needs to be a safe haven for these kids
When he starts teaching at Hogwarts, you become a part of the staff as a therapist/Healer/on-hand mother figure to anyone and everyone. You don’t want kids like Draco or Neville or Harry to slip through the cracks, and though you can’t take down the house system, you can help kids while they grow up
You and Neville go out and see every new Disney movie in theaters, even before you have kids (and eventually you make your way to America to go to Disney World. It becomes an annual tradition)
You and Neville can’t have biological kids because of your injuries during the war so you adopt: first a little boy Perseus Frank Longbottom, then a little girl a few years later, Persephone Alice Longbottom.
Every year on the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, you and Neville stop classes that day and tell all of the students the story, hand in hand. Everyone gathers in the Great Hall as the Storyteller and her Hero paint a tale of love and loss and hope.

i’m gonna need somebody to make a complete rewrite of the harry potter books in which everything is the same except harry gets sorted into slytherin because the thought of chamber of secrets with this What If is making my brain do cartwheels. harry was already concerned about being slytherin’s heir as a gryffindor IMAGINE if he was a slytherin… also hermione would obviously be sorted into gryffindor since G comes before P but you know what doesn’t come before P? W. would ron still be sorted into gryffindor? the new boy he just met who offered him candy and stood up for him when they don’t even know each other that well, who coincidentally also happens to be the Boy-Who-Lived, just got sorted into a house who is renowned for having produced dark wizards Especially the dark wizard who had tried to kill harry… im not saying anything mmmm

Dramione fics recs
For @miabrown007
The Right Thing To Do By : LovesBitca8 - E, 36 chapters - Hermione felt the pounding in her ears again. She would see him for the first time since the Great Hall, gaunt and stricken at the Slytherin table with his mother clutching his arm. She hadn't meant to look for him. Not in the corridors, not beneath the white sheets of the fallen, not on the way to the Chamber of Secrets with Ron, but she was a stupid girl.
Wait and Hope by mightbewriting - M, 12 chapters -
“Harry,” Hermione began, voice very controlled, but she could feel the blade of panic slicing at her vocal cords. “Why was Draco Malfoy just screaming bloody murder about his,” and the word almost strangled her as she said it, “wife?”
Harry's green eyes blew wide. Healer Lucas pinched the bridge of her nose, clearly displeased with the recent series of events.
“He was referring to you, my dear,” she said. “That was the other question you got wrong. Your name is Hermione Jean Granger-Malfoy.”
Hermione had to be sedated again.
[In which Hermione loses the last six year's worth of her memories, including the entirety of her relationship and marriage to Draco.]
Manacled by senlinyu - E, 77 chapters - Harry Potter is dead. In the aftermath of the war, in order to strengthen the might of the magical world, Voldemort enacts a repopulation effort. Hermione Granger has an Order secret, lost but hidden in her mind, so she is sent as an enslaved surrogate to the High Reeve until her mind can be cracked.
Until The Ink Runs Dry by AccioMjolnir - T, 10 chapters -
Granger,
Your mistake is assuming I have better angels at all.
-D.M.
Isolation by bexchan - M, 49 chapters - He can't leave the room. Her room. And it's all the Order's fault. Confined to a small space with only the Mudblood for company, something's going to give. Maybe his sanity. Maybe not. "There," she spat. "Now your Blood's filthy too!" DM/HG. PostHBP. Now complete with the epilogue.
Amateur Cartography by worksofstone - T, one-shot - That one-night stand with Draco Malfoy was a mistake. Hermione doesn't make mistakes, or at least she isn't supposed to. She's working hard at her Ministry career, however frustrating and pointless her job may be, and she's also got to live up to everyone's expectations as Hogwarts's most famous Muggle-born and a top-tier War Hero. So, why is she still sleeping with Draco Malfoy, ex-Death Eater and infamous pureblood? And why isn't she certain that she wants to stop?
The Politician's Wife by pir8fancier - M, 14 chapters - This story is set twenty-three years after the fall of Voldemort. Our main characters are Ministry employees, middle-aged, and the majority of them not very happy.
Don't Take This Sinner by hexmionegranger - E, 25 chapters -
Hermione Granger couldn’t help but think that no matter how difficult they had all figured rebuilding their society would be, no one was expecting anything quite like this. It was another stark reminder that just when things were finally starting to level out, they would never truly have peace and stability. Her entire life in the magical world had been full of shocks and stumbles, and this one seemed like the biggest of them all.
A post-war Dramione marriage law fic... with a twist!
The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy by speechwriter - M, 33 chapters -
The night that Harry and Dumbledore return from the cave, the Death Eaters are delayed from reaching the top of the Astronomy Tower for one more minute. Draco Malfoy lowers his wand.A Deathly Hallows rewrite in which Draco accepts Dumbledore's offer to fake his death and go into hiding with the Order of the Phoenix.
The Troublesome Thing About Time by LadyKenz347 - M, 9 chapters -
Hermione was sick of adventure. She'd had her fair share, and taking a seat at the desk in the back of the DLME was all she could have dreamed of -- until it wasn't.
One day Hermione is summoned to the bowels of the Ministry where she is met by the lead Unspeakable who has a rather odd situation that needs to be dealt with.
Draco Malfoy has just arrived from twenty years in the future and insists on speaking to his wife, Hermione Granger.
The only problem is that the Draco Malfoy she knows is still the snarky, button-pushing boy upstairs--and not the man in front of her now.
The Green Girl by Colubrina - T, 21 chapters - Hermione is sorted into Slytherin; how will things play out differently when the brains of the Golden Trio has different friends? AU.
Aurelian by BittyBlueEyes - T, 43 chapters - Two years after the war, a young stranger pays a visit to the burrow. His arrival alone is baffling, but the news he brings of an upcoming war turns the world upside down. Hermione's quiet, post-war life will never be the same.
The Eagle's Nest by HeartOfAspen - M, 71 chapters - Hermione's eighth year at Hogwarts is already going to be difficult in the aftermath of the war, but is further thrown into upheaval when Headmistress McGonagall orders a re-sorting of all students to promote inter-house unity. But when the Sorting Hat sends Hermione to Ravenclaw with Draco - and without Harry or Ron - how will she cope? [Epilogue? What epilogue?] Prevalent alchemy.
Daughter of Zeus by Peanutbuttertoast - M, 70 chapters - After the victory at the Battle of Hogwarts, Hermione's vow has been fulfilled and her true heritage revealed.
Hermione’s Diary by RideBoldlyRide - T, one-shot -
She filled every page for nearly ten years, word upon word. At the end, there was nothing left to do but say goodbye. But Hermione’s daughter watches the words disappear, leaving blank pages to make friends on the other side of the parchment…
Who’s on the other side, and why do they know so much about a father she knows so little about?
If you are who I think you are, Cassie, then yes, I do know of your father, and I think I do know why your mother doesn’t want my name used around you.
The words rise to the surface only to disappear again from the page.
Why?
His response is immediate.
To keep you safe.
Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love by isthisselfcare - E, 36 chapters -
Hermione straddles the Muggle and Magical worlds as a medical researcher and Healer about to make a big discovery. Draco is an Auror assigned to protect her from forces unknown – to both of their displeasure.Features hyper-competent, fiery Hermione and lazy, yet dangerous, Draco. Slow burn.
Clean by olivieblake - M, 31 chapters - Malfoy's handsome face was contoured into a condescending smirk. "No faith in that giant brain of yours, Granger?" She looked up at him defiantly. "Maybe I don't have faith in you!" she said, raising her voice. Malfoy only looked at her. "You'll find I'm very surprising." Dramione AU, Year 6 with a slow burn and a killer twist. Book I of "This World or Any Other" series. COMPLETE.
Love In A Time Of The Zombie Apocalypse by rizzlewrites - E, 84 chapters - After Voldemort, there was this. The clock is ticking to create a cure to the unimaginable horror that currently grips the world. Hermione finds herself unwillingly allied with the most hated man in Wizarding Britain. (Alternate ending: 'La Vie En Rose', Audiobook by ETL.Echo.Audiobooks).
Measure Of A Man by inadaze22 - E, 42 chapters - To truly know someone is to differentiate between who they once were, who they are now, and who they're capable of being. Hermione realises the duality of one man as she rectifies what she knows of the past and begins to understand the pieces of who Draco Malfoy is now: a father, a son, and a man.
The Auction by LovesBitca8 - E, 41 chapters - In the wake of the Dark Lord’s triumph over Harry Potter, the defeated must learn their new place. Hermione Granger, former Golden Girl, has been captured and reduced to human chattel. Sold to the highest bidder as the top prize at an auction of Order members and sympathisers, she is thrust into the rabid, waiting hands of the Death Eaters. But despite the horrors of Voldemort’s new world, help—and hope—seem to arise from the most unlikely of places.
