So, here's the thing:
First of all - Gladiator is one of my favourite movies EVER. It's the only film I've seen more than three times at the cinema and it introduced me to the genius of Hans Zimmer so I will love it forever.
Secondly - I've seen many stupid movies in my life but what I saw today was...
I'm not even sure how to describe it. Why? How? Who gave money for this crap? Who convinced all these actors to take part in this abomination?
Ugh. Before I saw it, I guess back then when I first heard that there was a plan to do it, I had many doubts, I could not believe that they could do it again. But... I did not expect telenovela and such a huge insult to the original movie.
First I thought, well, you have to respect Paul Mescal to be brave enough and try to compete with Russell Crowe but, my lord, he was no competition at all. I mean, he wasn't horrible but he was no fit for this role, I'm sorry, that is my opinion.
The two puppets, I mean Imperial Twins could not be more wooden, my teeth were in trouble every time there was a scene with these two.
And the plot. What can I say? They slaughtered original story of Maximus so badly that at one moment I wanted to cry, it wasn't funny anymore. They completely erased his life in Spain, wife and son and made him simple Roman general, who only cared for Rome. Right.
Next there is music. I have nothing against Harry Gregson-Williams. Even liked some of his works. And it was a tough job to do, following Hans Zimmer. But apart from Zimmer's parts there was nothing interesting in the music for this film. Sad.
One more thing - the movie is brutal. I didn't know how brutal it is before the screening but still I was surprised when I saw a couple with two kids that couldn't be older than 10 going for the same movie. I'm not sure if I would want to see it as a kid.
Uff, so that's that.
There was a good thing in the movie - it was Denzel Washington's role. I liked this character (although his ending was ridiculous) and he did great job acting. And Pedro Pascal was all right, even when he did not have much to work with.
I don't know what happened to Ridley Scott but this movie is a mistake. HUGE, MASSIVE MISTAKE.
Or, maybe it was supposed to be a parody of some sort? 🤔

Welcome welcome my lovelies to where I rant about something that drives me bonkers: alternate soundtracks not being officially released on music streaming services.
I feel it's important to note that this is me trying not to infodump, even if it doesn't look like it-
Therefore, I'm putting in a cut for my own scrolling sanity and everyone else's.
I happen to be overly-obsessed with film and TV soundtracks *glances at the 63hr beast of a playlist I have* and so there I was, watching Narnia as a girl is to do on occassion, when I heard a very specific melody in one of the scenes. At the bit where Aslan's walking with Lucy and Susan to the Stone Table and Lucy holds his mane, I picked up on a tiny, miniscule, and beautiful melody I hadn't noticed before.
Now, I have an UNHEALTHY obsession with Harry Gregson-William's music in this film, it is in my ears constantly. If I had to pick a favourite I'd probably just rattle off the names of all the tracks in the album cos...it's amazing and it gives me a will to live. BUT I know those tracks off by flipping heart, and I had not heard that sound in the official soundtrack.
I checked, I checked I was not hearing things, I ensured it wasn't in some different piece. I made sure so that I wouldn't sound totally on crack right now (even if I did spend an hour trying to find a sound that's only there for five wonderful seconds). It. Was. Not. There. (In the official album: "The Stone Table")
SO, being someone with no responsibilities or work to do (I'm lying), naturally I looked into it. Thankfully for me, people on the Internet are literal angels for people like me who are too fucking stubborn to let something go, and I found the sound I was looking for. It was on an unreleased/alternate album and I believe it was stripped from a CD.
(The sound I'm referring to is at 1:27 in, volume up, p.s this person's channel also has unreleased lotr stuff and it's so so very good)
youtube
Now, I love me a CD, I grew up with CDs, and I bought the BBC Ashes to Ashes CD just for one tiny track that scratches an itch in the back of my brain, but EXPLAIN TO ME WHY this lovely and genuinely gorgeous 5-second sound wasn't in the official streaming soundtrack when it is literally IN THE FILM.
WHY. LIKE- WHY??? *exhales aggressively*
Some music angel sent from God had to upload the track from a CD just so I could scratch an itch in my brain and listen to that single noise on repeat. It was in the film, so why isn't it in the actual bloody soundtrack?
(If there's an actual reason feel free to let me know, I'm just frustrated, I know nothing of music production companies).
And, by extension, why can't we have the unreleased soundtracks put on literally anywhere other than where someone's had to strip a CD and put it on YouTube? (Even though they're angels and I love them so much for doing this). I don't care if it wasn't used in the final film, I would like to hear it please and thank you. I've heard variations of so many wonderful tracks but I can't find them anywhere other than YouTube or a CD.
I have nothing against CDs or YouTube and honestly at least the tracks are being appreciated somewhere, but I also think the unreleased versions deserve so much more credit than they get!
Also worth noting that this is why I love how the Rings of Power has individual episode albums, cos if I couldn't listen to that bit where Elrond and Galadriel are chasing each other on horseback I would not be happy.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk, yes I'm aware I sound fully mental over one tiny bit but it's just all unreleased stuff not getting the credit, especially considering how much love and work composers put into their music.

#Youtube#Harry gregson-williams#Narnia#the lion the witch and the wardrobe#Op has a serious problem. We'll blame it on the mbti type#Composers unofficial stuff is undervalued

Kingdom of Heaven OST - The King (Harry Gregson-Williams)
This has been playing on repeat while I've been brainstorming headcanons and writing blurbs from my new WIP crossover fanfic, Sicut In Cælo Et In Terra.
Though Star Trek enables me to create the kind of AU content I want, the whole fic will lean far more heavily in favor of KoH, and King Baldwin IV in particular will play a very large role in this drastically-changed timeline and universe. The king himself will be a hybridized version of his historical and KoH selves, as will most of the other characters in the story.
For those interested, here are a few of these headcanons:
His chambers are frequented by an old and battle-scarred silver Egyptian Mau street cat. Baldwin has dubbed him "Carles Li Magnes" (Charlemagne).
His warhorse is named Vielantiu, after the horse of the legendary Roland.
His sword is called Enseigne, an Oakeshott XII-type pattern-welded blade with a bone hilt, blue and white enameling, and decorative gilding. According to the Old Norman dictionary, this word can mean everything from "sign" or "prophecy" to "paragon" and "exemplar", and even "war cry", depending on context. The engraving in the fuller reads "Virtue, Faith, Will" in Latin. As for the design, see the WIP sketch below.
If I've piqued your interest, be sure to check out the WIP first chapter I posted here!

Fred Hechinger on the Parallels of Gladiator II' and the Politics of Today
Fred Hechinger on the Parallels of Gladiator II' and the Politics of Today @GladiatorMovie #GladiatorII
Joaquin Phoenix’s first Academy Award nomination was for the role of Emperor Commodus in the first Gladiator film. The role went down in history as one of the best movie villains of that decade. So to walk in the footsteps of the legacy of such a performance and a character would have been a challenge for any actor. However, thankfully Gladiator II was blessed with, not one, but two evil emperors…

Harry Gregson-Williams is a famous composer who you might know for working on the Metal Gear Solid series. However, the reason Kojima wanted to hire someone like Gregson-Williams is that he was a movie composer!
And Kojima of course loves movies and the prestige of making his games just a little more movie-like.
One of my favorite scores Gregson-Williams has done is for the Aardman movie Chicken Run, which is basically a Prisoner of War movie ala The Great Escape... but with Chickens!
Chicken Run got a movie tie-in PS1 game, as many children's movies of the era did, and being that the general vibe of the story is "POW Movie... With Chickens!", guess what then-popular military video game they decided to base their gameplay on?
youtube
Sadly, while Harry Gregson-Williams worked on both Chicken Run and MGS (from Sons of Liberty onwards), he had nothing at all to do with Metal Gear Chicken.

Shrek e vissero felici e contenti

Gladiator II (15): aka Strength And Honour - The Next Generation.
One Mann's Movies Film Review of "Gladiator II". A rip-roaring sequel from Ridley Scott that delivers thanks to a stunning Denzel Washington. 4/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Gladiator II” (2024). As I was up in London for a (very good) Mark Kermode in 3D show at the BFI, I took the opportunity to watch “Gladiator II” on the biggest screen in the UK… the BFI IMAX. Mental note… Row G is still 7 rows from the front, but a bit further back would have been better! Bob the Movie Man Rating: “Gladiator II” Plot Summary: Lucius (Paul…

NOC Review: 'Gladiator II' Honors Its Predecessor with Strength and Blood
NOC Review: 'Gladiator II' Honors Its Predecessor with Strength and Blood @GladiatorMovie #GladiatorII @ParamountPics
There are very few films in cinematic history — especially from the ‘00s — that many would consider perfect. But 24 years ago, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator became a monumental box office success, an Oscar Winner for Best Picture, and is now considered to be one of the best films of its decade. So I was insanely skeptical about Gladiator II. Continue reading NOC Review: ‘Gladiator II’ Honors Its…
