Harriet Powers's pictorial quilt square of the Leonid meteor shower depicts human and nonhuman life among the falling stars.

In Georgia, the expert quilter Harriet Powers was not yet born when the meteor burst, but she would later hear of the event and represent it through cloth on a quilt. "The falling of the stars on November 13, 1833," Harriet Powers's description of this quilt square begins. "The people were frighten and thought that the end of time had come God's hand staid the stars. The varmints rushed out of their beds..."

...The sky had seemed to be falling, but God had caught it, rescuing his creation before it was too late.

Sewing Stories: Harriet Power's Journey From Slave to Artist By Barbara Herkert

Harriet Powers learned to sew and quilt as a young slave girl on a Georgia plantation. She lived through the Civil War and Reconstruction, and eventually owned a cotton farm with her family, all the while relying on her skills with the needle to clothe and feed her children.

Later she began making pictorial quilts, using each square to illustrate Bible stories and local legends. She exhibited her quilts at local cotton fairs, and though she never travelled outside of Georgia, her quilts are now priceless examples of African-American folk art.

First Row:

(Panel 1) Job praying for his enemies. Job crosses. Job’s coffin. (2) The dark day of May 19, 1780. The seven stars were seen 12 N. in the day. The cattle all went to bed, chickens to roost and the trumpet was blown. The sun went off to a small spot and then to darkness. (3) The serpent lifted up by Moses and women bringing their children to look upon it to be healed. (4) Adam and Eve in the garden. Eve tempted by the serpent. Adam’s rib by which Eve was made. The sun and the moon. God’s all-seeing eye and God’s merciful hand. (5) John baptizing Christ and the spirit of God descending and resting upon his shoulder like a dove.

Second Row:

(1) Jonah cast over board of the ship and swallowed by a whale. Turtles. (2) God created two of every kind, male and female. (3) The falling of the stars on Nov. 13, 1833. The people were frightened and thought that the end had come. God’s hand staid the stars. The varmints rushed out of their beds. (4) Two of every kind of animal continued… camels, elephants, “gheraffs,” lions, etc. (5) The angels of wrath and the seven vials. The blood of fornications. Seven-headed beast and 10 horns which arose off the water.

Third Row:

(1) Cold Thursday, 10 of February, 1895. A woman frozen while at prayer. A woman frozen at a gateway. A man with a sack of meal frozen. Icicles formed from the breath of a mule. All blue birds killed. A man frozen at his jug of liquor. (2) The red light night of 1846. A man tolling the bell to notify the people of the wonder. Women, children and fowls frightened by God’s merciful hand caused no harm to them. (3) Rich people who were taught nothing of God. Bob Johnson and Kate Bell of Virginia. They told their parents to stop the clock at one and tomorrow it would strike one, and it did. This was the signal that they had entered everlasting punishment. The independent hog which ran 500 miles from Georgia to Virginia, her name was Betts. (4) The creation of animals continues. (5) The crucifixion of Christ between the two thieves. The sun went into darkness. Mary and Martha weeping at his feet. The blood and water run from his right side.

i also think it’s neat!! and very silly to me

in a semi ironic way (workout coach and literal Sweet) though they Are pretty similar, (from what you can guise from Candice)

anyhow!

- i dooo think they would work together more often then not (usually starting with harriet’s (semi unprompted) advice about candices events) 

- harriet also finds herself craving waldo’s burgers ect ect and is so mad about it (ofc she doesn’t eat them ever but the thought is was counts)

- they are each others number one fans, the optimism is blinding

- i think a lot of their relationship would be playful competition (candice still has yet to beat harriet’s record)

- i can’t decide if either candice teaches harriet the flash step thing (the way she moves across the room) or she just never teachers unless she join the secret ninja . thing i forgot what it was called. both are pretty funny to me

So like, imagine this. It's the first big family reunion after COVID restrictions let up, your family took a few years to all get vaccinated, ect. Your kid is 6, so they weren't old enough to take to the last one, this is the first time they're meeting some of these more distant relatives. So you introduce them to Uncle Mike, and you say "This is Uncle Mike. He thinks you're so small and delicious, and that it'd be so easy to pick you up and throw you at the nearest wall and break all your bones." If that 6 year old then power kicks uncle Mike in the nuts and runs away screaming, whose fault is that?

So this post is about Doctor Who. The patron unknowable Eldritch entity of your country has just spent an entire afternoon telling you that the universe is full of things that are stronger and bigger than you, and a lot of them will happily blenderize your planet for a bit of rocket fuel, or eat all of you for a big Sunday brunch. And he's letting that ship full of slavers happily fly away to tell the entire galaxy about your tiny planet's existence. You are an animal, your empathy and reason only extends to the boundaries of what you can understand, and the Doctor has just told you that the vast majority of the galaxy sees you as prey. Me, personally? I'm with Harriet, I wouldn't stand a chance in that situation, I'd 100% take that shot.

All I'm saying is that if the Doctor wanted to foster empathy, they probably shouldn't have started with enthusiastically explaining how cleverly the aliens were going to coerce them into slavery, especially not to a woman who grew up in Britain as it rebuilt itself from the blitz in a post-nazi Europe
