Bowl with a Pine Branch
This bowl was made by Japanese potter Miyagawa Hanzan c. 1925 in the style of Nin’ami Dōhachi (1783 - 1855). It is decorated with a beautiful pine branch that wraps around the inside and outside of the object 🌲 Miyagawa Hanzan, who also made the wonderful shrimp vase we shared earlier this week, was the adopted son of Miyagawa Kōzan, artist to the Japanese Imperial household and was one of the most pre-eminent potters of the Meiji period. He came from a long line of potters in Kyoto, and began studying fine art at a very young age. When Kōzan died in 1916, Hanzan took the name Kōzan II, and began to work with stoneware as well as porcelain. Sadly, the factory they ran together in Yokohama was destroyed in World War II. I like to headcanon Mito and Hashirama’s (oldest or only) son was named Hanzan ( 斑山 ) because Hashirama could never let Madara go and as the village started to enshrine him as god of shinobi and started to erase Madara from history (something that started during Hashirama’s reign but was fully completed under Tobirama’s) Hashirama was desperate to have proof that Madara existed (hence the statues and his son’s name, 斑 is the kanji for ‘spot’ the kanji that would be used if Madara’s name was spelled with kanji.)

Poling a Boat in the Moonlit Water, Matsukawa Hanzan, 1866, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Japanese and Korean Art
Two men pole a boat through the water. The reflection of the full moon is fractured by the boat's wake. The water's blue color suggests the clear sky of a moonlit night. The image may depict Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake. If so, the pagoda on the distant mountain range is Ishiyamadera Temple, located on the southern end of the lake, and long renowned as a good spot from which to view the full, harvest moon. As the date written on the print indicates, the print was made in autumn of 1866. An unidentified poetry association probably commissioned it to commemorate their gathering on the night of the harvest moon in late September. Interestingly, all twenty-three poems directly mention the moon, but Hanzan playfully avoided depicting the moon itself. Size: 4 7/8 x 15 in. Are there any reasons for Hashirama to chose not to continue with the "-ma" naming convention for Hanzan?
My own kindergarten level understanding of Japanese 😂
That's more or less the "real" reason, I'm not sure how to format a name from scratch and include 斑 and "ma" at the end and make it an actual proper name. In universe, it could be explained that Hashirama purposefully moved away from the tradition and made a statement by naming his children something different. (The Senju are noticeably absent in the village and neither Tsunade or Nawaki are ever referred to as "Senju" in canon, so I like to imagine Hashirama did something rather drastic in the lineage line.) Presumably the naming tradition is either broken in his Tsunade's parents' generation or her own considering she and Nawaki don't fall under the naming convention.
