Punched, insulted and excoriated in song … our critics on the artists who hit back In a shocking attack, the ballet director Marco Goecke smeared dog excrement in the face of Wiebke Hüster in retaliation for her review. Yet it isn’t the first time an artist has assaulted a critic. Our writers share their worst momentsI was biffed on the head by David Storey in 1976 after describing his play Mother’s Day as “a stinker”. But that rankled less than sustained verbal assaults by Jonathan Miller late in his career. He once sent me a New Year’s Day card urging me to cease my “foul pork scratchings” and told an interviewer that ideally directors should be reviewed by their peers rather than “nonentities like Michael Billington”. Better a Storey thump than a Miller moan. Michael Billington Continue reading... https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2023/feb/14/critics-on-the-artists-who-hit-back

After Beth ran off after Hannah, the group went back into the lodge.
Matt and Ashley reluctantly went to sleep. Matt stayed up for a bit before succumbing to tiredness. Ashley laid awake until the morning in case she heard them come back.
Emily and Jess joked about Hannah being dramatic before Em drunkingly dragged Jess to her and Mike’s room where they crashed on the bed.
Sam and Mike stayed up in the living room. Mike took naps on the couch since his bed was occupied. Sam stayed up the whole night looking out the window every few minutes for the twins.
At one point Sam and Mike stepped out side and called for them but didn’t go out too far before tuning back. Sam broke the news to Josh in the morning…

Everybody is all smiles for the group picture, from heroes to villains and everything in-between. Even characters who were otherwise sticks in the mud like Hank genuinely smile for the picture. Villains such as Muntz, de la Cruz, Lotso, Thunderclap and his gang, Syndrome, Evelyn, Randall, Waternoose, Hopper, Skinner, and Ercole, as much of evil psychopaths they were, are seen tenderly and respectfully singing along. Even Sid, who was a massive bully to Hannah, is seen giving her a kind brotherly embrace. Also, most movies’ main cast seem to be cramped together. Even the villains stand near their respective heroes, everyone in a healthy relationship with their families and loved ones are tenderly holding each other close, and many of the larger characters offer their bodies for the smaller ones.
Forky, Heimlich, Dory, Jack-Jack, Mater, WALL-E, and one of the triplets wave at the camera.
Dim and Wee Dingwall give the camera dopey smiles.
The egg-shaped bluebirds and the gawky bird stand perched above the entrance. The bluebirds are happy to have the gawky bird with them, a far cry from how they treated him in their short.
Sulley carries Boo tenderly in his arms. Helen does the same to Jack-Jack, as do Presto with Alec, Carl and Russell with Kevin’s babies, Elinor and Fergus with their triplet sons, Embarrassment with Envy, Massimo with Machiavelli, and Izzy with Sox.
Terri attempts to dance before his other half stops him.
Hank carries Marlin, Dory, and Nemo in a coffee pot.
Voyd and Abby giddily bounce in place, clearly the most excited for the photo.
Linguini carries Remy while Colette holds Django and Emile.
WALL-E and EVE hold the umbrellas from The Blue Umbrella.
HAN-S still can’t stay still, shaking aggressively as the photo is taken.
Kevin and her babies take the time to mimic Carl once again.
Maudie and the Clan Dingwall hunk share a loving look.
Young Macintosh flexes his pecs while giving the camera a cocky smile, the same type of smile given by characters like Terry, Darby, and Clod.
The Witch has her Crow standing perched on her shoulder.
Being stationary volcanoes, Uku and Lele are unable to leave their photo. Thankfully, they have Thunderclap to hold it so they can be in the group picture.
Nostalgia sticks her head out from behind Embarrassment, clearly hiding from the other emotions.
Riley, Grace, and Bree all carry Knick together while Riley’s parents carry the Miami and Florida knick knacks, Val and the Fire Hawks carry the Egypt, Jamaica, Palm Springs, Israel, and Death Valley knick knacks, and Coach Roberts carries Sunny Atlantis in her fish bowl.
Cindy, Son’s fiancée, winks at the camera as the photo is taken.
Machiavelli gives the camera his standard bored look.
Mei has her red hair, panda ears, and panda tail, continuing to embrace her panda.
Aaron Z gives the camera a thumbs up while Tae Young makes a heart with his hands.
Izzy gives Sox a neck scratch.
Alisha and Kiko’s inclusion also counts due to their backlash following the movie’s release.

Trump’s Volunteers: ‘Beautiful Ladies’ From a Secretive Evangelical Church In Spindale, NC
Robert Draper and Michael Gold at NYT:
Former President Donald J. Trump has gruesome rhetorical staples he likes to deploy at his political rallies, including homicidal sharks, bird-killing windmills and Hannibal Lecter. Amid the litany, one less morbid aside tends to escape notice. “Those beautiful ladies from North Carolina are here again without their husbands,” Mr. Trump observed at a rally in Mosinee, Wis., on Sept. 9, veering off from a rant about the 2020 election. He gestured toward the rafters and a row of a dozen impeccably coifed women in brightly colored pantsuits, as if they had wandered in from an Easter gala. The women waved and blew kisses at the former president, who speculated that the women had attended “249 or something” rallies. “That means they have money,” he said approvingly. Mr. Trump has called out the self-described “North Carolina Girls” at rallies this year in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, Arizona and South Carolina, in addition to events in their native state. But the women are unusual in ways beyond their ubiquity.
All are members of an evangelical charismatic Christian church in the tiny town of Spindale (population 4,238) in western North Carolina. The church, Word of Faith Fellowship, has for decades drawn controversy over its cultish insularity and its treatment of children and adults who have been judged by church leaders to be sinners. As church leaders have acknowledged in legal proceedings, Word of Faith relies on a practice known as “strong” or “blasting” prayer. Former church members have described the entire congregation surrounding and screaming at a single member for as long as an hour in an effort to expunge the evil from the person. Church officials say this characterization is overstated. Beginning with a report by the TV news journal “Inside Edition” in 1995 and culminating in an investigative series by two Associated Press reporters that would become a book in 2020, numerous former church members have come forward and described being physically assaulted during such prayers.
In an interview, Matthew Fenner, a former congregant who told the A.P. reporters that he was 19 when he was blasted and beaten by five church members in 2013 for being gay, said that Word of Faith rationalized its brutal treatment of him and others. “To them, I wasn’t being abused,” Mr. Fenner said. “I was being saved and delivered.”
Word of Faith has consistently disputed these claims. As one of the members who frequently volunteers at Trump rallies, Hannah Davies, said in a testimonial posted on the church’s website: “I want everyone to know this prayer is not abusive, no one is hit, no one is punched, no one is screamed at. This prayer is full of love and freedom.” None of the church’s history comes up at Mr. Trump’s rallies, and the former president has never once mentioned the church the North Carolina women belong to. The women serve as a trusted volunteer arm of the campaign’s advance team. They arrive well before the beginning of a Trump event, set up chairs in the V.I.P. section, run the media sign-in table and disassemble the V.I.P. section after the rally is over. Contrary to Mr. Trump’s assertion that the women attend the rallies without their spouses, in recent months their husbands have been seen distributing floor passes and policing the V.I.P. areas, all of them in blue long-sleeved shirts with “Team Trump” on the back and their first initial and last name stenciled on their shirt pockets.
[...] In the statement, Mr. Farmer said that his wife, Andrea Farmer, is among the volunteers. Others represent the upper echelon of the church’s hierarchy, beginning with the co-founders of the church, Jane and Sam Whaley. Robin Webster, their daughter and a longtime teacher in the church’s K-through-12 private school, is also a volunteer, as is the church’s associate minister, Kim Waites. Word of Faith is in Rutherford County, where the Republican Party chairman, Bryson Smith, a church member, encouraged others to travel to Washington on Jan. 6, 2021, writing on social media: “Calling all patriots! Our country needs you! The time is now!” [...]
Republicans say the church constitutes a formidable voting bloc in the 10th Congressional District, which includes all of Rutherford County. During the 2020 Republican primary, the incumbent congressman, Representative Patrick McHenry, carried every precinct in the district except for the church’s home in Spindale — a likely consequence, Republicans said, of Mr. McHenry’s support for church closings during the first months of the Covid pandemic, which Word of Faith initially resisted.
A group of women volunteers, usually not occupied alongside their husbands, travel to every Donald Trump rally.
They come from the cultic Word Of Faith Fellowship in Spindale, North Carolina.

hi hannah do i even have to say what i’m gonna ask for the new ask game it’s starts with gray and ends with ghost (also take your time with the other ones i am Waiting™️ behind your Window™️👁️)
"Pretty pleeeaaase? I'll do whatever you want!"
Valerie all but slammed her locker shut. "Nathan. You've been asking me the same question for the past three years. What gives you any idea that my answer is going to change now?"
She hated to embarrass him, especially in front of so many people giggling at his latest failed attempt, but she had long since lost what little patience she might've had for these shenanigans. Frankly, she had half a mind to report him to Lancer for harassment, at this point.
She closed her eyes and pressed her back up against the locker. "Look," she said, trying desperately to reign in her temper, "I'm... flattered, alright? But no means no. End of story."
"Why not?" The bouquet of flowers hung limply at his side. "Everyone knows you still don't have a date!"
In typical high school fashion, a chorus of "ooh"s rose up from the crowd. Valerie's face burned. Whether it was from embarrassment or anger, she didn't know. Probably both.
She straightened up and took a step towards Nathan, who immediately cowered away. "I swear, Davies," she growled, "if you don't back off, I'll -"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" A body pushed itself in between her and Nathan, holding placating hands up to her.
She blinked in surprise. "Danny?"
Whispers erupted from the onlookers. Danny glanced at them nervously, but didn't change his stance. "J-just... let's take a second, okay?"
She couldn't deny that much of her anger evaporated the moment her eyes landed on Danny, but before she could say anything, he'd turned to Nathan.
"I think there, uh, might be some misunderstanding about the best way to ask a girl out," he said with a shy grin.
"What would you know about that, Fenton?" someone hollered from within the crowd. A bout of giggling circled the hallway.
Valerie's fire reignited. She turned to the direction of the voice (who had sounded suspiciously like Brady Ibarra) and made to give them a piece of her mind, but a cool hand caught hers.
She nearly snapped at Danny too, for stopping her, but the grin on his face melted her heart (and didn't it always?). Not enough to keep her from glaring at him, but it just made his grin widen that much more.
"It's easy," he said, and she couldn't tell if he was talking to her, Nathan, or the hecklers.
"Valerie..." He shifted his hand so that his fingers tucked under hers, and her heart skipped a beat. "Do you wanna go to senior prom with me?"
A couple of freshmen at the front of the group squealed, and for a moment, Valerie was too stunned to react. Three years after she'd called things off, and he suddenly comes out of nowhere asking her to prom?
But she couldn't find it within herself to be angry. They had managed to stay close despite the breakup, and there had been plenty of times over the years that she'd regretted ever making that decision.
And so she grinned right back at Danny. "See?" she said, looking past his shoulder at Nathan, who stood there with his mouth wide open. "That's more like it."
Then, to Danny, she looked him right in the eye and squeezed his hand under hers. "You're on, Fenton."
They were both smiling like idiots and standing there with red hot blushes, but she couldn't really find it within herself to care, not even when Nathan sprinted away, choking back cries of despair.
With no more drama to be privy to, the crowd quickly dispersed, though Valerie was certain she heard more than one comment about some sort of bet. No doubt Tucker was behind it. She'd be more than happy to straighten him out later.
With his free hand, Danny fidgeted with his hair. "Sorry about that," he said sheepishly. "I just heard Nathan giving you a hard time again, and everyone was watching, and I know he wouldn't leave you alone..."
"It's okay," she laughed. "I had it handled, you know. I'm not some damsel in distress."
His eyes widened to comical margins, and before she could blink, he had yanked his hand back from hers in embarrassment. "Sorry! Sorry, I - er, I never thought, you know - wasn't trying toooo you know what, I'm just gonna, uh, go now."
He turned to leave, and now it was Valerie's turn to catch his hand. "And just where do you think you're going? We've got a date to plan."
"Huh?" The poor boy looked genuinely confused for a moment before his eyes widened even more, if that was even possible. "Oh! N-no, I didn't - I wasn't really trying t-to ask, I mean, I wouldn't - not -"
Valerie's face fell a bit. "So, you don't want to go to prom with me?"
"No! I - I mean yes! I mean - ughhhh, I didn't mean for that to be how I asked you, I had something else so much better planned and -" He shut his mouth tight and his whole face turned cherry red as his own words hit him.
She couldn't help it. She laughed out loud. "You really are something, Danny."
He peeked up at her from behind his bangs. "Something good I hope?" he asked timidly.
She responded by intertwining her fingers with his and stepping closer. "Obviously." Her smile was teasing, but it still elicited a smile of his own.
He sagged with relief. "I still can't believe I screwed that up, I had this whole plan and everything," he said through breathless, disbelieving laughs.
"Don't worry, you can make it up to me. I still want to see this big plan of yours, and I want to see if you can pull it off without tripping over your own pants."
That sent him into another round of sputtering, and she started giggling again as she led him down the hallway.

hii 29, 32 and 43 :)
hiiiii <3
29. How many books do you have on your 'to-be-read' list?
199 lmao...i have a slightly smaller to-read list for this year that focuses on just books i own physical copies of but haven't read yet. that one is 35 books rn...
32. Name your favorite author(s).
hmmm ok gonna try to make this list like. authors who i've read multiple works from & enjoyed as opposed to just really liking one novel or series so. hannah moskowitz for sure. also victor hugo and mervyn peake...kurt vonnegut...neil gaiman...have also read & enjoyed multiple works by han kang, ursula k. leguin, octavia butler, and gabriel garcia marquez but i feel less familiar w them so...not sure if i'd confidently call them favorites...have also read a lot from v.e. schwab but not sure if she'd quite make the favorites list either bc there's wider variance in how much i like her works...
for nonfiction donna j. haraway, judith butler, leslie feinberg, bell hooks, audre lorde, angela y. davis, andrea long chu, gloria anzaldua, and lee edelman
for poetry louise gluck, e.e. cummings, natalie diaz, franny choi, and richard siken
43. Title of a book you own that's in the worst physical condition you have. Explain what happened to it. Post a picture if you want.
not by my bookshelves rn so can't take a pic but pretty sure it's animorphs book #6 the capture which i found at a used bookstore & half the cover is like...ripped + falling apart. i buy animorphs books pretty much anytime i find them in a used bookstore tho regardless of condition so <3
book ask game
#ask#book recs#used to love neil gaiman but honestly i find his tumblr blog annoying lmao so. now it kinda hurts to put him on the faves list...#gotta give credit where credit is due tho & i've read sooo many of his books...

In a world where even heroes can fall, Hermione Granger realizes she's fallen from grace. After spending the last three years in Azkaban, she emerges into a society that no longer sees her as a war hero, but as a disgraced outcast. Hermione's once impeccable reputation is in tatters, a stark contrast to her past where she was hailed as a symbol of hope and resilience. Worst of all? Draco Malfoy is the only one who understands, since their partnership during the war is what got her sent to Azkaban. Tasked to work together on a Muggle Integration Program or return to Azkaban, Hermione and Draco must navigate their lives back in the public when their reputations have never been worse. The adventures of two amiably aimless metal-head friends, Wayne and Garth. From Wayne’s basement, the pair broadcast a talk-show called “Wayne’s World” on local public access television. The show comes to the attention of a sleazy network executive who wants to produce a big-budget version of “Wayne’s World”—and he also wants Wayne’s girlfriend, a rock singer named Cassandra. Hey Charlotte, do you have any recs for books like these that make you feel with some sort of HEA? In Memoriam - Alice Winn, Devotion - Hannah Kent, The Song of Achilles - Madeline Miller
bud, honestly, if i knew any more books like this i would be reading them......i've been on the lookout for something to make me feel the same was as in memoriam/devotion ever since i read them
but anyway, try clear by carys davies, henry henry by allen bratton, a green equinox by elizabeth mavor, these days by lucy caldwell, the skin and its girl by sarah cypher, i will greet the sun again by khashayar j. khabushani, prophet by helen macdonald & sin blache, the foghorn echoes & the clothesline swing by danny ramadan, summer of the cicadas by chelsea catherine, the wrong end of the telescope by rabih alameddine, yes this is a very disparate series of recs but maybe you too can feel something reading them!
