Afro-Atlantic Histories charts the transatlantic slave trade and its legacies in the African diaspora. Through a series of dialogues across time, the exhibition features artworks produced in Africa, Europe, and the Americas in the last four centuries to reexamine—from a global perspective—histories and stories of enslavement, resilience, and the struggle for liberation. The exhibition is organized around six groupings: Maps and Margins, Enslavements and Emancipations, Everyday Lives, Rites and Rhythms, Portraits, and Resistances and Activism. Each section considers the critical impact of the African diaspora reflected in historic and contemporary artworks. Histórias Afro-Atlânticas originated at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP) and the Instituto Tomie Ohtake in Brazil, in 2018. Touring venues in the U.S. include the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the National Gallery of Art, and the Dallas Museum of Art. This is the only presentation on the West Coast. #hankwillisthomas #betyesaar #faithringgold #glenligon #bennyandrews #jammieholmes #romairebearden (at LACMA Los Angeles County Museum of Art) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp1PxNBrkFf2tWB-vsbrF9yd84jcirkCsEFcNM0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

⚖️#ArtIsAWeapon "Artists have the ability to depict the humanity and the dignity of people, even in the midst of something brutal and violent ... It's a tough subject. It's a challenging subject. And we wanted to use art to help people manage the weight of this history and engage in a more complete way with the lives of enslaved people." - Lawyer, Social Justice Activist, Founder of Equal Justice Initiative @eji_org Bryan Stevenson @bryanstevenson1959 .
🎥 reposted from @cbssundaymorning
"An Alabama sculpture park evokes the painful history of slavery" by Mark Witaker March 17, 2024
"In Montgomery, Alabama, wedged between a maze of train tracks and the river, a long-neglected plot of land has been transformed. It's now home to the #FreedomMonumentSculpturePark, the vision of lawyer and social activist #BryanStevenson.
The 17-acre park, set to open this month, is filled with nearly 50 sculptures by world-famous artists like Kehinde Wiley, Simone Leigh. and Kwame Akoto-Bamfo, collectively evoking the history of slavery in America...
It's the latest project for Stevenson, founder and director of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), also based in Montgomery. For more than 30 years, Stevenson and his team have provided legal services to people on death row, to date helping overturn more than 140 convictions and sentences. He said understanding the racial injustices of the present begins by reckoning with the tortured legacy of the past."

Now We See It! 💕💫
At the heart of the Boston Common, two sets of bronze arms are now forever locked in a hug. This new sculpture by artist @hankwillisthomas @hankwillisthomas in collaboration with @massdesigngroup, which was selected in a competition set forth by local nonprofit Embrace Boston, represents much more than just a commemoration of their lives; it is a monument to love. Appropriately titled "The Embrace," the 38,000-pound, 20-foot-high, and 25-foot-wide monument’s limbs belong to Coretta Scott King and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., captured during an intimate, congratulatory moment in 1964 when Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

“Everything we see hides another thing,” 2022, polished bronze sculpture by Hank Willis Thomas on view at Jack Shainman Gallery. I like the reference to Magritte’s 1928 painting “The Lovers II,” pictured second. Hank Willis Thomas is showing in both Shainman gallery spaces and is on view through October 29th. #hankwillisthomas #sculpture #bronze #bronzesculpture #jackshainmangallery #magritte #renemagritte #thelovers #arthistory #contemporaryart (at Jack Shainman Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci71WJPriDN/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hank Willis Thomas,” A Suspension of Hostilities,” 2019, plus a .gif of the cultural reference point, for those who may not know: a redneckily heroic,  indestructible muscle car named the “General Lee,” which was airborne at some point in every episode of “The Dukes of Hazzard,” a weekly “action-comedy” series on CBS from 1979 to 1985. It took the Charleston church massacre of 2015 for Warner Bros. to stop producing show-related merchandise with the Confederate flag on it, and the death of George Floyd for Amazon to finally remove the series from its video streaming services earlier this year. Mr. Thomas’ work presents a fitting, abruptly destructive end to the seemingly eternal ascension of the General Lee, and to the cultural associations attached thereto.

Hank Willis Thomas is a Brooklyn-based conceptual artist who focuses on themes of identity, the media, and popular culture. Thomas’s site-specific neon sculpture Love Rules, here in the main lobby, welcomes visitors to the Museum. The artist explains the work’s personal meaning: "I grew up in a family where love overruled. My cousin, Songha Willis, was murdered in Philadelphia in 2000. A month after he died, I found a recording of the incident, and his last words were “love over rules.”⠀⠀

With their envy-inducing holdings, @theDeanCollection, the music-industry power couple have helped lead the way for a generation of collectors of Black art. The rest of the world is finally catching up.
"A lot of people used to make fun of me collecting art," Swizz tells VF. "I won't say no names, but they're the biggest names."
At the link in bio, the duo speaks to VF about their collection's first major museum exhibition, creating a network of Black artists, and dancing the art world's political tango.

#Repost @hankwillisthomas ・・・ @hankwillisthomas, “Guernica”, 2016 🔥 “It is so amazing to finally have this work up in a museum! Thank you @bocamuseum. Among other things, this work is a comment on sports as a proxy for war. Behind the colorful representation of #picasso #guernica masterpiece, remains the horror and violence of bombing and gassing. The yellow figure on the left holds her dying baby. Others are dismembered, some are crying out in pain. Desperate animals run wild. Some people pray for help.
