Toyin Ojih Odutola "Satellite", 2022.
Designed by Yeju Choi.
The publication was produced on the occasion of Toyin Ojih Odutola's New Work Show, at SFMOMA (fourth floor), on view through January 22nd, 2023.
Best known for drawings that use distinctively layered mark-making to highlight topographies of skin and surface, Toyin Ojih Odutola is a storyteller who often presents her work in graphic narrative cycles. For this publication entitled "Satellite", Ojih Odutola is inspired by the speculative fiction of Octavia E. Butler and the poetry of Dionne Brand and explores a future haunted by human-driven environmental changes. Set in the year 2050 in geological age the artist calls Anthropocene, in Eko - the traditional Yoruba name for today's Lagos, Nigeria - "Satellite" invites us to reflect on the contours of African and other global futures.

“Everything we see hides another thing,” 2022, polished bronze sculpture by Hank Willis Thomas on view at Jack Shainman Gallery. I like the reference to Magritte’s 1928 painting “The Lovers II,” pictured second. Hank Willis Thomas is showing in both Shainman gallery spaces and is on view through October 29th. #hankwillisthomas #sculpture #bronze #bronzesculpture #jackshainmangallery #magritte #renemagritte #thelovers #arthistory #contemporaryart (at Jack Shainman Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci71WJPriDN/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“This early body of work is an exploration and interpretation of abstraction from the perspective of an artist whose practice was deeply interested in social community and representing the idea of Blackness. Created mostly in the late 1960s between his years as a student at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Yale University, the paintings are a formative study of minimalism—an investigation of light, color, line, and geometry based in the shapes of the game and inspired by Hendricks’s own love of basketball and its presence in his community.”

📰📷🎨#ArtIsAWeapon #NewExhibit #ArtistProfile 👨🏿‍🎨#PaulAnthonySmith “Junction,” now on view at @jackshainman through May 11, 2019, and recent feature in the @tmagazine:
“Jack Shainman Gallery is proud to present Junction, a new body of work by Paul Anthony Smith and his first solo exhibition with the gallery. Spanning our 20th Street and 24th Street spaces, Junction features Smith’s unique picotage on pigment prints that question, confront, and challenge the potential of a photographic image to retain past truths and constructed realities.” - www.jackshainman.com ____________________ “An Artist Who Creates Joyful, Shimmering Images of West Indian Culture…
Ahead of a new solo show, Paul Anthony Smith discusses his intricate, time-intensive process — and his favorite forms of procrastination…
For his latest body of work, the artist Paul Anthony Smith, photographed here in his Brooklyn studio, created textured photographic collages, which he calls ‘picotages,’ that evoke both pointillism and the West African coming-of-age ritual of scarification.” ✒ by @sirsargent ; 📸 of the #artist by @JacobPritchard.

Best news of the day. #Repost @jackshainman ・・・ Washington National Cathedral today announced that it will replace its former stained-glass windows featuring Confederate iconography, removed in 2017, with racial-justice themed windows created by world-renowned artist Kerry James Marshall. “This project is not just a job – I don’t need the work – or only a piece of art. It’s kind of a calling, and a real honor to be asked,” said artist Marshall. “The themes that the Cathedral committee articulated set a great challenge for me as an artist and as a Black American man. The goal is to make truly meaningful additions to an already rich and magnificent institution, to make the changes they have embraced truly worth the effort.” Dean Hollerith of Washington National Cathedral said “We’re excited to share a new and more complete story, to tell the truth about our past and to lift up who we aspire to be as a nation. We are thrilled that Kerry James Marshall has agreed to lend his immense talents and creative vision to this important project. He is one of the greatest artists of our time, and we are honored to add his artistic legacy to the iconography of this Cathedral. To complement Mr. Marshall’s work, we welcome the words of Dr. Elizabeth Alexander, one of America’s great poets and a native Washingtonian, whose incredible ability to capture the pain of yesterday and the promise of tomorrow will be felt in our house of prayer through her inscribed words.” Click the link in our bio to read the full press release! #KerryJamesMarshall #jackshainmangallery @wncathedral #publicart https://www.instagram.com/p/CUNQSrSlMUs/?utm_medium=tumblr

Now that’s what’s up! Let’s go get those Basquiats. 🙌🏾 ・・・ “I know that this work has found a home in a collection with purpose and an eye toward preserving legacy — that of Sean Combs, and that means a lot.” Jack Shainman in the New York Times today, commenting on the historic sale of Kerry James Marshall’s “Past Times” at Sotheby’s this week. We’re not surprised that Kerry continues to make history, and offer our congratulations to @diddy on his exciting acquisition! #KerryJamesMarshall @sothebys #jackshainmangallery
