Excuse the mess, but I just finished making this outfit and I'm kind of excited. I kind of want to wear it out tomorrow...

Here's another thing that I forgot to share - my first sewing project! I made the Sasha Starlight cocoon jacket for my friend's wedding back in June! Thankfully there was a video tutorial I could follow because this was a challenge for a beginner like me! I am really happy with how it turned out.
[Image description: Four photos. First three photos feature Stace standing outside in a garden. They are wearing a cocoon jacket made of green leafy print fabric, a cream colored shirt, a necklace with a rectangular pendant, black palazzo pants, and black shoes. The last photo is of a table with the paper patterns of the cocoon jacket on top of the green leafy fabric.]

Sewing Class Support
New year, new sewing classes!
As some of you may know, last year I started teaching a sewing class at a local community centre. It has been an amazing experience for me. And it's been a great way for people in the community with low- or no-income to learn.
However, over the past year, our stash of donated fabric has started to dwindle, and our thread is down to like one spool of mustard yellow basting thread from the 80s. Which is why I do this little outreach every new term.
With the support of viewers like you*, I've been able to purchase fabrics for my students who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford it. And because of that, they were able to make garments that they would be proud to show off.
I'm hoping to collect at least $100, to have 10 for each student. If I reach that goal, I'll post one of the detailed tutorials for one of the group projects we work on!
You can support the class through my ko-fi
https://ko-fi.com/tigerintheflightdeck
and I also have a wishlist of general supplies(Thread. Thread.) that you can check out as well.
https://www.amazon.ca/hz/wishlist/ls/L5ABEUG4P5PX?ref_=wl_share
As always, if you aren't able to contribute, reblogging so this gets a wider reach is a huge help.
I'm looking forward to sharing their projects with you!
*I'm sorry, I had to...

finished my first pair of pants!
ID: two photos of a pair of pants against a white background. the first photo is of the back of the pants from the knee up, the second is the front also from the knee up. they are made of brown fabric, with a side pocket with a patch of a strawberry and a button fly with brass buttons.

I finished sewing my second sealskin capelet!
As well as dark green dyed sealskin, it has a rabbit fur lining and trim, as well as an arctic fox tail as the collar. The strap is genuine leather and adorned with a mother of pearl button.
It is entirely sewn by hand.

thinking about how I had a few folks at my last market suggest to me (kindly and with good intentions) that I make and sell some versions of the hand knit cardigan I was wearing because people would "totally pay $300 for that!"
I appreciated the sentiment, but people don't understand what goes into handmade clothes! I don't use a knitting machine. Every stitch in that garment is created by hand on needles, and the sleeves were brioche. Even using inexpensive acrylic yarn for the whole project, and accounting for the HUGE sleeve stitches (saving me time making the sleeves)—the material cost was $55 and the labor was well beyond that.
Let's conservatively estimate the cardigan took me 30 hours to create. Currently, when pressed to put a dollar amount to my time, I use the living wage as a baseline and then go up from there $1/hour for every year I have been actively practicing that particular skill. In the case of knitting that would be 11 years, and the current living wage in my area is approximately $23/hour. Setting aside the fact that this is calculated based on a 40 hour work week and I don't believe that is ethical or sustainable, we'll just leave it at $34/hour. That would make labor alone $1,020.
This brings the "production cost" to $1,075.
Items are not sold at production cost because that would leave your profit margin at 0%. This is not sustainable because it costs money to run a business (think things like paying for computer repairs, buying tools, the tablecloth you use at markets, paying for a website, etc.). Realistically to cover business costs and still come out with a 7% "net" profit margin, which is just a number pulled from averages in the clothing retail business...
... I'd have to sell that cardigan for $1,350.
So yeah! Something to think about when you see the price of clothes that are handmade. :o)

I'm looking for other people who sew!
I'm looking for more sewing and slow fashion blogs to follow! Personally, I'm a big quilter (improv quilting mostly) and I am working on growing my garment sewing and drafting skills. I would love to follow more people with similar passions :-)

Definitely not the most impressive thing in the world but I thought I’d post this little rosette I made for a friend anyways! It clips and pins in the back :D

you know the thing. the really offensive thing that just sticks out over and over. and to be clear the level and severity of this deceit were insane - he didn't just cheat on me, he had a second serious relationship where he met the family, attended holidays etc. - but he had been pressuring me to make him a sweater for a really long time and i had always refused because of the sweater curse, where if you make somebody a sweater it means the relationship will end. he had laughed at me so many times and told me it wasn't real and asked me to make him a sweater, which i finally agreed to as a gift. we went to pick the yarn out last weekend and when we got home he assured me the sweater curse wasn't real again. fuck you the sweater curse is SO real

Functional mockup of a skirt with a flat-front/stretch-back waistband. I hadn't combined gathering with pleats before, but I like how that softened the shape.
